Spartak Moscow vs. Celtic
Minute Commentary
90' SPARTAK MOSCOW 2 CELTIC 3
Phew, what a dramatic finish! Georgios Samaras' late goal means Celtic have earned a 3-2 win in Moscow that few predicted. It certainly didn't look like the score-line would end up that way in the opening stages, before Gary Hooper gave his side the lead against the flow of play on 12 minutes. Celtic dug in to preserve their lead for much of the half and keep Spartak chances to a minimum, but Emmanuel Emenike popped up a few minutes prior to the interval to make it 1-1. Just the other side of half time it was Emenike who got himself on the score-sheet again, leaving Celtic with a difficult task to even get a point. However, James Forrest's introduction proved a shrewd move by Neil Lennon, as the winger was the last hoop-shirted player involved in an attack from the left that forced Dmitri Kombarov to concede an own goal. Celtic were surprisingly attack-minded after scoring the equaliser, and they bagged the winner in the 90th minute when Samaras left Sergei Pesyakov with little chance of making a save when he climbed to meet an Emillio Izaguirre cross and nod in. Four points from their opening two group games is a start that Celtic will be proud of.
90' IT'S ALL OVER
Celtic even have a flurry of activity themselves deep in the Spartak Moscow half just before the final whistle goes. It's a famous victory for the Glaswegians in the Russian capital!
90' FIVE MINUTES ADDED
We're into the second of five additional minutes as Spartak Moscow force a corner. Surely the Bhoys will hang on?
90' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Emillio Izaguirre delivered a curling cross in from the left and Georgios Samaras was never going to miss once he'd made firm contact with his head. Plenty of injury time is scheduled, so it's going to be a nervy finish in Moscow!
90' GOOOOOOOOOAL!
GEORGIOS SAMARAS heads in a certain winner in the last minute of normal time!
87' SAVED
Sergei Pesyakov never looked like being beaten by a Gary Hooper shot from a tight angle.
86' SPARTAK CHANGE
Aleksandr Kozlov comes on for Ari, who's had his moments tonight.
84' LEDLEY PEARLER
Joe Ledley comes close to making a similar impact to previous Celtic sub James Forrest, arrowing a shot towards the top left-hand corner and drawing a super save from Sergei Pesyakov. Efe Ambrose heads at the 'keeper from the resulting corner.
81' WORD ON THAT GOAL
UEFA have marked the Celtic goal down as a Dmitri Kombarov own goal. James Forrest's finish hit the 'keeper before the ball bounced in off Kombarov, but let's not take too much credit away from Forrest all the same.
80' CELTIC SUB
Neil Lennon brings on Joe Ledley in place of Charlie Mulgrew.
78' ALMOST IN
Kim Kallstrom and Dmitri Kombarov link up down the left, with Kombarov nearly finding Emmanuel Emenike with a ball into the middle.
76' SPARTAK SUB
Artem Dzyuba replaces Aiden McGeady as Spartak Moscow go in search of a winner.
73' STILL ATTACKING
James Forrest and Gary Hooper combine again to almost find Kris Commons waiting on the edge of the six-yard box, but Nicolas Pareja is well stationed to concede a corner.
70' GOOOOOOOOAL!
JAMES FORREST makes an immediate impact to make it 2-2! Charlie Mulgrew drilled in a low ball from near the left corner flag, and Gary Hooper skilfully helped it on to the substitute who made no mistake with his finish.
69' CELTIC SUBSTITUTION
James Forrest is on for Victor Wanyama. The Bhoys force a corner after a lengthy spell of possession inside the Spartak half, but Sergei Pesyakov makes the catch.
66' ANTI-CLIMAX
Charlie Mulgrew smashes the free-kick straight at Sergei Pesyakov, who also gobbles up a tame follow-up effort.
65' FIRST SUBSTITUTION
Sergei Bryzgalov comes on for Demy De Zeeuw, while we still wait for the Celtic free-kick to be taken from dangerous territory.
62' RED CARD
Juan Insaurralde tugs down Gary Hooper just outside the 'D', denying him a goal-scoring opportunity. After a bit of dallying, a red card is produced and Insaurralde is off.
58' AMBROSE OVER
Efe Ambrose heads over from a Charlie Mulgrew free-kick. The defender should be a lot closer to finding the target than he is.
55' COMMONS DOWN
Kris Commons looks to have twisted something after coming off worse under a challenge from Kim Kallstrom. The stretcher is on for the midfielder.
52' CHANGE OF APPROACH?
It'll be interesting to see if Emmanuel Emenike's goal will be an incentive for Celtic to come out and show more offensive ambition, or if their primary concern will be staying solid and keeping the lead narrow, taking advantage of opportunities when they come. My money's on the latter.
49' ALLOWED TO SHOOT
Fraser Forster is furious as the defenders in front of him give Ari time and space to shoot, but his shot doesn't ask questions of Forster.
48' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Ari has a pop from distance which is slowed down by a deflection or two, and Fraser Forster really should do better than to palm the ball straight into the path of Demy De Zeeuw. The Dutchman clips the ball over him and EMMANUEL EMENIKE is in following up to stab in his second goal of the night.
47' GOOOOOOOAL!
Spartak Moscow are in front just two minutes into the second half!
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Both sides are unchanged as Celtic kick off the second half.
45' SPARTAK MOSCOW 1 CELTIC 1
Neil Lennon will be relatively happy with what he's seen so far. Spartak Moscow have predictably dominated in the possession stakes and have been a great deal more threatening in attack, although I can only recall Fraser Forster having to make one save to deny Nicolas Pareja from a free kick. Celtic took the lead against the run of play on 12 minutes when superb work from Victor Wanyama and Mikael Lustig led to Gary Hooper finishing coolly from about ten yards out. Just three minutes were left to play in the half when Emmanuel Emenike netted an equaliser of equal quality, with Kim Kallstrom and Demy De Zeeuw being the creators for the hosts. Second half commentary coming up shortly.
45' HALF TIME
It's 1-1 at the break.
42' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Kim Kallstrom plays a ball of pinpoint precision up from inside his own half. Demy De Zeeuw is on the end of it to lay the ball off beautifully first-time for EMMANUEL EMENIKE, who strokes home with ease from close-range.
41' GOOOOOOOOAL!
Spartak Moscow are level!
39' COMFORTABLE SAVE
Nicolas Pareja lifts a free-kick over the Celtic wall, but there's not much on it in terms of power. Fraser Forster parries out for a corner.
38' GLANCING HEADER
Georgios Samaras helps a Kris Commons free-kick onwards and into the arms of Sergei Pesyakov.
36' MULGREW OVER
Charlie Mulgrew snaps at a half-volley that was at a nice height for him 20 yards out.
34' OFF TARGET
Emmanuel Emenike has to stretch to get his head on a Kim Kallstrom cross after some neat build-up play by Spartak. Fraser Forster isn't tested.
30' BOOKING
Victor Wanyama is wrongly booked after making minimal to no contact on Demy De Zeeuw. Nicolas Pareja can't get in front of Georgios Samaras to do anything from the subsequent free-kick.
29' WELL WIDE
Kris Commons skews a shot well wide from about 30 yards.
27' FREE HEADER
Kelvin Wilson allows Emmanuel Emenike to meet a measured Mikael Lustig cross from the left, but the Spartak man can't direct his header on target.
24' FRACTIONALLY OFFSIDE
Kelvin Wilson tracks Emmanuel Emenike all the way before calmly nodding back to his own 'keeper in dangerous territory. Celtic then attack down the left, and Gary Hooper is flagged fractionally offside after latching onto a perfect Georgios Samaras cross and netting past Sergei Pesyakov.
21' FIRST BOOKING
Moments after a Gary Hooper run is halted in the box by a perfectly-timed Juan Insaurralde challenge, Charlie Mulgrew goes into the book for a tackle of less class on Demy De Zeeuw.
20' SPARTAK RESPONSE
It's been a vigorous response from Spartak, causing trouble from set-pieces in the last few minutes. A fierce drive from range by Aiden McGeady cannoned into Kelvin Wilson and forced one of those set-pieces.
17' HEADS WIDE
Nicolas Pareja rises to meet a Kim Kallstrom corner but can only head wide.
14' SHOCK LEAD
Celtic had been practically camped in their own half right from the off. Don't expect them to get any more adventurous now!
13' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Victor Wanyama comes storming through the midfield and releases Mikael Lustig down the right, who in turn plays a peach of a ball to GARY HOOPER rushing on into the box. Hooper's low finish across the 'keeper is perfectly executed, and Celtic are a goal to the good.
12' GOOOOOOOAL!
Celtic take the lead in Moscow!
9' IMPRESSING EARLY
Ari looks like he will be the danger man for Spartak tonight. Dmitri Kombarov has also looked lively down the left and Aiden McGeady has shown potential to be the threat that we know he can be.
6' STILL ALL SPARTAK
Spartak Moscow continue to dominate in the early stages, but a few instances of nervy Celtic defending has seen that Fraser Forster hasn't yet been tested. It'll be interesting to see how the visitors adapt to the artificial surface tonight.
3' EARLY PRESSURE
The opening exchanges see Spartak Moscow force three corners. Celtic are defending very deep.
1' KICK OFF
Spartak Moscow get the game underway. The Luzhniki Stadium is nowhere near full, but Celtic have brought a large contingent of travelling fans.
0' STAY TUNED
Check back here to see the teams hopefully before 16:30 BST, ahead of a full live text commentary from 17:00 BST – three hours behind Moscow time.
0' MCGEADY TO FEATURE
It will undoubtedly be a strange night for former Celtic fans' favourite Aiden McGeady, who runs out against the club where he started his career and spent six largely successful years before making the move to Moscow in 2010. The Ireland international has been a real hit in Russia too, earning plaudits for many stellar performances in his 49 appearances so far.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Right-back Adam Matthews represents the only fresh injury worry for Neil Lennon, following an ankle injury picked up by the Welsh international in training last Friday. Georgios Samaras, Joe Ledley and Beram Kayal all continued their returns to fitness with places on the bench against Motherwell at the weekend. The former two came on to make appearances and Kayal received playing time a few days earlier in the League Cup win against Raith Rovers. Spartak are plagued with a lengthy injury list – goalkeeper Andry Dykan, captain Sergei Parshivlyuk, Romulo and Welliton are all sidelined, while Evgeni Makeev, Nicolas Pareja, Marek Suchy and Kirill Kombarov are all doubts.
0' DOMESTIC FORM
As you might expect in the SPL, Celtic top the table, a point ahead of Motherwell with a game in hand. Things would be different though had they not have won 2-0 at Fir Park on Saturday to continue their strong start in the league. Spartak have both the blessing and curse of being faced with sterner competition in the Russian Premier League – rich oligarchs admittedly playing some part in that – where they currently lie fifth. Unai Emery's side have won their last three games on the bounce, the latest being a 3-1 victory at Amkar Perm at the weekend.
0' PREVIEW
The first of the second round of Champions League group stage fixtures kicks off in Moscow this evening, as giants of Russian football Spartak Moscow host Celtic in Group G. This group when drawn was understandably seen as being won by Barcelona with the other three scrapping for second place, although Spartak did give Barca an unexpected fright by leading 2-1 at the Nou Camp with 18 minutes to go before succumbing to a 3-2 defeat. Celtic meanwhile held Benfica to a 0-0 draw at Parkhead with a performance that drew mixed responses from fans. If you thought the Bhoys were a tad negative in that game, obviously don't put your money on expecting a radical change in Neil Lennon's tactics away from home tonight.
