90' LATE BARCA GOAL BREAKS CELTIC HEARTS
Celtic came to the Nou Camp knowing it would be a tough ask to get anything from a game against one of the best sides in Europe, but they travel back to Glasgow tonight having been moments away from a well-earned point. Jordi Alba`s stoppage time goal - practically the last kick of the game - sealed a 2-1 win for the Spanish side, who had pushed and pushed and dominated possession throughout. Celtic battled valiantly, though. Fraser Forster displayed some of the form that led him to receive an England call recently, pulling off numerous saves - some of them world class, while Efe Ambrose and Kelvin Wilson were rocks at the heart of the Celtic defence, with the latter executing one of the best tackles you`ll see on none other than Lionel Messi. Their resolve paid off early on, when Javier Mascherano bundled the ball into his own net after just 18 minutes. It wasn`t until the brink of half time that the home side levelled things up, with Iniesta combining beautifully with Xavi to equalise for his side. Into the second half, it was clear what Neil Lennon`s instructions were: defend, defend, defend. And defend Celtic did, right up until the 94th minute, when Adriano whipped in a left-footed cross from the right flank, with Jordi Alba on the end of it to scrappily divert it home. It was a cruel way to finish the game - especially given how hard Celtic battled - but with over 70% of possession in Barca`s favour, it certainly wasn`t an undeserved victory. Messi was unusually quiet - a marked man, you might say - but he will get his chance against Celtic again very soon - just like Celtic will get their chance of revenge - when Barcelona visit Scotland in two weeks time. It should be a corker.
90' FULL TIME
Barcelona snatch the three points at the Nou Camp, as Celtic are left distraught following a valiant 90 minutes of football.
90' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Football is such a cruel game. It really is. Barcelona grab what is almost certainly the winner with practically the last kick of the game. Adriano whips the ball in left-footed from the right-hand side, and the onrushing Jordi Alba bundles the ball in at the back post. You have to feel for Celtic, but you can`t say Barcelona didn`t deserve it.
90' GOAL!
Jordi Alba scores for Barcelona!
90' WOODWORK!
Fraser Forster is beaten for only the second time this evening, but the far post comes to his rescue after David Villa shot across goal. Barcelona can`t quite believe it.
88' LOTS OF PRESSURE
Barcelona are really pushing for a winner here. They`re more or less camped out on the edge of the Celtic box, but efforts from Xavi and then Adriano fly horribly wide of the goal. Celtic defending valiantly.
86' RECEIVING TREATMENT
Victor Wanyama momentarily leaves the field of play on one of the motorised stretchers, but returns almost immediately after receiving a bit of treatment. He`s been excellent in the centre of Celtic`s midfield this evening.
83' SONG GOES CLOSE
Cristian Tello whips in a cross to the right, and Alex Song challenges for the header. The ball is turned behind for a corner by Victor Wanyama, though. Good defending.
80' BARCELONA SUB
David Villa is on to replace Alexis Sanchez.
80' YELLOW CARD
Adriano becaomes the second player in the referee`s book this evening. Ten minutes to play at the Nou Camp.
77' SUBS FOR BOTH SIDES
Cristian Tello replaces Pedro for Barcelona, while Biram Kayal comes on for Charlie Mulgrew for Celtic.
75' ANOTHER WORLD CLASS SAVE!
Fraser Forster deserves a game between the sticks for England on this performance alone. He`s having the game of his life here. Iniesta crosses for Messi, who is completely unmarked and heads goalwards from inside the box, but Forster produces a sprawling save to keep Barca at bay. Wow.
74' BARCA DENIED AGAIN
Fraser Forster comes to Celtic`s rescue yet again, this time denying Alexis Sanchez`s first-time effort from point blank range. The Chilean had latched onto a lovely chip from Jordi Alba.
71' YELLOW CARD
First booking of the night, and it goes to Javier Mascherano, who upends James Forrest. Just before that, Kelvin Wilson pulled off one of the best tackles you`ll see, on none other than Messi himself. One for the scrapbook.
68' WHAT A SAVE!
Fraser Forster pulls of an absolutely top drawer save to deny Lionel Messi. Pedro plays a low cross in from the right and Messi looks to divert home from inside the six-yard box, but Forster stands strong and produces a big hand to bat the ball away to safety.
66' MARKED MAN
We`re yet to see anywhere near the best of Lionel Messi, who is hounded and pressured by a number of green and white bodies every time he gets the ball. He tests Fraser Forster again with a left-footed curled effort, which the goalkeeper collects cleanly down low.
64' ALMOST AWAY
Kris Commons almost makes an immediate impact, breaking away down the right flank and spotting Gary Hooper alone in the box. But Commons` cross is intercepted by Javier Mascherano, who cleans up and clears.
62' CELTIC SUB
Scott Brown - who has an ongoing hip problem - is replaced by Kris Commons, handing over the captain`s armband to Joe Ledley.
58' ALL ALONE UP TOP
Gary Hooper has had a quiet night so far - but not by choice. He`s just not had any service whatsoever, with Celtic simply clearing the ball into space - or rather, to a Barca player - as opposed to trying to pick out the striker. And Georgios Samaras` departure has meant he`s even more lonely up there.
56' TRICKERY
Another good bit of build-up from Barcelona, as Pedro gets the ball on the right and tricks his way past two defenders before dinking in a little cross that is beaten away for a corner. This pressure is just incessant.
53' BARCA DEFENCE EXPOSED
Charlie Mulgrew whips in a lovely corner - Celtic`s first of the game - and Barcelona just fall asleep. They`re let off the hook when Victor Wanyama bundles the ball wide - not sure how much the midfielder knew about it in fairness.
51' DISAPPOINTING
James Forrest wins a good free kick for Celtic, just outside the Barca box. Charlie Mulgrew - often so dangerous from set pieces, as proved by his delivery for his side`s goal - stands over it, but blasts the ball straight into the Barcelona wall. Emillio Izaguirre lashes miles wide on the rebound.
48' SIMILAR VEIN
Barcelona have begun the second half in a very similar fashion to how they ended the first - dominating possession and playing fluid football. Celtic are dropping really deep, which is a worry. Would be interesting to hear what Neil Lennon had to say at the break.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Barcelona get things underway for what promises to be a colossal second half for Celtic.
45' HALF TIME
That`s the break. Celtic let their lead slip in the final minute of the half, but they won`t be too disappointed with the way things are going so far. Barcelona have had the bulk of the play, but Fraser Forster has been equal to all but one of their efforts on goal. An interesting second period beckons.
45' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Oh my, that is wonderful. Super little interplay between Iniesta and Xavi, who plays his compatriot in with a lovely, neat, first-time ball, and Iniesta does brilliantly to steer the ball past Forster. You have to say it`s been coming, but that really was a special goal.
45' GOAL!
Andres Iniesta scores for Barcelona!
43' CELTIC SUB
Sadly, Georgios Samaras is forced to depart, with James Forrest on to replace him.
41' HOBBLING OFF
Ouch. Georgios Samaras is down and receiving some treatment here, after landing awkwardly after going up for a header. It doesn`t look as if the big Greek forward will be able to continue.
38' CLOSE AGAIN
Messi goes close with another free kick, this time forcing Forster to dive to his left. But like his previous effort, this one is inches too high. So close to an equaliser.
35' UNORTHODOX EFFORT
Alexis Sanchez brilliantly picks out Xavi, who`s crowded by a number of Celtic bodies in the box, but manages to do a karate kick of sorts to divert the ball goalwards. Unfortunately for him, it sails well wide. The crowd are patronisingly cheering everytime Celtic complete a pass - which, let me tell you, is not very often!
32' KEEP-BALL SESSION
Watching Barcelona play really is a treat. Celtic just can`t get any possession whatsoever. Everytime they clear the ball, it goes straight back to a Barca player, and the move just starts again. Forster has been good so far, and he makes a low save from Adriano`s shot.
29' ANOTHER GOOD CHANCE
Marc Bartra, who was denied just before Celtic`s opener by a strong save from Fraser Forster, has another excellent chance for Barcelona. Celtic switch off as the home side play a short corner, the ball is whipped in and Bartra, unmarked, heads narrowly wide of the far post.
26' NICE REVERSE PASS
The home side continue their dominance of possession, but are yet to turn it into concrete chances. Iniesta plays a lovely reverse ball into the path of Jordi Alba, who is unfortunately called offside to bring an end to a promising looking Barcelona move.
22' WHISTLED OVER
Barcelona are clearly stunned by Celtic`s opener, but they get a chance to level things up when they`re awarded a free kick in a good position. Messi takes it on, but fires a well struck attempt just over the bar. Not sure Forster would have got to it if it was on target.
18' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Almost immediately after Fraser Forster denies Barca with a smart point blank save, Celtic go up the other end and take the lead. Charlie Mulgrew`s delicious free kick from the deep is bundled into his own net by Javier Mascherano, under pressure from Georgios Samaras. An absolute dream start for Neil Lennon, whose side have barely touched the ball so far - nevermind threatened a goal.
18' GOAL!
Javier Mascherano puts the ball into his own net! Celtic go 1-0 up!
16' TAKING NO CHANCES
Positive build-up play from Barcelona, who string a number of passes together on the edge of the box. The ball finds its way to Adriano on the right, who cuts inside and attempts a left footed curler, but it`s headed behind by Kelvin Wilson.
13' GOOD RECOVERY
Adriano shows good pace to recover after Charlie Mulgrew chases down his slightly nervy clearance. He plays the ball off Mulgrew for a Barca goal kick.
9' DANGEROUS CROSS
Jordi Alba has seen a lot of the ball in these early stages. He overlaps Iniesta down the left and crosses towards Pedro, who can`t quite stretch enough to divert home.
6' HANDBALL SHOUT
Jordi Alba is played through in the box down the left, and attempts to cross but the ball hits Efe Ambrose and goes behind for a corner. The fans and players appeal for handball, but the referee waves it away. We`re only just over five minutes into this one, and already Celtic have barely touched the ball.
2' WHAT A CHANCE!
Barcelona almost off the mark within two minutes, as Alexis Sanchez is slotted through but dinks just wide of the far post. It looked as though Kelvin Wilson let the Chilean go, but luckily for him, his early effort was a yard or two off target.
1' HERE WE GO
We`re underway at the Nou Camp, as Celtic get things going.
0' CELTIC TEAM
Scott Brown and Georgios Samaras return after missing Celtic`s 5-0 drubbing of St Mirren with injuries, with James Forrest and Kris Commons also back, but only on the bench. FULL LINE-UP: Forster, Lustig, Wilson, Ambrose, Izaguirre, Samaras, Brown, Wanyama, Ledley, Mulgrew, Hooper. Subs: Zaluska, Kayal, Rogne, Commons, Forrest, Matthews, Miku.
0' BARCELONA TEAM
As expected, Puyol, Pique, Dani Alves and Busquets miss out, with Javier Mascherano starting at centre back alongside Marc Bartra. FULL LINE-UP: Valdes, Adriano, Bartra, Mascherano, Jordi Alba, Xavi, Song, Iniesta, Sanchez, Messi, Pedro. Subs: Pinto, Montoya, Fabregas, Villa, Jonathan, Tello, Sergi Roberto
0' LITTLE MASTER
A plethora of Barcelona players could feature in this section, but clearly, the Spanish side`s shining light is Lionel Messi. Fifty-three of this 268 Barca goals have come in the Champions League, and he`s already bagged two in this year`s competition. He`s also got five in his last two in La Liga, including a hat-trick in a thrilling 5-4 win over Deportivo. Celtic`s defence could be in for a busy night.
0' CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SO FAR
Barcelona top Group G with two wins from their first two games, with Celtic currently sitting in second after a draw against Benfica and a win against Spartak Moscow - their first ever away victory in the Champions League.
0' WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE
For Celtic, last weekend it was St Mirren; tonight it`s Barcelona. Despite the wealth of talent available to Barca boss Tito Vilanova, tonight`s result might not be as odds on as one might think. The four-time Champions League winners are currently in the middle of a defensive crisis, with Puyol, Pique, Dani Alves and Busquets all sidelined. If Celtic can come out of the blocks with all guns blazing and look to expose the weaknesses of the Barcelona new-look centre back pairing, then the Scottish champions might actually have a realistic chance of getting something from the game. At the same time, though, whilst Barca`s defence is lacking, their attack is anything but. Messi, Villa, Fabregas, Iniesta, Sanchez, Pedro; I could go on. If the away side allow the floodgates to open early and set themselves up to defend deep all evening, it could be a long and arduous night. But if Neil Lennon sends his men out to battle with fire in their bellies, and instils a nothing-to-lose mentality in them, then maybe - just maybe - they can go back to Glasgow with something to show for their efforts.
0' THE MATCH
Celtic have the unenviable task of taking on Barcelona at the Nou Camp this evening, in Group G of the Champions League. Away trips don`t come much tougher than this. Kick-off is 19:45 BST.
