Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' RECAP: CHELSEA FALL TO EXPERT SHAKHTAR
No-one would have argued were you to suggest that it was Shakhtar who were the competition's defending champions, as they flattered Chelsea with some profligate finishing in both halves, though the result was never in doubt at any stage. Pace, fearless ambition and an overall greater degree of quality in all areas of the field carried the Ukranian league leaders to by far their best ever Champions League result. A frenetic first half saw both sides threaten, and Fernando Torres had already twice failed to convert good opportunities when the ball was gifted to Alex Teixeira on 17 minutes and he smashed it low past Petr Cech. Continual chances at both ends sank into a pattern that only carried on in the second half. Chelsea had enough of the ball and did create openings, but for each one, Shakhtar seemed to carve out an equally opportune moment, so it was no surprise when they stretched their lead. Having weathered an early storm after the restart they broke with pace, and Luiz Adriano put Fernandinho through to rifle home. With the visitors star-studded line-up demoralised, a mini onslaught saw Fernandinho, Luiz Adriano and Tomas Hubschman all go close without reply. Oscar's late consolation was always too late to give them a realistic chance of snatching a draw they never would have deserved. As Juventus were held to a draw at Nordjaersland, Shakhtar are now in pole position in the group. They will visit Stamford Bridge in two weeks, after the Blues have twice been tested against Manchester United. The Premier League leaders' season may well have a very different complexion in a fortnight's time.
90' IT'S ALL OVER
That's it. Shakhtar triumph.
90' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
John Obi Mikel floats a free kick straight into the arms of Andriy Pyatov from an inviting position. That was a waste for the visitors.
90' CHELSEA CONSOLATION?
Branislav Ivanovic got to the by-line, squared it and Chelsea's own Brazilian stroked it home from six yards to set up what will no doubt be a frenetic final four minutes.
88' GOOOAAALLL!!!
2-1, Oscar strikes!
86' DOMINANT DONETSK
Shakhtar have made their way back into the second half and easily had its best chances. There have been notable performances from all-action full back Darijo Srna and Tomas Hubschman, who has not given Chelsea a kick in the final third of the field. You wonder whether Roberto Di Matteo may wish he had a Plan B on these rough and tumble European away days.
83' HOME CHANGE
Ilsinho enters the fray to face his teammate at Internacional last season Oscar and replace goal scorer Alex Teixeira.
81' ACTION AT BOTH ENDS
A knock-down sees Tomas Hubschman poke it agonisingly wide before Chelsea respond with Juan Mata who is thwarted by Andriy Pyatov arriving at his feet.
75' ON SHAKHTARGET
Despite having less of the possession, Shakhtar have still looked the more impressive in front of goal. Alex Teixeira and Fernandinho have both come close from range. It is not, let me assure you, going to be Chelsea's night. They are on the brink of their first defeat of the season.
71' STURRIDGE ON
Daniel Sturridge replaces Fernando Torres for Chelsea. Can his pace and power open up a defiant Ukranian defence?
70' JOHN OBI MISKICK
John Obi Mikel gets a sight of goal from five yards out, but, without a goal in 230 Blues games, he's not the one you'd have wanted to see with the ball at his feet.
68' STALEMATE
The game has reached a stalemate with tough tackling in midfield and neither side giving anything away, though Fernando Torres and Eden Hazard have both had half chances for Chelsea.
63' SURPRISE IN DENMARK
In the group's other game, Nordsjaelland have a surprise 1-0 cushion at home to Italian giants Juventus so far, which is a crumb of comfort for Chelsea. If things stay as they are, Shaktar would go three points clear of the Blues on seven points and Juve would go bottom with only two.
59' RAMIRES HAS A SHOT
A 40-yard thumper from Ramires forces Andriy Pyatov to turn it away. Needless to say, Chelsea must respond quickly, but they've been under par all night and only a true optimist could see them drawing level now.
55' TWO SIDES
It's a story of two approaches so far. Chelsea couldn't take advantage playing on the break and then when Shakhtar were on the back foot they broke and doubled their lead. They're well worth it as well.
55' SUPER SHAKHTAR
Absolutely clinical from the home side. They disposessed Chelsea who were sloppy in the middle of the park and Luiz Adriano fed Fernandinho who made no mistake and beat Petr Cech from an angle from 15 yards out.
52' GOOOAAALLL!!!
2-0 Shakhtar! Fernandinho!
51' BLUES PLAYING BETTER
Juan Mata receives the ball on the edge of the area from Ashley Cole and fires it just over. Chelsea have started much better since the break.
48' CHELSEA BALL EARLY ON
Oscar unwittingly blocks a thunderous Fernando Torres effort as Chelsea secure some early second half possession.
46' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go again. Can Chelsea get back into this or will Shakhtar seal the win? Incidentally the home side have employed a few new fan-orientated strategies recently. The Champions League logo was paraded before the game by 24 lucky competition winners and two fans won the opportunity to cut the pitch in preparation for it! Therefore Chelsea will defend the end which has 'Hello Mum' cut into it, whilst Shakhtar have the 'Marry Me Olga' side of the ground.
45' HALF TIME
There it is, the whistle goes. Chelsea have been under the cosh for long periods of time despite having chances of their own, principally for a misfiring Fernando Torres. The home side could arguably be out of sight, but will they rue not taking their chances? Join us shortly for the second half...
45' APPROACHING HALF TIME
Roberto Di Matteo's only consolation after an embarrassment of chances for Shakhtar is that they have only put one away and that can often be costly as the Italian gets an opportunity to reorganise at half time.
43' COMEDY OF CHANCES
TWO Shaktar forwards slash wildly at the ball from point blank range with only Cech to beat. This is agonising, one of these opportunities has got to go in. There's chances and then there's Chances! A brilliant save from the Chelsea goalkeeper though.
40' SHAKHTAR THREATEN
Willian's defence-splitting pass is dinked delightfully through to Henrikh Mkhitaryan who is unlucky not to beat Petr Cech. From the resultant corner, there is once again havoc in the Chelsea penalty area. Something has got to give sooner or later with all this goalmouth action.
36' TORRES THROUGH
Not for the first time, Oscar picks out Fernando Torres with a majestic pass but, having taken it down beautifully, he fluffs his lines as hesitation allows the goalkeeper to smother the ball at his feet.
33' SETTLING DOWN
The game settles for the first time. Shakhtar had 54% of the possession in the first half hour and deservedly have the lead.
31' DONETSK ON TOP
Shakhtar's adventurous approach is leaving gaps for Chelsea but there's no doubt that the home side are on top as they win all the second balls and create more incisive attacks when in possession. This is an uncharacteristically error-strewn midfield performance from the English side.
27' SO CLOSE
Ramires and Fernando Torres beat the offside trap but the Spaniard is slow in attempting to round the advancing goalkeeper. A golden chance spurned before Shakhtar go straight up the other end and almost score themselves. This is a great game. Both goals are living charmed lives.
22' FRENETIC START
Oscar is sent through but Andriy Pyatov gathers at his feet and releases his midfield once more. This is the type of game that you sense has goals in it. It's been end to end for the first 20 minutes.
17' CHELSEA CHANGE
A sad sight. Frank Lampard is struggling and replaced by Eden Hazard whose first job is to stick a foot in as Fernandinho yet again gets a sight of goal in the area.
17' BRAZILIAN FLAIR
Fernandinho cuts inside to unleash a shot much like his voluminous afro: high, wide and handsome. Four Brazilians started the game for the home side.
15' NIP AND TUCK
An early goal, as always, has opened the game up, with Chelsea keen to respond and Shakhtar freed up a little and buoyed by their lead. Both teams are exchanging possession and sizing one another up.
12' SPEEDY ENCOUNTER
Quick work from the home midfield deny Torres and Ramires breaks upfield and Shakhtar respond with pace. A fairly furious start to the game in cacophonous noise.
10' SHAKHTAR GET THE BLUES
There's no doubt this Shakhtar side are a serious footballing unit and no-one at Chelsea was underestimating their task away in a very imposing stadium but it will throw the cat amongst the pigeions for both themselves and Juventus if the Ukranians get a win tonight. Work to do for the defending champions.
7' DONETSK AHEAD AFTER 3 MINUTES
What a start! A very soft goal for Chelsea to concede as a short throw-in twice wasn't cleared and it squirmed to Alex Teixeira whose precise shot across Petr Cech low to his left was very well struck. A great start from the home side's point of view.
3' GOOOAALLL!!!
1-0 to Shakhtar!!!
1' HERE WE GO
We're underway, Shakhtar sporting a very fluorescent orange and Chelsea in their home blue strip.
0' TEAM NEWS
Good evening and welcome to the Ukraine. The teams have been announced. Chelsea adopt a slightly cautious approach and make two changes from the side that came back to beat Spurs in stunning style on Saturday with old heads John Terry and Frank Lampard replacing Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard respectively. Shakhtar are unchanged from the side that drew with Juventus. The teams in full are. SHAKHTAR: Andriy Pyatov ,Darijo Srna ,Oleksandr Kucher ,Yaroslav Rakitskiy ,Razvan Rat ,Tomas Hubschman ,Fernandinho ,Alex Teixeira ,Henrikh Mkhitaryan ,Willian ,Luiz Adriano CHELSEA: Petr Cech ,Branislav Ivanovic ,David Luiz ,John Terry ,Ashley Cole ,Ramires ,John Obi Mikel ,Frank Lampard ,Oscar ,Fernando Torres ,Juan Mata.
0' PREVIEW: SHAKHTAR DONETSK VS. CHELSEA
Two sides level on four points in the group, and unbeaten domestically this term, meet at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, where the Chelsea team were met at the airport by some of the 1,200 Russian Blues supporters who have travelled to the Ukraine to support owner Roman Abramovich's club. The hosts are comfortably 12 points clear at the top of their domestic league and know that a win tonight would take them to seven points in the group and in pole position to pip either Chelsea or Juventus to one of the two qualifying spots. They have never lost at home in four games against English sides, and Shakhtar's draw away in Italy will not have gone unnoticed by Roberto Di Matteo. Their squad has eight Brazilians, including Ilsinho, who played for Internacional with Chelsea's Oscar last season, and a potent strike force of Luiz Adriano and Henrikh Mykitaryan, who has 14 league goals already this season. In fact, Shakhtar have scored in every competitive game for almost a year.
0' TUESDAY BLUES
Four points clear at the top of the Premier League, Roberto Di Matteo continues to make managing at the highest level look like a piece of cake, but knows his dynamic Chelsea side are in for one of the toughest tests of his reign so far against Shakhtar. As they seek to become the first ever team to defend a Champions League title, the young Italian is clearly relishing life at Stamford Bridge, "I'm just happy be to working with my players. I have this club in my heart. I think that these players deserve all the credit after an extremely difficult season last time out. Now we have integrated new players in our system. I'm here to help, and to do my job as well as I can, and I hope that will continue for a long time." he said, in the pre-match press conference. Form player Juan Mata also remarked upon Shakhtar's passing style and said he expected the game to be a "fight for the ball".
0' MUTUAL APPRECIATION
Both manager's paid tribute to one another ahead of the game, with Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu saying of Chelsea, "Last season they played a different brand of football as they were concentrated on defence, hoping for set pieces and some Didier Drogba magic. However, today their style has changed, as they have bought some new players such as Oscar and Hazard. We expect that the visitors will attack a lot. I hope that our team will show tactical nous and an ability to adapt to Chelsea's game as well as they did in Turin against Juve." Familiar with Lucescu, Di Matteo responded, "I remember [his] work in Italy very well. All his teams stuck to the same philosophy – they always try to play possession football. You can see how Shakhtar pass the ball. You can see the structure of the team. They are very good tactically and they have a lot of quick players." However, the man himself hinted that he may well sacrifice style for reward tonight: "I don't really care about the entertainment aspect of our game right now, because our main goal is to get three points. For the first time since I came to Shakhtar, we are playing against the European champions. This obviously provides a perfect motivation for the players, as it's a big honour for our city and our club."
