Minute Commentary
90' ARSENAL CLING ON TO SCHALKE POINT
Arsenal clung on to claim a point against Schalke in the Champions League this evening, despite being 2-0 up after 26 minutes. Theo Walcott put the Gunners ahead, nipping in to tap into an empty net, before Olivier Giroud grabbed his first ever Champions League goal with a well-executed diving header from Lukas Podolski's cross. Both Gunners goals came against the run of play, so it was perhaps unsurprising that Schalke pulled a goal back before half time, with the in-form Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finishing clinically with what was his first sniff of the game. Into the second period, Schalke contined to put Arsenal onto the back foot, and found themselves level when Jefferson Farfan scored with a shot from the right - via a deflection off Gunners skipper Thomas Vermaelen. Both sides had chances to win it - Walcott for Arsenal, Huntelaar for Schalke - but neither were able to get their noses ahead. It finished, perhaps deservedly, 2-2.
90' FULL TIME
That's it. Schalke come back from 2-0 down to claim a point at home to Arsenal.
90' BRILLIANT CHANCE WASTED
With what might well be the last kick of the game, Theo Walcott has wasted a great chance to produce a textbook smash-and-grab for Arsenal. The winger is played through down the middle but just can't get the ball out of his feet properly, and his weak shot is palmed away by Lars Unnerstall.
90' SCHALKE SUB
Lewis Holtby is replaced by Tranquillo Barnetta.
90' COUPLE OF PENALTY CALLS
Francis Coquelin's welcome into this game is a huge shove in the back from a Schalke defender in the box. It's waved away by the referee - just as a similar challenge on Theo Walcott was moments earlier.
88' ARSENAL SUBS
First changes of the night for Arsenal, with only a handful of minutes left. Francis Coquelin and Andre Santos are coming on for Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla.
86' SLICK PASSING
Thomas Vermaelen is forced to temporarily hobble off after a colission on the left flank. That means Arsenal are a man short when Schalke string a number of good passes together on the edge of the box - the move culminating in a wayward effort that flies over the bar from Jermaine Jones.
84' NARROWLY OVER
Another incisive Schalke breakaway, as Jones plays the ball out to Farfan. His ball into Huntelaar is inch-perfect but the Dutchman's header flies narrowly over. He's called offside anyway, so is let off in some ways.
81' GROUP B UPDATE
Olympiakos have just taken the lead against Montpellier in the other game in Group B. The French side had got a goal back in the second period but find themselves behind again with not long left to play. Schalke on top as it stands, with Arsenal second.
78' YELLOW CARD
Jermaine Jones becomes the third Schalke player to be booked tonight.
74' WOODWORK... BUT OFFSIDE
The ever-dangerous Theo Walcott agonisingly hits the post for Arsenal, but luckily for his side, is called offside. It's the right call, so Walcott will be somewhat relieved that he missed his chance.
73' BETTER FROM ARSENAL
Arsenal have barely had a sniff in the second half. But they string a number of good passes together in the Schalke half, but are let down by the finishing of Santi Cazorla, who from the edge of the box, fires a left-footed effort well over the bar.
70' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Great chance for Schalke, but the industrious and influential Lewis Holtby scuffs it. The midfielder finds himself in a good position with players ahead of him, but opts to shoot himself before watching his effort fly disappointingly wide of the post.
68' SCHALKE SUB
Just before Schalke's equaliser, Marco Hoger - who himself had come on as a substitute - was forced off the field because of the injury he suffered in the tussle with Podolski moments earlier. Kyriakos Papadopoulos is on to replace him.
67' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Schalke are back on level terms having clawed back a two-goal defecit. It's Jefferson Farfan who grabs the German side's equaliser, although it might go down as a Thomas Vermaelen own goal. The Peruvian winger finds himself in acres of space inside the box and shoots goalwards. His attempt - which was probably going in anyway - is diverted into his own goal by Vermaelen.
67' GOAL!
Jefferson Farfan scores for Schalke!
65' DECENT ATTEMPT
Lewis Holtby executes a decent effort at goal, and almost gets a chance on the rebound after Vito Mannone parried the ball. It's cleared up by the Arsenal defence, though.
62' YELLOW CARD
Questionable refereeing from the Italian official. Lukas Podolski tussles with Marco Hoger - who has endured a torrid evening against the German since being introduced midway into the first half - and the Schalke defender goes down with an ankle injury, with Podolski in control of the ball in the box. He plays on, and finds himself in a great position but is frustrated when the referee pulls it back to attend to the injured Hoger. Podolski kicks the ball against the advertising hoardings and is duly booked for dissent. It wasn't a head injury though, so why did the official stop the game?
61' HEADED WIDE
Reasonable chance for Schalke, as Roman Neustadter nods wide from a Jefferson Farfan corner. Moments earlier, Marco Hoger's shot was blocked on the line by Mikel Arteta, with suspicions of handball by the Spaniard.
58' CALMED DOWN SLIGHTLY
After what seemed like an endless stream of Schalke attacks at the beginning of the second period, Arsenal have regained a foothold in the game and the furious pace at which it was being played appears to have cooled slightly. Still finely balanced.
54' UNDER THE COSH
Arsenal are having to withstand some heavy pressure here, with Schalke pressing for an equaliser. Efforts on goal from Jermaine Jones and Benedikt Howedes are beaten away by the Gunners defence, and a call for a penalty for handball is brushed off by the referee. Replays show the ball does indeed hit the arm of Per Mertesacker, but it'd be a cruel decision to award a penalty, given the German defender was falling at the time.
51' GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
Vito Mannone denies Klaas-Jan Huntelaar a golden opportunity, producing an excellent stop to deny the in-form Dutchman a second goal. Huntelaar just peels off Mertesacker before being played through in acres of space. He has time to adjust and pick his spot, but Mannone stands strong to keep Arsenal's one goal advantage intact.
47' WASTED CHANCE
Good work on the left by Lukas Podolski, who does well to squeeze a cross in after being played through by Santi Cazorla. Podolski's cross picks out the unmarked Olivier Giroud, who opts to volley goalwards when a header might have been more effective. His effort is slammed into the ground before going behind.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Schalke get things going for the second period.
45' HALF TIME
Huntelaar's goal was pretty much the last kick of the first half, and is sure to have made his manager's team talk a tad easier. Arsenal go into the break 2-1 in front, but have been on the back foot for much of the first half. An interesting second period is lined up.
45' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Arguably the first sniff at goal that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has had in this game, and he laps it up brilliantly. Right on the brink of half time as well. Lewis Holtby acrobatically plays Huntelaar through on goal and the Dutchman slides a driven left-footed effort past Mannone.
45' GOAL!
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scores for Schalke!
42' YELLOW CARD
Christian Fuchs makes his way into the Italian referee's book, meaning both of Schalke's centre halves are now on yellow cards. Giroud heads straight into the goalkeeper's arms from the resulting free kick.
40' POWERFUL EFFORT
Schalke go as close as they've come to scoring in this one, with Jefferson Farfan shooting narrowly over after a driving run down the middle of the field.
38' GROUP B UPDATE
Elsewhere in Group B, Olympiakos lead Montpellier 1-0 after Paulo Machado put the Greek side ahead after just four minutes. As it stands, Arsenal top the group, with Olympiakos only a point behind second-placed Schalke.
36' FLOODING FORWARD
Schalke really look threatening on the break. Afellay again finds himself at the centre of the German side's attack, and after his cross is partially-cleared by the heel of Per Mertesacker, Jefferson Farfan's long range effort is beaten away by the Arsenal defence.
33' IN A BIT OF PAIN
Bit of a stoppage currently, as Olivier Giroud receives treatment for what looks like a hamstring strain. It looks like he's going to be alright to carry on, which will please Arsene Wenger.
31' ANOTHER EFFORT
Schalke go close again through Ibrahim Afellay, whose low drive flies wide of Vito Mannone's post. They're still on top possession-wise, but have failed to make it count.
27' SCHALKE SUB
Just before Arsenal's second goal, Marco Hoger replaced Atsuto Uchida for Schalke.
26' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Olivier Giroud puts Arsenal 2-0 ahead with a real striker's finish and the first Champions League goal of his career. Lukas Podolski does well on the left to hold up the ball, and crosses into the mixer for Giroud, who dives forward to head in unmarked. The Schalke defence completely fell asleep, and only have themselves to blame for both goals now.
26' GOAL!
Olivier Giroud scores for Arsenal!
25' YELLOW CARD
Joel Matip upends Santi Cazorla and becomes the first Schalke player in the referee's book this evening. Cazorla himself received a caution earlier on.
22' SHELLSHOCKED
After dominating the opening period, Schalke will be left scratching their heads as to why they now find themselves 1-0 behind. They're still enjoying much of the possession - even since Walcott's opener - so Arsenal still need to get a firm foothold in this match.
18' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
He began on the bench against Manchester United, but Arsene Wenger repaid Theo Walcott's recent good form with a start tonight, and it appears to have paid off. You have to say it's against the run of play, but Arsenal go 1-0 nonetheless. A speculative ball upfield from Per Mertesacker is headed backwards by Roman Neustadter into the path of Olivier Giroud, who races through on goal. Benedikt Howedes recovers brilliantly to deny Giroud a shot, but Walcott is there to nip the ball over both players' bodies to tap into an empty net.
18' GOAL!
Theo Walcott scores for Arsenal!
16' BIT BETTER
Jack Wilshere has looked the most likely to make something happen for Arsenal in these early stages. The England midfielder looks comfortable in possession, and has asked questions of the Schalke defence more than once with tricky, mazy runs. He attempts to jink his way through on goal but is dispossessed, with the ball going behind for a corner.
13' JUST OVER
Jefferson Farfan swings in a corner and centre back Benedikt Howedes heads just over. Vito Mannone probably had it covered.
9' EXCELLENT COUNTER
Worrying signs for Arsenal. Lukas Podolski easily loses the ball in the Schalke half, and the Germans break with blistering pace through Ibrahim Afellay down the left. The Dutch international has the beating of Bacary Sagna and manages to squeeze a left-footed shot in from just inside the box. Vito Mannone produces a good hand to turn Afellay's effort away, though, and it's cleared to safety. The Gunners really struggling to get into this one so far. Schalke much the better side.
5' END-TO-END
Nice build-up play from Arsenal, with Jack Wilshire sliding the ball to Theo Walcott on the right flank. The England winger looks to jink his way into a shooting position but is tackled by Schalke, who immediately look to counter. The ball is played to the feet of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who, with his back to goal, executes a delightful flick into the path of Christian Fuchs. Fuchs' shot bobbles wide of Vito Mannone's far post, though.
3' LIVELY START
Schalke get off to a decent start, with Atsuto Uchida planting a cross into the Arsenal box within a minute of the kick-off. The Gunners have barely had a foot on the ball so far.
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal get things underway in Germany, playing in their changed strip of yellow shirts, maroon shorts and yellow socks. Schalke line up in their familiar blue shirts, white shorts and blue socks.

Join us just before kick-off for all the up-to-date team news and all the action from Germany.
0' ARSENAL EARLY TEAM NEWS
Aaron Ramsey was forced off with a groin strain against Manchester United at the weekend and joins an Arsenal injury list that includes the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho, Kieran Gibbs, Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky. Theo Walcott is touch-and-go after being taken ill overnight, while young Argentinean goalkeeper Damian Martinez, who featured in Arsenal's 7-5 Capital One Cup win over Reading - is ineligible and is replaced in the squad by James Shea.
0' SCHALKE EARLY TEAM NEWS
Kyriakos Papadopoulos is doubtful for the home side after cutting his eyebrow in the 3-2 defeat to Hoffenheim on Saturday. Apart from that, Huub Stevens has no new injury worries and goes into the game with the likes of Huntelaar, Afellay and Holtby all available.
0' TOUGH OPPOSITION
Only Bayern Munich have more points than Schalke in this year's Bundesliga, and Arsenal will know that they will be in for a difficult time when they travel to Germany tonight. Two goals in the final 15 minutes at the Emirates Stadium - from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay - sealed a deserved 2-0 victory for the visitors, as they moved to the top of Group B. It was a game in which chances were few and far between, but the German side made their opportunities count by snatching all three points late on. The only time the Gunners have faced Schalke away from home in the past was almost exactly 11 years ago, in the 2001/02 Champions League. It was the Germans that won that one - overcoming an Arsenal side that included the likes of Ashley Cole, Robert Pires and Sylvain Wiltord to win 3-2.
0' WENGER LOOKING FOR RETURN TO FORM
Arsenal began the 2012/13 campaign in solid, and at times, blistering form. A 2-1 loss at home to Chelsea was their only defeat in their first 10 games in all competitions - a spell of fixtures that saw them face Manchester City and Liverpool and appear twice in Europe. But after going down 1-0 away to Norwich last month - a game that they travelled to by private jet, with some critics claiming, albeit with their tongue firmly in their cheek, that the Gunners players must have been suffering from jet lag to lose - we haven't quite seen the same easy-on-the-eye Arsenal. They've conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League this season - something that Arsene Wenger has deservedly lauded - but it's the Gunners' attacking threat that has left the Arsenal boss somewhat perplexed in recent games. He talked about his side "finding their game back" after Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United. Tonight's Champions League clash against Schalke - a team that inflicted a comfortable 2-0 victory on Arsenal at the Emirates two weeks ago - will be viewed as a must-win, as the North London outfit set their sights on maximum points from their three remaining group games in the competition.
0' THE MATCH
Two weeks after losing 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal once again face German side Schalke 04 - this time at the Veltins-Arena - in Group B of the Champions League tonight. Kick-off is 19:45 GMT.
