Minute Commentary
90' WATT A NIGHT AS CELTIC HUMBLE BARCELONA
Substitute Tony Watt struck late on to put Celtic out of Barcelona's reach in an astounding 2-1 Champions League Group G victory at Celtic Park. The Bhoys were pinned back in their own half for 90 minutes but defended like their lives depended on it from the first whistle to the last. Victor Wanyama scored the opener in the 21st minute, powering in a header from Charlie Mulgrew's corner while the visitors were kept to a Lionel Messi effort that hit the bar. It was more of the same after the break, with Fraser Forster pulling off a number of top-drawer saves to keep the scoreline intact. Celtic then went two up when Watt ran onto a long ball and supplied a calm finish. The Catalans should have had a man sent off shortly after that as Javier Mascherano tugged back Watt as he again went through on goal, and Messi then finally pulled one back in stoppage time. It was too little too late as exhausted Celtic drew on every last ounce of energy to see the game out and clinch a jaw-dropping victory. Not only will this night go down in Celtic folklore, but with Benfica beating Spartak Moscow their presence in the Champions League knockout stages is looking ever more assured.
90' FULL TIME CELTIC 2 BARCELONA 1
That's it! The final whistle rings out and the crowd rise to their feet as one to salute a Celtic team that have achieved one of their finest ever results. What a stupendous night for Scottish football.
90' DESPERATE DEFENDING
It's getting like the Alamo now as Celtic repeatedly clear the ball, only for Barcelona to play it into the box time and again. Just a little way to go now.
90' GOAL!!! BARCELONA
The inevitable finaly comes to pass as LIONEL MESSI scores from point-blank range at the second attempt. That was hugely unfortunate for Forster, who did magnificently to stop the diminutive Argentine's initial shot.
90' PEDRO GOES CLOSE
Pedro comes closest to pulling one back for the visitors as he gets a toe-end to Iniesta's cross, only for the goalbound effort to bounce off Villa and out for a goal kick.
88' MASCHERANO GETS LUCKY
Another Celtic break sees Watt sprint up the pitch again, where Javier Mascherano tugs the forward back for what should have been a red card offence. Nothing given. Moments later Villa's snapshot from a corner brings a flying save from Forster.
85' BAD BOBBLE
As Villa prepares to shoot the ball bobbles up horribly to send the Spaniard's shot ballooning high into the stand. It's been that kind of day for Barcelona.
83' GOAL!!! CELTIC
Efe Ambrose gives away a foul in a dangerous position and Messi steps up to take it, but his curled effort is saved by Forster. A long ball up the pitch is then all it takes to set TONY WATT free, the youngster scampering through the middle to slot the ball past Valdes and into the net. Unbelievable.
82' NOT MUCH LEFT IN THE TANK
The crowd are urging the Celtic players on to give every last drop of energy in the pursuit of this result. Some of the figures in green and white are virtually on their knees, having chased the ball all game.
79' SUBSTITUTION
Biram Kayal comes on for the hard-working Samaras.
79' VILLA PUTS IT WIDE
A turn and lay-off from Xavi sees David Villa arrow a low drive a foot wide of the right-hand post.
77' NOBODY'S PERFECT
Some marvellous skill from Cesc Fabregas keeps the ball in play when it looks certain to bounce off the pitch, and the substitute rolls a short pass into the feet of Iniesta. The double World Cup winner takes aim with his left peg and gets it all wrong to slice horribly wide of the target.
74' ALVES FAKES IT
Dani Alves collapses to the turf clutching his face as Ledley snatches the ball away. Nobody is buying it, not even Alves' own teammates, who tell him to get up and get on with it.
72' SUBSTITUTION
Neil Lennon replaces Lustig with Scotland under-21 international Tony Watt.
71' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION
Tito Vilanova rings the changes, withdrawing Song and Bartra in favour of Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique.
70' GREAT SAVE
Forster pulls off an outstanding save to deny Messi, diving to his right ad extending an long left arm to touch what looked a certain goal around the post. Messi looks baffled by this turn of events.
68' SONG ON THIN ICE
Alex Song steams into the back of Joe Ledley and somehow escapes with only a stern talking-to from the ref.
65' YELLOW CARD
Jordi Alba becomes the first player to enter the ref's notebook, but nobody can work out why. It may have been a case of dissent.
64' SUBSTITUTION
The first change of the game sees David Villa replace Pedro.
64' SELFISH PLAY
Wanyama bursts down the right and shows a lack of composure to shoot into the side-netting from an impossible angle with Kris Commons screaming for a cutback.
63' BARTRA HESITATES
Charlie Mulgrew sends a free kick into the box, where Bartra put his foot on the ball then hesitates and almost allows Samaras to nick it away. In the end the young Spaniard recovers his senses to boot it clear.
60' DOUBLE SAVE
The home fans applaud Fraser Forster after the beleaguered stopper keeps out a headed effort from Alexis Sanchez, then gets up to push Alves' angled drive over the bar.
57' RARE EFFORT
Mikael Lustig manages to meet Mulgrew's deep cross with a header, but the effort lacks the power necessary to trouble Victor Valdes. At least Celtic made an inroad into the Barcelona half there.
56' MESSI SWERVES LUSTIG
Lionel Messi swerves inside Lustig to sting Forster's palms with a fierce drive from 18 yards out.
55' NICE POSITION
If the scorelines around Group G stay as they are now Celtic will be in a great position to progress; currently Benfica are drawing 0-0 with Spartak Moscow. That would put them three points clear of Spartak and five above Benfica.
53' TOP TACKLING
Adam Matthews pops up with a pair of terrific sliding challenges to relieve first Xavi and then Messi of the ball inside the Celtic box. If either of those tackles had been even slightly mistimed a penalty would have been the result.
51' SIDE-NETTING
Most of Barcelona's attacking intent is coming through Dani Alves down the right flank. This time the Brazilian sprints forward and crosses for Pedro, whose flicked header ends up in the side-netting.
48' ACCIDENTAL EFFORT
What was intended as a cross by Alves turns into a shot as it nicks off Adam Matthews' back, forcing Fraser Forster to adjust his footing and save at the near post.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway here at Celtic Park. As yet there have been no changes by either manager.
45' CELTIC HOLDING FIRM
How on earth are Celtic doing this? The Bhoys have had virtually zero possession, but just as they did in the Nou Camp they've taken the lead against Barcelona. The difference is that this time they're made it to the break with that scoreline intact. Victor Wanyama was the man who scored, thumping home a 21st-minute header from Charlie Mulgrew's corner to send the crowd into raptures. Celtic have threatened on just one other occasion when Miku's knockdown almost fell to Georgios Samaras, but it's the defending that's really caught the eye. Barcelona have been limited to a Lionel Messi curler that hit the bar, a Xavi shot over the top and a weak header from Alexis Sanchez. We may see David Villa and Cesc Fabregas introduced in the second half, and in the end Celtic will have to pull off a superhuman feat of reslience to get all three points. Let's see what happens.
45' HALF TIME CELTIC 1 BARCELONA 0
It's half time, and incredibly the scoreboard reads Celtic 1 Barcelona 0.
43' WHAT A DIVE
There's been a bit of playacting from Jordi Alba so far, the Spain wing-back having twice taken dodgy dives when near a Celtic player. The referee has awarded a free kick for neither but equally has not booked Alba.
40' LUCKY SAVE
Messi plays a sumptuous ball into the path of Alba, who slides a low return ball into the area for his colleague. Messi looks certain to score, but his poked effort hits the unwitting Forster on the arm and bounces away.
38' AERIAL THREAT
Mulgrew's cross is nodded down by Miku and nearly reaches the lurking Georgios Samaras, but Marc Bartra steps in to clear the danger.
36' OFF THE POST
Barcelona have hit the woodwork twice now; this time Sanchez rises to meet Dani Alves' deep cross to the back post and sees the effort trickle across the goalline to bounce tantalisingly off the base of the opposite stick.
33' SHODDY SHOOTING
Xavi is the latest Barca player to shoot over from the edge of the box. The Catalans' shooting has been wayward to say the least.
32' TONE SET
Already it's looking a bit like parking the bus, with the hosts camped inside their own half and Barcelona probing away in their patient style. This could be how it is for the next 60 minutes.
29' OFF THE BAR
Andres Iniesta feeds Messi, who shoots in a flash from 25 yards out, the shot cannoning off the bar with Forster leaping but looking beaten.
26' MESSI FORCED BACK
Lionel Messi makes a foray forward but comes up against a green and white wall. The little maestro is forced to turn back and lay it off to Dani Alves, whose shot from 20 yards is always rising over the bar.
24' ON A HIGH
Celtic Park is bouncing to the rafters as the fans let loose a tremendous display of joy. They'll be hoping oh so fervently that their heroes can hold on this time, after taking the lead at almost the same time as they did in the reverse fixture.
21' GOAL!!! CELTIC
Charlie Mulgrew's inswinging left-footed corner floats high above the box until it's met by the towering VICTOR WANYAMA, who leaves Alex Song trailing in his wake to hit the back of the net with a bullet of a header. Astonishing stuff from Glasgow Celtic.
20' POWERFUL RUNNING
Victor Wanyama strides forward with a lung-bursting run to reach the edge of the box before seeming to lose confidence and passing the ball out wide to Miku. The striker goes to hit Samaras with a cross but can't clear Jordi Alba.
17' TWISTER
Another well-timed interception from Lustig sees the full back twist his ankle and limp away. He seems to shake it off pretty quickly.
15' HARD WORK UNDONE
Mikael Lustig intercepts before a pass can reach Messi, only to give the ball away to Sanchez with a careless clearance. The Chilean instantly slips the ball right to Andres Iniesta, whose curler bounces off a defender's back and out for a corner.
12' PENALTY DENIED
The Spanish fans yell for a penalty as Alexis Sanchez goes down inside the area with Kelvin Wilson in close attendance. It looked soft, and the ref duly waves the protests away.
11' OFFSIDE TRAPPED
The visitors are playing a high line which Celtic are doing their best to exploit with some swift balls forward. So far both Samaras and Miku have been caught offside as a result.
8' WINNING COMBO
Messi and Sanchez looks to be the winning combination. This time the Argentine plays a smart one-two with his fellow forward and ghosts into the area to spank a drive over the crossbar. Can Celtic possibly keep players like these out?
6' BARCA THREATEN
Lionel Messi cuts inside and unleashes a swerving shot that takes a dangerous deflection off Alexis Sanchez's head. Fraser Forster reacts quickly to pluck the ball out of the air.
4' FINE START
Celtic have given a good account of themselves in the opening few minutes, Georgios Samaras winning a free kick off the clumsy Javier Mascherano. Nothing comes of it for the moment.
1' KICK OFF
The referee blows the whistle and we're underway here at Celtic Park. The Bhoys have really got their work cut out tonight.
0' LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED
The teamsheets are out, and Neil Lennon hasn't sprung any surprises in his selection. The fans might, however, be happy to see Gerard Pique, David Villa and Cesc Fabregas on the bench. Not that there are any slouches in the Barca side.
0' BARCELONA TEAM NEWS
Gerard Pique has recovered from a foot injury in time to take part, but fellow defenders Carles Puyol and Thiago miss out through injury, along with Adriano. Sergio Busquets is suspended.
0' CELTIC TEAM NEWS
James Forrest, Emilio Izaguirre, Thomas Rogne and Lassad are all out injured for the home side, while Gary Hooper is a major doubt. Izaguirre's calf problem, which could keep the Honduran out for six weeks, represents a major headache for Neil Lennon. Georgios Samaras should pass a fitness test to play.
0' ONE TO WATCH
Celtic captain Scott Brown has been playing with a hip problem all season and manager Neil Lennon has requested that the midfielder be left out of Scotland's impending friendly against Luxembourg so that he can get a bit of rest. The gaffer has desribed Brown as playing the ‘best football of his career' this season, a comment which few would dispute. The skipper's grit and determination will be vital if the Bhoys want to get anything out of this game.
0' BARCA ON FORM
Barcelona are enjoying a terrific start to the season even by their lofty standards, having won all three Champions League games and established a three-point lead over closest rivals Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Their most recent outing saw the Catalans dispatch Celta Vigo 3-1 with goals from David Villa, Jordi Alba and Adriano. Before the game Lionel Messi was presented with the golden boot award for last season's superhuman goalscoring exploits.
0' PRESSURE OFF HAPPY MIKU
On-loan striker Miku has expressed his delight at finally scoring his first goal for Celtic in Sunday's 2-2 Scottish Premier League draw with Dundee United. The Venezuelan international said: “I was so happy to score and I am now free of that pressure. Everybody wants to get a goal and see if you are a good player. So I was very excited to get my first goal. Every game I play, I felt I was playing better. I knew the goal was coming and I am so happy now”.
0' CELTIC V BARCELONA
Celtic can feel proud that this evening's Champions League Group G visit of Barcelona is not being dismissed as an easy three points for a team many have called the greatest of all time. The Bhoys were desperately unlucky in October's clash with Tito Vilanova's side in Spain, holding Messi et al to a draw right up until the very last minute when they were finally undone to lose 2-1. The performance drew respect from around Europe and proved that this Celtic team can cut it on the big stage. Add to that the fact that they now occupy second place in the group, and the importance of this game becomes clear. Let's see what they can do at Celtic Park tonight.
