Benfica vs. Celtic
Minute Commentary
90' BENFICA 2 CELTIC 1
No luck for Celtic as they were comprehensively outplayed by their Portuguese opponents. Benfica had their defence breached for the first time in six games, but a second half onslaught finally yielded reward against a side who, in truth, never reached the heights they achieved against Barcelona two weeks ago. Ola John opened the scoring on seven minutes with a bobbling strike from twelve yards after Eduardo Salvio jinked past some careless Bhoys defending. The Scottish champions took their only real chance of the first period to draw level. An unmarked Georgios Samaras rose at the back post to nod into an empty net with Artur Moraes flapping. The hosts always looked the better side though, never more so than at the opening of the second half when a constant barrage of pressure saw Lima, Luisao and a very profligate Oscar Cardozo continually fail to put the game to bed. Speed, skill and imagination were the hallmarks of a midfield performance that was too much for an under-par Celtic side. Their goal lived a charmed life before Lorenzo Melgarejo met a Cardozo knock-down to beat Fraser Forster with ease and from then on the result was never in doubt. Neil Lennon's men now head to Spartak Moscow, who have nothing to play for, in need of at least a point depending upon how Benfica fair in Barcelona, who are already through. You'd fancy Celtic to qualify, but not if they perform like this again.
90' FULL TIME
A chance wasted for the visitors as Biram Kayal can't keep a half volley down when well placed. That's it. Benfica have kept their hopes alive with fine home performance.
90' TIME IS RUNNING OUT
Fraser Forster is the hero as Cardozo once again bamboozles the Celtic defence and powers in a strike that the goalkeeper did brilliantly to keep out. It's looking like the writing may be on the wall now.
87' NIP AND TUCK
Victor Wanyama picks up a yellow card that will rule him out of Celtic's final game against Spartak. Salvio is continuing to terrorise their defence with more and more Hoops remaining upfield desperate for a chance.
84' WINDING DOWN
Celtic are suddenly occupying the ball more. You feel they'll get a couple of opportunities to equalise in this final six minutes. The home side still carry a threat but it's the away fans who are in full voice in support of their men.
80' WATT CAN THE HOOPS DO?
Here comes Tony Watt for Celtic. Joe Ledley departs and Neil Lennon has played all his cards. Can they find an equaliser? Not when Oscar Cardozo is belting 35 yard free kicks just over they can't.
77' HOME CHANGE
Benfica have recinded on an attacking substitution they were planning and may be tempted to hang on as Maxi Pereira arrives in place of Nemanja Matic. The game has changed as Celtic throw caution to the wind.
74' END TO END
So Celtic must respond if they're to clinch things tonight and Victor Wanyama immediately attempts to do so, but then Enzo Perez is straight back up the other end to smash one just wide. We could be in for a fine finish here at the Estadio De La Luz.
72' BENFICA LEAD
Garay met a looping knock down from a free kick out on the right and beat Fraser Forster first time from six yards. It's been coming for the hosts. They take an absolutely warranted lead.
70' GOOOAAALLL!!!
There it is! Ezequiel Garay! Finally!
70' CARDOZ NO
How close do they need to be?! This time four yards is too far for Oscar Cardozo as Salvio whips in yet another cross that's begging to be converted.
68' SPURNING DOWN THE HOUSE
Lima forces Fraser Forster into a routine stop with a long-range strike and then Oscar Cardozo narrowly misses a dangerous cross. The 5,000 travelling Scots will surely be living in hope that this many chances wasted often add up to heartbreak for the dominant side.
66' HOME DOMINANCE
Commons first touch is a corner ball that Artur Moraes is forced to punch away on the penalty spot. Celtic have done little wrong in the second half, they've simply been overwhelmed by a fine attacking display from a sharp and committed Benfica side.
63' COMMONS SENSE
Kris Commons replaces Scott Brown in midfield for Celtic. Brown has only just returned so Neil Lennon no doubt feels fresh legs might help them gain a foothold in the game.
59' WASTEFUL HOSTS
Luisao is the latest Benfica player to join in the shooting practice without success. So far they'll all be staying back and running laps, as it could be all over if they had their shooting boots on. Surely they can't spurn too many more of these.
56' NERVOUS TIMES IN SCOTLAND
The home onslaught continues as Enzo Perez thumps a shot over on the edge of the area from a corner. It should be mentioned that Biram Kayal came on for an unwell Charlie Mulgrew at half time for Celtic.
53' SO CLOSE FOR BENFICA
Lima skips inside with great feet and lashes a shot against Adam Matthews on the goal line before Oscar Cardozo is only just beaten to a cross six yards out by Mikael Lustig. Benfica were very, very close to taking the lead again there. They've come out with a spring in their step.
50' SAME AGAIN
Immediately Benfica pin Celtic back in their own half once more. Eduardo Salvio has impressed on the right tonight and he whips a cross in that Kelvin Wilson has to turn behind. The resultant corner is cleared by Efe Ambrose.
48' ON A KNIFE EDGE
So Celtic are 45 minutes from the knock-out stages of this year's Champion's League. Can they hold on or will their Portuguese opponents force them to get something out of their remaining home tie with Spartak Moscow? Benfica would then face the tricky task of producing the goods against Barcelona.
46' THE SECOND HALF BEGINS
We're underway once more here in Portugal.
45' APPROACHING HALF TIME
It's probably a fair scoreline as we approach half-time, though Benfica look good in possession and have fired a number of errant long-range shots in. Nemanja Matic is the latest to have a go on the volley following a shot by Ola John at the back post that was charged down.
42' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Celtic threaten on the break again and a near post header from Gary Hooper is deflected out for a corner which Charlie Mulgrew can't beat the first man with. Lima then surges into the area and his shot is blocked.
40' CATS AND DOGS
The travelling fans will recognise tonight's weather from 90% of days in Glasgow. It's absolutely bucketing down and I can't see too much free-flowing football being attempted as the game progresses. Mistakes will no doubt creep in though.
37' LEAKY BENFICA
So Celtic respond with pretty much their first attempt on goal and if Benfica continue to defend set pieces in that manner they will pay for it again. This scoreline would be enough to see the Scots through but there's a long way to go yet.
32' GOOOAAALLL!!!
A Celtic corner is planted home by Georgios Samaras! We're all square in Portugal! The Greek was completely unmarked at the back post as he headed it down into an unguarded goal.
32' CARDOZO THREATENS AGAIN
Oscar Cardozo gets through on the left of the penalty area and he lashes a shot just wide. Celtic had plenty of men there but Cardozo eluded them and wasted a great opportunity.
30' EXCHANGING ATTACKS
Celtic's first meaningful foray forward sees Wanyama and Joe Ledley influential but it comes to nothing. Then Lorenzo Melgarejo reaches the byline without support from his teammates.
27' A BIT OF LIP
The referee is short on sympathy for Enzo Perez as he runs into the imposing figure of Victor Wanyama, but the winger's bloody lip is testament to a very Scottish approach to defence there.
25' SCOTS IN POSITION
Celtic are being forced fairly deep as Benfica control possession but it's been a disciplined performance from Neil Lennon's side since the goal. They're looking to release Hooper Samaras on the break.
21' EVEN STEVENS
Great feet from Eduardo Salvio down the right for Benfica. He, Lima and Ola John all look pacy and attack-minded, much like their opponents. Two well matched sides are duking it out in midfield.
19' HOOPER AWAY
Gary Hooper is wrongfully ruled offside as he beat the trap in an inviting position. Cruel on the visitors as the game begins to open up a little.
17' MEN BEHIND THE BALL
Celtic had 28% of possession in their heroic victory against Barca last time out so they will be no strangers to mounting a rearguard but Benfica's early strike will force them to chase the game a little now. Benfica still look the more comfortable on the ball without chances at either end.
13' HOPEFUL HOOPS
Celtic have lofted a number of balls hopefully forward so far and Benfica will no doubt feel fortunate to have big Luisao back in their side as so far the tactic has only served to gift the home side possession.
7' AN EARLY OPENER
Sloppy work from the Hoops back line as they allow Benfica to reach the byline and as the ball bobbles to Ola John he hacks it through Mikael Lustig's legs from twelve yards which completely unsights Fraser Forster.
7' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ola John opens the scoring for Benfica!
5' SPARE PLACES
There are a surprising number of empty seats here tonight considering the gravity of the encounter. Benfica have started the more lively, roared on by a noisy crowd nonetheless.
3' CARDOZOOOOH
Georgios Samaras loses out to Oscar Cardozo in the middle and he lets fly from forty yards. The shot whistles only narrowly over Fraser Forster's crossbar.
1' KICK OFF
Benfica get the game underway in their home red and white and Celtic in a change black strip.
0' TEAM NEWS
Joe Ledley, Gary Hooper and captain Scott Brown all overcome doubtful status to make it into a strong Celtic line-up. The hosts also welcome back their captain in the shape of Luisao who is available after a suspension. I've got a feeling we're in for a great game tonight.
0' HERE WE GO
Welcome to Portugal for tonight's crucial Champion's League encounter. Barcelona dispatched Spartak Moscow earlier to progress so this is pretty much a straight shoot-out for the second qualifying spot, though Celtic have the luxury of being able to settle for a draw. The sides line up as follows... Benfica: Artur Moraes, Almeida, Luisao, Garay, Melgarejo, John, Matic, Lima, Perez, Cardozo, Salvio. Subs: Paulo Lopes, Bruno Cesar, Nolito, Maxi Pereira, Rodrigo, Gaitan, Jardel. Celtic: Forster, Lustig, Wilson, Ambrose, Matthews, Brown, Ledley, Wanyama, Mulgrew, Samaras, Hooper. Subs: Zaluska, Miku, Nouioui, Commons, McCourt, Watt, Kayal.
0' THE STATE OF PLAY
The Scotsmen's heroic victory over Barcelona two weeks ago has put them in pole position to qualify, though no side in the group in is by any means out of the running for the knockout stages. Barcelona top the table with 9 points, followed by Celtic on 7, Benfica with 4 and finally Spartak Moscow with 1. A win for Celtic means they will advance, most likely with the Spanish giants, assuming they overcome Spartak. However, defeat for Neil Lennon's side would mean they would need to produce the goods against the Russians at Celtic Park in two weeks time. The two sides played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw in their opening group game back in September. A repeat of that would also take the Scottish champions through.
0' FORM AND INJURY NEWS
Benfica remain undefeated in their domestic league and have won all of their last five games in all competitions without conceding a goal. They welcome back experienced defender Luisao from suspension, and midfielder Nemanja Matic, who missed their 2-0 victory over Spartak last time out in the Champion's League. Celtic top the Scottish Premier League by a point and are also undefeated in five games, though score draws against unfancied opposition in the league straddled that astonishing victory against the Catalans. Celtic Neil Lennon has been evasive about his team news, confirming that only two of trio Scott Brown, Joe Ledley and Gary Hooper will be fit, but refusing to reveal who is doubtful. Giorgios Samaras, Kris Commons and Miku have all made the squad but Emilio Iziguirre, Thomas Rogne and James Forrest are still sidelined. Ahead of the game Lennon said: "Benfica are a formidable team at home and their domestic form is excellent, and they, like ourselves, go into the game on the back of a very good win...In the corresponding fixture 10 of our players made their Champions League debut so they have done very well...I am not going to set the team up defensively or play for a draw, we will try to play as we always do, to try to win the game and we will see what that brings."
0' PREVIEW: BENFICA VS. CELTIC
A huge game for a pair of clubs with a rich and interesting history in European football. Celtic revisit the scene of arguably their greatest ever triumph, 1967's European Cup triumph, when they overcame huge odds to beat Inter Milan, a side previously beaten only once in three seasons of European competition. Two years later, they returned to face Eusebio's legendary Benfica side following a 3-0 first leg home victory. In a match played in torrential rain, the Portuguese side scored with the last kick of the game, though the Scots were convinced that the referee was simply blowing for full time. A celebratory pitch invasion preceded extra time which yielded no goal's and this prompted one of the last ever incidences of a match being settled via the toss of a coin. However, the indignant Dutch referee flouted convention and elected not to perform it in the centre circle as normal. All three officials and both captains and manager therefore squashed into the referees' room to do it. The ref pointed at Celtic captain Billy MacNeill and he looked nervously at manager Jock Stein, who said 'You're on your own'. MacNeill picked heads and Celtic won the toss. As he celebrated the Dutchman then informed him that that was simply the toss to determine which player would toss the coin! Suffice to say, McNeill picked right again and the hoops went through. Bizarrely, it was Celtic who protested and penalties were soon introduced.
