Bayern München vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' AGONY FOR ARSENAL
England won't have a team in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 17 years. Arsenal gave it their best shot and recorded a senational 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena, but it was Bayerm Munich who progressed on the away goals rule courtesy of their 3-1 victory in London. Arsene Wenger's men took the lead in the third minute thanks to a strike from Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman scored his 15th goal of the season and arguably his most important as he slotted the ball into the roof of the net from Theo Walcott's vicious right-wing cross to stun the home side. Jupp Heynckes' team looked comfortable in the second period but with five minutes remaining Laurent Koscielny headed home Santi Cazorla's corner kick, but it proved to be in vein as the four-time winners edged through.
90' FULL-TIME
Bayern Munich progress through to the UEFA Champions League after going through on the away goals rule. They lose 2-0 on the night to Arsenal, but progress thanks to their 3-1 away win.
90' BAYERN POSSESSION
Bayern Munich are trying to keep their heads as Arjen Robben keeps the ball down in the Arsenal half. Arsene Wenger is standing on the edge of his technical area.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be THREE added minutes of stppage time at the Allianz Arena.
88' FREE-KICK
Mario Gomez is shown a yellow card for a foul but Mikel Arteta's delivery is just beyond the reach of Per Mertesacker.
86' ONE MORE GOAL!!!
And they do get another goal back as Santi Cazorla's outswinging corner is headed into the back of the net by the towering Laurent Koscielny. The French defender is then booked after a scuffle in the goalmouth. Arsenal now only need one more goal to go through, but the clock is ticking.
85' GOOOAAALLL!!!
LAURENT KOSCIELNY
85' CLOCK TICKING
Time is running out for Arsenal, who need to get the ball forward and start throwing bodies into the Bayern box.
84' GOOD STOP
Lukasz Fabianski makes another fine stop to deny Thomas Muller from close-range. Javi Martinez is then shown a yellow card for a high challenge on Tomas Rosicky and moments later Santi Cazorla is booked for bringing down Daniel Van Buyten.
81' MERTESACKER CARDED
Per Mertesacker is booked for blocking off Arjen Robben. Bayern then make their second change of the match as Anatoliy Tymoshchuk replaces Toni Kroos.
79' AGONISINGLY WIDE
Gervinho plays a lovely one-two with Santi Cazorla before sending his left-foot shot inches wide of the far post. The ball actually trickles its way past Manuel Neuer. How unlucky!
77' GIROUD SLIP
Olivier Giroud finds space in the area, but instead of taking a swing at the ball with his left-foot he looks instead for Santi Cazorla and slips.
75' ARJEN PAIN
Arjen Robben cuts on the outside to his favourite left-foot, but sees his curler fly over the crossbar much to the disappointment of the home fans.
74' SILLY BOOKING
Olivier Giroud smashes the ball against the advertising hoardings and referee Pavel Kralovec has no option but to book the Frenchman.
73' SUBSTITUTIONS
Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replace Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott for Arsenal. Bayern respond and send on Mario Gomez for Mario Mandzukic.
71' GERMAN STORM
From the resulting corner Arsenal defenders throw their bodies at the ball to prevent Bayern from scoring an equaliser. It seems the visitors have weathered the latest German storm.
69' BRILLIANT SAVE
Lukasz Fabianski stays on his feet to deny Arjen Robben in a one-on-one situation after the Dutchman is put clean through by a lovely backheel pass from Thomas Muller.
67' GOOD POSSESSION
Arjen Robben's cross is cleared by Per Mertesacker, but the men in all-red are keeping possession of the ball much better than in the first-half.
65' SO CLOSE
Philipp Lahm finds Luiz Gustavo in space on the edge of the box but his left-foot curler misses the near post by inches.
64' ROSICKY CARDED
Tomas Rosicky goes into the book for a poor a sliding challenge on the flying Arjen Robben.
63' POOR EFFORT
Santi Cazorla can only strike the ball halfway up the wall and at the other end a quick throw sets Thomas Muller away, but his effort from a narrow angle is weak.
61' CHEAP FREE-KICK
Luiz Gustavo catches Tomas Rosicky as the Czech star looks to turn away and this free-kick is about 25 yards out to the right.
59' LAHM INTO THE BOOK
Bayern full-back Philipp Lahm goes into referee Pavel Kralovec's book after a late sliding tackle on Santi Cazorla. Moments later, Thomas Muller's shot is comfortable for Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
57' TIGHT DECISION
Bayern get lucky as Olivier Giroud's through ball finds Theo Walcott, who is flagged offside by the linesman. However, it seems as though he might have just been level when the ball was played.
55' AMBITIOUS SHOT
Laurent Koscielny kicks Mario Mandzukic in the arm and the striker earns his side the free-kick. Bayern lose the ball though and Olivier Giroud decides to go for goal with an ambitious 30-yard shot which flies well over.
53' DOUBLE FRUSTRATION
Arjen Robben takes the shot on from the resulting corner, but it was never going to trouble Lukasz Fabianski. Mario Mandzukic and Javi Martinez are frustrated that the Dutchman didn't pass one of them the ball.
51' OUT OF THE TRAPS
Jupp Heynckes has obviously had some harsh words to say to his side because they've come bolting out of the traps in this second period as Laurent Koscielny slides in the clear the ball away for another corner.
49' SHOT ON SIGHT
Arjen Robben's early strike takes a slight deflection off Mikel Arteta and out for a corner kick. They keep the pressure on and Toni Kroos' right-foot piledriver flies just wide of Lukasz Fabianski's near post.
46' UNDERWAY AGAIN
Here we go in this second half then. Arsenal have only kept one clean sheet in their last 23 Champions League games away from home while Bayern Munich have scored in each of their last 13 games in the competition - the last team to stop them from netting being Basel in February 2012. Whatever happens, Arsene Wenger knows his side have to step it up and score early again to have any chance of making the 'impossible possible'.
45' DREAM STILL ALIVE
Arsenal's dreams of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League are still alive thanks to a third-minute strike from Olivier Giroud at the Allianz Arena. The Frenchman scored his 15th goal of the season and arguably his most important as he slotted the ball into the roof of the net from Theo Walcott's vicious right-wing cross to stun the home side. Jupp Heynckes' side still lead 3-2 on aggregate and the Gunners still need another two goals to progress. A 3-1 result in Arsenal's favour would send the tie into extra-time, so we should be in for a rip-roaring second half.
45' HALF-TIME
Bayern Munich are a goal down to Arsenal at the Allianz Arena but they still lead 3-2 on aggregate.
45' GIBBS BOOKED
Kieran Gibbs is shown a yellow card by referee Pavel Kralovec for sliding through Arjen Robben.
44' POOR PASSING
Tomas Rosicky's touch is awful and moments later Dante's pass goes to nobody. It's catchy! Both teams seem to be happy to play this out until half-time.
42' OLIVIER BACK ON
The goalscorer Olivier Giroud hobbles off the park as play gets back underway again. The Frenchman was holding his left knee, but he seems to be ok as he comes back on.
40' GIROUD INJURED
Per Mertesacker slides in ahead of Thomas Muller and now Kieran Gibbs takes on Philipp Lahm, but the German full-back slides in to concede a throw. Arsenal keep possession until the ball is played into Olivier Giroud, who turns awkwardly and goes down in agony.
36' TACTICAL GAME
The ball is coming back Arsenal's way as the Germans pump up the pressure, but Arsene Wenger's men are pressing higher up the pitch, which are the right tactics.
34' DANGEROUS THEO
Santi Cazorla finds Theo Walcott in space down the right again and he delivers another wonderful daisy-cutter of a cross which Olivier Giroud is unable to get onto this time.
32' SIDE NETTING
Per Mertesacker's poor clearance in his own area falls to Thomas Muller whose powerful shot hits the side netting. The midfielder claims a corner, but referee Pavel Kralovec points for a goal-kick.
31' SHOT WIDE
Arjen Robben glides past Theo Walcott this time before thumping his left-foot shot wide of the far post, although Lukasz Fabianski seemed to have it covered.
29' SUPERB DEFENDING
Arjen Robben breaks away and tries to use his tremendous pace to get past Carl Jenkinson, but the Gunners' full-back does superbly to shepherd him off the ball before clearing his lines.
26' GOOD SAVE
Philipp Lahm picks out Toni Kroos on the edge of the area, but he stubs the ball into the ground and that allows Lukasz Fabianski to make a comfortable save.
25' POOR EFFORT
Arjen Robben plays the ball wide for Javi Martinez, but his shot is still rising over the crossbar.
21' MUNICH FRUSTRATION
The Bayern Munich players are frustrated and annoyed that things are not going their way. David Alaba's left-wing cross is well held by Lukasz Fabianski.
19' MULLER ANNOYED
Thomas Muller is annoyed with the lineman as he feels his side should have had a corner, but the ball deflected off him as he challenged Laurent Koscielny.
18' GUNNERS POSSESSION
Lukasz Fabianski comes and takes charge of the situation as he's challenged by the tall Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic. Tomas Rosicky earns his side a free-kick on halfway and now Arsenal happily keep possession at the back.
16' SLIPPERY CONDITIONS
The home crowd are urging their team to pick up the pace, but many players are struggling to stay on their feet in these slippery conditions. Philipp Lahm's shot is blocked and then Tomas Rosicky's pass out of play to Theo Walcott is poor.
13' WASTEFUL FREE-KICK
At the other end Arsenal win a free-kick about 35 yards from goal. The ball from Santi Cazorla is lifted into Per Mertesacker, but although it bisects the backline, it runs straight through for a goal-kick.
10' BAYERN CORNER
Thomas Muller collects David Alaba's pass and earns his side the first corner of the game. The ball is played to the back stick where Luiz Gustavo hammers his wild effort over the crossbar.
8' BAYERN STUNNED
Bayern have only lost nine times in 82 Champions League home matches, and never by more than 2-0, but Arsenal are already a goal up inside the opening five minutes. Arsene Wenger's side have lit the blue touch paper at the Allianz Arena, but they still need another TWO goals to progress tonight and hope the hosts don't score. Of course a 3-1 scoreline would take the tie to extra-time, but there is still a long way to go yet!
5' WHAT A START!!!
Olivier Giroud scores his 15th goal of the season and arguably his most important. The striker is on the end of Theo Walcott's vicious right-wing cross to slot the ball into the roof of the net and stun the home side.
4' GOOOAAALLL!!!
OLIVIER GIROUD
3' SAME SYSTEMS
Both sides have set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but all the onus is going to be on the Gunners to attack as they look to pull-off a miracle. You feel they have GOT to score the first goal of the game tonight, otherwise it'll be 'Auf Wiedersehen' to the Wenger boys!!! The flag goes up on the far side against Thomas Muller as Arsenal look to hold a very high line.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then at the magnificent Allianz Arena then. Bayern Munich are wearing their traditional all-red kit, while Arsenal are in their striking blue and black hooped away strip tonight. The pitch is in superb condition and the 75,000 plus crowd are in full voice, despite the temperature around the minus two mark. The 3,500 visiting fans are enjoying the atmosphere though, so can the Gunners make the impossible possible? These two clubs have met five times in the Champions League, with the Bavarians winning three times, Arsenal once and the other one ending in a draw.
0' BAYERN TEAM NEWS
Jupp Heynckes has made a couple of changes as expected with Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger missing out through injury and suspension respectively. They are replaced by Luiz Gustavo and Arjen Robben, who has receovered from a calf problem. Luiz Gustavo starts in midfield while Dante comes in alongside Daniel van Buyten in defence.
0' ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
If Arsenal are to spring a surprise, they will have to do it without the injured Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna and Lukas Podolski, while Wojciech Szczesny has been rested. But despite reports to the contrary Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker all start. Lukasz Fabianski starts in goal for the first time since February 2012 while Kieran Gibbs returns after six weeks out with a thigh injury, and replaces the ineligible Nacho Monreal. Skipper Thomas Vermaelen is left on the bench as Laurent Koscielny comes in at centre back while Tomas Rosicky comes in for Wilshere.

0' MATCH PREVIEW
Bayern Munich are on the verge of a UEFA Champions League quarter-final spot for the fourth time in five years as Arsenal face elimination for a third successive season at this stage. The runaway Bundesliga leaders could be forgiven for thinking the hard work had been done after delivering a European masterclass with a 3-1 win in London a fortnight ago. It does look like mission impossible for the Gunners who have never overturned a home first-leg defeat in European competition. Jupp Heynckes' team have won seven of their last eight matches on home soil, and are favourites to make it through. With Arsenal facing an uphill battle to make it back into the top four of the Barclays Premier League after defeat at rivals Tottenham, tonight could be their last elite European fixture for some time. Arsene Wenger must come up with a plan of attack to try to turn the tie around and the fact Arsenal almost overturned a 4-0 first leg deficit against AC Milan last season should hand them some belief going into the clash.
0' HEYNCKES WARNING
Before last season's final defeat to Chelsea the Germans had lost just once at home in Europe to English opposition - in the 1993 UEFA Cup against Norwich, when Jeremy Goss became the Canary who knocked Bayern off their perch. And Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes maintains his side cannot switch off against Arsenal - even though they already have one foot in the quarter-finals. He warned: "Last year Arsenal lost 4-0 (away to AC Milan), then in the second leg they won 3-0 - they could have won 4-0, they had he chances, so it shows they are a strong team and capable of making up the gap if they have to. I respect Arsene Wenger very much. He is a top manager and Arsenal are a fighting team. They will do everything to get a result here, so we must be on our guard."
0' EARLY BAYERN TEAM NEWS
Franck Ribery has been ruled out with an ankle injury. The France forward suffered a ligament strain in his left ankle during his side's 3-2 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday. Holger Badstuber is also out while midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and defender Jerome Boateng, who are banned, will also miss the match at the Allianz Arena. Bayern are also sweating on the fitness of Arjen Robben, who was not involved at the weekend because of a calf problem. The German giants have plenty of strength in depth, though, with the likes of Luiz Gustavo and Xherdan Shaqiri ready to come in. Dante is expected to play alongside Daniel van Buyten in defence.
0' WENGER BELIEVES
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will have to make the 'impossible possible' to stay in the competition. "The chance is small," said the Frenchman, "but the chance makes the impossible possible. That would be a great credit for our team if we do it. We have to try to achieve it."
0' EARLY ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been ruled out for up to four weeks with an ankle injury, while former Bayern striker Lukas Podolski is also out with a similar if less serious problem. Tomas Rosicky will return in midfield, while Olivier Giroud is expected to start. With Nacho Monreal cup-tied, Thomas Vermaelen could shift to left-back with Laurent Koscielny playing centre-half. Goalkeeper Wojciech Tomasz Szczesny will be rested.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS

His assistants are Roman Slyako from Slovakia and Martin Wilczek while the additional assistant referees are Radek Prihoda and Michal Patak.
