FC Copenhagen vs. Juventus
Minute Commentary
Even though they took the lead and were the home team, there is no doubt that FC Copenhagen will be the happier of the two sides as the spoils are shared in an eventful game in Group B. The hosts had the better of the opening quarter of an hour and reaped their reward with a close-range finish from Nicolai Jorgensen from a set piece. The remainder of the first period was played in Copenhagen's half though, and it was a miracle that it stayed 1-0 going into half time with Tevez, Chiellini and Pogba guilty of poor finishing. It didn't take long for the Old Lady to get back on level terms after interval though, as Fabio Quagliarella's no nonsense finish evened up the score at 1-1. It was all Juventus from then on in, with Carlos Tevez denied twice by the brilliance of Johan Wiland, and Quagliarella hitting the bar with a fine header. Stale Solbakken's men hung on however, and Antonio Conte might just be a tad worried as games against Galatasaray and Real Madrid loom on the horizon. A good night for Copenhagen fans though, and Johan Wiland might just wake up tomorrow morning to find himself the toast of Denmark.
That's it - the full time whislte blows and FC Copenhagen have scrapped their way to a point against a wasteful Juventus side. 1-1 the full time score at the Parken Stadium.
Carlos Tevez has what must be the final opportunity of the game, and it isn't a bad one either. Once more he rushes to the near post to meet a low cross from Mauricio Isla, but his shot with the outside of his left foot is tame, and Johan Wiland can grasp the ball. Seconds remain.
There will be three minutes of stoppage time at the Parken Stadium - it will feel like a lifetime for Copenhagen fans you would imagine, but they are edging closer and closer to a draw against one of Europe's powerhouses.
For all of their dominance it is looking like being one of those evenings for Antonio Conte's side. They are giving the ball to Pirlo at every given opportunity, but the Italian midfielder is struggling to find that killer pass to open up the Copenhagen defence. However this one ends up, you have to take your hat off to the home team - their desire and work-rate has been first class.
Claudemir is withdrawn for the Danish outfit, with Georg Margreitter coming on in his place. Four minutes remain, with the hosts fighting tooth and nail to hang on to their point.
What a substitution that could have proved to be! Pirlo releases Giovinvo into the area, and when the little Italian striker gets going, Usain Bolt would struggle to catch him. He sprints past the Copenhagen defenders, but Johan Wiland once more comes out on top in a one-on-one situation. Goalkeeping scouts take note.
Copenhagen make a second substitution with just under ten minutes left on the clock - Youssef Toutouh (no relation to Archbishop Desmond) is on for Christian Bolanos, while Sebastian Giovinco comes on for the visitors.
He's worked hard, but in truth it doesn't look like Carlos Tevez is destined to score tonight - the former City and Utd man arrives at the near post, but he can't convert the low cross, with Wiland again in fine fettle.
Juventus go from one end to the other in double quick time, like a Bentley cruising smoothly through the gears. Quagliarella neatly heads the ball down for Arturo Vidal, who looks favourite to put Juve ahead, but once more the legs of Johan Wiland frustrate the Italian team. Just under fifteen minutes remain at the Parken Stadium.
For the first 25 minutes of this half it was all Juventus, but that substitution from Stale Solbakken has really settled things down for the hosts. The are maintaining possession better, and are stopping their opponents' attacks at source. They are the better team at present.
Copenhagen are inches away from taking the lead! Nicolai Jorgensen goes on an intelligent weaving run before unleashing from 30 yards out. Gianluigi Buffon is beaten all ends up, but the ball flies narrowly over the top of the bar. That was a heart stopping moment for Juventus - Copenhagen are still alive and kicking in this one.
It is the home team who make the first change of the game, as Rurik Gislason comes on for the industrious Fanendo Adi. Can that make the difference for Stale Solbakken's side?
The visitors are unlucky not to be ahead as Quagliarella jumps like a salmon to meet a cross from the right-hand side, but the ball skims the top of the bar and goes behind for a goal kick. The state of play is pretty clear - FC Copenhagen are holding on for a point, but Juve can smell blood and are doing everything in their power to try and win the game.
Nicloai Jorgensen puts in the sort of tackle that spilts opinion worldwide. He goes in two-footed, but clearly gets all of the ball and none of the man. Giorgio Chiellini starts rolling around like he has been shot, but the referee simply waves play on. Replays show it was probably the correct decision.
The yellow shirts continue to pour forward as Copenhagen are forced to defend, defend and defend some more. Andrea Pirlo's daisy-cutter from range is well stopped by Wiland, with Stephan Lichsteiner trying to force the ball back across goal from the byline, but Pogba can't turn the ball towards goal and the danger momentarily disappears.
This is not going to be a comfortable last half hour for Copenhagen fans you would imagine. Juventus continue to dominate, and Peluso is again involved in a good chance, as his cross finds Lichsteiner at the back post. Once more, though, the defender's effort is below par, and 1-1 it remains. For how long though?
You can't say it hasn't been coming - Fabio Quagliarella gets the visitors back on level terms with a textbook goal that looks like it has come straight off the training ground. Federico Peluso picks the ball up on the left and drills in a low cross - Pirlo dummies it and Quagliarella emphatically powers the ball past Wiland and into the roof of the net.
Fabio Quagliarella has restored parity for Juventus! 1-1 at the Parken Stadium!
It is Johan Wiland to the rescue again for the hosts! Andrea Pirlo does what he does best, floating a gorgeous ball over the top for Carlos Tevez to run on to. The Copenhagen defence is well and truly split, but Wiland spreads himself to deny the Argentine forward's first time effort.
Fanendo Adi and Nicolai Jorgensen have worked extremely hard up top for Copenhagen, but you sense that they aren't going to see too much of the ball for the remainder of this clash - it could be a frustrating second half for them, and a long 45 minutes for the home fans.
You would have thought the Juve players would have come out with rockets up their respective backsides, but they have looked pretty flat since the start of this half, with Olof Mellberg and Ragnar Sigurdsson easily marshalling their front line. With Real Madrid and Galatasaray being the other teams in this group, this is not a game the Italian side can afford to lose you would think.
Juventus get us back under way at the Parken Stadium - they have 45 minutes to get themselves back into this one.
This match was hardly going to be a David vs Goliath affair, as they both belong to Europe's elite group of football teams, but it was clear who the favourites were at the Parken Stadium tonight. But at half time it is the underdogs who lead through a deserved goal after fourteen minutes from Nicolai Jorgensen. It was sloppy defending from Juve, but the hosts were the better side for the first 15 minutes. After that goal, though, Antonio Conte's men responded well, and should have equalised three times over through Carlos Tevez, Paul Pogba and Giorgio Chiellini. Andrea Pirlo looked to be the main threat for the visitors with his dangerous balls in, but a combination of resolute defending and fortune saw the Danish side through to half time. Can they hold on for another 45 minutes? Join us here in a couple of minutes to find out.
The half time whistle blows, and the majority of the Parken Stadium can relax for 15 minutes as Copenhagen take their one-goal advantage into the interval.
Angelo Ogbonna, who was partially at fault for the goal, tries to redeem himself up at the other end, but he can't convert Pirlo's near post delivery, skewing his volley wide of the target.
It looks like Stale Solbakken's men have no grand ambitions to notch a second before the break, as they are just content to keep the ball in the opposing half with two minutes remaining until the interval. They have rode their luck, but the home fans will be happy with their side's endeavours in this first half.
The Danish outfit will be depserate to get into half time at 1-0 here. With five minutes of the first half remaining, Juventus fail to make the most of another great chance. A cross from the left-hand side finds its way to the back stick for the waiting Lichsteiner, but the full-back gets his attempt all wrong, blasting the ball into the turf and away to safety.
The anger is starting to boil over for the Serie A side at present - Carlos Tevez waits too long to release Vidal on the outside right, and the offside flag goes up to quell another attack. Vidal and Tevez have a bit of afters, symoblising the frustration that the visitors are feeling at the moment.
As all good teams do, Copenhagen are defending in two lines of four whenever Juve get into their half, and that is forcing the Italian giants to go wide. They do so again here, and Pirlo's cross is headed over the bar by Pogba. It has been a frustrating first 35 minutes for Juve.
There looks to be no outlet for the hosts at the moment, which means as soon as they clear the ball it is coming straight back at them. Disciplined defending from Ragnar Sigurdsson stops an impressive run from Vidal, but it is another corner for Juve. They are starting to add up now.
It is still the visitors who are dominating proceedings, but Copenhagen are keeping their strikers quiet for the time being. As half time gets closer and closer, Antonio Conte will become more and more ruffled.
After that flurry of activity in front of their goal, Copenhagen buy themselves some time by forcing a corner after good work from Adi and Daniel Braaten. It looks a matter of time before Antonio Conte's men find the equaliser, though.
We are barely twenty minutes in, and I am scratching my head already - how are Juventus not level? First, Arturo Vidal curls in a wicked ball that finds Giorgio Chiellini unmarked at the back post, but the latter's header is somehow tipped over by Wiland. Moments after, a brilliant corner from Pirlo finds Paul Pogba just two yards from goal, but the former Man Utd midfielder rashly blasts his volley over the bar. Someone call 999 - Copenhagen have just got out of jail!
The visitors respond to that goal in a manner befitting of their lofty status in European football - they go straight up the other end and come desperately close to equalising. Carlos Tevez is found running into the box, and when he receives the ball he powers a drive towards goal. Johan Wiland parries it back out, but the angle is too narrow for Tevez to force the ball over the line.
Stale Solbakken's side take the lead, and it is no less than they deserve! Pierre Bengtsson whips in a lovely free-kick from deep which causes a bit of a melee in the Juve box. Angelo Ogbonna doesn't deal with it, and the ball falls nicely for Jorgensen who taps the ball into the bottom corner. The Serie A outfit have been stunned!
Nicolai Jorgensen has given FC Copenhagen the lead! A dream start and the Parken Stadium goes absolutely bonkers!
It's a case of so far so good for the hosts, as they are more than matching their Italian conterparts at present, spreading the ball around nicely, making their opponents chase shadows. Christian Bolanos tries to dink a pass over the top for Nicolai Jorgensen, but there is just too much pace on it.
Antonio Conte will be pulling his hair out on the touchlines after Leonardo Bonucci needlessly gives the ball away in a dangerous area. Bengtsson quickly finds Adi, who ignores the options to his right and left, going for goal himself. It's an easy save for Gianluigi Buffon, but that was far too casual from the visitors.
Juventus force a couple of set piece situations themselves at the other end, and they nearly make the breakthrough. Andrea Pirlo catches the Copenhagen backline sleeping with a clever corner to the edge of the box. Summer signing Carlos Tevez is there to meet it, and the Argentine's strike goes just beyond the near post. It's been a lively start so far.
They may well be the underdogs, but straight from the off Copenhagen are looking anything but overawed by the occasion - Fanendo Adi goes on a jinking run that is stopped on the edge of the area by Paul Pogba. It is a promising position, but Bengtsson's effort strikes the top of the wall.
FC Copenhagen get us kicked off in Denmark - let Champions League battle commence.
FC Copenhagen: Wiland, Jacobsen, Mellberg, Sigurdsson, Bengtsson, Bolanos, Claudemir, Delaney, Braaten, Jorgensen, Adi. Subs: Jensen, Remmer, Margreitter, Kristensen, Toutouh, Gislason, Santin. Juventus: Buffon, Cheillini, Ogbonna, Peluso, Bonucci, Lichsteiner, Pogba, Pirlo, Vidal, Tevez, Quagliarella. Subs: Storari, De Ceglie, Padoin, Asamoah, Isla, Giovinco, Llorente.
For the hosts, centre back Olof Mellberg is set to play against his former club, while fellow defender Kris Stadsgaard is out injured and goalkeeper Kim Christensen will also miss the game due to a contractual dispute. There are no new injury concerns for Juve boss Antonio Conte as Andrea Barzagli and Mirko Vucinic have shaken off knocks in time for this evening's clash. Angelo Ogbonna and Fabio Quagliarella, meanwhile, are pushing for starts at the beginning of the Serie A outfit's European journey.
Croatia's Ivan Bebek will be tonight's referee, as the 36-year-old from Rijeka officiates his first match of this season's Champions League - Bebek is highly rated within his country as he is considered to be the best referee in Croatia. He has only been in charge of two gams so far this campaign, and leniency hasn't exactly been the order of the day in either of those two affairs as he has brandished nine yellow cards, which if my maths serves me correct averages at 4.5 bookings a game – FC Copenhangen and Juventus will have to be very careful with their challenges this evening then.
European powerhouses they may be, but Juventus will be eager to end a dry spell in this tournament, starting with tonight's match. It has been 17 years since the Italian side last lifted the Champions League trophy, and they will not want to make it 18. They have injected a lot more quality into their squad over the summer with the likes of Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Angelo Ogbonna all being brought into the team. They have had a relatively solid start to their season as well, as they are unbeaten in their first three games in Serie A so far – they have won two and drawn one, meaning they are fifth in the league table. Whichever way you look at it, Antonio Conte's men are the clear favourites this evening.
It is fair to say that not many would be backing tonight's hosts to escape out of Group B and into the Champions League knock-out phase, and their start to their domestic season suggests that the majority would be right. It took seven games before the Danish side eventually secured their first victory of the campaign, and they currently sit just one place above the relegation zone in tenth. However, they may just take solace from their run in this particular competition in the 2010-2011 season when they advanced beyond the group phase, before they eventually got knocked out by Chelsea. A win this evening would do their confidence the world of good.
This is where it all starts for the teams who aspire to be the best of the best in European competition – the group stages of the Champions League. The serious stuff starts right here as the finest Europe has to offer square off against each other to get their hands on that famous trophy in May. Tonight sees the first round of group games, and our attention will be fixed on the match between FC Copenhagen and Juventus in Denmark this evening. The other two sides in this group are Galatasaray and Real Madrid, so placing in the top two of Group B will not be an easy feat. Will the hosts upset the favourites? Or will the Italian outfit take their first step towards European glory? Join us here at 19:45 to find out.
