Bayern München vs. CSKA Moscow
Minute Commentary
Last season's Champions League winners Bayern Munich got the defence of their trophy off to the perfect start, easily beating CSKA Moscow 3-0 at the Allianz Arena. David Alaba didn't waste any time putting the hosts in front, bending a dipping free-kick into the bottom corner of the Russian goal inside five minutes. Mario Mandzukic came close twice, hitting the inside of the post on one occasion, but eventually doubled the lead with a towering header before half-time. That effectively ended the game as a contest but Arjen Robben rubbed salt into the wounds when he volleyed in a third in a flat second period. Pep Guardiola will be happy but will also realise that tougher challenges lay ahead if his team are to retain Europe's top prize.
And that's full-time at the Allianz Arena. Bayern Munich ease to a 3-0 victory over CSKA Moscow.
Three minutes of added time have been signalled at the Allianz Arena, as Bayern continue to play amongst themselves.
Bastian Schweinsteiger smashes at goal from 20 yards out but Igor Akinfeev parries. Xherdan Shaqiri is alert to the loose ball but he's flagged offside as he looks to retrieve possession.
Almost 4-0! An unmarked Xherdan Shaqiri floats to the near post to meet a Thomas Muller corner but his deft touch doesn't find the right side of the far corner. The Swiss youngster really should have scored.
The hosts are satisfied with keeping the ball inside the CSKA half as the match nears its conclusion. Claudio Pizarro has the ball in the net after rounding Igor Akinfeev but he's miles offside, and knows it.
The second half has hardly been a fantastic spectacle but it's a case of job done for Bayern, who have rarely been threatened by CSKA. Xherdan Shaqiri seems keen to have an impact on the match but his scuffed effort from the edge of the area doesn't trouble the Russian goal.
Arjen Robben receives a standing ovation as he makes way for Xherdan Shaqiri. The Dutch winger has had another majestic European evening and grabbed a goal to round off his performance.
Keisuke Honda has undoubtedly been CSKA's brightest player tonight but his final ball has been lacking - as his latest attempted through ball proves when it is easily intercepted by Dante. Meanwhile, Stephen Zubar is replaced by Georgi Milanov for the visitors.
And the substitutions continue to happen. Mario Mandzukic is coming off and veteran frontman Claudio Pizarro is on to lead the line for Bayern.
CSKA are also turning to their replacements. Ahmed Musa has worked tirelessly but Konstantin Bazelyuk replaces him up front for the visitors. Meanwhile, Mario Mandzukic wastes a free header from a corner kick by aiming straight at Igor Akinfeev.
With the game in the bag, Bayern are going to make their first change. Toni Kroos is the man coming off, with Bastian Schweinsteiger emerging from the bench in his place.
CSKA may as well start the car. David Alaba lobs the ball over the Russian defensive line and Arjen Robben evades the offside trap and waits for the ball to drop before smashing past Igor Akinfeev.
Game over! Arjen Robben makes it 3-0!
Philipp Lahm has taken to his new central midfield role like a duck to water this season. He's been a calming influence alongside Toni Kroos this evening, linking defence and midfield well and giving Pep Guardiola a different option in the middle of the park - as if he was short of combinations.
Mario Mandzukic almost pokes Dante's long, diagonal pass into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box but he can't get enough contact on the ball. He'd ghosted in between Georgy Schennikov and Sergey Ignashevich to create the opportunity.
Arjen Robben has been bright tonight and is looking a good bet to grab a goal himself. He works half a yard on the edge of the box and gets a left-footed strike away, which is deflected, but the nick is kind to Igor Akinfeev who clings onto it.
The hosts appear to be content to retain possession in this half and cement the victory. There's less urgency to their passing but CSKA still can't get any real territorial advantage, with Ahmed Musa a lonely figure up top for the visitors.
Bayern like to play out from the back but it has a tendency to get them into trouble. Keisuke Honda steals the ball from Dante and threads the ball through to Ahmed Musa, but he overruns it and Jerome Boateng entices the Nigerian to make a rash tackle.
Bayern are continuing to pin CSKA Moscow back into their own defensive third. Arjen Robben almost extends the lead with a vicious volley from 10 yards out but Igor Akinfeev stands tall to beat it away for a corner kick.
We're back underway in Munich, as Bayern and CSKA return out into the Allianz Arena, Can the German side safely negotiate their way through the second 45 minutes or can Leonid Slutsky and his team mount what would be an extraordinary comeback? The Russians are going to try and make something happen by bringing on Zoran Tosic, with Vitinho making way.
Bayern Munich haven't had to get out of second gear in the first half, as they lead CSKA Moscow 2-0 in Bavaria. Last year's Champions League winners got their title defence off to the perfect start when David Alaba's dipping free-kick squirmed past Igor Akinfeev after four minutes. Mario Mandzukic could have doubled the lead just after but was denied by a sprawling Akinfeev but, despite also hitting the post with a low header, he eventually grabbed his goal - a towering header which nestled in the bottom corner of the net. CSKA have rarely threatened and the second period is likely to be no more than a training session for Pep Guardiola's men.
And that's half-time at the Allianz Arena. Bayern Munich lead CSKA Moscow 2-0, in a match that they have controlled from the start.
It's another goal for Bayern and it's come from another set piece. This time, Arjen Robben's inswinging delivery from the right is met by the leaping Mario Mandzukic, who heads down into the bottom right-hand corner of Igor Akinfeev's goal. He looked offside but the assistant referee kept his flag down and Bayern are in total control.
It's in! Mario Mandzukic doubles Bayern's lead!
How did that not go in?! Mario Mandzukic heads Thomas Muller's cross back across goal and the ball strikes the inside of the post, before rolling right across the goal line and into the grateful arms of Igor Akinfeev. That defied physics.
Bayern want a penalty as Franck Ribery is bundled over inside the area by Sergei Ignashevich. The Frenchman throws his arms up in disgust at the referee's decision but there didn't seem to be much in the centre back's challenge.
Georgi Schennikov makes an ambitious dart down the left flank and Keisuke Honda should find the defender in the final third but messes up his through-ball. Bayern, too, relinquish possession cheaply, with Franck Ribery gifting the ball to the visitors. That gives Vitinho the chance to shoot from range but the ball nestles in the arms of Manuel Neuer.
The game is a little more scratchy now, with CSKA valuing some rare but vital possession. Having conducted a hasty warm-up, Bastian Schweinsteiger is sat on the bench again with Rafinha returning to the action after treatment on his ankle.
Rafinha is down after colliding with one of his own players. Phillip Lahm was attempting to tackle Keisuke Honda, but instead caught the Brazilian wing-back's ankle. He appears to be in some pain and Bastian Schweinsteiger is preparing himself on the sideline.
CSKA manager Leonid Slutsky will perhaps be happy with the scoreline after the opening 25 minutes, considering the near total domination of last season's Champions League winners. Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben combine cheekily in a tight situation on the edge of the CSKA box to nearly double that lead but the latter is eventually crowded out.
That's a great chance and it's nearly 2-0! Rafinha is no stranger to getting forward from his position at right-back and this time he manages to break into the CSKA penalty area before getting a shot away. The home supporters think he's found the near post but his rasping drive only bothered the side netting.
The game is continuing to follow the same pattern: constant Bayern Munich attacks with CSKA hoping for a chance on the break. Arjen Robben is looking particularly bright on the right wing but his latest cross towards Mario Mandzukic is just overhit.
Mario Mandzukic heads just over from six yards out after connecting well with a David Alaba cross. Moments earlier, the Croatian frontman had another opening but Vasili Berezutskiy managed to glance the ball away from him with the goal gaping.
CSKA's first chance comes on the counter attack, and falls to Ahmed Musa. The Nigerian forward cuts inside from the left flank and passes Dante but his shot is weak and lacks direction, trickling way wide of Manuel Neuer's goal.
CSKA have barely touched the ball in the opening ten minutes, with Bayern enjoying a huge proportion of possession. The Russians need to get some kind of foothold in the game or they could be humiliated this evening.
As expected, the hosts are dominating proceedings inside the Allianz and that goal has settled any nerves. Mario Mandzukic should really double the lead just after the first but Igor Akinfeev makes a brilliant save after the Croatian breaks the offside trap.
Pontus Wernbloom catches David Alaba to concede a free-kick within 30 metres of the CSKA goal. The Austrian gets up to take the set piece himself and bends a precise effort into the bottom right hand corner, the ball squirming under Igor Akinfeev. A wonderful, dipping strike!
It's in! David Alaba puts Bayern ahead!
Bayern Munich are already exhibiting the fluid style of play that coach Pep Guardiola has become synonymous with. Mario Mandzukic pulls out to the left wing to nod down a diagonal pass towards Franck Ribery in a central position but CSKA Moscow clear before the danger increases.
We're up and running at the Allianz Arena as referee Gianluca Rocchi blows his whistle to signal the start of the match. Bayern Munich are in their dark blue change kit while CSKA wear their all white away colours.
There's no Bastian Schweinsteiger in the Bayern Munich starting XI, with Phillip Lahm continuing in his new central midfield role. As expected, CSKA Moscow recall midfielder Keisuke Honda to their side at the expense of the injured Rasmus Elm.
Last season's Champions League winners Bayern Munich begin their defence of the trophy on Tuesday night as CSKA Moscow head to Bavaria. Bayern dominated on both domestic and European fronts last season, winning an historic treble as manager Jupp Heynckes bowed out in style. Now under Pep Guardiola - himself a Champions League-winning coach with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011 - the Germans are focused on repeating the successes of the last campaign. Guardiola has started well but in between him and three points tonight stands the Russian champions, who are also in excellent form - having not lost a competitive match in nine attempts.
Influential midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was only a substitute for the 2-0 weekend win over Hannover, but he's likely to return to the starting line-up this evening. That will allow Phillip Lahm to revert to his preferred position at full-back but it's not all good news for Bayern, with Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara still sidelined. Mario Gotze has only just returned to full training after injuring himself in the Super Cup against Chelsea, so he will miss out too.
CSKA Moscow boss Leonid Slutsky is unable to call upon his main striker Seydou Doumbia, with the Ivorian striker set to miss out due to injury. Swedish playmaker Rasmus Elm is also unavailable, meaning the only change from the Russian side's victory over Rostov is likely to see Japanese international Keisuke Honda come in for Elm.
Bayern Munich's home form in the Champions League is exceptional, with the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal last season the only time the club has failed to pick up a win at the Allianz Arena in Europe since March 2011. CSKA Moscow's European away form, on the other hand, is patchy at best. Leonid Slutsky's men have won just four times outside Russia in the continent's premier competition in the past decade.
Italian official Gianluca Rocchi is in charge of tonight's group match. The 40-year-old will be assisted by Gianluca Cariolato and Sandro Pozzi.
