Olympiacos vs. Paris SG
Minute Commentary
PSG eased to three points in Greece as they produced a sublime second half showing in Piraeus tonight. It was the hosts who started off on top and within a minute Vladimir Weiss had rocketed a shot off the bar. Fifteen minutes later they hit the post through an exquisite David Fuster volley. But the visitors took the lead on 20 minutes - Edinson Cavani scored what was probably the easiest goal he's ever scored. Moments later through a moment of magic from Weiss had the home side level. Into the second half and PSG were on top and went ahead just before the 70-minute mark - Thiago Motta headed in a corner. Five minutes later PSG doubled their lead through a carbon copy of their second goal - Motta again nodding home. With the game heading towards full time, summer signing Marquinhos headed in a fourth as Motta turned provider. A great win for the visitors but Olympiakos have no reason not to hold their heads high.
Full time here and it's resounding for PSG. The final score is 4-1.
Into added time and PSG are still controlling the game. They've been the only side in the game in this second half.
The hosts get a late corner to try and grab a consolation, but Paulo Machado's delivery isn't the greatest and the ball is hoofed all the way back to Robert in goal. Olympiakos need a miracle to get something from this game now.
MARQUINHOS makes it four! The centre back makes a smart run to the near post and nods home Thiago Motta's corner. That's PSG's third goal from a corner this match.
Roberto pulls out a superb double save to deny Zlatan Ibrahimovic from getting on the scoresheet. His one-handed save from the penalty was special, and his quick reaction to Ibrahimovic's attempted dink was good.
Finally, at the third time of asking, PSG get a penalty, and there's no disputing it. It's a clear trip on Zlatan Ibrahimovic by Andreas Samaris. The Swede places the ball on the spot.
Ezequiel Lavezzi takes the whole of Olympiakos' right-hand side for fools as he tricks his way in between them before finding Maxwell. The left-back is in space on the edge of the box but his weak cross is straight into the arms of Roberto.
Vladimir Weiss stands over the free kick from 40 or so yards. He absolutely whacks it towards Salvatore Sirigu. The Italian stopper catches the ball but he's nearly pushed into his net due to the sheer power of the shot.
It's that man again! Another header from THIAGO MOTTA sees PSG ease into a 3-1 lead, and it's nothing less than they deserve based on this second half performance. That'll ease any remaining nerves.
Despite going a goal ahead, PSG look like they've gone a goal down. They look shaky and have zero composure. If this keeps up they could end up being level again.
A corner causes havoc in the box and THIAGO MOTTA heads home to put PSG back in the lead. The defenders may claim Edinson Cavani's missed header put them off, but it didn't put the Brazilian off who wheels away in celebration.
66' HISS
Hisses come from the away end in Greece as the away side feel they should have a penalty. Blaise Matuidi goes down under a rash tackle but the German official refuses to point to the spot.
And the loanee very nearly creates a goal within a minute of entering the game. He nods a cross down for David Fuster to volley, but the midfielder's effort is high of Salvatore Sirigu's crossbar.
Alejandro Dominguez, who has looked fairly lively today, is replaced by Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell.
There isn't much on for Edinson Cavani as he's forced wide by Carl Medjani, but out of nothing he fires the ball at Roberto's near post, prompting the 'keeper to punch the ball out wide for a PSG corner.
The table have completely turned on its head now. PSG look exactly like Olympiakos did in the first, half. They're quicker physically and mentally and a goal looks to be coming.
Ezequiel Lavezzi beats Vladimir Weiss all ends up but the Argentine is caught by Weiss' leg and goes down while running at pace. PSG have yet another free kick in a dangerous area, but can't get a head to the delivery. Still 1-1.
Ezequiel Lavezzi - who has just come on for Lucas Moura - sends a ball over deep to Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan is offside, but before he knows it, pulls out a lovely acrobatic effort that is well saved by Roberto.
Whatever Laurent Blanc has said at half time has worked. PSG have come out much the stronger team. They win an early corner after Marco Verratti's shot from inside the area takes a double deflection and rolls out.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is stood yards offside as he receives the ball from Edinson Cavani, yet sends an evil glare towards the linesman when he's flagged. He had no case there.
The home side kick off and the second period is up and running here.
The sides went in level at the break but it wouldn't have been surprising had either side ended the half leading. Olympiakos started with a bang and only 50 seconds in Vladimir Weiss produced a fantastic effort that rattled the crossbar. If that wasn't close enough, David Fuster came even closer when good technique from him saw his volley crash off of the inside of the post, but Dimitris Siovas couldn't poke home the rebound. Against the run of play, the French champions took the lead. Zlatan Ibrahimovic found himself in lots of space inside the box and the Swede had the easy task of rolling the ball into Edinson Cavani's path - the Uruguayan duly slotted home. However, the hosts didn't lie down, and minutes later were level through Weiss' sublime solo goal. The winger held off one man and beat another two with ease before shooting past Salvatore Sirigu. The action slowed after this and a half-hearted appeal for a penalty was as near as either side came to a clear chance. Half time and it's 1-1.
Felix Brych brings the half to a close and the scores are level.
Edinson Cavani has the ball on the left wing and runs with it, he sees space in the middle but his cross is way too powerful and Thiago Motta just doesn't have the energy to reach it.
The free kick is whipped over to the far post by Gregory Van der Wiel and the away fans scream for a penalty, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic appears to be bundled down at the far post. The referee waves play on though.
With the height that Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani provide, balls into the box could prove dangerous for the home side. The Swede is tripped and PSG get a free kick in a hazardous position.
PSG have upped their game since they conceded the equaliser. They've been quicker to the ball and have created more when in possession. Most of the play for the last five has been in the hosts' half.
Gaetan Bong commits a foul on a man in blue and is the first person to go into Felix Brych's notebook.
Thiago Motta curls over a lovely free kick to the far post from the right-hand flank, only for captain Thiago Silva to come an inch from connecting. The ball subsequently bounces out for a goal kick.
28' POOR
Vladimir Weiss makes his first error of the game, after a good piece of play, however. He works his way onto the left and plays the ball towards the edge of the box, but there's barely any power on the ball and PSG clear it.
We're level here and it's VLADIMIR WEISS who equalises! It's an outstanding individual goal. He holds off Maxwell, nutmegs Thiago Silva and drops his shoulder to evade Marquinhos' tackle before firing past Salvatore Sirigu. Much deserved for the hosts.
Giannis Maniatis makes a good run down the right and plays a quick ball into the box. Marquinhos and Gregory Van der Wiel sandwich Kostas Mitroglou as Salvatore Sirigu also comes out, but the striker beats all three and nods over the 'keeper but also over the net. A decent chance there.
It's against the run of play but the visitors are ahead and it's EDINSON CAVANI who taps into the empty net after good play from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Olympiakos will be knocked by that, but shouldn't be disheartened.
Even closer! The hosts hit the post through David Fuster's incredible volley. The ball rolls out to Dimitris Siovas but Salvatore Sirigu makes another good save to deny the defender. Olympiakos are controlling the game.
Thiago Motta is sloppy in possession as he casually tries to play his way out when surrounded at the corner flag. He loses the ball and David Fuster plays it across the box. Thiago Silva has plenty of space but he smashes the ball out for a corner.
That said, the home side have just come inches from opening the scoring here. A lovely sprayed ball gets an attack underway with Alejandro Dominguez doing well after a superb first touch. He finds Vladimir Weiss on the left and the Slovak cuts inside and hammers his shot just past Salvatore Sirigu's right-hand post.
The Greeks get a free kick just after half-way, but it's overhit and PSG can restart from a goal kick. The game has had a really slow start, on the whole.
Lucas Moura is the creator again as he chips the ball over the home defence to Edinson Cavani, who flicks a header into the path of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede scores if it isn't for Roberto's last ditch interception.
Lucas Moura whips in a free kick from the left, but Roberto has no trouble in clearing the ball out to Kostas Mitroglou. Mitrolglou is fouled as he controls the ball though, and Olympiakos have a free kick in their own half.
WOW. Olympiakos go so close to breaking the deadlock in under a minute. Vladimir Weiss picks up the ball on the right and comes inside, before unleashing a powerful drive onto the bar. The frame is still shaking. That will wake PSG up.
The first Champions League group game for these two sides is underway. The hosts are kicking from right to left.
Laurent Blanc names a very strong side tonight, with all summer signings included in the squad. Full line-up: Sirigu; Van der Wiel, Marquinhos, Silva, Maxwell; Lucas, Motta, Veratti, Matuidi; Ibrahimovic, Cavani. Subs: Douchez, Camara, Digne, Jallet, Menez, Rabiot, Lavezzi.
Former Man City ace Vladimir Weiss starts for the hosts tonight, while veteran striker Javier Saviola makes the bench. Full line-up: Roberto; Maniatis, Medjani, Siovas, Bong; Machado, Samaris, Fuster, Dominguez, Weiss; Mitroglou. Subs: Megyeri, Holebas, Manolas, Ndinga, Campbell, Yatabare, Saviola.
Stay tuned for live commentary from 7.45pm as Liam Fountain takes you through the game.
Current Greek champions Olympiakos face a tough test tonight as they host big-spending Paris Saint-Germain this evening. It couldn't have been a harder start for the Kokkini on paper, as the group also consists of Benfica and RSC Anderlecht. The hosts have got off to a fine start in the Greek Superleague, winning all of their league games in the process. PSG look the strongest in the group, but would be foolish to take anyone lightly. They've started Ligue 1 well, placing behind Monaco and Saint Etienne after five games.
Olympiakos will be full of confidence heading into this Champions League tie, after their impressive start to their domestic campaign. Inevitably, as it always is, the Champions League will prove to be a lot harder as Europe's top teams go head-to-head. They have options in midfield and up front, with new signings Javier Saviola and Vladimir Weiss linking up with creative veteran Ariel Ibagaza. A name familiar to many will be their number one stopper Roy Carroll, who will be hoping to keep a clean sheet against some of the World's best.
PSG's squad just oozes talent and with two of the planet's greatest strikers in Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, they could be up there with the highest scorers this year. Although Cavani, was their star signing at €63.3m, they also strengthened by bringing in Lucas Digne and Marquinhos for a further combined €50. Ezequiel Lavezzi and Lucas will provide pace and trickery down the flanks while in defence, Brazailian trio Thiago Silva, Alex and Maxwell will prove a tough task when it comes to getting past them.
These two sides have never met before so it will be interesting to see how they line-up against each other and what approach they take to the game. Though most people's money will be on the visitors, Greece isn't the easiest of places to come and take away three points. Compared to ten years ago, the outcome may have been different, with PSG failing to reach this competition and Olympiakos having the likes of Rivaldo, Giovanni and club legend Predrag Dordevic.
Felix Brych will be in charge to tonight's match-up between the two sides. The German official has sparked controversy in the Champions League before, when he dismissed Nemanja Vidic for Manchester United in their group game with Otelul Galati in October 2011. Brych has taken charge of only five games so far this term, and in these games he has issued five red cards – including two in two of those.
