Benfica vs. Anderlecht
Minute Commentary
90' BENFICA 2, ANDERLECHT 0
A fully-deserved win for Benfica, despite a valiant late effort from the visitors. The first half was a stroll in the park for the Portuguese side, with Filip Djuricic and Luisao giving them a two-goal lead. Anderlecht grew into the second period, but failed to create anything noteworthy until late on, when they had a goal disallowed, and Matias Suarez's header saved. Benfica take their expected position of second in Group C following the opening night of Champions League football.
90' FULL TIME
The referee concludes proceedings, with Benfica running out 2-0 winners.
90' GOOD SAVE!
Artur Moraes palms the ball away from a Matias Suarez header - that's about the closest Anderlecht have come. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
88' OFFSIDE!
Anderlecht thought they'd clawed one back, but the flag dashes their hopes. A free kick travels through a packed penalty area all the way into the goal. The assistant waves for offside, despite nobody touching the ball. John Van den Brom isn't best pleased. Lima has come on for Cordozo, and Matias Suarez has been booked.
87' FAR TOO EASY
It's all too easy for Benfica's goalkeeper, who strolls out and catches Frank Acheampong's cross. That's been the story of the night.
85' SEEING THE GAME OUT
Benfica are shoring things up now, adopting a more defensive approach, keeping the ball and running down the clock.
80' GAME OVER?
Despite an improvement in the second half, Artur Moraes has still had very little to do. I can't see that changing in the final ten minutes, as Anderlecht's efforts begin to fizzle out. Dennis Praet has come on for Massimo Bruno in John Van den Brom's final change.
75' SUBSTITUTIONS
Both sides make changes, with Jorge Jesus bringing on Maxi Pereira in place of Filip Djuricic. Anderlecht's boss gives Gohi Cyriac the nod; he comes on for Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has fared well tonight, despite having relatively poor service for most of the night.
73' TAKES TOO LONG
Lazar Markovic initially does well, evading the challenges of two Anderlecht defenders, but dithers too long on the ball, allowing the visitors' back line to re-organise and get the ball clear.
71' GREAT FLICK
Lazar Markovic outwits the Anderlecht defence with a clever flick, allowing Filip Djuricic through. The referee dubiously pulls him back for handball, and the visitors get a let-off. Aleksandar Mitrovic has been cautioned. Cardozo fires wide after controlling the ball well.
68' FOOT OFF THE GAS
Anderlecht have lost a little bit of momentum as they become sloppy in the final third. Benfica are giving the ball away too cheaply, too, so the visitors need to refocus and capitalise on the hosts' mistakes if they want to get back into this game. Ola John has replaced Enzo Perez in the centre of the park.
66' OFFSIDE!
The flag is up to deny Filip Djuricic, who would have been through following a defence-splitting pass from Cardozo.
62' GREAT SAVE
Artur Moraes is finally called into action, beating away Aleksandar Mitrovic's header at the back post. The referee had already whistled for a foul, but Anderlecht are looking threatening all of a sudden. Fabrice N'Sakala and Frank Acheampong are combining very well down the left flank. An Anderlecht goal would stir the final half an hour up at the Estadio da Luz!
60' ACTION DIED DOWN
Not much to report in the last few minutes. Benfica seem content with their two-goal advantage, while Anderlecht are still struggling to test the keeper.
56' GOOD DEFENDING
A promising attack is quelled by Benfica, as Mitrovic isn't allowed space to turn in the box. Still no clear-cut opportunities for the visitors. Garay's shot is saved at the other end.
54' GETTING FORWARD AGAIN
Frank Acheampong makes progress down the left again, skipping away from Almeida. The Ghanaian midfielder eventually runs into trouble, though. He just needs to find that final ball; he's been Anderlecht's main threat since coming on.
50' PROMISING
Anderlecht have certainly started this half better than the last, and not just because they haven't conceded yet. They have to be wary of counter-attacks, though, as Nemanja Matic almost threads the ball through for Markovic.
47' IMMEDIATE INVOLVEMENT
Frank Acheampong impacts on the game straight away, sending a drilled cross in from the left, following a neat flick from Mitrovic. Artur Moraes is alert and gathers the ball.
46' KICK-OFF
Anderlecht get the second period underway, hoping it'll be a better 45 minutes than the last. Frank Acheampong has come on to replace the yellow-carded Demy de Zeeuw.
45' FIRST HALF SUMMARY
Benfica dominate the opening 45 minutes without too much trouble at all. The rearguard have been spectators, and the attackers haven't had to work too hard either. They opened the scoring on four minutes, Djuricic tapping in Almeida's saved effort. A host of chances followed, with Cardozo the main threat. Benfica doubled their lead at around the half-hour mark, with Luisao's fine effort on the turn following a cross from Siqueira.
45' HALF TIME
Aleksandar Mitrovic gets forward for Anderlecht, but he hesitates in shooting and end up wasting the chance. That's the last action of the half. It's Benfica 2, Anderlecht 0.
42' GREAT FIRST HALF FOR HOSTS
It's been a perfect game so far from the hosts. They've dominated from start to finish, with Anderlecht producing mild threats at best. Fabrice N'Sakala's cross misses everyone in the box and Benfica regain possession.
39' POTENTIAL
Aleksandar Mitrovic, Anderlecht's summer signing from Red Star Belgrade, has shown real promise in the league for the Belgian champions. The service just isn't good enough tonight, though; he's hardly seen the ball.
33' NO WAY BACK
I can't see a way back for Anderlecht here. Just as they were beginning to get back into the game, their defense crumbles and sets them back. I think that could be the theme for this evening. Demy de Zeeuw is booked for a poor challenge on Andre Almeida.
31' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Anderlecht's defensive problems cost them, as they fail to deal with a corner kick properly. The ball is sent back in by Guilherme Siqueira, and LUISAO scores a great goal, expertly chesting the ball away from his marker and firing the ball past the keeper on the turn.
31' GOOOAAALLL
Benfica double their lead! Luisao is the scorer!
29' YELLOW CARDS
Aleksandar Mitrovic is the first man to go into the book, lunging at the ball and being justly punished. Moments later, Perez is cautioned for kicking the ball away after the referee's whistle.
25' BENFICA CHANCE
Benfica are creating again now, with a lovely one-two splitting the visitor's defence. Matic tip-toes through the defence, but Cardozo gets in his way and the chance is squandered.
22' CHANCES CONTINUE
The chances keep coming, this time for Anderlecht, as Bruno dinks the ball over the defence for Aleksandar Mitrovic, who fails to beat his man. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
19' TURNING THE SCREW
After a brief lull in play, Benfica are hungry for a second goal. Firstly, Cardozo receives the ball creatively, skipping past two players with some neat skills before cutting the ball back from the by-line. Nobody is on hand to tap the ball in, though. Oscar Cardozo then has a left-footed shot saved from distance.
17' LIMITED JOY
The good news for Anderlecht fans is that they are finally seeing more of the ball. The bad news is they're just passing it round in their own half. Artur Moraes, and indeed his entire back line, have had no part in tonight's clash so far.
15' GOOD PRESSING
That said, Benfica are doing a good job of suppressing Anderlecht's creativity. The visitors are having to resort to fruitless long balls, and the hosts can pile the pressure on once more.
12' DEFENSIVE FRAILTY
Benfica's early one-goal advantage doesn't rule out a result for Anderlecht; they're very capable going forward, and are quite likely to breach the Portuguese side's defence at some point. It's at the back where the worries lie - the Belgian champions have already shipped ten goals this season, and Benfica look more likely to add to their lead than Anderlecht look like equalising.
10' ANDERLECHT ATTACK
The visitors manufacture their first attack of the evening, with Demy de Zeeuw springing through midfield. There's no support for him, though, and his delivery into the box is easily dealt with.
7' RELENTLESS
Benfica are immediately on the search for a second goal. This time Cardozo gets involved, cleverly maneuvering the ball into the stride of Lazar Markovic, but the young striker is surrounded and forced to give up possession in a promising area.
5' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Benfica get their Champions League campaign off to a perfect start, as they open the scoring within five minutes. A quick interchange - not for the first time this evening - befuddles the visitor's defence, allowing Andre Almeida to fire in with his left foot. Silvio Proto spills the shot and FILIP DJURICIC is on hand to tap the ball in.
4' GOOOAAALLL
Filip Djuricic gives the hosts the lead - that didn't take long!
3' EARLY CORNER
Benfica force an early flag kick with Anderlecht contained inside their own area during the opening minutes. Garay delivers the corner towards Cardozo, but the striker can't time his strike properly and the defence manage to clear.
2' WIN FOR THE VISITORS?
Anderlecht are looking for their first away win in the Champions League since 2005, when they triumphed over Real Betis. The home contingent have other ideas, though, as they are backing their team passionately tonight. It's certainly an intimidating atmosphere for the visitors.
1' KICK-OFF
Benfica get the game underway at the Estadio da Luz.
0' ANDERLECHT LINE-UP
Anderlecht's line-up is as follows: Proto; N'Sakala, Kouyate, Mbemba, Gillet; Kljesta, De Zeeuw, Milivojevic, Suarez; Bruno, Mitrovic. Mitrovic netted twice at the weekend, so Belgian fans will look to him as this evening's chief goal-getter.
0' BENFICA LINE-UP
The Benfica starting XI is as follows: Artur; Andre Almeida, Luisao, Garay, Siquera; Perez, Fejsa, Djuricic, Matic; Cardozo, Markovic. Jorge Jesus has plenty of attacking flair amongst the substitutes this evening; Rodrigo, Lima and John are all available should Benfica feel the need for a little extra firepower.
0' ANDERLECHT'S RECENT RECORD
Anderlecht boast a proud record in continental football, having amassed 180 matches in European competition. However, their steeped history is dwarfed by recent results. Last year was their first year in the Champions League group stages since the 2006/07 season, and they were unceremoniously knocked out in the earliest fashion possible, netting only four goals in the process. Their lone victory came against Zenit St. Petersburg.
0' BENFICA LOOKING FOR OPENING WIN
The Estadio da Luz – this year's Champions League final venue – is also the stage for tonight's opening encounter. Benfica will be optimistic after a deep run in the Europa League last term, losing only narrowly to Chelsea in the final. Now they face Europe's elite, and with PSG the favourites to top Group C, competition for second is even more intense. Anything less than three points tonight against the Belgian champions will be disappointing.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
This evening sees the start of another Champions League campaign, with the titans of European football locking horns to kickstart their group stage positively. We will be following Group C – a mishmash of the finest teams from France, Belgium, Greece and Portugal. Anderlecht take on Benfica at the Estadio da Luz, with the action getting started at around 19:45 BST. Join us around half an hour before when we'll have the latest team news, line-ups and live text commentary.
