Napoli vs. Marseille
Minute Commentary
Napoli came from behind to beat a spirited Marseille in what could prove to be a pivotal game in Group F. Andre Ayew put the visitors ahead early in the match, only for Gokhan Inler and Gonzalo Higuain strikes to send Napoli in ahead at the break. The game remained surprisingly stretched after the interval, and Florian Thauvin deservedly pulled the French club back level mid-way through the second period. The ruthless Gonzalo Higuain punished a Marseille defensive lapse to score what proved to be the winner with 15 minutes remaining, but a mix of endeavour from the visitors and naivety from the hosts ensured that the game was nervy right up until the final whistle. With Arsenal winning away at Dortmund it leaves Napoli joint-top alongside the English side ahead of a huge game in Germany in the penultimate round of matches. In Naples it finished Napoli 3, Marseille 2.
The final whistle goes and Napoli breathe a huge sigh of relief. The most winnable game of their six group matches ended up being a bit of a thriller, with Marseille pushing them to the limit in an end-to-end 3-2 win for the Serie A high-fliers.
Lorenzo Insigne has a chance to set up a match-winning opportunity, but doesn't read the run of Marek Hamsik and sends his through-ball the wrong way. A late Marseille sucker-punch remains possible, but time is running out...
It's chance after chance at the end of this game, and this time it's Napoli who are left holding their heads in disbelief as Gonzalo Higuain's shot flies across the face of goal. It took a lovely jinking run from the Argentine to create a shooting opportunity from a tight angle, but he still looks hugely frustrated that he didn't find the back of the net.
The self-coined 'European expert' in charge of Napoli should really know to keep it tight when a goal up in such an important game. Instead, the hosts are committing bodies forward at every opportunity, but it's leaving them hugely vulnerable to Marseille counter-attacks, and only a poorly struck effort by Mario Lemina saves them on this occasion. The midfielder had only Pepe Reina left to beat, but rushed the shot.
Lorenzo Insigne cuts inside his full-back and keeps his run going until he has a hint of a chance to get a shot away. He pulls the trigger, sending a curling effort beyond the sprawling Steve Mandanda... only to see the ball cannon back off the upright and away to safety! That was a terrific effort and should have been game over, but Marseille survive.
An Andre Ayew shot flashes wide of the far post to remind Napoli that they are just a goal ahead in this crucial match in their qualification campaign. An equaliser late on for the French visitors would be massively damaging, particularly with Arsenal currently leading away at Dortmund.
Jose Maria Callejon goes for goal from the free-kick, but his effort doesn't dip in time and flies harmlessly over Steve Mandanda's crossbar.
Jacques-Alaixys Romao goes in with an extremely high foot on Blerim Dzemaili, and he is shown a yellow card for his troubles.
A ball over the top was aimed towards the offside Marek Hamsik. Hamsik left it, Dries Mertens latched on to it, and his cross was tapped in at the back post by Gonzalo Higuain. Marseille were completely thrown by Marek Hamsik in that offside position, but he didn't 'interfere' with the move so the goal is allowed to stand.
Gonzalo Higuain scores for Napoli!
The visitors were under the cosh for long periods of the first-half after their initial surge, but have found a bit of momentum at this crucial stage of the game.
Jordan Ayew makes way for Andre-Pierre Gignac.
This should be the 'easiest' game of a daunting group stage for Napoli and, with crunch matches against Dormund and Arsenal to come, they really can't afford to drop points against the French underdogs.
Jeremy Morel's cross was perfect to pick out Florian Thauvin at the back post, and the midfielder just managed to wrap his found around his marker to steer the ball past a helpless Pepe Reina. 2-2!
Florian Thauvin equalises for Marseille!
Jose Maria Callejon slides a through-ball into the run of Gonzalo Higuain, but Nicolas Nkoulou does superbly to muscle the centre-forward off the ball and emerge with it at his feet.
Still it's Napoli on top, and the home fans are in fine voice. Goran Pandev whips in an excellent cross in the direction of Gonzalo Higuain, but Steve Mandanda comes charging off his line to cut it out.
With Marseille pressing for a goal it's leaving them wide open on the break, but as of yet Napoli haven't been able to take full advantage.
The game is back underway, with both teams unchanged.
The whistle goes to end a fascinating first 45 minutes in Naples. The visitors stunned Rafa Benitez's side with an Andre Ayew goal, but the lead didn't last long, as Gokhan Inler and Gonzalo Higuain turned the game on its head with two strikes in as many minutes. It would be tough to bet against the Serie A side taking three points from here, but with just one goal in it there's always a chance of an upset.
Rafa's side have been in sensational form this season, and are proving difficult for the visitors to contain since the goals. Callejon is pulling the strings in midfield, and the runs of Higuain will be a huge concern for the French outfit.
Ayew is hauled down by Fernandez and the Napoli man is shown the first card of the game.
That Napoli double whammy has completely turned the group on its head. A win for the Italians would leave them in an excellent position to qualify instead of Arsenal… but there's still plenty of football left before the knockout stages.
And suddenly it's all turned around! The ball drops to Gonzalo Higuain inside the Marseille penalty area and he strikes a vicious volley under Steve Mandanda to equalise!
It's in! Gonzalo Higuain scores!
What a goal by Gokhan Inler! Federico Fernandez's header is saved well by Steve Mandanda but Marseille can only half-clear to the edge of their own box. Gokhan Inler is there and he unleashes a vicious, dipping volley into the bottom left-hand corner of the visitors' goal.
It's in! Gokhan Inler equalises!
Marseille are having their best spell of the game, with Mathieu Valbuena teasing the Napoli defence as he tries to carve open an opportunity. He doesn't have much support, though, and the home side can dispossess him.
An equaliser is on the cards. Napoli control possession with great composure inside the final third, biding their time before Gokhan Inler chips the ball in to Jose Callejon, who had peeled off his marker. Unfortunately for the hosts, the ball skips off the surface and bounces into Steve Mandanda's gloves.
Napoli look to react immediately as Dries Mertens takes the ball past Jeremy Morel on the outside, but Steve Mandanda holds on to the winger's resulting shot. He had to cling on as Gonzalo Higuain was lurking.
Marseille are ahead against the run of play, and the goal has come from the first corner kick of the game. Florian Thauvin delivered the inswinging cross and Andre Ayew pulled away from his marker to head into the far post after making a dash to the near post. The visitors have something to hold on to in Naples.
It's in! Andre Ayew scores!
Marseille are understandably reducing the tempo of the game when they're in possession, and they'll surely continue to do that throughout this evening's match. There aren't too many attractive passing options for Elie Baup's backline though, and any possession has been relinquished through long balls so far.
Napoli have had the better of the early exchanges, with both Christian Maggio and Pablo Armero pushing high up the pitch to offer their side width. Dries Mertens has had a bright start too, and he should put Napoli ahead when a lightning counter attack ends in him tucking the ball wide.
Nicolas Nkoulou heads away from his own penalty area but only as far as Jose Callejon, who's 25 yards out and slightly to the right of goal. He strikes the ball on the volley but it's well blocked by Kassim Abdallah.
The teams are out on the Stadio San Paolo pitch and referee Sergey Karasev blows his whistle to signal the start of the game. Napoli are in all light blue, while Marseille wear their all-white kit. Can the Italians grab three points which could see them top the group going into the final two matchdays or will whipping boys Marseille deal Rafa Benitez's men a serious blow?
There's big team news from both teams in Italy this evening. Napoli leave out Marek Hamsik, with Goran Pandev preferred in the hole. Meanwhile, Jordan Ayew starts up front for Marseille at the expense of Andre-Pierre Gignac. Both Hamsik and Gignac are on their respective side's bench instead.
Stay tuned for text updates from tonight's Champions League encounter in the Stadio San Paolo. Bradley King will keep you up-to-date and kick-off is at 7.45pm.
Russian official Sergey Karasev is the man in the middle for tonight's Champions League fixture. The 34-year-old has had one other continental assignment this season, overseeing Bayer Leverkusen's last-gasp win over Real Sociedad last month. Tikhon Kalugin and Anton Averianov are his assistants.
Marseille coach Elie Baup said: "We're playing for pride, to put our club in a favourable light. Today we have zero points in the group, but we hope to get at least a point tomorrow. This match is important. Some people say it is not worth fighting in this competition because we are on zero points, but participating in the Champions League is always something special and unique...[In this group] it is hard to say who is the strongest. Napoli have so many quality players and it will not be easy to play against them."
Napoli coach Rafa Benitez said: "We need to focus on this game against Marseille without thinking of the permutations. Of course I would have preferred an easier group in the Champions League, but we cannot change teams. There are no poor sides in the Champions League. It's important that the fans fill the stadium. Finding the right balance takes time, and we still have to improve the cohesion of the group. I will not ask my players to focus on goal difference because the important thing is to play to win. Goal difference does not matter that much because it is our duty to win."
Since their 2-1 victory over Marseille in France last month, Napoli have been in impressive form which has seen them keep up with Italy's pace-setters, Roma. Three straight wins over Torino, Fiorentina and Catania have guided last season's runners-up to second in Serie A, just three points behind the leaders. Meanwhile, Marseille have been in dreadful form, having not won a match since late September. The loss to Napoli was the penultimate match in a series of five straight defeats, and while the 1-1 draw at Rennes at the weekend stopped the rot, morale remains extremely low in the south of France.
Defender Lucas Mendes is a serious doubt for Marseille's trip to Naples as he nurses an ankle injury, whilst team mate Rod Fanni will almost certainly sit out with a groin problem. Striker Andre Pierre-Gignac dropped to the bench at the weekend, with young forward Jordan Ayew leading the line, though the ex-Toulouse man is expected to be restored to Elie Baup's starting XI. Ayew, who found the net in that match, could keep his place in the starting line-up in Italy though, with wide man Dimitri Payet the most likely candidate to be hauled to the substitutes bench.
Rafa Benitez is unable to call upon attacking wing-backs Juan Zuniga and Giandomenico Mesto who both have knee injuries, with the latter's problem more serious and likely to rule him out until spring. As a result, Christian Maggio and Pablo Armero will occupy the full-back positions. Central defender Miguel Britos is also out through a dislocated collarbone, so Federico Fernandez will partner Raul Albiol at the heart of defence. Meanwhile up front, Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Callejon and Marek Hamsik are all almost certain to start, leaving Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne facing off for the final attacking spot.
Napoli will hope to make use of home advantage against Marseille on Wednesday night, where a victory could take them top of Champions League Group F. Rafa Benitez's side have picked up two wins and a defeat from their opening three matches - an identical tally to qualification rivals Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal who meet in Germany this evening. With at least one of those teams certain to drop points, the Italian side could establish themselves as favourites to progress. But Group F whipping boys Marseille should not be discounted. While even a Europa League qualification spot now seems too big an ask, coach Elie Baup will demand his team play for pride, at least, in their remaining continental fixtures.
