Atlético Madrid vs. Austria Wien
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 4-0 AUSTRIA VIENNA
The away side started brightly in the Vicente Calderon Stadium, but once the hosts got their noses in front, there was only going to be one winner. Miranda gave the home side the lead on 11 minutes, when Vienna failed to deal with Koke's corner. It was 2-0 on 25 minutes thanks to Raul Garcia's header from Diego Costa's floating cross and Filipe Luis made it three in first half stoppage time as he tapped in at the far post. The visitors were restricted to just one real chance in the first half, when Thomas Murg was denied by Thibaut Courtois in the Atletico goal. The second half was one way traffic as Vienna failed to register a single shot on target. Diego Costa thought his luck was out when he saw his penalty well saved after a foul on Cristian Rodriguez, but the Brazilian born striker persevered and deservedly got on the score sheet, curling one in at the near post on 82 minutes, getting his 16th goal in as many games. All in all a very good day at the office for Diego Simeone's side, as Atletico progress into the knockout stages for the first time in five years, and will be genuine contenders if they can keep this kind of form up. Vienna remain rock bottom of Group G, having once again failed to score, with hopes of a Europa League spot fading fast.
90' FINAL WHISTLE
And there's the final whistle. A convincing win for the hosts. Atletico Madrid 4-0 Austria Vienna.
90' MAN OF THE MATCH
It's a toss up between Diego Costa and Heinz Lindner for man of the match. Lindner has kept it down to single figures, but despite the penalty miss, Costa has been superb. His work rate has been fantastic, and he got the goal he deserved.
88' PERFECT PERFORMANCE
Not long to go here and it's been total domination from the home side. Costa goes close again from the edge of the area, but he fails to hit the target. Then the substitute Torres has a go, but he curls one wide.
85' COSTA CLASS
And there it is! Costa finally gets his rewards. Six shots, all on target and finally one goes in. Great play from Torres, he played it into Raul Garcia, whose neat flick found Costa just inside the 18 yard box. Costa finally gets the better of Lindner and bends it in at the near post. That's 16 goals in 16 games.
83' GOOOAAALLL!!!
DIEGO COSTA
82' COSTA FORTUNE
He's going to need a bit of luck if he's to beat Lindner tonight, the goalkeeper may have conceded three already, but he's certainly got the best of the prolific striker.
80' GLOVES ARE OFF
The gloves are literally off for Diego Costa now and he goes close again, but Lindner again gets the better of him and turns it away for a corner.
78' MORE ON THAT PENALTY MISS
It wasn't the worst penalty in the world, but Lindner guessed correctly, got down low to his right and tipped it away. Diego Costa goes down looking for another penalty, but the referee waves away his protests.
75' PENALTY!
And it's a penalty to Atletico. The substitute Cristian Rodriguez drew in the foul, and it's a clear penalty. Diego Costa steps up to make it 16 goals in 16 games. SAVED!
73' STILL 3-0
The corner's dealt with easily and it's still 3-0 here as we head towards the final 15 minutes.
71' YELLOW
Costa wins another free kick and Rasebner picks up the first yellow card of the game. The free kick is played short to Torres, but he loses it and Vienna counter. Atletico counter Vienna's counter and it's a corner for the home team.
68' IT'S ALL GONE QUIET
It's gone a bit quiet here now, but Diego Costa will be desperate for that goal. He chases down Juanfran's overhit cross, but it comes to nothing.
66' SUB
Still 3-0 to the hosts here, as Atletico look to make their third and final substitution. Koke's the man to come off and he's replaced by Uruguayan international Cristian Rodriguez.
64' DANGER
Diego Costa wins a free kick right on the edge of the area as Leovac goes straight through the back of him. Gabi's free kick finds Raul Garcia, but his header is well saved.
60' CORNER
Vienna finally coming forward now, Marin Leovac's cross is headed away, but they earn a corner. The corner's taken short, and promptly given away.
55' ALL ATLETICO
Vienna yet to have a sniff at goal so far in this half as Atletico remain in complete control. It's a second change for the home side now, as Thiago will make way for Josuha Guilavogui.
53' VIENNA CHANGE
Change for Vienna, as the lively Murg is replaced by Markus Suttner and Philipp Hosiner is on for Simkovic.
52' COSTA CHANCE
Another chance for Costa. He beats his man, plays a one-two with Koke, but his shot is straight at the keeper. Vienna making a double change now.
50' CHANCE
Chance for Diego Costa. Filipe dinks in a nice ball from the left, but Atletico's top scorer is caught in two minds and kicks it out for a goal kick when he should perhaps have used his head.
49' MORE OF THE SAME
Atletico starting the second half as they ended the first, as Juanfran goes forward down the right hand side. Vienna get it away this time.
47' CHANGE FOR ATLETICO
Adrian Lopez comes off for young star Oliver Torres, who celebrates his 19th birthday on Sunday. Vienna are unchanged.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Atletico get the second half underway here. The next 45 minutes will just be a case of damage limitation for the visitors.
45' HALF TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 3-0 AUSTRIA VIENNA
Atletico in complete control of this first half. Vienna started brightly, but had nothing to show for it when Miranda put the hosts in front from Koke's corner on 11 minutes. The away side nearly drew level through Thomas Murg, but Courtois denied the youngster from close range. Garcia doubled Atletico's lead on 25 minutes, his looping header finding the back of the net after great work from Diego Costa. And it was 3-0 on the stroke of half time. Juanfran's cross finding his fellow full back at the far post, as Filipe Luis completed the first half rout. 3-0 to Atletico at half time and the Spaniards are heading for the knockout stages.
45' FILIPE FINISH
Filipe finds the back of the net. Juanfran does well again on the right, his cross goes all the way across goal, and his fellow full back is there to finish on the stroke of half time.
45' GOOOAAALLL!!!
FILIPE
42' RARE ATTACK
A rare attack from Austria Vienna. Kienast drives forward, but his speculative effort is well over the bar.
42' DARK HORSES
It surely won't be long until people start talking about Atletico as dark horses to win this competition. It will be four wins out of four after tonight, and their league form is just as impressive, as they sit one point behind Barcelona and five points in front of rivals Real.
39' DOMINATION
Costa nearly gets on to a Filipe Luis clearance, but Lindtner races out of his goal to clear. Still 2-0 here and Atletico well in control.
37' HARD WORKING
Atletico have got a work ethic to match their undoubted talent. Everytime they lose the ball they win it straight back. Diego Simeone has installed his own playing philosophy very well on his players.
34' JUAN WAY TRAFFIC
Vienna struggling to get it out of their own half now. Juanfran and Adrian linking up well on the right hand side. Juanfran's teasing ball was well defended by Vienna, but the right back is causing the Austrians all kinds of problems.
31' CLASSY COSTA
Diego Costa looking a real threat here. It's surely just a matter of time before he makes it 16 goals in 16 games.
29' ALL ATLETICO
And it was so nearly three. Diego Costa's dipping shot looked to be heading for the top corner, but Lindner tips it over for a corner. It's all Atletico now.
27' MORE ON THAT GOAL
A lovely nutmeg from Diego Costa, his floated cross finds Raul Garcia, and he loops a header past Lindner. 2-0 Atletico.
25' GOOOAAALLL!!!
RAUL GARCIA
24' MURG MAGIC
Thomas Murg is looking the most likely to make something happen here for Vienna. The 18 year old is seeing a lot of the ball and was very close to getting an equaliser.
22' CHANCE FOR VIENNA
Vienna's turn to attack. Great touch by Murg after Simkovic played him in. He turned and hit it well, but Courtois spreads himself and makes the save.
19' CHANCE
Great save from Heinz Lindner. Superb footwork from Adrian on the right, he plays it to Diego Costa just inside the Vienna box. Costa eventually gets his shot away, but Lindner does very well to deny him.
16' VIENNA ATTACK
Vienna still going forward here, but you can see why they're yet to score in this competition. Thomas Murg looks to get a shot away for the visitors, but his touch lets him down.
14' AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY
Vienna will be very disappointed with that goal. They've been the better team up until now.
11' ATLETICO 1 VIENNA 0
Juanfran wins the first corner of the game for Atletico. Koke's cross from the right falls at Miranda's feet, and the centreback finishes easily.
11' GOOOAAALLL!!!
MIRANDA
9' KOKE BEWARE
Atletico struggling to get into the game here. You get the feeling they can strike at any moment though. Juanfran's cross misses everyone, before Koke skies one well over the bar.
6' FREE KICK
Free kick for Vienna. It's a long way out, Mader strikes it well, but his shot is wide of Thibaut Courtois' left hand post.
4' BRIGHT START
Vienna have started brightly here, they attack down the right hand side, but Tomas Simkovic's cross is headed away well by Diego Godin.
2' GOAL DROUGHT
Austria Vienna are yet to score in the Champions League this season, but Sunday's hat-trick hero Roman Kienast starts tonight, and will be looking to change that.
1' KICK OFF
The away side get us underway here at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.
0' ATLETICO MADRID STARTING XI
Thibaut Courtois, Diego Godin, Filipe Luis, Juanfran, Miranda, Tiago, Koke, Raul Garcia, Gabi, Adrian, Diego Costa.
0' AUSTRIA VIENNA STARTING XI
Heinz Lindner, Fabian Koch, Manuel Ortlechner, Christian Ramsebner, Marin Leovac, James Holland, Daniel Royer, Florian Mader, Tomas Simkovic, Thomas Murg, Roman Kienast.
0' PREVIEW
A win tonight for Atletico against the struggling Austrians, will see Diego Simeone's side progress to the knockout stage for the first time in five years. Atletico are in fine form both domestically and in Europe, having won all three of their Champions League games, and 11 of their 12 La Liga games, leaving them five points clear of rivals Real. Vienna on the other hand have gained just one point from their opening Champions League fixtures, and their 3-0 victory over Wiener Neustadt on Sunday ended a miserable run of four games without a win. With the form of David Villa and Diego Costa, the latter having scored 15 goals in as many games this season, it's difficult to see anything other than a very comfortable win for the hosts.
0' REF WATCH
Istvan Vad will take control of tonight's game. The Hungarian official will be remembered fondly by Atletico fans, for sending off Rubin's Roman Sharonov in Madrid, in last season's Europa League.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Atletico won comfortably in Vienna when these sides met two weeks ago. Diego Costa netting a brace in a 3-0 win for the Spaniards. Vienna manager Nenad Bjelica was sent off in the game, and will therefore watch tonight's match from the stands.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Leo Baptisto, Javier Manquillo and Arda Turan miss out for the home side tonight, while the visitors will be without Alexander Gorgon and Alexander Grunwald. Roman Kienast could start in place of Philipp Hosiner, following his hat-trick against Wiener Neustadt on Sunday. The most significant absentee tonight will be Nenad Bjelica. The Vienna manager was sent off in the previous meeting between the two sides and now serves a two game suspension.
