Ajax vs. Celtic
Minute Commentary
Ajax move above Celtic into third spot with a 1-0 win in their UEFA Champions League Group H clash at the Amsterdam ArenA. Following a poor opening 45 minutes, the Dutch champions broke the deadlock six minutes into the second period with a classic move that had the Ajax name stamped all over it. Lasse Schone started the move that involved Siem De Jong and Thulani Serero, but it was Serero's glorious touch that put Schone through on goal and the 27-year-old Dane fired his shot beyond Fraser Forster into the far corner. Schone came close to scoring direct from a corner when his inswinger was headed off the line by Emillio Izaguirre. Stefano Denswil was allowed a free header from another Schone corner, but it struck the upright. The Hoops created very little and their bout of travel sickness continues. They have won only one of their last 26 Champions League away games - winning one, drawing one and losing 24. They must now beat AC Milan at Parkhead on matchday five to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
Ajax beat Celtic 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from Lasse Schone.
Mikael Lustig makes a crunching tackle on Ricardo Van Rhijn as the Ajax fans pick up the noise. They think they're home and dry.
Kolbeinn Sigthorsson is replaced by defender Mike Van der Hoorn as we enter added time of which there will be FOUR minutes.
Siem De Jong's near post shot is saved by Fraser Forster and then from the resulting corner, Stefano Denswil's free header strikes the upright and goes behind for a goal-kick.
The Scottish Premiership champions are struggling to keep possession in and around the Ajax area. The Dutch are looking vibrant and full of running as they look to close this game out.
Kris Commons is indeed replaced by Finn Teemu Pukki. Ajax also make a change and it's the experienced Christian Poulsen coming on for Davy Klaassen.
Lasse Schone's shot is easily held by Fraser Forster. Celtic boss Neil Lennon prepares to make his final change. Kris Commons is looking tired and is likely to be coming off.
Joel Veltman is felled by Emillio Izaguirre, who is walking a tight line. Joe Ledley comes on for Beram Kayal as manager Neil Lennon makes his second change.
Viktor Fischer comes on for the impressive Thulani Serero. Meanwhile, former Ajax man Derk Boerrigter is handed a warm welcome back to the Amsterdam ArenA as he replaces Anthony Stokes for the visitors.
Efe Ambrose hands the ball back to Thulani Serero, but luckily enough Mikael Lustig is on hand to stick his large boot in the way. Kris Commons attempts to chip Jasper Cillessen with an ambitious effort, but the ball was always rising.
Stefano Denswil is shown a yellow card for bringing down Kris Commons. The ball in is punched away by Jasper Cillessen and then Beram Kayal hammers the rebound high over the crossbar.
Kris Commons diagonal pass is handled by an Ajax player and referee Deniz Aytekin awards Celtic the free-kick after having a think about it. Commons tries to go under the wall, but it was never a problem for Jasper Cillessen.
James Forrest beats three men before falling to the ground. Referee Deniz Aytekin from Germany waves play on and Ajax counter. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson goes over Mikael Lustig's lunge, but there is nothing doing.
Since that Lasse Schone goal, Frank de Boer's side have sat back and allowed the Hoops to attack them. Anthony Stokes is tripped by Joel Veltman on halfway.
James Forrest races away from a poor challenge, but his attempted ball across to Anthony Stokes is cut out thanks to a last ditch tackle. Celtic are starting to come on strong and the game has suddenly opened up after that Ajax breakthrough.
Anthony Stokes tests Jasper Cillessen from the angle and at the other end Kolbeinn Sigthorsson earns his side a corner. Lasse Schone's inswinger is headed off the line by Emillio Izaguirre.
Lasse Schone scores a goal that has the Ajax name stamped all over it. Schone starts the move from outside the area before Thulani Serero's delightful touch sends him in and the 27-year-old Dane does the rest by crashing his shot past Fraser Forster into the far corner.
Beram Kayal is allowed so much room to run into and he obliges, but is unable to keep his shot down.
Efe Ambrose makes a charging run before releasing Anthony Stokes, but he is just caught making his run too soon. Celtic supporters are celebrating the club's 126th birthday tonight. Can they round off the night with a win for their fans? Virgil Van Dijk makes an important tackle to deny Thulani Serero an opportunity.
With Barcelona leading AC Milan 2-1 at the break at the Camp Nou, a win for Celtic would send them above the Italians. But there is still a lot of football to be played. Mikael Lustig and Nicolai Boilesen crash into each other, but the Hoops get the decision.
Celtic have won only one of their 25 Champions League away games - winning one, drawing one and losing 23. But Ajax have only ever won one of their five European encounters with Celtic, drawing one and losing three. There is everything to play for this half.
Celtic are holding Ajax to a goalless draw in their UEFA Champions League Group H clash at the Amsterdam ArenA. The best chance of the opening 45 minutes fell to Siem De Jong. A wonderful cross from the right by Ricardo Van Rhijn was met by the striker, but Fraser Forster flew across his goal to turn his header around the post. Neil Lennon's men came into the game more, but failed to create any clear cut chances. Georgios Samaras and Emillio Izaguirre have both been booked for the Hoops, while Davy Klaassen was carded for the hosts. Other than that, there hasn't been much to cheer in a half which has lacked any quality.
Celtic are holding Ajax to a goalless draw at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Emillio Izaguirre is the next player to go into referee Deniz Aytekin's book after taking Lasse Schone's feet away with a sliding challenge.
Kris Commons' corner kick is headed behind by Virgil Van Dijk. The former Groningen man climbed high just a little too early. Meanwhile, Davy Klaassen is yellow carded for high studs on Beram Kayal.
Georgios Samaras attempts one too many tricks. The Greek striker has plenty of time to pick a pass, but looks to do too much by himself. His team-mates let him know what they think.
With Kris Commons moving wide right, James Forrest has come inside. Commons catches Nicolai Boilesen and referee Deniz Aytekin hands him a final warning.
Kris Commons has come wide right with Georgios Samaras sticking to the touchline on the left as Celtic look to stretch their opponents. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson pushes Mikael Lustig in the back for a needless free-kick.
James Forrest squares up to Nicolai Boilesen, but his cross is easily collected by Jasper Cillessen. At the other end Daley Blind's cross is headed away by Virgil Van Dijk. There is a real lack of quality in the crossing so far tonight. One decent delivery could open up the scoring.
Lasse Schone smashes the ball at the wall and then his second attempt is deflected away for a corner. He takes it himself, but Celtic defend well.
Despite the Celtic pressure, Ajax remain determined to play the ball from the back. That's always been the club's philosophy ever since the days of the Dutch master Johan Cruyff. Charlie Mulgrew and Joel Veltman collide in the middle of the park and then Lasse Schone is brought down by Emillio Izaguirre in an even better position, just outside the box and in a central position.
Georgios Samaras is shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Lasse Schone. From the resulting free-kick, Stefano Denswil's effort goes through the wall, but Fraser Forster handles well.
Ricardo Van Rhijn delivers a wonderful cross from the right for Siem De Jong to direct towards goal, but Fraser Forster flies across to make a wonderful save and turn the ball around the post for a corner.
Emillio Izaguirre stops the ball reaching Lasse Schone. Goalkeeper Fraser Forster pumps the ball forward, but gets too much purchase on it and it drifts out for a goal-kick to Ajax.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon promised his side would hold a high line and squeeze the game and he has kept his promise. Both sides are struggling in possession, but the Scottish champions are starting to threaten in attacking positions.
Celtic keep the ball well for a little while until Kris Commons miscontrols the ball. There are handball cries from the crowd after Ricardo Van Rhijn's cross hits Virgil Van Dijk but referee Deniz Aytekin from Germany waves play on.
Stefano Denswil bends his left-footer around the wall, but Fraser Forster palms it behind for a corner-kick. That's the first shot in anger by the Dutch who have made a very good start as you would expect, being on home soil.
Beram Kayal brings down Thulani Serero and Ajax look to build from the back, but striker Georgios Samaras is being a nuisance by hustling and chasing down every ball. Kris Commons then brings down Daley Blind for a free-kick which is about 28 yards from goal.
Lasse Schone's cross is headed away to safety by Emillio Izaguirre, but it's been a bright, high-tempo start from the Dutch champions of the last three seasons. Referee Deniz Aytekin from Germany has a word with Fraser Forster after he put the ball in the wrong position after Celtic were handed a free-kick for an offside decision.
Ajax have set up in a 4-3-3 system with Siem De Jong, Lasse Schone and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson working in tandem. Celtic boss Neil Lennon has set up with a 4-4-1-1 formation, but he has the likes of Georgios Samaras, Kris Commons and Anthony Stokes who are all able to score goals for the Scottish champions. They are aiming to complete a Dutch double and move into second spot in Group H should Barcelona beat AC Milan at the Camp Nou.
Here we go then at the Amsterdam ArenA, which is full to capacity for this huge clash tonight. The pitch is in pristine condition. The home team are wearing their traditional red and white strip while Celtic - followed by large number of away supporters in the far corner - are in their yellow and green number. Both sets of supporters are making plenty of noise inside this atmospheric dome of a stadium. The roof has been closed and although there are an estimated 12,000 Celtic supporters who made the trip, there are officially 3,000 in the stadium.
Bojan Krkic (hamstring) and Lerin Duarte (ankle) are unavailable for Ajax but Niklas Moisander has recovered from a knee injury to take his place on the bench. Ruben Ligeon (toe) is also out. Head coach Frank de Boer will rely on the attacking threat of Siem De Jong for goals in this must-win game for the Dutch giants.
James Forrest and Anthony Stokes start for Celtic in an attacking line-up put out by manager Neil Lennon. Georgios Samaras (knee) and key man Kris Commons (hamstring) have recovered to also make the team. Mikael Lustig and Beram Kayal, who scored last month's winning goal, are also in a Hoops side which is aiming to increase their chances of qualification to the knockout phase with leaders Barcelona set to take on second place AC Milan tonight. Former Ajax winger Derk Boerrigter made his comeback from an ankle injury in the 1-1 draw at home to Dundee United on Saturday which extended their unbeaten start to the league season to 11 matches, but drops to the bench for this one. Nir Biton is suspended following his red card against the Dutch side last month.
Cillessen; Van Rhijn, Veltman, Denswil, Boilesen; Klaassen, Blind, Serero; Schone, De Jong, Sigthorsson. SUBSTITUTES: Vermeer, Moisander, Poulsen, Van der Hoorn, Fischer, Andersen, Hoesen.
Forster, Lustig, Ambrose, van Dijk, Izaguirre, Forrest, Kayal, Mulgrew, Commons, Samaras, Stokes. SUBSTITUTES: Zaluska, Fisher, Rogic, Ledley, Boerrigter, Pukki, Balde.
It's crunch time for Celtic who arrive in Amsterdam knowing that three points could hand them an opportunity of leapfrogging AC Milan into second spot and opening up the possibility of qualifying for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the second season running. Neil Lennon's side moved above Ajax into third place in Group H when they beat the Dutch giants 2-1 at home a fortnight ago. And with AC Milan having to travel to Barcelona in their fixture, the Scottish Premiership champions could end the night above the Italians, who they welcome to Glasgow on matchday five. Frank de Boer's side come into the clash having only beaten fourth-tier ASWH in the KNVB Beker in their last five outings, but will hope to avenge their Parkhead defeat and move off the bottom of the table tonight. Celtic have lost their last two European away matches, in the play-offs at Shakhter Karagandy and against Milan on matchday one. However, they can draw comfort in the fact that they emerged 3-1 victors on their last visit to Amsterdam in 2001.
Ajax head coach Frank de Boer is confident his side can produce the goods on home soil against the Scots. "I think we showed last time that we aren't a worse side than Celtic," said the Dutchman. "This time we have our fans behind us and we do have a good chance of winning - but maybe it will be even closer than at Celtic. I saw good things (in Glasgow) so I'm confident we can get three points here. Maybe for them a draw is enough so they will hold back a bit more than they did in Glasgow. We have to go for it and create chances."
Bojan Krkic (hamstring), Niklas Moisander (knee) and Lerin Duarte (ankle) are expected to be unavailable for an Ajax side which suffered their first home defeat since February. A 1-0 defeat to Vitesse Arnhem at the weekend. Ruben Ligeon (toe) sat out the Vitesse fixture and may not be risked.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon is feeling excited about the challenge of taking on Ajax in their home stadium. The Northern Irishman admits his side must be at their very best. "It's a huge game and we started working on it - the team selection and the way we'll play - as soon as Saturday's game finished," he said. "If we can play like we did in Milan, then we've got a good chance. But you can never predict these games. Ajax are a class side, very fluid with the ball and they will create chances, but I think we can create chances too. We'll have to be positive, and to get something out of the game would give us a great chance in the last two games. I think the atmosphere will be fantastic, but it's the Champions League and I don't think the players need any extra incentive to play there."
Manager Neil Lennon will be without the services of Adam Matthews (broken collarbone) and Steve Mouyokolo (Achilles) but Georgios Samaras (knee) and Kris Commons (hamstring) are expected to return. Mikael Lustig, Teemu Pukki and Beram Kayal are likely to join them in the starting line-up. Former Ajax winger Derk Boerrigter made his comeback from an ankle injury in the 1-1 draw at home to Dundee United on Saturday which extended their unbeaten start to the league season to 11 matches, but is likely to drop to the bench for this one. Nir Biton is suspended following his red card against the Dutch side last month.
The referee in charge of this encounter is Deniz Aytekin from Germany. His assistants down the touchline are Guido Kleve and Markus Hacker while the fourth official is Holger Henschel. The additional assistant officials behind the goals are Tobias Welz and Bastian Dankert. The UEFA delegate is Luca Zorzi from Switzerland and the UEFA referee observer for the night is Uno Tutk from Estonia.
