Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME REPORT
Giovanni Sio's last minute equaliser ensured Basel are still in with a shout at snatching second place in Group E. Things looked bad for Basel after a good start, when Federico Piovaccari put them into the lead with an excellent finish on 15 minutes. Basel woke up after that and attacked a little more but couldn't produce anything special. It could've been 2-0 right at the end of the first half, but Yann Sommer's amazing double save kept the difference to just one goal. The second half proved to be a drab affair and neither side looked 100 per cent determined going into challenges. Marco Streller and Valentin Stocker both had a couple of half-chances but couldn't produce anything. As the clock ticked over to the 93rd minute a cross was played into the centre and Giovanni Sio did the rest, slotting past the helpless Ciprian Tatarusanu. A draw is probably a fair result. Full time and it's Basel 1-1 Steaua Bucharest.
90' FULL TIME
The referee blows his whistle and it finishes 1-1.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Well there's the curse of the commentator. Basel are on terms and it's GIOVANNI SIO who grabs the all-important leveller. He slid in to finish off Valentin Stocker's cross.
90' ADDED TIME
There will be three added minutes here. Basel are running out of time to find an equaliser.
86' EASY SAVE
Sub David Degen, who has just come on, picks up a needless booking. After that, Steaua attack and Cristian Tanase tries his luck from the left of the goal but Yann Sommer is equal to it.
81' HALF-CHANCE
The visitors are a foot away from being through on goal for a second. Had it not been for Ivan Ivanov's important interception it could have been game over for the Swiss side.
77' SUBSTITUTE
The home side line up another change as they try to claw a way back into the game. Fabian Frei leaves the field in order to be replaced by Marcelo Diaz.
73' GOOD CHANCE
It's perhaps Basel's best chance of the night that has just gone begging. The ball is slipped in to Valentin Stocker and instead of smashing at goal from close range - where he'll likely score - he tries to find his team-mate at the far post but can only win a corner.
70' SUBSTITUTION
Giovanni Sio is on the pitch for the home side now and Matias Delgado is the man he has replaced.
66' SLOW DOWN
The game has in all honesty become quite boring now. For some reason the home side aren't that interested in getting back on terms. Steaua are now taking a more defensive approach. It's the away fans who are making all the noise.
62' SUPERB BLOCK
Fabian Frei can't believe it's not 1-1. A ball is whipped over to the far post where he's waiting, but his powerful shot is blocked well and deflected over the bar for a corner, but that causes no problems.
58' TOO STRONG
Kay Voser keeps the ball in play well and tries to get beyond Iasmin Latovlevici, but it turns out he's too strong as when shoulder barging Voser, he gives away a free kick in a dangerous position.
54' NEARLY LUCKY
Matias Delgado nearly gets very lucky as Marco Streller's tackle on a Steaua player sends the ball towards goal for Delgado to run onto. Ciprian Tatarusanu is quick off his line though and he gathers.
50' CHEEKY
Nicolae Stanciu lines up a free kick on the left wing in line with the area. He curls the ball towards the unguarded near post but can only find the side netting. Yann Sommer would have been embarrassed had he let that one slip.
46' SECOND HALF
The second period is underway and there's been one substitution. Lucian Filip has come on for Mihai Pintilii after he went off injured at the end of the first half.
45' HALF TIME REPORT
There was just one goal separating these two teams in the first half of the game. Steaua, who hadn't come here and parked the bus, pressed well and didn't give the hosts any time to breathe. The hosts had the first half-chance but Marco Streller opted to lay a team-mate off instead of turning into space. Steaua should have had a penalty on 15 minutes for a clear shove, but the ref was having none of it. They did go ahead minutes later, thanks to loanee Federico Piovaccari who grabbed his tenth goal of the season with a great finish when one-on-one. The hosts had a few chances after that but couldn't muster up anything special enough to beat Ciprian Tatarusanu. A minute before half time Yann Sommer pulled off some world class saves to keep the scores at 1-0 as he showed off his reflex skills to keep Iasmin Latovlevici out.
45' HALF TIME
It's half time here in Switzerland and it's Basel 0-1 Steaua.
44' INCREDIBLE SAVES
Yann Sommer has just made two fine reaction saves in succession as he keeps the deficit to one. He saves Lukasz Szukala's header from a free kick but the ball falls kindly to Iasmin Latovlevici who acrobatically sends the ball towards the top corner. Sommer flies into the air to get fingertips to it though.
42' WEAK EFFORT
Basel have another half-chance but can't make anything of it. Marco Streller gets the ball just inside the box and has a clear path at goal. He shoots at Ciprian Tatarusanu, but he can't generate much power on the shot and it causes no hassle for the keeper.
41' BOOKING
Alexandru Bourceanu goes into the referee's notebook for a pointless challenge from behind on the halfway line. You can see from the look on his manager's face there was absolutely no need to do that.
38' POOR FINAL THIRD
The home side's build-up play isn't bad, but whenever they get towards the final third they capitulate. The final ball has been awful each time and Ciprian Tatarusanu isn't being troubled much.
34' DELIGHTFUL
Marco Streller plays over a stunning cross to the far post and as Valentin Stocker goes to volley the ball goalwards, Iasmin Latovlevici jumps up and heads away well.
31' SLOWER
Basel have got back into this game a little more since the shock opener from Steaua. There's more desire there but they're not creating a whole load of real chances.
27' TOO FAR WIDE
Mohamed Salah breaks into the box, evading a tackle from one man before forcing himself wide while in the box. He tries to take a shot from a tight angle but he fails to slip the ball past Ciprian Tatarusanu. That's the closest the hosts have come.
24' WANT IT
Steaua definitely seem to want this game more than Basel. They're going in hard and pressing extremely well, while some of the Basel players are pulling out of 50/50 challenges.
20' GOOD AREA
Daniel Georgievski clips the back of Valentin Stocker's ankles far down the left-hand side and the hosts have a free kick which Matias Delgado lines up. It's too close to the 'keeper and the danger fizzles out.
17' GOOOAAALLL!!!
He thought he should have had a penalty two minutes ago, but FEDERICO PIOVACCARI has made it 1-0 to the visitors. A beautiful ball over the top was taken down well by him. He bears down on goal and waits for what seems like an age before hammering into the roof of the net. Great finish by the Italian.
15' PENALTY CLAIM
Federico Piovaccari can't believe he hasn't won a penalty as he goes down inside the box after Ivan Ivanov's shoulder barge. I say barge, more of a rugby tackle. It's a clear penalty but the referee hasn't given it.
11' FREE KICK
Lukasz Szukala slides in and accidentally touches the ball with his hand on the edge of the area. It's a brilliant position for the hosts and Matias Delgado curls the ball towards the corner. Ciprian Tatarusanu is scrambling across his goal but will have been relieved to see the ball just fly wide.
7' GOOD IDEA
Steaua seem to be keen on the long ball tactic. They loft one 50 yards across goal but Adrian Popa can't quite control the ball out wide. The visitors would have been in a promising position then.
3' CHANCE
A little bit of early build-up play here as the ball is played into Marco Streller who tries to lay it off. If he'd have turned, he'd have been in on goal. Lively start for the home side, as expected.
1' UNDERWAY
The hosts get us underway here in Switzerland at St. Jakob Park. They're in their red and blue stripes while Steaua are in all-white.

0' PREVIEW
Two domestic champions go head to head tonight as FC Basel of Switzerland take on Steaua Bucharest from Romania. A home win for Basel tonight could see them jump into second position which will give them great belief that they can advance to the knockout stages, with only two group games remaining. Last time out these two shared the spoils as the sides played out a 1-1 draw in Romania, allowing Steaua to pick up their only point of the campaign so far. Basel's only other three points came in a huge shock win at Stamford Bridge back when they group stage got underway in September.
0' STEPPING UP
Last season Basel reached the semi-finals of a European competition – the Europa League and were knocked out by Chelsea, incidentally. There's no reason that should Basel qualify, they won't achieve the same feat and reach the semis. In recent years there's been several shocks with APOEL FC reaching the quarter-finals and Villarreal and Schalke reaching the semis. All signs point to a home victory tonight, as their league form at St. Jakob-Park has been excellent, with four wins, one draw and just the one loss so far this season.
0' GOOD AWAY FROM HOME
In Romania, Steaua are taking the Liga I by storm, winning nine of the 11 games they've played so far and are unbeaten in the league. Their away form has been good, winning four of their fixtures away from home by a single goal, while drawing the other two. The only drop in performance away from the National Arena was the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Schalke, but no one was banking on the Romanian champions getting anything from that game.
0' KEY PLAYERS
Marco Streller has been at the club for the last six years and over that period has scored 80 goals in 169 league games, none more important than his winner against Chelsea in September. At full back is Philipp Degen, who fans may remember from his spell with Liverpool between 2008 and 2011. The main threat on the visiting side is Sampdoria loanee Federico Piovaccari, who has nine goals in all competitions this season for Roș-Albaștrii.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD
The 1-1 draw a fortnight ago was the first ever meeting between the two sides and it saw the hosts pick up their first point of the tournament. Basel were certainly more attacking in the game and made over 100 more passes more than the Steaua, with 35 per cent of those being made in the final third. Despite having four less shots than Steaua, they enjoyed the bigger share of possession with 57 per cent.
0' REFEREE
Olegario Benquerenca is the man in charge of tonight's encounter between the two sides. The Portuguese official was the man who took charge of the World Cup semi-final in 2010 between Ghana and Uruguay and sent off Luis Suarez for a late, late handball. This is only his fifth game of the season so far, after overseeing two World Cup qualifiers, one Primeira Liga game and Arsenal's victory over Marseille on matchday one.
