Chelsea vs. FC Schalke 04
Minute Commentary
90' JOB DONE
Chelsea can be very happy with three points and three goals tonight, especially after such a drab and dull game. The hosts and their visitors played out an uninspiring first half, punctuated only by a Timo Hildebrand mistake which allowed Samuel Eto'o to rob the ball from his toes and score the opener. Both sides looked a little brighter in the second period and Eto'o grabbed his and Chelsea's second with a fine effort after a set-up from Willian. The Brazilian was also involved in the third, as he gave it to Frank Lampard who set up fellow substitute Demba Ba to volley home. Three goals, and three precious points for Chelsea as they seek Champions League glory.
90' FULL TIME
The referee ends the game. Final score Chelsea 3 - 0 Schalke.
90' RUNNING THE CLOCK DOWN
Chelsea have this game won. Simple as that.
90' ADDED TIME
Four minutes are signalled by the fourth official.
88' CLASH OF HEADS
Ramires and Jermaine Jones are both down with head injuries. After the weekend's controversy with Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, any head injury has to be investigated.
86' GOOD BLOCK
Max Meyer makes his way past a tired Chelsea defence and into the box, but his ball across the face of goal is well cut out by a diving John Terry.
83' GAME, SET AND MATCH
Chelsea have all three points wrapped up here. Demba Ba knocks a long ball over to Willian, who heads it to Frank Lampard. The England man chips the ball over the top to Ba, who half-volleys it into the net. Chelsea 3 - 0 Schalke.
83' GOOOOOAAAAAALLLL
CHELSEA MAKE IT THREE!!!
81' FINAL CHELSEA CHANGE
Oscar leaves the play, with Frank Lampard coming on.
80' POOR
Ramires sends the ball through to Demba Ba, who has plenty of time and space, but the striker takes far too long and Timo Hildebrand is able to smother the shot.
78' SCHURRLE-Y NOT?
Andre Schurrle looks positively perplexed as he leaves the pitch, with Kevin De Bruyne getting on for some action.
77' CHANGES
Kevin-Prince Boateng leaves the field for Schalke, with Sead Kolasinac taking his place, whilst Demba Ba replaces Samuel Eto'o for the hosts.
76' ANOTHER BOOKING
Atsuto Uchida is the latest man in the book for a late and cynical block on Andre Schurrle.
74' WHAT THE BOSS WANTS
Willian loses the ball on the right flank but busts a gut to get back and make the tackle. Jose Mourinho applauds him from the sidelines.
72' BOOKING
Jermaine Jones clatters into Willian and picks up a yellow card. On second viewing, he could have earned himself a red there.
69' HE DESERVES AN OSCAR
Chelsea's number 11 has put in a quiet shift tonight, but the fans cheer Oscar's name. The Brazilian has the skill but seems to have added some workrate to his game, making him a much bigger threat.
67' ANOTHER SCHALKE CHANGE
Christian Fuchs looks very unhappy at being replaced, but Max Meyer does just that.
64' NOT SO FLOWING FOOTBALL
Neither side can settle into a rhythm here and the game is suffering as a result. The fans are getting frustrated too, and everyone concerned will be hoping this particular phase of play comes to an end sooner rather than later.
61' FIRST CHANGE
Julian Draxler leaves the field, with Christian Clemens taking his place.
57' A HAZARD TO HIMSELF
Jose Mourinho was asked before the match why Eden Hazard was not in the squad. He answered that the player had not trained with the team and was therefore not able to play. When pressed as to whether or not Hazard was injured, he would not answer. Let's hope the young Belgian has not got himself into any bother.
54' SUPERBLY TAKEN GOAL
If his first was fortunate, Samuel Eto'o's second goal is pure class. Oscar plays the ball over the top to Willian, who surges forward with some pace and drags the defenders with him. He plays the ball to Eto'o on the right, who controls it brilliantly with his first touch, before lashing it past Timo Hildebrand with his second. Chelsea 2 - 0 Schalke.
54' GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL
CHELSEA DOUBLE THEIR ADVANTAGE!!!
52' TOP SAVE
Schalke press forward in numbers here and it nearly pays off for them. Jermaine Jones lays it off to the onrushing Julian Draxler, whose low shot is kept out by a diving save from Petr Cech. Good pressure from the Germans.
48' GENEROUS
Julian Draxler goes down clutching his ankle and despite the fact they don't have to, Chelsea put the ball out of play. The young German receives some treatment but should be ok to continue.
46' KICK OFF
Schalke get us underway.
45' STALE HALF OF FOOTBALL
Chelsea may have the lead here but even their goal was not something to write home about. Schalke goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand dithered on the ball for far too long, allowing Samuel Eto'o to rush in and knock the ball into the empty net. Neither side has had any real chances other than that, despite Julian Draxler being very industrious for the visitors. Let's hope it gets better in the second period.
45' HALF TIME
The referee ends the half, with Chelsea leading by one goal to nil.
45' ADDED TIME
One minute is added on by the referee.
44' SURPRISE
One piece of interesting news to come out of the Chelsea camp today was the retirement of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer from international duty with Australia. With the Socceroos set to grace the World Cup next year, and Schwarzer in contention to be their number one, his decision to call it a day will come as a surprise to many.
42' ON THE BALL
Branislav Ivanovic is seeing plenty of the ball tonight, but hasn't been able to produce any kind of end product. Perhaps a change in personnel, or playing style, is needed.
39' BACK TO BASICS
Timo Hildebrand is being jeered every time the ball goes anywhere near him, but he seems to have put the mistake out of his mind and is keeping it simple.
36' STRANGE
That goal has certainly reinvigorated the Chelsea support. After his controversial goal against Cardiff, Samuel Eto'o has pressured the keeper once again and it has come off for him.
32' GOALKEEPING HOWLER
Well, even the Chelsea players almost missed this one. Timo Hildebrand took far too long over kicking the ball upfield and Samuel Eto'o slowly but surely closed him down, before taking the ball off of his toes and rolling it into the empty net. Chelsea 1 - 0 Schalke.
31' GOOOALLLLLLL!!!!
CHELSEA HAVE SCORED IN BIZARRE FASHION!!
30' NOTHING TO REPORT
The game is not really going anywhere at the moment. Neither side can make an impression on the other team's defence.
28' WASTE
Branislav Ivanovic makes an excellent run down the right and cuts the ball back into the box, but Jermaine Jones clears with ease.
25' OUCH
John Terry catches an arm in the face from Adam Szalai. The Chelsea captain is temporarily wounded, but should be ok to continue.
22' NICE TRY
Andre Schurrle cuts in from the left and unleashes a curling effort, but it bounces just wide of the far post. Not far away from the German international.
21' POOR
After a lengthy delay for some handbags in the box, Willian whips in a corner which fails to beat the first man. Not good enough.
19' FIRST BOOKING
Julian Draxler is the first man in the book, and deservedly so. The winger dragged Cesar Azpilicueta back after the defender had robbed the ball from him.
18' HOLDING FIRM
The Schalke defence are looking solid, well-organised and well-positioned. Chelsea's attacking players can't find a way through.
16' FIGHTING BACK
Chelsea are slowly but surely working their way back into this tie, but have yet to have a shot on target. Andre Schurrle and Samuel Eto'o are showing good movement, however.
12' DANGER MAN
Julian Draxler is a real talent for Schalke, and Chelsea don't look as if they know how to deal with his pace. Their defence has been rattled by him already and it could be a long night for them.
11' ALL SCHALKE
The visitors are camped in the Chelsea half and their hosts cannot find a way to stop their relentless wave of attacks. The only reason that Schalke aren't ahead is through their own wastefulness.
8' CLOSE AGAIN!
John Obi Mikel loses the ball in the middle of the pitch and Julian Draxler is on to it like a flash. Another pacey run forward, but this time he plays it out wide to Christian Fuchs. The low shot from the left does nothing to trouble Petr Cech.
6' CLOSE!
Adam Szalai drags a shot just wide of goal, but all of the plaudits here should go to Julian Draxler. The winger wins the ball in his own half and bursts forward with electric pace, before cutting back inside and laying the ball back to Szalai. Close there from the visitors.
4' CENTURION
Timo Hildebrand kept his 100th domestic clean sheet at the weekend, and will be hoping to continue that good form tonight. That said, he was beaten three times when these sides met two weeks ago, so he will need to be alert.
2' VOCAL
The Chelsea fans have turned up in their numbers tonight, and Stamford Bridge is rocking. Schalke fans are known for their vocal prowess as well, so we should be in for a good singing match tonight.
1' KICK OFF
Chelsea get us underway, kicking from right to left.
0' BREAKING SCHALKE TEAM NEWS
Dennis Aogo, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Adam Szalai all come into the side, with Christian Clemens, Jefferson Farfan and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar the men to drop out. Farfan and Huntelaar are not in the squad.
0' BREAKING CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
After saying he made '11 mistakes' at the weekend against Newcastle, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has made not 11, but six changes for tonight's tie. Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta take the defensive places of Ashley Cole and David Luiz. John Obi Mikel replaces Frank Lampard, whilst Willian, Andre Schurrle and Samuel Eto'o come in for Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and Eden Hazard.
0' POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES
Both of these sides enter this tie with six points, so a win tonight for either would secure their place at the top of the group. However, it would not guarantee their passage into the next round, as Basel currently sit on four points, meaning either two of the three sides could go through.
0' FORM GUIDE
Chelsea head into this match in better form, having won five of their last six fixtures, including a 3-0 win over Schalke two weeks ago. Schalke, on the other hand, have a slightly worse record of four wins and two losses from their last six, with the defeat to Chelsea being followed by a league defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
0' SCHALKE TEAM NEWS
Julian Draxler is a dangerous player for Schalke tonight and is expected to play on the left wing, whilst reported Liverpool target Kyriakos Papadopoulos could return from a knee problem. Former Premier League star Kevin-Prince Boateng should feature, but key men Jefferson Farfan and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar are missing with groin and knee problems respectively. Marco Hoger has his own knee injury, whilst Chinedu Obasi has a broken leg.
0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
Following their shock defeat to Newcastle at the weekend, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho looks set to make changes for this tie. Fernando Torres has a leg injury, so Samuel Eto'o looks set to start in attack. Ryan Bertrand is also injured but could be fit for the weekend, whilst Marco Van Ginkel has a long-term knee problem. The likes of Andre Schurrle, Willian and Gary Cahill could all start.
0' PREVIEW
Hello and welcome to tonight's game between Chelsea and Schalke. These teams are tied at the top of Group E and a victory tonight would go a long way to securing their way in the final 16. My name is Peter Moloney and I will be guiding you through this tie.
