Bayern München vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
They were 2-0 down after 12 minutes, but Manchester City mounted a famous comeback that fell just short of achieving the four goals needed to top Group D and gain a favourable draw in the last 16. Nevertheless, Manuel Pelligrini can be rightly delighted after seeing his side refuse to buckle after the two early setbacks, to claw themselves back into the game and, ultimately, supersede their challengers. Thomas Muller gave the German side the lead after just five minutes, breaking free from Dante's long ball to finish left-footed past Joe Hart. Mario Gotze then made it two when firing home from six yards after calamity in the City box. It seemed a case of 'how many?' for the home team, but then the visitors woke up, with the excellent James Milner bringing out a save from Neuer and then proving key for the second goal when heading Jesus Navas' cross back into the six yard box for David Silva to sweep home. Both sides battled evenly for the rest of the first half, with Bayern looking more threatening and fashioning two clear chances for Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze. The second half was all City, though, with Bayern's usually zippy attacking play going awry, and the visitors calmly growing in stature and possession. Their equaliser had a touch of fortune about it, with no one really calling for a penalty as James Milner was felled by Dante. The referee saw it differently though and pointed straight to the spot, allowing Aleksandr Kolarov to slot home. Just three minutes later and James Milner gave them the lead, driving home with his right foot after Jerome Boateng had failed to deal with Jesus Navas' low cross. The away side probed for the fourth until late in the game, when Bayern mustered something of a final charge, winning a series of corners that were comfortably dealt with by the now-resolute City defence. Ultimately the Blues qualify in second and face a tough second round draw, but the confidence they'll have gained from ending Bayern's run of 10 consecutive Champions' League wins can't be underestimated. For the home team? They'll be in shock, although you still wouldn't bet against them going all the way once again. Thank you for joining us here tonight.
That's it! Bayern Munich will still go through as group winners, but it was a terrific turnaround by Manchester City to win 3-2 here, and give the reigning Champions' League holders a real wake-up call going into the knockout rounds.
Bayern are pressing hard and have a couple of corners, both of which are dealt with by City. They're then left fuming as they commit a foul on the edge of the area.
Thiago thinks he's threaded through a wonderful ball to Thomas Muller, but the midfielder is offside, although his shot is straight at Joe Hart anyway. Manchester City then make a change as Edin Dzeko comes off for Jack Rodwell. A strange one that by Pellegrini; is he not trying to win the group? Just another goal would do it.
Bayern Munich are trying to step up the pace. Jerome Boateng has the ball in midfield and he finds Franck Ribery in space on the left. The Frenchman has three players around him and is always looking for a penalty here as he goes down. Nothing doing from the referee.
Franck Ribery is fouled for the umpteenth time, once again by Pablo Zabaleta. It's a booking for the full-back. The free-kick by Kroos from the left is punched away well by Hart under pressure.
Oh that could've been four! Dante takes an utterly terrible touch under pressure from Negredo and suddenly the forward is through on goal. He can't shake off the attentions of the desperate defender though, and his right-foot shot comes from a tight angle and is easily saved by Neuer. Could've been so much more.
Fernandinho puts in a strong challenge on Kroos. The referee allows play to continue but then respectively books the midfielder. Fair enough really, he was late.
And another. It's Pablo Zabaleta who manages to clear Bayern's latest corner with aplomb and as they break, Kroos commits a foul to stop the men in white from attacking. No booking though.
It's another corner for Bayern Munich as Pablo Zabaleta deflects Franck Ribery's cross from the left out. It's well defended again, the defensive jitters of the first half a mere memory for Manchester City at the moment. Pep Guardiola is shaking his head on the touchline. I can't blame him - what's gone wrong!?
Bayern Munich have a corner and Franck Ribery takes. It results in Philipp Lahm firing a volley with his right foot that sails wide of goal.
Manchester City are making a change. David Silva goes off after a lively display and is replaced by Alvaro Negredo.
It's not just the way they started this game that led me to believe Bayern were in for an easy night tonight. Supreme at the weekend in beating Werder Bremen 7-0, and having won 10 Champions' League games in a row, the European champions had everything going their way. However they've fallen flat and the Blues fully deserve their lead, albeit in-part thanks to a slightly fortuitous penalty. Guardiola makes another change, bringing on Xherdan Shaqiri for the largely ineffectual Mario Mandzukic. Shaqiri is a speed demon.
I didn't think I would be saying this an hour or so ago, but City are leading! Jesus Navas is onside as he breaks down the right; he puts a low ball into the area that Jerome Boateng allows to skew beyond him as he attempts to clear. It's James Milner who arrives in the area, and he finishes with a brilliant low right-footed drive that goes beyond Neuer into the bottom right corner. Amazing!
Bayern are rattled and attempt a quick reply, working the ball down the right. Franck Ribery cuts infield and finds Toni Kroos but his shot seems more likely to hit the moon than the back of the City net. A real horror slice of an effort.
Captain Aleksandr Kolarov steps up and coolly slots home a low left-footed drive to Neuer's right. Game on!
Penalty Manchester City! No one was really calling for it as James Milner is felled in the box by Dante, but the referee has no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
It's not going amazingly well for Bayern at the moment. They attempt to get back into their fluid football but a ball out to the right is beyond Franck Ribery and he admonishes his team mate. A substitution is made by Pep Guardiola: Javi Martinez is on for Mario Gotze.
Edin Dzeko does well to force a save from Manuel Neuer, after David Silva wins the ball down the right and drags the ball back to the striker from the byline. He has to angle his body to meet it 12 yards out, but Dzeko fires a stern shot goalwards that the keeper has to be alert in stopping.
It's been a congested opening to the half but Bayern find room as they break, Franck Ribery running through the midfield and finding Mario Gotze out on the left. His ball is deflected for a corner which City manage to clear. The danger isn't over though and Thomas Muller puts in an early ball from the right that Aleksandr Kolarov manages to tidy up.
Jesus Navas fancies it from 20 yards out as Fernandinho knocks the ball down to him on the edge of the Bayern area, but his shot at goal is blocked before it can gain any real traction.
Here we go again then. Bayern Munich are playing from left to right. Can Manchester City keep up their resurgence? Were Bayern just playing with them? We will find out in the next 45 minutes...
Well it could've been a lot worse for Manchester City. 2-0 down after 12 minutes and with barely a sniff of the ball, Manuel Pelligrini's decision to rest several key players ahead of the weekend's fixture at home to Arsenal looked to have backfired. Thomas Muller scored after just five minutes, finding himself free after Dante's long ball, to fire home past Joe Hart. A second followed when Mario Gotze had oceans of space within the area to slot home after City failed to clear danger. With Franck Ribery running amok, Bayern continued to threaten, but slowly and surely the English side have found a way back into this match. James Milner fired a thunderbolt that was parried by Neuer, and then was the key in the visitors' goal, stretching to reach Jesus Navas' cross from the right, to head the ball back into the danger zone where David Silva swept home. Since then it's been even stevens, with Bayern still enjoying plenty of possession, but finding themselves pegged back at times by an increasingly confident City. Jesus Navas has started to creep into the action on the right hand side, while Joleon Lescott has stepped up in defence after a poor start. Bayern still look dangerous, though, and Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller both had great chances to increase the lead before half-time. At 2-1, though, Manchester City can well feel that they've a chance of getting something out of this.
That's half-time here, as a Bayern corner comes to nothing. It looked humiliating for City after 12 minutes, but they've managed to gain some parity since.
Thomas Muller is almost in again as he manages to work a one-two with Mario Mandzukic that sets him free into the area. The ball is deflected by Demichelis out for a corner as the midfielder pulls the trigger. Could've been three.
James Milner picks up a booking for a foul on the halfway line.
Edin Dzeko puts his studs into the knee of Dante as he challenges for a high ball. The striker escapes a booking and can maybe count himself lucky there. Bayern suddenly up the tempo and, after Kroos is stopped in the box, a brilliant flick through from Franck Ribery sees Mario Gotze free in the area. Joe Hart opens up his body really well though to smother the midfielder's shot from six yards.
Dante picks up the first booking of the night, stopping Jesus Navas in his tracks down the right.
Jesus Navas has been working his way into the game more and manages to get a ball into the Bayern area that's cleared by former Blues man Jerome Boateng. Aleksandr Kolarov also has a surge forward but is stopped by the German defence. It's not looking as ominous as it once was.
It's been a better period from City but they're back under pressure again as Franck Ribery is fouled - again - by Pablo Zabaleta. Thiago then puts in a deep ball from the left that the defence manage to scramble clear. Bayern come back again though and win a corner that is also cleared. This is more resilient from City.
Another moment of madness in the City defence as Aleksandr Kolarov runs backwards with the ball in his own area before cannoning it off a Bayern Munich player. The ball is over the bar but that could have been hugely embarrassing.
...and just as I type he concedes! James Milner deserves the credit for this goal, chasing a seemingly lost ball into the area and managing to head it back across the six yard box from the left, where it's tucked away by David Silva from close range. Fightback on? A 4-2 win would allow City to win the group.
Fernandinho has a shot from range as Manchester City enjoy a rare spell in Bayern's half, but it flies over Neuer's goal. The keeper is the subject of reported transfer interest by City; he can't have seen much so far that will have made him desperate to find out flight prices to the north west of England when he gets home tonight...
Ribery's already showboating with only a quarter of the game gone! The Frenchman is down by the left byline and turns Pablo Zabaleta inside, then outside, then inside again, leaving the defender's innards in tangles no doubt. It's disappointing, then, when his weak ball is knocked out easily for a corner which then comes to nothing.
Franck Ribery is giving Manchester City a real headache here, but for once his jinking run is ended fairly, by Blues' captain Aleksandr Kolarov. The defender blots his copybook somewhat by then giving the ball away though, resulting in Toni Kroos curling a low right-footed shot at Joe Hart's goal from 25 yards, that the under-scrutiny keeper manages to hold on to.
A sharp break down the left by David Alaba sees the full-back put in a dangerous ball that's headed out for a corner by Joleon Lescott. The cross from the set-piece is cleared but only to Ribery on the edge of the box; his half volley is blocked by Lescott and City can clear.
Finally a chance for Manchester City as Fernandinho finds himself in space down the right. He holds play up and works the ball across to James Milner who fires a volley with venom from 20 yards out. It's straight at Manuel Neuer but he can only parry it away. Bayern break and Micah Richards intercepts the danger. The full-back looks injured though, he might not be long for this match.
Oh dear. 2-0. First of all Ribery manages to get a shot in from the six yard box that hits the upright as City stand about in disarray. Then, Mario Gotze finds himself in a similar position. He has so much space in the area as the ball worms its way to him that you'd think he was offside; but he isn't and slots home low past Joe Hart.
It's been more of the same from Bayern since that goal. Franck Ribery's in the running for Ballon D'Or and he looks every inch the contender thus far, leaving the City defence in a tangle. He goes down under a foul from Joleon Lescott out on the right, with the resultant cross met by the head of Dante. Joe Hart gets down low to save.
Well that didn't take long. Bayern Munich have been oppressive since the start and Dante plays a long cross field ball from inside his own half to find Thomas Muller, who springs the offside trap to fire home left-footed past Joe Hart. Not the start City wanted, but it seemed pretty inevitable unfortunately.
Joleon Lescott gives away an unnecessary corner, turning around to pass back to Joe Hart but knocking the ball past him out of play instead. Nearly early calamity from City. The corner is partially cleared but City remain under pressure.
Bayern Munich are in their home dark blue kit and get things under way, playing from right to left. Manchester City are in their change all-white kit. A tough night beckons for the English side...
So we're less than five minutes away from kick off here at the Allianz Arena; let's have a quick look at the teams. Worryingly for City fans, Manuel Pellegrini has rested players while his opposite manager has not. That means Micah Richards, Javi Garcia, James Milner and Edin Dzeko will be having to prove themselves against the likes of Franck Ribery, Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller. Bastian Schweinsteiger is still out for the Germans however. Yaya Toure is suspended for City.
Joe Hart, Micah Richards, Martin Demichelis, Joleon Lescott, Aleksandar Kolarov, Javi Garcia, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, David Silva, James Milner, Edin Dzeko. SUBSTITUTES: Costel Pantilimon, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Dedryck Boyata, Jack Rodwell, Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero.
Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Dante, David Alaba, Thiago, Thomas Muller, Mario Gotze, Toni Kroos, Franck Ribery, Mario Mandzukic. SUBSTITUTES: Tom Starke, Daniel Van Buyten, Rafinha, Diego Contento, Javi Martinez, Xherdan Shaqiri, Claudio Pizarro.
As previously mentioned, Manchester City threatened to raise Bayern's ire ahead of tonight's fixture, with reports in the British press suggesting they were preparing a £40 million swoop for the Germans' keeper Manuel Neuer. The narrative of the Blues' season reads: irresistible at home, wobbly away; but they battled to a solid 1-1 draw at Southampton at the weekend – no pushovers these days – and, like his rival coach, Manuel Pellegrini isn't expected to rest up this evening just because qualification's in the bag. If he wants to top the group, though, he's going to have to attack, and risk getting picked off by Bayern's exquisitely fast-paced counter attack.
Bayern extended their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to a whopping 40 games at the weekend and they did it in quite ridiculous style, hammering Werder Bremen 7-0 on Bremen's home turf – all this without in-form Arjen Robben who has been ruled out for six weeks with a knee injury. With a goal difference of 32 in the league and having scored 54 in all league and cup competitions, their free-scoring ability is equal to City's own liberation in front of goal this season. Will they be taking their foot off the pedal tonight, having already qualified? Not at all. "My players have to really concentrate and be aware of the situation,” Pep Guardiola said this week. “We have a very big chance to be first in the group and that is what we have to aim for. Coming second in the group is not really an option for us. It is something we want to avoid."
Welcome to the Allianz Arena this evening where Bayern Munich and Manchester City will see out their successful Champions' League group campaigns against each other. Both sides are through to the knockout stages already, with the German champions currently topping the group, and City will need to win by a surely inconceivable three goal margin, or by two goals if they score four or more, to overhaul that. The Blues will also be playing for pride though, after being humbled in the reverse fixture earlier in the autumn, when they went down 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. The game has been given some added spice following a ‘hands off!' warning from Bayern coach Josep Guardiola this week to City, after they'd reportedly made overtures to his star keeper Manuel Neuer.
