Olympiacos vs. Anderlecht
Minute Commentary
90' OLYMPIAKOS 3-1 ANDERLECHT
They knew that a win would be enough to secure their progression, and that is exactly what Olympiakos did in a drama-filled clash in Greece. They took the lead through Javier Saviola as he struck the ball hard and low past Proto in the Anderlecht goal, before Kljestan equalised moments after on the back of a wonderful team goal involving Najar and Gillet as well. The hosts started the second half well, and received a boost when the visitors were reduced to ten men following Kouyate's unfair dismissal - however Saviola's spot kick was saved. The striker made amends moments later with a neat finish from inside the six-yard box, and they soon had another penalty, as N'Sakala got himself sent off for a poor challenge inside the box. Valdimir Weiss chose to go the other way to Saviola, but it made no difference as Silvio Proto guessed right once more to intensify the home fans' nerves with Benfica also beating PSG by the same scoreline. However, it was all wrapped up in injury time as Weiss was brought down by Proto, who booked himself an early shower. Mitrovic deputised in goal for the penalty, but Dominguez slotted it in off the post to make Benfica's superb win against PSG irrelevant on the night. We have learned three things this evening - Olympiakos will play in the last 16 of this season's Champions League, the Greek side can't take penalties, and Anderlecht players collect red cards like Pokemon.
90' OLYMPIAKOS PROGRESS
That was the last action of the game as Olympiakos beat Benfica to second spot in Group C, and secure their place in the knockout phase.
90' OLYMPIAKOS 3-1 ANDERLECHT
Comic ending to the match here as the visitors are reduced to eight men, and the outfield player who deputises in goal goes the right way, but doesn't quite get close enough to stop Dominguez's penalty, which goes in off the post.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Alejandro Dominguez slots home the spot-kick to send Olympiakos through to the last 16!
90' A THIRD PENALTY!
With 30 seconds remaining Vladimir Weiss makes use of Anderlecht's lack of numbers at the back, bursting through on goal before being upended by Slivio Proto, who is promptly sent off. The Belgian side are down to eight men, and Aleksander Mitrovic has donned the keeper's shirt to try and stop this penalty!
90' SUB FOR THE HOSTS
Olympiakos eat up some time as we enter three minutes of stoppage time, with David Fuster being withdrawn for Delvin Ndinga. Surely Anderlecht can't escape with a draw with nine men?
88' ANDERLECHT DOWN TO NINE MEN
Two missed penalties and two sendings off! What is happening in Greece?! Vladimir Weiss relieves some of the pressure from his team with a lung-busting run forward that is ended by a poor tackle by Fabrice N'Sakala from behind. The defender gets a second booking, and that one definitely is a sending off.
85' GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS
The only thing that might calm Olympiakos' fans down is that their opponents have nothing to play for as we enter the final five minutes in Greece. Therefore they are not busting a gut to find an equalising goal, and it is all looking pretty comfortable for them at the moment. Still time for some drama though.....
83' ANDERLECHT SUBS
The visitors make two changes here, with Anthony Vanden Borre being replaced by Frank Acheampong, and Youri Tielemans coming on in place of Dennis Praet.
80' WELL DEFENDED
Ten minutes remain here, and the hosts are looking a tad shaky but they do well to prevent a cross from the right from reaching Dennis Praet at the back post. At this stage it is fair to say that the next goal will decide who qualifies from Group C.
78' NERVY TIMES AHEAD
That missed penalty, or rather those missed penalties, could yet prove to be crucial in Group C as Benfica lead against PSG in Portugal - if Anderlecht score, Olympiakos are out as things stand.
74' ANOTHER PROTO PENALTY SAVE
Joel Campbell runs into the box and is too quick for Fabrice N'Sakala, who brings him down to give away the spot-kick. Vladimir Weiss chooses a different side to Saviola, but Silvio Proto is once more equal to it, saving with his feet. I think I know what Michel will have his team working on on the training ground next week.....
73' ANOTHER MISSED PENALTY!
This time it is substitute Vladimir Weiss who steps up to take the spot-kick, but he misses as well! Unbelievable!
72' PENALTY FOR OLYMPIAKOS
The hosts have their second penalty kick of the night and a chance to extend their lead!
70' GOOD POSSESSION PLAY
In response to that wonderful Anderlecht chance, Olympiakos are just keeping the ball in the middle of the park at the moment. They are making Anderlecht chase shadows, and with 20 minutes left and the score at 2-1, that is all they need to do.
67' ALL ANDERLECHT
The visitors are having their best spell of the game here as Olympiakos look to shut up shop and protect what they've got. It is looking like being a dangerous tactic though, because the Belgian outfit should be level. A cross form the right misses everyone and reaches Gillet in a central position, but his first-time shot is superbly parried clear by Roberto. What a crucial piece of goalkeeping that was.
65' COULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT STORY
Just seconds before that Javier Saviola goal, Alekasander Mitrovic was close to putting the visitors in front with a surging run towards goal that was stopped by Kostas Manolas just as the Anderlecht player was about to pull the trigger from 12 yards. How big a couple of minutes that proved to be in the end.
62' SUB FOR OLYMPIAKOS
Goal scoring hero Javier Saviola is withdrawn by Michel, and Alejandro Dominguez is on in his place. He may have missed a penalty kick, but he more than made amends with that goal - the goal that could send the Greek side through to the last 16.
60' OLYMPIAKOS 2-1 ANDERLECHT
It isn't a pretty goal by any means, but Olympiakos will take it! A cross comes in from the left and it is half cleared to the edge of the box towards David Fuster. Fuster makes a mess of his shot, but it falls nicely for Saviola, who swivels and finishes into the top corner from inside the six-yard box. The Greek fans go wild - they know how big a goal that was.
58' GOOOAAALLL!!!
And they have found a way through! Javier Saviola nets his second goal of the night to re-establish his side's lead!
56' LOOKIG TOUGH FOR THE VISITORS
Anderlecht were struggling to cope with their opponents with eleven men, so you sense it will be a long 35 minutes for them now they have been reduced to ten men. Olympiakos will be throwing everything at them to try and find a way through.
55' CHANGE FOR ANDERLECHT
The visitors have been forced into making a substitution following that unjust sending off, with Bram Nuytinck coming on for Luka Milivojevic, who was also on a booking.
52' JUSTICE IS DONE
When the ball is cut back from the byline, Javier Saviola looks certain to score, but his point blank shot is brilliantly stopped on the slide by Kouyate, who is harshly given a second booking, and consequently sent off by Wolfgang Stark. The ball did hit his arm, but it was tucked into his chest and he knew nothing about it. After a brief delay, Saviola steps up, but his effort is weak and Proto tips it round the post.
50' PENALTY SAVED!
The penalty is saved by Silvio Proto, and the scores stay level in Greece!
48' PENALTY TO OLYMPIAKOS
Three minutes into the second half, and Olympiakos have a penalty!
46' SECOND HALF STARTS
The hosts get the second 45 minutes up and running. With Benfica contesting the same scoreline with PSG, this should be an intriguing half of football.
45' OLYMPIAKOS 1-1 ANDERLECHT
The home team came into this game knowing that a win would see them progress through to the last 16 stage regardless of how Benfica fared in Portugal this evening. They started in determined fashion as well, with Jose Holebas in particular looking lively down their left-hand side, but they couldn't quite find an end product to their useful build-up play. That was the story of the first half an hour in all honesty, before Javier Saviola broke the deadlock for the Greek outfit. He got on the end of Holebas' deflected shot and powered the ball beyond Proto in the Anderlecht goal to give his team an earned lead. It didn't take too long for the visitors to craft a goal of their own though, as Najar took on his man and found Gillet, who could have gone for it himself but decided to take Roberto out of the equation by squaring it to Kljestan, who tapped the ball home to make it 1-1. There was still time for one more chance as Olaitan couldn't get enough direction on Siovas' cross and the ball went a couple of inches past the far post on the stroke of half time. A frustrating first 45 minutes for Michel's men, and with Benfica grabbing a late equaliser in the first half against PSG, it could be a nervy second half for his side.
45' LEVEL AT HALF TIME
That was the last action of the first period, and we go into the break with the score reading Olympiakos 1-1 Anderlecht.
45' ONE ADDED MINUTE
There will be one minute of injury time in this first half, and Olympiakos nearly snatch the lead! Siovas' vicious cross from the right eludes Proto in the Anderlecht goal, but Michael Olaitan diverts the ball an inch or two wide of the far post with the goalkeeper stranded.
44' OUT OF NOTHING
Andy Najar had already given a warning sign to Olympiakos with his pace earlier on, but they clearly didn't heed it as he used his speed to full effect once more there to instigate the equaliser. After working so hard for their lead, Michel will be furious that they gave it away so easily.
40' OLYMPIAKOS 1-1 ANDERLECHT
The hosts were firmly in the ascendancy, but that all disappeared in one smooth break as Najar skillfully took on his man before finding Guillaume Gillet, who unselfishly squared it for Kljestan when one on one. The latter couldn't miss and he didn't, levelling matters up for Anderlecht. A goal of beauty, but where on earth was the defending?
39' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Sacha Kljestan draws the visitors level with a wonderful team goal!
37' COULD HAVE BEEN TWO
Just before his goal Saviola had an identical chance on the angle when he tried to curl the ball into the far corner with his right foot. That attempt just missed the target, but he clearly learnt from it, as he chose to power it in left-footed this time. Olympiakos are firmly in the ascendancy now.
35' OLYMPIAKOS 1-0 ANDERLECHT
The Belgian resistance has been broken just after the half-hour mark! Jose Holebas has a dig from a central position outside of the box and when his attempt deflects into the path of Saviola, the forward drills the ball across Silvio Proto and into the bottom corner. As things stand, the Greek outfit are through regardless of what Benfica do in France.
33' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Javier Saviola breaks the deadlock for Olympiakos - what a huge goal that could prove to be!
30' BREAK IN PLAY
There will be a slight halt in proceedings here as Chancel Mbemba is down on the turf with an injury. After a bit of treatment, the defender is fine to continue and the game starts again.
27' STOUT DEFENDING
They may not be threatening up top, but Anderlecht are certainly putting in a shift in from a defensive point of view. Holebas has the ball out wide for Olympiakos, but he is crowded out and has no options so he is forced to go back to his goalkeeper from the halfway line.
25' LIVELY PLAY
The Anderlecht attackers are feeding on scraps at the moment, but Andy Najar does well to evade one challenge on the touchline before eventually being stopped in his tracks by Dimitris Siovas as he homed in on goal. A warning sign there for Olympiakos - they can't be too complacent defensively tonight.
22' DESERVED CAUTION
Milivojevic picks up a yellow card for a terrible challenge on Saviola from behind. He got nowhere near the ball there and got a fair bit of the Olympiakos player, so he can't really argue with that. Proto collects the resulting free-kick easily and the hosts are left frustrated once more.
20' PLAYING IN FRONT OF THEM
The home side are definitely bossing this match in terms of possession, but Anderlecht look content to let their opponents play it around in the midfield and steal the ball back when it gets near their penalty area. They aren't exactly parking the bus, but they are looking annoyingly resolute from an Olympiakos standpoint.
17' MANAGERIAL FRUSTRATIONS
Michel is looking a tad tetchy on the touchlines as his side are struggling to manufacture any threatening attacks at the moment. How he could have done with Kostas Mitroglou for this match - he is in lethal form at present, and you would back him to score in every game he plays.
15' DIPPING FREE-KICK
After a needless foul is committed by Luka Milivojevic 30 yards from goal, Javier Saviola eyes up the free-kick and sends in a dipping effort that forces Silvio Proto into an awkward save down low to his left. The corner is eventually cleared by the visitors.
12' GETTING BACK INTO IT
The Belgian outfit have recovered from a slow opening five minutes where they let their opponents dominate and are starting to force Olympiakos back into their own half with some high pressing in the midfield. No golden opportunities at either end yet.
9' QUICK BREAK
Good stuff from Anderlecht on the break here as they get forward in numbers. A cross from the left to the edge of the area is met by Aleksander Mitrovic on the volley, but the forward's attempt flies wide of the far post.
7' PLAYING FOR IT
This time it is Michael Olaitan who bursts down the right wing, but Cheikhou Kouyate matches him for speed and the former tries to win a free-kick by hurling himself to the ground. Unsurprisingly the referee is having none of it.
4' HOLEBAS IMPRESSING
We aren't even five minutes into this one, but you can already see that Joe Holebas will be a huge player for the Greek side this evening. He once more goes on a rampaging run down the left, but his wicked delivery across goal isn't met by one of his teammates.
2' EARLY PENALTY SHOUT
Olympiakos start in bright fashion with Jose Holebas sprinting down the left wing and putting in a fine cross to the back post. Joel Campbell meets it, and feels his effort is blocked by an Anderlecht hand, but a penalty would have been a very harsh decision on the visitors.
1' KICK OFF
We are under way in Greece, with the permutations being very simple. The hosts need to equal or better Benfica's result against PSG tonight to progress.
0' FULL TEAMS
Olympiakos: Roberto, Salino, Holebas, Machado, Manolas, Siovas, Fuster, Samaris, Olaitan, Saviola, Campbell. Subs: Ndinga, Papadopolous, Dominguez, Megyeri, Yatabare, Weiss, Bong. Anderlecht: Proto, Vanden Borre, N'Sakala, Milivojevic, Kouyate, Mbemba Mangulu, Gillet, Kljestan, Mitrovic, Najar, Praet. Subs: de Zeeuw, Kaminski, Nuytinck, Cyriac, Acheampong, Tielemans, Vargas.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
For Olympiakos, talisman Kostas Mitroglou will miss tonight's match as he suffered a knee injury in the defeat to PSG in the last round of fixtures in Group C. Javier Saviola and Kostas Manolas were rested for the weekend win against Asteras Tripolis on Saturday and are likely to start this evening. Meanwhile, Matias Suarez will be absent for Anderlecht through injury, and John van den Brom will also be without the services of Massimo Bruno as the striker is suspended.
0' REF WATCH
Tonight's referee will be Germany's Wolgang Stark, with the 44-year-old taking charge of his third match in this season's competition. He hasn't been card-shy so far either, as in his previous two games he has given out seven bookings and has sent off one player. With emotions set to be running high this evening, you wouldn't back against that card average rising significantly. A lot of people will remember Stark for his controversial performance in the last 16 clash between Chelsea and Inter Milan in 2010, when John Terry was particularly frustrated with the German referee as Inter went through to the quarter-final stage. Many others will remember him solely for his name – one of the best in football if you ask me.
0' ANDERLECHT AWFUL IN EUROPE
Within the safety of domestic competition, Anderlecht are still in the hunt for trophies, as they currently sit in third place in the Belgian Pro League, four points off top spot. Last season's Belgian champions may be still in the mixer there, but this campaign's Champions League has been one to forget for John van den Brom's men as they have not won in their five group games thus far, and will finish bottom of Group C after picking up just one point, against PSG, meaning they will end the group at least three points behind third place. A positive note is that they will not be coming up against one of Europe's most sought after strikers this evening, as Kostas Mitroglou, who has been scoring goals for fun this season, will not be featuring for Olympiakos.
0' OLYMPIAKOS LOOKING TO AVOID A GREEK TRAGEDY
It hasn't been a spectacular Champions League campaign for Olympiakos thus far, but it appears as though they have done enough to progress through to the play-off stages if the form book dictates what happens on the pitch. However, with factors such as pressure and the reward of more Champions League football to take into account, the Greek side cannot rely on the form book to see them through tonight. They will have to do what they did in Belgium the last time they faced Anderlecht and win. They have won two, drawn one and lost two of their five group games thus far, and if they make it three wins out of six, Olympiakos fans will be celebrating progression from Group C.
0' PREVIEW
Across Europe tonight there are many games being contested where nothing is dependent on the result as we enter the final round of matches in the group stages of this season's Champions League. However, that is not the case this evening as Olympiakos host Anderlecht in Group C, with the former contesting for second spot with Portuguese side Benfica. The Greek outfit currently sit in second spot, above Benfica on goal difference, with the latter travelling to France to play Paris Saint-Germain, who will finish top of the group regardless of how tonight's matches go. With Jorge Jesus' men taking on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co and Olympiakos facing whipping boys Anderlecht, who have nothing to play for, you would imagine that Michel's men will feel confident of progressing through to the last 16 this evening. We will have live text commentary of this clash at 19:45.
