Galatasaray vs. Juventus
Minute Commentary
90' GALATASARAY 1 - 0 JUVENTUS
A Wesley Sneijder goal was enough to send Galatasaray through to the Champions League knockout stages in place of Juventus in one of the most remarkable games in Champions League history. It was a game of few chances, but the football itself will not be what this match is remembered for. A hail-storm forced a 16-hour overnight pause in the game, and many questions will be asked in Italy about why this game was allowed to still go ahead and why the decision was made to use a tractor to clear the snow (as it turned the playing surface into little better than a mud-bath). Juventus tried to play proper football once the game was restarted, while Galatasaray changed their tactics much more effectively, using the power of Didier Drogba to hold up long balls and supply knockdowns to his fellow attacking players. The goal when it came was exactly that - a Didier Drogba flick to Wesley Sneijder inside the area, followed by a drilled finish. There will be anger in the Juventus camp, but that won't matter to a jubilant Galatasaray. In a wintery Istanbul it finished Galatasaray 1, Juventus 0.
90' FULL-TIME
The final whistle goes to spark jubilant scenes in Istanbul. Galatasaray are through! Juventus are out!
90' OFF THE LINE!
Didier Drogba very nearly tees up Burak Yilmaz, but Giorgio Chiellini somehow manages to hack the ball off the line.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be just three minutes of added time for Juventus to try and find an equaliser.
88' YELLOW CARD
Umut Bulut pushes Carlos Tevez with an accusation that the Juventus striker moved a free-kick closer. Even if he did, that is not an acceptable reaction and the yellow card is inevitable.
87' NIGHTMARE FOR JUVENTUS!
We will never know what would have happened in this game had the weather not played a part, but this is exactly what Juventus would have feared when the game was rescheduled to take place in the snow and mud today. There's still time for another twist, but Galatasaray will use every trick in the book to try and run the clock down.
86' CHANGE FOR JUVE!
Fabio Quagliarella comes on as Juve throw everything at finding an equaliser to send them through.
85' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
A long punt forward was flicked on into the path of Wesley Sneijder. The Dutchman controlled it brilliantly and finished low through a defender's legs to find the far bottom corner. Gianluigi Buffon had absolutely no chance. Galatasaray have one foot in the knockout stages - can Juventus respond?!!
84' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Wesley Sneijder puts Galatasaray in the lead! 1-0! The upset is on!
81' JUVE THE STRONGER SIDE
Juventus are the team going through as it stands, but nevertheless are still playing all of the best football. A well-worked corner falls to Arturo Vidal, but a brave block prevents the shot making it on target.
79' CHANGE FOR GALATASARAY
Umut Bulut has scored three goals in this competition already this season, and it is little surprise to see him come on for Emmanuel Eboue in a big attacking change for the final ten minutes of the game. Just one goal will send Galatasaray through!
77' VERY RISKY DEFENDING
A clipped cross into the Galatasaray area is bizarrely headed back into the mixer. The keeper doesn't come out to claim it, an attempted volleyed clearance slices horribly back towards the goal, and there is general panic all-round, but the hosts somehow escape.
75' YELLOW CARD
Wesley Sneijder put a sneaky late hit on Paul Pogba in the build-up to that move, earning him a deserved booking.
75' DECENT RUN BY TEVEZ
Carlos Tevez is the ultimate scrappy striker and is thoroughly enjoying himself. A lightning-quick turn sends him into the box, but the final defender did well to read the danger and hack the ball clear.
73' POOR FINISH
A Juventus corner picks out the run of Leonardo Bonucci, only for the defender's shot on the volley to fly well wide. It wasn't an easy chance, but Galatasaray completely switched off and Bonucci maybe even had time to bring it down.
71' THE TENSION BUILDS
Antonio Conte is becoming increasingly animated down on the touchline as his team continue to give the ball away needlessly in the final third. The difference in styles is becoming more and more marked, with Juventus still trying to play passing football and work their way through the stretched Galatasaray defence.
67' INTO THE MIXER
A long-range free-kick is floated into the box, where a bundle of players wait in hope of finding a goal. Felipe Melo toe-pokes a shot over the bar, but the assistant had spotted a foul and the flag is raised in any case.
64' NIGHTMARE SCENARIO FOR JUVENTUS
All of their dropped points earlier in the group stage left Juventus needing a result here to progress, but with 25 minutes left they would not have wanted to be just a goal away from going out. There won't be a lack of ready-made excuses if they do depart the competition at this stage, but Antonio Conte will be more than aware that Galatasaray are growing in confidence with every passing moment and are more than capable of producing a goal.
60' DROGBA THE ORCHESTRATOR
Champions League football is one of the two very big reasons why Didier Drogba is playing in Turkey, and he's not about to let his team slip out of the competition without a fight. He's been the most influential player on the pitch since half-time, and pumps his arms in the direction of the fans in an attempt to crank up the atmosphere another notch.
57' YELLOW CARD
Didier Drogba's drilled free-kick is blocked, but the referee spotted that Carlos Tevez used an almost volleyball-style technique to stop the shot and books the Argentine.
56' SO CLOSE TO THE OPENER!
Paul Pogba dwells on the ball and attempts to get himself out of trouble with a pass that sticks in the mud. Didier Drogba pounces and closes in on the area before forcing Gianluigi Buffon into an outstanding save. The loose ball ricochets back into the path of the onrushing Burak Yilmaz, but the striker couldn't get his feet sorted out in time and the chance goes begging.
53' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Didier Drogba uses his power to keep hold of a long ball forward and tees up Wesley Sneijder. The Dutchman has time and space to line up his effort, but skews it well wide.
50' OVER THE BAR
Both teams repeatedly lose possession in a horribly scrappy set of exchanges in the centre of the park. Leonardo Bonucci decides that the best way to solve the problem is by having a punt from distance, but his effort never looked like testing Fernando Muslera.
47' EBOUE GOES DOWN
Emmanuel Eboue goes down clutching his face after a clash with Carlos Tevez, but anyone who has seen Eboue play before will know that his reaction doesn't necessarily mean he was caught. The players did collide, but there was no contact whatsoever with the Ivorian's face, so the referee starts with a drop-ball after allowing the medics to come on.
46' SECOND HALF
The game is back underway in Turkey. The orange ball is being used, the snow is still falling, and the conditions were enough to prompt a furious on-pitch rant by Antonio Conte during the interval. However, this is a massive game, so everyone would be best advised to focus on that from now until full-time.
45' HALF-TIME
The whistle goes to end a first half that started almost 16 hours ago. The break gives the groundstaff an opportunity to get on and clear the snow, but the game still remains very much in the balance. The longer it stays at 0-0 the more nervy Juventus will get.
44' STILL A HOSTILE ATMOSPHERE
Even though a lot of the fans couldn't make it back for the afternoon restart, those who have made it are making some serious noise. The referee is getting most of the criticism for a string of fouls against the home team that were perceived as soft. They weren't.
42' NOT A GREAT GAME
Being asked to play on essentially a ploughed field isn't helping the game, but in fairness it wasn't exactly a free-flowing thriller before the hail hit last night. Juventus are still playing the better of the football, while Galatasaray are looking to play with width and get the ball into the box at every opportunity.
40' HOPE FOR THE HOME TEAM
It's fair to say that Juve are a better side than Galatasaray, but in conditions where it's easier to play long than keep the ball on the ground, it is going to play into the hands of Didier Drogba and Burak Yilmaz up top for Galatasaray.
36' DEFLECTED WIDE
Juventus are still trying to keep the ball on the deck, and Carlos Tevez puts Stephan Lichtsteiner in space on an angle inside the area. The wing-back looks to pick out Fernando Llorente, but Albert Riera's block very nearly diverts the ball into the net. Relief for the hosts!
33' HERE WE GO
The game is back underway in a half-full stadium. The early signs are that the pitch is going to be a big factor, with the ball not running as well as anyone would like, while Roberto Mancini has used the pause to make a tactical switch to a back three in an attempt to match the visitors' system.
33' THE STATE OF PLAY
Here come the players, emerging out of the tunnel and into the latest snow-storm to hit Istanbul. The pitch has been cleared of snow, but is in a terrible state. The game will start with a drop-ball from where it was halted and will continue until half-time. Juve need a draw to progress, Galatasaray need a win.
33' GALATASARAY V JUVENTUS... TAKE TWO!
'Hell Freezes Over' proclaimed the papers after last night's scenes in Istanbul, but despite heavy snow since then it looks as if the game is going to continue today. The scheduled restart is in a little under an hour.
33' MATCH ABANDONED
The decision has been made to call the game off as the hail continues to fall. Seeing as the game is essentially a head-to-head for second place with no reliance on the other group game it makes sense, particularly with conditions being so difficult for the ground-staff, players and officials. We'll have to wait for an announcement on when the rescheduled game will take place, but for now that's the last of the action from Istanbul.
32' CROWD KEEP THEMSELVES WARM
The home fans are linked arm-in-arm and bouncing up and down in an attempt to stay warm. In the meantime the ground-staff are clearing the snow around the lines in a hope of getting the game back underway as quickly as possible.
32' HALT TO PROCEEDINGS
An injury to Emmanuel Eboue leads to the referee calling the players off, allowing staff the time to clear the pitch. It's not a popular decision amongst the fans, but no lines on the pitch are visible and the hail has eased enough to see an end to the problem, so it's the right call.
29' THE PRESSURE BUILDS
Juventus have stepped up a couple of gears in the last few moments, and only a string of blocks prevent long-range efforts from testing Fernando Muslera in conditions that will inevitably reduce visibility and make the ball very slippery.
26' CHANGE OF THE BALL
A break in play for a Galatasaray throw-in gives the referee the chance to make a decision and change the colour of the ball to orange. It's a bit old-school, but a sensible choice as the green of the pitch has all-but disappeared.
25' HORRIBLE CONDITIONS
The forecasters said that there would be a hail-storm in Istanbul tonight, and they were absolutely right. It's hammering down and must be very tough for the players to deal with. The pitch is beginning to turn white, so introducing an orange ball wouldn't be a bad move.
22' CLEAR GAME-PLAN
Galatasaray are defending in numbers and are trying to get in the faces of the Juventus players, but the visitors are quite clearly a superior team and are still dominating the game. Roberto Mancini has noticeably given his wide players the license to get forward on the break in the hope of sneaking a goal, and he has left Didier Drogba up top throughout in an attempt to give them someone to look for.
20' TEVEZ A LITTLE LUCKY
Carlos Tevez follows through in a pointless challenge on the by-line and catches Aurelien Chedjou in the face. The Galatasaray defender does well to not make a meal of that, but it could have been nasty.
17' YELLOW CARD
Claudio Marchisio is the first player to go into the referee's book thanks to a challenge on Emmanuel Eboue. It's hardly a shock decision, but compared to that Selcuk Inan challenge a few moments ago it looks like a tough call against the Juventus midfielder.
15' WHAT A CHANCE!
Fernando Llorente plucks the ball out of the air inside the area with a sensational touch, but has to rush his shot as the defenders close in, sending it inches wide of the post. Fernando Muslera was rooted to the ground and well-beaten if that had been on target.
15' NO BOOKING
Selcuk Inan puts in a horrible challenge as Juventus break, but the midfielder somehow escapes a booking.
11' AERIAL THREAT
Galatasaray whip in a series of crosses from both sides, but neither Didier Drogba nor Burak Yilmaz can get a meaningful effort on target. A final looping header by the Ivorian is comfortably cleared.
8' NOT THE HIGHEST QUALlTY
The game has lacked the sort of class that you'd expect from Europe's elite competition, and a horrible shanked shot by Giorgio Chiellini after a terrible free-kick cross by Carlos Tevez sums up the early stages of the match.
5' REF WAVES PLAY ON
Emmanuel Eboue gets hauled down in a central area, but the referee plays an advantage that only results in a corner. The set-piece is comfortably dealt with by Juve, and you get the feeling that Galatasaray would probably have preferred that chance to have a free-kick in that scenario.
3' STRONG START BY THE HOSTS
Galatasaray have come flying out of the blocks, hoping to knock the Italian visitors off their usual passing game. Albert Riera has been doing well down the left, but has failed to pick out either of the strikers with three early crosses.
1' KICK-OFF
The game finally gets underway, four minutes behind the other Champions League matches this evening.
0' TEAM NEWS
Both of the Galatasaray big guns start up top, with Wesley Sneijder tucked in behind. That leaves a lot of owrk for the midfield trio to get through, but it's probably worth a gamble against a Juventus side without the injured Pirlo. The visitors also go with both of their main strikers, but will be confident of controlling midfield and leaving the wide areas to their flying wing-backs as usual.
0' PREVIEW
Tonight's game in Istanbul is a straight shoot-out for second place in Group B. Real Madrid have swept all before them to reach the knockout stages as group winners, but Juventus took five games to get their first European victory of the season – seeing off Copenhagen 3-1 last time out. Galatasaray shot themselves in the foot with a defeat to the Danish minnows, leaving them needing a win tonight against the Serie A champions in order to progress. A draw would be enough for Juve.
0' PLENTY OF FIREPOWER
Roberto Mancini took over as Galatasaray manager halfway through the group stage, and the Italian will be very keen to pull off an upset against his compatriots and bring an end to his terrible personal record in the Champions League. He'll have Didier Drogba and the towering Burak Yilmaz to call upon, but will be worried about a defence that have conceded 14 in the previous five group games.
0' CLASSY VISITORS
Juve have snuck under the radar a bit this season, but remain a powerful outfit and one capable of going all the way in this competition. They have dropped just four points in Serie A this season and have a real midfield gem in the shape of Paul Pogba. Last season there were some doubts over the strength of the club's strikers, but summer signings Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente have added class and a range of tactical options up top.
