Viktoria Plzen vs. CSKA Moscow
Minute Commentary
90' FULL-TIME REPORT
Viktoria Plzen struck late to secure their place in the Europa League at the expense of opponents CSKA Moscow and give coach Pavel Vrba the ideal send-off. Needing to beat the visitors to leapfrog them into third place in their Champions League group, the Czechs had the best of the first half but lacked the incisiveness to make their dominance count on the scoreboard. It looked like they were going to be made to pay when Ahmed Musa put the Russians ahead with less than 25 minutes remaining, meaning Vrba's men needed to score twice. However, Alan Dzagoev saw red for a petulant kick out immediately after Musa's strike, renewing Czech hope, and when Daniel Kolar levelled the scores, CSKA coach Leonid Slutskiy was twitching nervously. He was right to be anxious, as Tomas Wagner volleyed in a second in the last minute of normal time, sending the home fans into raptures. There was no time for the Russians to respond, although Pontus Wernbloom became the second player to be dismissed as frustration got the better of him in the closing moments. A breathless European game and the perfect conclusion to Pavel Vrba's impressive Plzen career.
90' FULL-TIME WHISTLE
Keisuke Honda's free-kick hits the wall and the full-time whistle goes! Viktoria Plzen beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 and will advance to the Europa League.
90' WERNBLOOM SENT OFF
Vaclav Prochazka fouls Keisuke Honda 25 yards away from his own goal. David Limbersky is booked for protesting. And Pontus Wernbloom is sent off for kicking out! Madness!
90' WAGNER SCORES
They've done it! With less than ten seconds of normal time remaining, Frantisek Rajtoral's cross from deep finds Tomas Wagner at the far post. The striker controls it with his chest before volleying into the far corner of the net to surely send the Czech side into the Europa League!
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Tomas Wagner scores!
89' SET PIECE THREATS
Viktoria Plzen have looked at their most dangerous from set pieces and their 13th corner kick of the game comes via a deflection off Vyacheslav Karavayev. It's taken short, though, and the eventual cross just has too much on it for Marek Bakos to hook towards goal.
86' END-TO-END STUFF
Plzen should be ahead. Another Pavel Horvath cross causes mayhem in the visitors' area, but Tomas Horava chooses to lay the ball off with the goal gaping and the chance goes. Then, CSKA Moscow waste another chance on the counter attack as Ahmed Musa and Steven Zuber fail to link up.
83' PLZEN CHANCES
Pavel Horvath has a shot from the edge of the area deflect just wide of goal. Then, Vaclav Prochazka volleys at goal from six yards out but sees his shot blocked by Georgi Schennikov. This isn't going to end 1-1. Meanwhile, Stanislav Tecl comes off for Tomas Wagner.
81' SCHENNIKOV BOOKED
A 2-1 win, of course, would be enough for Plzen to deny CSKA a Europa League spot. With that in mind, their entire team is inside the visitors' half, hoping to make their extra man count. Georgi Schennikov goes into the book for returning to the field of play without the permission of the referee.
80' HONDA ON HIS HEELS
Oh dear. It should be over for Plzen. Ahmed Musa gets in on goal again and should pull the trigger, but instead decides to square the ball to Keisuke Honda. The Japanese international isn't expecting it, though, and can't adjust quickly enough to tap in.
78' KOLAR SCORES
It's game on. Plzen play a corner kick short, before Pavel Horvath delivers another enticing cross into the CSKA Moscow area. Daniel Kolar runs in onto it and nods in to set up a grandstand finale.
77' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Daniel Kolar scores!
76' DISALLOWED GOAL
It's in the back of the net! But it's disallowed. David Limbersky volleys towards goal after a corner kick is cleared and the ball ends up in the back of the net, but the assistant referee correctly puts his flag up. There's at least four Plzen players in an offside position.
75' LAYING SIEGE
The hosts are laying siege to the CSKA penalty area. David Limbersky crosses towards the back post where Marek Bakos heads back across goal. Stanislav Tecl moves towards the ball but Igor Akinfeev is off his line in a flash, punching away. Just after, a Frantisek Rajtoral blast from the edge of the area is deflected wide by Georgi Schennikov. CSKA bring on Steven Zuber in place of Georgi Milanov, in what is more or less a straight swap.
71' BAKOS FOR PETRZELA
Plzen have no excuse but to go for it now and they're going to bring on a striker. Marek Bakos is entering the fray, with Milan Petrzela making way. Can Plzen mount a comeback?
68' DZAGOEV SENT OFF
It's a red card! Alan Dzagoev has been sent off for CSKA! That changes the dynamics of the game again. The Russian midfielder kicks out petulantly at Vaclav Prochazka in a nothing area of the pitch and the visitors are now down to ten men for the last 25 minutes.
67' MUSA SCORES
That's Ahmed Musa's first goal since August and what a time to get it! Keisuke Honda clips a cross into the back post from the right side of the penalty area and the Nigerian forward gets on the end of it to nod in. It's Musa's first goal in 19 games.
66' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Ahmed Musa scores for CSKA!
65' TECL HEADER
Pontus Wernbloom clatters into Pavel Horvath 25 yards from the CSKA Moscow goal. Veteran midfielder Horvath takes the free-kick himself, but his excellent delivery is headed over the bar at the near post by Stanislav Tecl. That's the best chance that Plzen have had since the interval.
62' KOZACIK SPILLS
Keisuke Honda wins a free-kick for CSKA which is taken quickly to Alan Dzagoev. From 25 yards out, he drills low towards goal. Goalkeeper Matus Kozacik spills the ball but Ahmed Musa isn't on the scene quickly enough to take advantage of the Slovakian's poor handling.
60' KOVARIK FOR DURIS
Plzen make their first change, bringing on Jan Kovarik for Michal Duris in a straight swap down the Czech side's left wing. With a little over half an hour to play, can Kovarik make the difference for Pavel Vrba's men?
58' CSKA THREATENING
Georgi Milanov slides in Rasmus Elm on the right-hand side of the Plzen penalty area. The Bulgarian looks for the return pass but Elm's pull-back lacks accuracy and is cleared by Marian Cisovsky. Just after, Ahmed Musa wriggles free of his marker to try and get a shot away from the edge of the area but Cisovsky is there again to put in a robust block tackle.
55' HONDA INFLUENCE
Keisuke Honda, in his last game for CSKA before moving to Milan in January, has an immediate impact, linking well with Alan Dzagoev to nearly create an opening for Ahmed Musa. Just after, Musa spins well 20 yards from goal but blazes over the bar. The Russians already look more impressive with Honda on the pitch.
53' HONDA FOR TOSIC
Frantisek Rajtoral robs Ahmed Musa inside the CSKA defensive third, but his through ball towards Stanislav Tecl is picked off by Sergei Ignashevich. That's a let-off for Musa, who would be wise not to dawdle on the ball by his own penalty area. Meanwhile, the Russians make their first change, bringing on Keisuke Honda with Zoran Tosic going off.
50' DZAGOEV POACHES
Alan Dzagoev latches onto a loose bouncing ball inside the Plzen final third and forces a shot at goal from a tough angle. Luckily for Plzen, Matus Kozacik blocks the effort and gathers the ball at the second attempt. Ahmed Musa, who would have been ready to bundle in on the rebound, had slipped on the edge of the box.
48' RAJTORAL EFFORT
Plzen start the second half well as Frantisek Rajtoral marauds forward from right-back and forces Igor Akinfeev to tip the ball behind for a corner kick. The hosts can't make anything of the set piece, though.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
The teams are back out on the Doosan Arena pitch and we're ready to start the second half. Neither Viktoria Plzen or CSKA Moscow have made any alterations to their teams over the interval, so the two line-ups are exactly what they were at the beginning of the match. Can CSKA hang on to secure their Europa League spot or will Plzen make the breakthrough?
45' HALF-TIME REPORT
CSKA Moscow are 45 minutes away from a place in the Europa League after successfully negotiating the first half against Viktoria Plzen at the Doosan Arena. With Plzen needing a win to leapfrog the Russians into third place in the group, they predictably took the initiative in the game, with Stanislav Tecl and Daniel Kolar both looking particularly bright as the hosts look to give coach Pavel Vrba the perfect send-off in his last game. But they've been unable to find the opener and the visitors, needing only a draw, have been dangerous on the break. Indeed, Ahmed Musa should have scored when through one-on-one with Matus Kozacik, but his finish lacked accuracy. Plzen, perhaps, should feel grateful that they still have 11 men on the field after Vaclav Prochazka appeared to pull Musa down inside his own penalty area. They'll need to retain a full complement of players if they're to gain the three points they need tonight.
45' HALF-TIME WHISTLE
And that's half-time at the Doosan Arena. Viktoria Plzen and CSKA Moscow remain inseparable at 0-0 at the interval.
42' MUSA AND LIMBERSKY CLASH
There's a bit of aggression out on the pitch at the moment, as Ahmed Musa squares up to David Limbersky after the left-back put in a particularly fierce challenge to prevent a counter attack. Neither player is cautioned though, the referee preferring to defuse the situation with a telling-off for both men.
40' PROCHAZKA LET-OFF
Vaclav Prochazka is a very lucky man. Zoran Tosic tries to thread Ahmed Musa in behind the Plzen defence again and the centre back tugs at the Nigerian, sending him to the turf inside the area. The referee isn't interested in penalising the Plzen man, though, and he's given a reprieve. That could be a big moment in the game.
37' SLIGHT LULL
There's a slight lull to proceedings at the moment, with both teams having one eye on getting into the half-time interval without being behind. CSKA have come into the game more and more as the half has worn on, but they seem to lack the incision to break Plzen down unless they utilise the pace of Ahmed Musa.
34' MUSA DENIED
Oh dear. That is a striker lacking confidence. Ahmed Musa gets in one-on-one after a failed offside trap by Viktoria Plzen. The Nigerian steadies himself before trying to beat Matus Kozacik at his near post but the goalkeeper spreads himself well to block. Just after, Musa breaks the offside trap again. This time, he tries to pull the ball back but the Plzen defence clear.
31' LIMBERSKY VOLLEY
Viktoria Plzen nearly catch CSKA Moscow out with a clever corner routine, as Pavel Horvath picks out David Limbersky on the far corner of the penalty area. The left-back strikes a right-footed volley first time, but is leaning back and balloons his effort high over the bar.
29' IGNASHEVICH HESITANT
Sergei Ignashevich has Igor Akinfeev to thank there. The Russian defender wants too much time on the ball and is robbed by the pressing Plzen attackers. The ball falls to Stanislav Tecl on the edge of the penalty area and his low bending effort is tipped wide by the Russian goalkeeper.
26' PROCHAZKA BOOKED
There's trouble here. Alan Dzagoev chips the ball over the top of the Plzen defence for Ahmed Musa to run onto. Vaclav Prochazka trips the forward, however, and earns himself a yellow card. Had the pass been more precise, the card could have been a different colour.
23' DURIS BRIGHT
Pavel Vrba will be encouraged by his side's start to this game and they nearly create another opening. Michal Duris turns Vyacheslav Karavayev with ease before pulling the ball back from the byline. Stanislav Tecl is in the middle but he can't prod the ball towards goal as Sergei Ignashevich clears.
20' PLZEN PRESSURE
Alexei Berezutski gives away a cheap free-kick on the right edge of his own penalty area, after pushing Daniel Kolar. Pavel Horvath's outswinging free-kick nearly picks out Tomas Horava but is just too high for the midfielder. A corner kick soon follows and Marian Cisovsky nearly gets his head to a fantastic delivery but makes his run too late.
17' MUSA WASTE
That was a waste from Ahmed Musa. CSKA counter attack again with the pace of Musa and he has support to his right from Alan Dzagoev. The Russian playmaker gets into a good position in the middle but Musa decides to smash at goal from an acute angle, the ball rustling into the side netting.
14' COMPACT PLZEN
Viktoria Plzen are defending very compactly in the opening stages and limiting the visitors solely to shots from range. Alan Dzagoev, starting his first game for CSKA in three months, will be key to breaking down that backline but he's barely touched the ball in the opening quarter of an hour.
12' KOLAR SLASHES
That was a decent effort from Daniel Kolar. The ball is clipped inside to the attacking midfielder on the edge of the penalty area and he slashes at the ball, just sending it wide of the near post.
10' KOLAR LURKING
Young full-back Vyacheslav Karavayev is making his Champions League debut for CSKA Moscow tonight and Plzen seem to be targeting the right-sided defender by focusing their attacks down the left wing. Tomas Horava gets his head to a Milan Petrzela cross but Igor Akinfeev gathers the ball before Daniel Kolar can pounce.
7' CSKA SET FOR COUNTER
As you would expect with them needing a win this evening, Plzen have started this game positively. CSKA are set up to counter attack this evening, though, and Ahmed Musa's pace nearly presents them with an opportunity on the break. However the Nigerian forward is forced wide and the hosts regroup.
4' HESITANT PLZEN
That was a vital challenge by Georgi Milanov! Tomas Horava dances down the left and chips a cross into the penalty area, where captain Pavel Horvath is completely unmarked. He takes his time to get a shot away though, and Milanov tracks back to disrupt the Czech midfielder and scramble clear.
3' TOSIC OVER
We should expect goals in this game, as these two teams have the worst defensive records in the Champions League this year. Viktoria Plzen have conceded 16 goals and CSKA 15, and it's the hosts who go close to adding to that total, as Zoran Tosic shoots over from the edge of the area for the visitors.
1' WE'RE OFF
The two teams are out on the pitch and the sound of referee Damir Skomina's whistle gets us up and running at the Doosan Arena. Viktoria Plzen are in their blue and red home kit, with visitors CSKA in their white change colours. Can the hosts leapfrog the visitors and get a place in the Europa League or will the Russians get the point they need to ensure continental football after Christmas?
0' STAY TUNED
Stay tuned for text updates from the Doosan Arena in Plzen. Bradley King will be with you for kick-off, which is at 7.45pm.
0' REF WATCH
Damir Skomina of Slovenia is tonight's referee at the Doosan Arena in Plzen. The 37-year-old had a busy weekend, dishing out six yellow cards and two red ones as Slovenian league leaders Maribor lost a seven-goal thriller at home to Zavrc. He'll be assisted tonight by Primoz Arhar and Bojan Ul, while Robert Vukan is the fourth official.
0' THE FORM BOOK
In recent weeks, Viktoria Plzen have continued to put the pressure on the Czech table-toppers Sparta Prague, winning each of their last five domestic matches. They sit five points behind the league leaders after a 2-0 win over Pribram in Pavel Vrba's last home league game on Sunday. CSKA, on the other hand, are in patchier form. Having won four straight league matches in late October and November, their ascent up the Russian table has hit trouble after a 0-0 draw with Rostov was followed up by a defeat at Krasnodar on Friday. They're fifth in the Russian Premier League, six points behind leaders Zenit.
0' SLUTSKY: IT WILL NOT BE EASY
CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutsky said: "A tough match awaits. Plzeň presented themselves in a very good light and played very well in the first game against us, so we know it will not be easy. But our aim is to get a result that will take us into the Europa League. It is one of two prestigious European competitions and a priority for us. We are very motivated to get the right result."
0' VRBA: OPENING GOAL IS KEY
Viktoria Plzen coach Pavel Vrba said: "I expect that CSKA will come out with the home result in mind and focus on watchful defence in a tactical lineup like they used against Bayern and Manchester City, relying on fast counterattacks. We have to avoid conceding the opening goal and pay attention to the exceptionally fast-footed CSKA players. This will be key to our success. We could become the first Czech team to qualify for the spring part of European competition for three successive years, but extending our campaign is a great motivation in itself."
0' CSKA MOSCOW TEAM NEWS
CSKA Moscow are not so fortunate on the injury front and they will be without several key players for the vital trip west. Key striker Seydou Doumbia hasn't travelled with the squad, while experienced defender Vasili Berezutski is ruled out with a knee injury. Mario Fernandes and Aleksandrs Cauna are also unavailable, meaning Leonid Slutsky needs to shuffle his pack to get the result they need for Europa League qualification. Ahmed Musa will lead the line while Keisuke Honda, in his last appaearance before moving to Milan in January, will be expected to provide the creative spark just behind him.
0' VIKTORIA PLZEN TEAM NEWS
Viktoria Plzen will wave goodbye to their coach Pavel Vrba after this match after he agreed a deal to take charge of the Czech Republic national side. He'll be keen to sign off in the best possible fashion, and is well placed to do so as he has a fully fit and available squad to choose from this evening. Stanislav Tecl is Plzen's top scorer, with six goals in the domestic league this season, and he will lead the line as his team look to sneak into third place.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
CSKA Moscow travel to the Czech Republic for their final group game in the Champions League, knowing that a defeat could see hosts Viktoria Plzen sneak a Europa League spot ahead of them. Drawn in a tough group along with European juggernauts Bayern Munich and Manchester City, both teams have endured difficult campaigns. Having each lost both of their fixtures with Group D's eventual qualifiers, CSKA's 3-2 home win over Pavel Vrba's men puts the Russians in pole position to secure third spot. Plzen must, therefore, record a better victory on Tuesday evening in order to leapfrog Leonid Slutsky's side due to a superior head-to-head record. Their Champions League participation may almost be over, but the consolation prize of the Europa League would have been the minimum aim for both of these teams back in August.
