Barcelona vs. Celtic
Minute Commentary
Celtic endured a humbling defeat in the Camp Nou as Barcelona secured top spot in Group H with a stunning 6-1 demolition of Neil Lennon's men. The Catalan giants were seriously under-strength, with Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta all missing but it turned out to be of little consequence. Gerard Pique got the rout started after just six minutes, before Pedro and Neymar strikes made the scoreline look more accurate at the interval. The Brazilian superstar followed up his first ever Champions League goal with a superb strike just after the break before driving in a third to confirm a 13-minute hat-trick before the hour mark. The Scottish champions rightly feared being on the end of a rugby score but Gerardo Martino's men found the net just once more, through Cristian Tello's deflected effort. Celtic got a late consolation goal for their fans to celebrate when Giorgios Samaras leaped high to nod in, but it was a dire night for the Glaswegians who must now turn their attentions back to domestic duties.
And that's full-time at the Camp Nou. Barcelona beat Celtic 6-1.
It's another chance for Celtic! Giorgios Samaras times his run well to go in one-on-one with Jose Manuel Pinto. He rounds the goalkeeper but Gerard Pique is back to clear on the goal line. Barcelona getting sloppy late on.
Celtic nearly get a second straight away as Kris Commons is allowed to dribble through the middle of the pitch and strike at goal. Jose Manuel Pinto blocks the shot, though, and Commons can't get to the rebound before Javier Mascherano.
Celtic have a succession of free-kicks inside the final third and they make the last of them count. Charlie Mulgrew's inswinging free-kick picks out Giorgios Samaras in the middle and he leaps high to nod in a consolation.
It's in! Giorgios Samaras scores!
Barcelona come forward again with such fluidity but the one-touch move comes to an end when Adriano's cross is blocked by the chest of Mikael Lustig. The hosts look keen to add more to their total, though.
Jean Marie Dongou almost uses his pace to great effect to latch onto a loose pass in the Celtic backline but Virgil Van Dijk recovers to slide in and win back possession.
Barcelona make their final change, and there's a standing ovation for Neymar, who is making way. Young striker Jean Marie Dongou is on in his place for the final ten minutes and will be keen to get on the score sheet himself. Celtic also make a change, bringing off Adam Matthews for Anthony Stokes.
Celtic have a rare spell of possession and their every touch is cheered by the large contingent of Scottish supporters who have made the trip to Catalonia. They haven't had much to cheer this evening.
The chances keep coming. Pedro beats the offside trap and crosses low towards Neymar in the middle of the penalty box. He attempts an outrageous back-heeled attempt whilst spinning but Efe Ambrose gets himself between the Brazilian and the goal.
And that was nearly the seventh. Barcelona win possession back from Virgil Van Dijk inside the final third and Neymar jinks past Mikael Lustig before driving low at goal from just inside the area. It's straight at Fraser Forster. though, and the goalkeeper can parry the ball away.
It's six. Adriano gets forward down the left wing and pulls the ball back for Cristian Tello, who steadies himself before shooting at goal. The ball deflects off Virgil Van Dijk and into the opposite corner towards which Fraser Forster had dived. Meanwhile, Alex Song enters the fray, with Sergio Busquets going off for the hosts.
It's in! Cristian Tello scores!
Adam Matthews is going into the book for Celtic and it's a really harsh decision. The defender goes on a marauding run into the Barcelona penalty area and falls over under a challenge from Gerard Pique. The referee judges it as a dive. Meanwhile, the visitors bring on Kris Commons in place of Nir Biton.
This is a dismal night for Celtic and it's now likely to go down in the history books. Celtic's heaviest ever European defeat before tonight was a 5-0 defeat to Artmedia Bratislava in the 2005/06 season. With 25 minutes still to go, surely that will be surpassed this evening.
Celtic finally have a shot of note, as Charlie Mulgrew puts his foot through the ball from long range. It's miles off target though. At the other end, Neymar beats the offside trap and rounds the goalkeeper but he and Pedro get in the way of each other. Pedro eventually shoots but the ball goes way over.
Barcelona are making their first substitution. Alexis Sanchez is coming off, with Cristian Tello replacing him in the line-up as Gerardo Martino looks to turn his attention to future matches.
This is far too easy. Neymar receives the ball inside the area and eases his way past Efe Ambrose before shooting at goal from a tough angle. Adam Matthews is back on the goal line but he can only direct the ball into the back of the net. It will go down as Neymar's goal as his shot was on target - his first Champions League hat-trick. And there could be more goals to come.
It's in! And it's Neymar again!
Celtic are looking absolutely demoralised out there and they still have another half an hour of defending to do against this Barcelona team. Should they manage to keep the score at 4-0, that would surely be an achievement in itself. The Catalans not scoring again, though, seems highly unlikely.
Barcelona have slowed the tempo of their passing since scoring the fourth goal but they still manage to create a good opportunity as Neymar nearly rounds the advancing Fraser Forster inside the penalty area. Pedro retrieves the ball but Forster opts to stand up to the winger on the right side of the Celtic area. He can't make the most of the English stopper being off his line, though.
Efe Ambrose chops down Neymar 30 yards from, and central to, his own goal. Xavi takes the resulting free-kick and forces Fraser Forster to dive to his right and punch away. That was destined for the back of the net.
It's another fantastic team move by Barcelona, but finished in fantastic fashion by Neymar. The hosts quicken their passing on the edge of the box, Xavi slipping the ball into the Brazilian forward who takes it in his stride before finishing high into the top left-hand corner from just inside the penalty area. Clinical.
It's in! Neymar scores!
That half-time substitution by Celtic seems to hint that this second period will be a case of damage limitation as far as they're concerned. Indeed, the second half has started how the first ended, with Barcelona keeping possession at a good tempo inside the visitors' half.
The two teams are back out on the pitch and we're back underway at the Camp Nou. Neil Lennon has made a change, bringing on Charlie Mulgrew for Teemu Pukki. Can Celtic put the brakes on Barcelona in the second half or will the Catalans continue to run riot?
Barcelona have enjoyed near total domination over Celtic during the first half at the Camp Nou, leading 3-0 at the break. Despite missing the likes of Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas, the Catalan giants took no time to get into their stride as they looked to secure top spot in Group H. It took only seven minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock, Gerard Pique scuffing the ball into the roof of the net after a mistake from Efe Ambrose. Despite controlling the game, it took until the 40th minute for the Celtic defence to be breached again, as Neymar cut the ball back for Pedro to drive in at the near post. And the Brazilian got in on the act himself on the stroke of half-time, tapping in after a wonderful team move. The Scottish champions have been completely outplayed, and should focus their efforts on keeping the score down in the second period.
And that's half-time at the Camp Nou. Barcelona lead Celtic 3-0 at the interval.
Neymar has his first Champions League goal and he's unlikely to get an easier one. After a long period of possession, Xavi picks out the run of Martin Montoya down the right side and the full-back squares the ball across for Neymar to tap in. A great goal.
It's 3-0! And what a goal by Neymar!
Sergi Roberto goes into the book for Barcelona after a scuffle with Nir Biton inside the Celtic half. Scott Brown also gets cautioned for his involvement in the incident.
Barcelona double their lead through Pedro. A precise pass through the middle of the pitch finds Neymar, who goes around Efe Ambrose on the outside before working half a yard to be able to pull the ball back. Pedro had made an excellent run off Mikael Lustig and drills in low at the near post.
It's in! Pedro scores!
Celtic nearly work an opening on the break as Giorgios Samaras breaks away but Gerard Pique tracks back and slides in to concede a corner. Nir Biton has a vicious drive from 30 yards after Barcelona clear the resulting set piece but Javier Mascherano leaps well to block it with his back.
Neymar has burst into action in the past few minutes, terrorising Mikael Lustig on the right side of the Celtic defence with a series of twists and turns. Just after, Xavi plays in the Brazilian in the middle of the penalty area but his strike is blocked again by the dogged Bhoys defence.
When Celtic do have possession in the Barcelona half, they're relinquishing the ball cheaply. Giorgios Samaras, in particular, has been wasteful so far, losing possession on a number of occasions. Most recently, he bundles into Martin Montoya, giving away a free-kick.
Gerard Pique could have had another. A deep Xavi free-kick finds the defender at the back post and he shrugs off Mikael Lustig before poking towards goal. His effort is blocked by Efe Ambrose, though.
Barcelona want a penalty with Alexis Sanchez down on the deck inside the area. Xavi's defence-splitting pass found the diagonal run of the Chilean but Adam Matthews appeared to slide in and catch him. Referee Sergey Karasev says the defender won the ball, though.
Alexis Sanchez's fancy footwork is too much for Adam Matthews, who allows the Chilean to jink his way past him on the right side of the penalty area. His cutback finds Neymar on the penalty spot but his side-footed finish is blocked by Efe Ambrose.
Neymar has been well-marshalled by Celtic in the opening 20 minutes, with the Brazilian barely having a touch of the ball of note. His latest possession is ended when Scott Brown clatters into him fairly 20 yards from the Celtic goal. The forward appears to be limping a little.
There's no relief for Celtic as Barcelona continue to try and make incisions in their defence. Alexis Sanchez and Pedro swap passes on the edge of the penalty area, nearly allowing the latter to shoot at goal, but Virgil Van Dijk is on the scene again to halt the home side's progress.
Celtic have struggled to create anything of note in the opening quarter of an hour, with Teemu Pukki looking extremely isolated up front. The trouble is when the visitors do try and push forward, Barcelona have the pace to break. Pedro nearly makes that speed count when he breaks away and crosses for Neymar, but Efe Ambrose clears.
Barcelona look in ominous mood. Martin Montoya cuts inside on the right side of the penalty area before lashing at goal with his left foot. Luckily for Celtic, Adam Matthews manages to half-block the shot, which squirms wide of the post - thankfully for stranded goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
What a disastrous start for Celtic. Alexis Sanchez hesitates to get a shot away inside the area and his eventual effort is saved by Fraser Forster. Efe Ambrose fails to clear the rebound, allowing Gerard Pique to eventually finish scruffily from six yards out. It could be a long night for the visitors.
It's in! Gerard Pique scores!
Barcelona have another half chance when Pedro plays a reverse pass in towards Neymar. But Virgil Van Dijk is on the scene again as he helps the ball out for a corner kick.
That's a let-off for Adam Matthews, who gives the ball the way inside his own defensive third. That allows Xavi the chance to run at the Celtic defence inside the penalty area but Virgil Van Dijk intervenes before he can get a shot away, playing the ball off the midfielder and out for a goal kick.
Barcelona may be seriously under-strength this evening but, as you would expect, they have still dominated the early moments at the Camp Nou. Celtic have barely touched the ball in the opening exchanges and go close to taking the lead when Neymar comes close to nodding in Xavi's cross. Mikael Lustig does enough to nudge the Brazilian out of the way, though.
Barcelona and Celtic are out on the Camp Nou pitch and referee Sergey Karasev blows his whistle to get the game underway. Both teams wear their famous colours, with the hosts in red and blue with the visitors in green and white. Can the La Liga champions get the point they need to secure top spot in Group H or will Celtic stun the home side?
Stay tuned for text updates from tonight's fixture at the Camp Nou. Bradley King will keep you up-to-date with what's happening in the 7.45pm kick-off.
Sergey Karasev of Russia is tonight's referee at the Camp Nou. The 34-year-old has had two other Champions League assignments this season, handing out six yellow cards in total. He'll be assisted by fellow countrymen Tikhon Kalugin and Anton Averianov, while Dmitriy Borisovich is the fourth official.
After a lightning-quick start to the defence of their La Liga crown, Barcelona have wobbled somewhat in recent weeks. The 2-1 defeat to Ajax was their first defeat in any competition since last season's Champions League semi-final second leg loss to Bayern Munich. The Catalan giants followed up that loss with a defeat to Athletic Bilbao, as Atletico Madrid went level on points with them at the top of the table. Celtic have been in outstanding form domestically, with Friday's 5-0 win at Motherwell their 18th Scottish Premier League game without defeat.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon said: "We will need a lot of discipline and tactical prowess. We will need to be brave with the ball. Yet even in doing all those things, it still might not be enough to win against Barça. We have had some good moments this term. We are not going to treat Neymar any differently to the rest of Barcelona's players. These types of games represent huge occasions for us and the truth is that I am really eager for this game to start as soon as possible. There is a lot of respect between both clubs. They are two institutions that get along very well."
Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said: "The game remains very important as we want to finish top of the group. We need to win on Wednesday and put in a good performance. Distributing the ball with pace and precision is vital because we won't be afforded much space. We must also be effective in applying pressure when we lose possession to avoid getting hit on the counterattack."
Celtic will be without left-sided defender Emilio Izaguirre, who has to serve a one-match suspension. The Bhoys are able to welcome back Scott Brown and Nir Biton from bans, though, both of whom were sent off earlier in the Champions League campaign. Winger James Forrest is a doubt with a hamstring strain, while Beram Kayal has been ruled out until next year with a broken foot. Defensive duo Adam Matthews and Steven Mouyokolo remain sidelined with a broken collarbone and Achilles problem, respectively. Giorgios Samaras missed the win over Motherwell with a virus but could return.
Gerardo Martino has a host of injury problems to deal with ahead of tonight's game, the most notable one being Lionel Messi, who remains sidelined with a hamstring problem which has already kept him out for a month. First choice goalkeeper Victor Valdes and full-back Dani Alves are also missing with a calf injuries, while the absence of Jonathan Dos Santos, Ibrahim Afellay and Isaac Cuenca means that Barca lack the depth to change their team around too much. Jordi Alba made his first start in three months against Cartagena on Friday but it's unclear whether he will be risked again tonight. Alexis Sanchez is available after serving a one-match European ban but Cesc Fabregas is suspended.
Barcelona only need a point to guarantee top spot in Group H as they welcome rock-bottom Celtic to the Camp Nou. Gerardo Martino's men are two points ahead of second-placed Milan and can only be overtaken by their nearest rivals if they beat Ajax and the La Liga champions lose to Neil Lennon's side. On the other hand, Celtic have only pride to play for, with four defeats from their first five matches guaranteeing that the Scots will prop up the group, even before the final game. But Celtic often rise to the occasion on big European nights - as their hosts tonight will confirm - meaning Barcelona should take the visitors too lightly at their own peril.
