Bayer Leverkusen vs. Paris SG
Minute Commentary
90' PSG HALFWAY HOME
Paris St-Germain have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a comfortable 4-0 victory against 10-man Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena. Talismanic forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a brace after Blaise Matuidi's early opener and Yohan Cabaye added the icing on the cake with a late effort. The French champions broke the deadlock after just three minutes when Matuidi collected Marco Verratti's through ball before calmly finishing under Bernd Leno with ease. The visitors added a second after 39 minutes when defender Emir Spahic dragged down Ezequiel Lavezzi in the area and referee Viktor Kassai pointed to the spot. Ibrahimovic stepped up to fire his right-footer into corner. Two minutes later the Swede, who was having a relatively quiet game until his successful spot-kick, struck a firecracker of a left-foot shot into the top corner to virtually put the tie to bed. With that effort he took his tally to 35 goals in his last 28 appearances for club and country as well as taking his overall tally in the Champions League to 10 goals, making him the competition's leading scorer - now one ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo. Sami Hyypia's side went down to 10-men after an hour when Emir Spahic was shown his second yellow card. And Les Parisiens put the icing on the cake with a fourth goal just before the end after a well-worked move. Maxwell's cross fell to Lucas who spotted an unmarked Cabaye behind him and the January signing from Newcastle struck his first-time right-foot effort into the roof of the net. PSG will host the return leg at Parc des Princes on March 12 and will be confident of reaching the last eight because no side has ever come back from a four-goal deficit to win a Champions League tie.
90' FULL-TIME
Paris St-Germain hammer Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at the BayArena.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
We're into TWO added minutes at the BayArena.
88' CABAYE ADDS A FOURTH
Zlatan Ibrahimovic sets Maxwell away down the left and his cross falls to Lucas Moura who spots an unmarked Yohan Cabaye behind him. The former Newcastle playmaker cleverly fires his first-time right-foot effort into the roof of the net before celebrating his first goal for his new club.
88' GOOOAAALLL!!!
YOHAN CABAYE
87' FINE SAVE
Zlatan Ibrahimovic excellent pass finds substitute Javier Pastore free in the box, but his effort is well blocked thanks to some brave goalkeeping by Bernd Leno.
84' ZLATAN MAY NOT BE RISKED
Leverkusen need no reminding of their last foray into the knockout rounds two years ago when they lost 3-1 at home to Barcelona, only to be humiliated 7-1 in Spain when Lionel Messi hit a record five goals. It's unlikely Paris St-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc will risk Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the second leg on March 12th though.
79' CHASING SHADOWS
The big-spending Parisians are happily keeping possession and frustrating their opponents as the clock ticks down.
77' BIG CHANCE
Stefan Reinartz's free header from about 10 yards falls straight into the grateful hands of PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.
75' PASTORE COMES ON
Javier Pastore comes on for Ezequiel Lavezzi as one Argentinian replaces another.
74' OFF THE BALL INCIDENT
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lars Bender clash off the ball although referee Viktor Kassai fails to see the incident and play continues. It looked to be half a dozen of one six of the other with both players guilty.
71' NO FEAR IN BRANDT
Paris St-Germain have enjoyed 53 per cent of the possession in this game but they've looked most threatening in front of goal. Julian Brandt is playing without fear for the Bundesliga outfit and is going at defenders as he tries to create a consolation goal.
68' CABAYE COMES ON
Former Newcastle playmaker Yohan Cabaye makes his entrance in place of goalscorer Blaise Matuidi.
67' NO GOAL
Blaise Matuidi's curler hits Philipp Wollscheid and flies into the back of the net but the assistant referee has his flag up on the near side because Ezequiel Lavezzi is adjudged to be standing in an offside position.
64' BRILLIANT BRANDT
Teenager Julian Brandt shows great feet to earn his side a corner. Thiago Silva deals with a frustrated Stefan Kiessling on the far side to win the throw.
62' FINAL BAYER CHANGE
Leverkusen head coach Sami Hyypia has to send on central defender Philipp Wollscheid in place of Sidney Sam following Emir Spahic's sending-off.
60' SPAHIC SENT-OFF
Gonzalo Castro is booked and a matter of seconds later Emir Spahic is shown his second yellow card after putting his arm across Lucas Moura down the near touchline which means Bayer Levekusen are down to 10 men for the final half-an-hour of this match.
58' PENALTY CLAIMS
Omer Toprak makes a solid challenge on Zlatan Ibrahimovic while at the other end Stefan Kiessling goes over in the box but Viktor Kassai waves play on.
57' UNHAPPY GUARDADO
Gregory Van der Wiel falls to ground under the challenge of Andres Guardado, who has already been booked, and referee Viktor Kassai has a word with the player as he makes his way back.
55' SIMPLE CATCH
PSG consolidated their five-point cushion over second-placed Monaco in Ligue 1 at the weekend and they'll most likely be able to rest a few players for the second-leg of this tie in three weeks time. Stefan Reinartz's attempted through ball is flicked in the air by Alex and that allows Salvatore Sirigu to claim an easy catch.
52' BLANC ORDERS
Stefan Kiessling feels he is felled by Thiago Silva but the decision goes the defender's way. Paris St-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc is on the touchline giving orders determined not to allow any complacency creep into their game.
49' GUARDADO BOOKED
Andres Guardado has gone into referee Viktor Kassai's book after tugging Lucas Moura's shirt.
48' LEVERKUSEN CHANGES
Stefan Reinartz and Julian Brandt have come on for Simon Rolfes and Heung-Min Son.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
PSG had a relatively easier passage through to the knockout stages of this year's competition, winning the first three games of their group by an aggregate score line of 12-1 and all but ensuring qualification early on. They're on course for a cricket score this evening leading the hosts 3-0 already and they will look to possibly add a couple more in this second-half.
45' PSG ON FIRE IN GERMANY
Paris St-Germain have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-0 lead against Bayer Leverkusen at half-time in the atmospheric BayArena. Talismanic Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a brace after Blaise Matuidi's early opener. Ibrahimovic stepped up to fire his right-footer into the side netting. Two minutes later the Swede, who was having a relatively quiet game until his successful spot-kick, struck a fire cracker of a left-foot shot into the top corner to virtually put the tie to bed. He took his tally to 35 goals in his last 28 appearances for club and country as well as taking his overall tally in the Champions League to 10 goals, making him the competition's leading scorer - now one ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
45' HALF-TIME
Paris St-Germain lead Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 at the BayArena.
42' WHAT A GOAL
Blaise Matuidi lays the ball off for Zlatan Ibrahimovic who absolutely leathers his left-footer from 25 yards right into the top corner. A quite sumptuous strike from the Paris St-Germain hitman.
42' GOOOAAALLL!!!
ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC
39' NO MISTAKE BY ZLATAN
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who hasn't had the best of night's steps up for fire his right-footer into the side netting giving Bernd Leno no chance. The Swede takes his tally to 34 goals in his last 28 appearances for club and country and that's also his ninth Champions League of the campaign which draws him level with the competition's leading scorer, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
39' GOOOAAALLL!!!
ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC
38' PENALTY TO PSG
Emir Spahic drags down Ezequiel Lavezzi off the ball and referee Viktor Kassai points to the spot and books the defender.
35' OPTIMISTIC SPAHIC
Emir Spahic tries his luck from 30 yards, but Salvatore Sirigu watches the ball all the way taking it comfortably in the end.
33' OFF NIGHT FOR ZLAT
Zlatan Ibrahimovic seems to be having an off night for Paris St-Germain with his flicks and tricks just not coming off at the moment.
31' COOL VERRATTI
Marco Verratti is the coolest man in the place on the edge of his own box after the Germans try to keep the squeeze on PSG. The visitors can let arrogance and complacency creep into their game and Sami Hyypia's side will be aware of that.
28' KIESSLING COMES CLOSE
Marco Verratti manages to bring the ball away despite being surrounded by three Leverkusen players. Some very calm play by the Italian. The hosts are starting to apply a little bit of pressure and Stefan Kiessling comes close to turning home Roberto Hilbert's cross but Alex sticks to his guns and puts the forward off.
25' SOLID DEFENDING
Ezequiel Lavezzi tees up Zlatan Ibrahimovic but back comes Emir Spahic once again to dispossess the giant Swede. Bernd Leno saves a corner for his side while at the other end Andres Guardado fails to keep the ball in play and it's a goal kick.
22' SPAHIC FIGHTS HARD
Leverkusen have never been knocked out of a European tournament by a French side and they're starting to threaten Les Parisiens. Emir Spahic wins the battle against Zlatan Ibrahimovic in expense for a corner kick but that comes to nothing.
20' GOOD SAVE
Gonzalo Castro's right-foot delivery is headed towards goal by Stefan Kiessling but Salvatore Sirigu tips the ball over the crossbar. However, Paris St-Germain defenders are not worried because the flag immediately went up on the near side.
18' BAYER BOOKING
Roberto Hilbert takes no prisoners as he hacks down Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is being marked very closely. Referee Viktor Kassai has no hesitation in brandishing a yellow card to the Leverkusen defender.
16' DOMINANT FRENCH
Paris St-Germain are on a seven-match unbeaten run away from home since going down at Benfica on matchday six, winning five and they're completely dominating the Bundesliga outfit, keeping a hold of the ball like consummate professionals.
13' MORE PSG CHANCES
That goal by Blaise Matuidi helped Paris St-Germain reach 100 goals in the European Cup and it should have been 101 as firstly Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goalbound strike hits Andres Guardado before Ezequiel Lavezzi drags his effort wide of the far post.
10' FIRED OVER
Bodies converge on Sidney Sam as he leans back before firing his effort over the crossbar. Salvatore Sirigu then collects Stefan Kiessling's right-wing cross.
8' BLASTED INTO THE WALL
Zlatan Ibrahimovic blasts his right-foot free-kick from 25 yards straight into the wall but the ball is back in the French side's possession and they're more than happy to keep it away from the Germans.
5' MATUIDI BOOKED
Moments after his goal, Blaise Matuidi is booked by referee Viktor Kassai for a late diving challenge on Sidney Sam.
3' WHAT A START
Blaise Matuidi ghosts past Simon Rolfes before collecting Marco Verratti's through ball and finishing under Bernd Leno with ease. That's the kind of start Paris St-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc would have wanted and it's also a vital away goal in this tie.
3' GOOOAAALLL!!!
BLAISE MATUIDI
2' SAME SYSTEMS
Paris St-Germain have set up in a 4-3-3 system with Lucas Moura, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic working in tandem. Sami Hyypia has set up with the same formation and will look to hit their opponents on the counter-attack. Paris St-Germain's 36-game unbeaten run came to an end in December when Laurent Blanc charges lost 2-0 at Evian. The Bundesliga side will take heart from that and hope they can cause an upset against this formidable obstacle with the advantage of playing on German soil.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then at the Bay Arena, which is full to capacity for this big clash. The pitch is in pristine condition while the weather is unseasonably mild with day-time temperatures reaching 13 degrees celsius (55 Fahrenheit) on the eastern bank of the Rhine. The home team are wearing their all-black number while the big-spending Parisians - followed by a small number of away supporters - are in their all-white kit with red and blue stripes down the front. The home supporters are making plenty of noise.
0' LEVERKUSEN TEAM NEWS
Sami Hyypia has picked an attack-minded side for the first leg of their last-16 encounter against PSG. Sidney Sam is recalled after being left out of his side at the weekend and starts alongside forwards Stefan Kiessling and Heung-Min Son. Stefan Reinartz, who missed the last three fixtures with a heel problem, has to settle for a place on the bench along with defender Sebastian Boenisch who has been suffering from a back injury. Midfielder Emre Can is suspended.
0' PSG TEAM NEWS
Gregory van der Wiel and Marco Verratti both return from suspension to take their place in Laurent Blanc's starting XI. Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani (thigh) misses the trip so Lucas Moura joins Ezequiel Lavezzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack. Their £19m January signing from Newcastle Yohan Cabaye is amongst a strong looking substitutes bench.

0' MATCH PREVIEW
Bayer Leverkusen take on an in-form Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paris St-Germain at the Bay Arena in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie. The Ligue 1 leaders were knocked out by Barcelona at the quarter-final stage last season and will be aiming to go one better this campaign. The Swedish striker netted his 19th goal of the season in the 3-0 win over Valenciennes at the weekend and he has already scored eight goals in this season's competition - just one behind Real Madrid's main man Cristiano Ronaldo. Laurent Blanc's men head into the clash undefeated in their last nine league games. The Bundesliga side are suffering from a dip in form having lost five of their last seven games, including a shock home defeat by second-division side Kaiserslautern in the German Cup quarter-finals last week before going down 2-1 to Schalke on Saturday and Sami Hyypia's side are now a humungus 16 points off Bayern Munich in the standings. Given the contrasting form of these two sides, the French champions will be firm favourites to make it through to the quarter-finals. Follow me on Twitter: @RazMirza
0' HYYPIA DEMANDS EFFORT
Leverkusen head coach Sami Hyypia has demanded his players give their all when they tackle the might of Paris St-Germain on home soil. "They have spent a lot of money in recent years and built a very good team," said the former Liverpool defender. "They have a lot of individual quality and we'll have to be at our absolute best to get a good result. We have to give 100 per cent in every department. It will be important to neutralise Zlatan Ibrahimovic, so that he is not able to get into scoring positions. He is a very good player - maybe one of the very best right now. He can score a goal without having much of a chance. However, we won't prepare for this game any differently."
0' EARLY LEVERKUSEN TEAM NEWS
Sami Hyypia will be without midfielder Emre Can because of suspension, while defender Sebastian Boenisch is regarded as a doubt with a back injury. Sidney Sam is expected to be recalled after being left out of his side at the weekend and can expect to start alongside Stefan Kiessling and Heung-Min Son in an attack-minded side. Stefan Reinartz, who missed the last three fixtures with a heel problem, is also in line for a return.
0' BLANC WARY OF GERMANS
Paris St-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc admits Leverkusen are capable of causing his side problems when they go head-to-head at the Bay Arena. "Like every German team, Leverkusen are very athletic," said the Frenchman. "We have to be on our toes from ever free-kick and corner because they can be very dangerous from set pieces. We will try and dominate the match by taking care of the ball. It's the same pressure that accompanies any other game - everyone expects us to win. Leverkusen are very dangerous on the counter. Perhaps they will allow us to have more of the ball and wait to hit us on the break, so every time we lose possession, we have to work very hard to get it back."
0' EARLY PSG TEAM NEWS
Laurent Blanc has been dealt a blow with the news that Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani will miss the trip with a thigh injury that he picked up against Bordeaux in January. Calf and back problems may also keep out Zoumana Camara and Christophe Jallet respectively, but that aside, there are no other absentees. Gregory van der Wiel and Marco Verratti return from suspension. Blanc will be able to follow the game from the touchline after a one-match ban was suspended by UEFA last week.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
