FC Schalke 04 vs. Real Madrid
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME
What a way to secure a second victory on German soil for the Spanish giants, an emphatic 6-1 victory made up of two goals each for Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo. Huntelaar grabbed a late consolation for Schalke with a world class strike but the game was over long before, Real imperious without ever moving out of third gear. A real demolition job for Real tonight who looked superb throughout, and Schalke will just be glad that one is over.
90' NO CLEAN SHEET
A truly superb strike from Huntelaar, a reward for the supporters who have stuck around to the end. A floated cross in his direction fell perfectly and he hit a perfectly executed first time strike on the volley in off the bar. Casillas had no chance with that one.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
The best goal of the night goes to Schalke! What a hit from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
90' RONALDO WITH HIS SECOND
It's two for Ronaldo now here, who rounded the keeper after a Schalke mistake and he was never going to miss.
89' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Real hit six for the second time in a Champions League match this season. Be afraid, be very afraid.
87' FAHRMANN AGAIN
Another decent save from Ralf Fahrmann looked to have denied Karim Benzema a hat trick, although the flag was up for offside so it wouldn't have counted.
85' KELLER YELLING
Jens Keller cuts a slightly forlorn figure down in the Schalke technical area, and though he is still pointing and prompting his players he will surely be hoping for the full time whistle to spare his side any further embarrasment.
82' SCHALKE DEAD AND BURIED
This result will surely signal the end of Schalke's participation in this year's competition and they will look to consolidate their position in the Bundesliga in the hopes of returning next year.
79' JESE GETS THE NOD
Another sub here for Real Madrid and it's Bale who makes way for Jese Rodriguez. The young striker will gain some valuable experience on his 21st birthday. Jese has impressed many with his six goals so far this season after breaking all kinds of records with the Real B team, and will look to add to that total against a flagging Schalke side.
77' SCHALKE PRESSING
A slight resurgence from Schalke here as they probe the Real defence looking for a breakthrough but Casillas and his defence are in no mood to give up their clean sheet bonuses and resist all attempts at a meaningful attack.
76' FUCHS ON
Christian Fuchs replaces Sead Kolasinac who looks to be having trouble with his jaw.
74' RAMOS HEADS WIDE
Asier Illarramendi also enters the action here, replacing Xabi Alonso who has been excellent as ever. Ramos heads just wide from a corner from the right and it's almost six there.
72' OBASI ON
Chinedu Obasi takes to the field in place of Farfan who will be rested for the weekend's fixture. Obasi has registered only one goal in two years, so Ramos and company will be relatively untroubled it seems.
72' HUNTELAAR BOOKED
A strong tackle on Luka Modric sees Huntelaar pick up a booking and that is his first meaningful contribution of the night so far.
69' BALE BRACE
A wonderfully incisive pass from Ramos plays Bale through and the Welsh wonder takes the ball and slots home first time for his second and his side's fifth. It's a rout here now.
69' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Bale bags a brace now and it's five for Madrid.
67' ISCO IMMINENT
Isco is about to enter the fray here as Ancelotti looks to save his players legs, as they are still fighting on three fronts. The 21 year old Spaniard replaces Di Maria.
65' FAHRMANN SLIPS
Real now have 108 goals in all competitions so far this season, and almost make it 109 as a slip from Ralf Fahrmann nearly allows Ronaldo to grab a second. Fahrmann has played well tonight but has had no support from his team mates.
64' SCHALKE STILL SINGING
Real's domination has still not subdued the home supporters here who sing and drum as though it was their side who were winning 4-0. Admirable from the Veltins crowd but they are watching their side being taken apart here.
61' ANCELOTTI LOOKS ON
Carlo Ancelotti will be over the moon with his side's performance so far and looks to the bench now, considering his options as the game is all but dead.
59' SCHALKE OUTCLASSED
Leon Goretzka enters the fray in place of Kevin-Prince Boateng who looked to be struggling after picking up a knock. He was quiet at best this evening and it is strictly damage limitation for the German side now.
57' BENZEMA BRACE
So easy for Real as Benzema grabs a brace and that's his 20th of the season. He rounded the keeper after being played through by a wonderfully nonchalant flick from Ronaldo and made easy work of the finish. Wonderful from Real but Schalke are offering no resistance.
57' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's four, and that's Benzema's second.
54' TEN NOT OUT FOR RONALDO
That goal is Ronaldo's tenth in this year's Champions League and he made it look so easy. Pity Joel Matip there who was left isolated by his fellow defenders and Ronaldo simply does not miss those opportunities.
52' RONALDO SCORES AT LAST
Joel Matip is left one on one with Ronaldo and the Portuguese master leaves the defender with twisted blood after a series of step overs, breaks into the box and smashes the ball home left footed leaving Fahrmann no chance.
52' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ronaldo gets his goal and it is simply brilliant.
49' FARFAN THREAT
Jefferson Farfan looks to be Schalke's biggest threat here and he wins a free kick after some good work on the right flank. Ramos was forced to bring him down and is lucky to avoid a booking.
48' POSITIVE START
Jens Keller has had a few minutes to motivate his side here and they will look to begin the second half as they did the first. They had chances in the first period but failed to take them and will find encouragement from the fact that only a superb Casillas save kept them out.
46' WE'RE BACK
The second half is underway at the Veltins Arena and Schalke face an uphill battle if they want to take anything from this game. Jens Keller said they would need 'a little miracle' to win this one and that seems even less likely now.
45' REALLY EASY
2-0 it is at half time then but in truth it could, and should, be more. Real have dominated proceedings here, with their attacking trio of Bale, Ronaldo and Benzema causing havoc. Benzema scored the opener with an accomplished finish after great play by first Bale and then Ronaldo. If that was a team goal, then Madrid's second was all about Bale, the Welshman cutting through the heart of the defence before beating the impressive Fahrmann at his near post with a well struck shot. Schalke's best player has been the crowd so far, who refuse to give up on their team, but things are looking bleak for the German side at half time and it will take a miracle for them to salvage something here. How much will they rue that missed chance at 1-0? Time will tell, but Draxler will be kicking himself if his side do not rescue something.
45' RONALDO DENIED AGAIN
So so easy for Madrid as Benzema threads Ronaldo through, who is again denied by good goalkeeping from Fahrmann.
44' MARCELO TO BENZEMA, JUST WIDE
Marcelo has the freedom of the left flank here and fires in a great cross to Benzema. The ball is just in front of the Frenchman however and his loose connection flies just wide of the Schalke goal. That was a good chance for Benzema to bag a brace there.
43' SCHALKE CROWD IN GOOD VOICE
An audible yelp of frustration from Huntelaar there as another ball up to him is wayward and Real regain possession far too easily. The Schalke crowd aren't giving up on their team though, the atmosphere in the ground superb even though Real are bossing the game.
40' STRAIGHT AT THE WALL
Ronaldo hits the wall not once but twice and the ball is deflected behind for a corner which comes to nothing.
39' FREE KICK REAL
Very much in Ronaldo range here, Real have a free kick after a silly tackle from Boateng.
38' UNASSAILABLE
It is perhaps worth noting that when Real Madrid have taken the lead in games this season, they have gone on to win 29 out of 30. Schalke have it all to do.
36' FARFAN MISSES, FAHRMANN SAVES
More good work at pace from Jefferson Farfan but after the ball is played back to him inside the box the Peruvian can only loop his shot onto the roof of the net. Madrid then break at pace, Ronaldo is clear on the left but a good save from Fahrmann denies the Portuguese his goal.
34' SCHALKE BREAK
Great interplay from Real nearly sets Ronaldo up with a goal scoring chance but he is denied by a strong challenge from Howedes. The ball is played forward to Farfan who breaks at pace but the move comes to nothing.
32' RONALDO SO CLOSE
Xabi Alonso wins the ball back in defence and feeds Di Maria, who clips a lovely ball up to Ronaldo who turns his defender inside and out before unleashing a powerful shot which beats Fahrmann, but ends up back in the keepers arms after striking the post. A let off for Schalke there.
28' BALE BITING BACK
The comments of Jorge Valdano look to be ringing in the ears of Gareth Bale at the moment, spurring the Welshman on. The Real supremo claimed Bale looked 'downcast and unhappy' after his record breaking move from Tottenham but on this performance that seems anything but the case.
26' DI MARIA DELAYS
It's Angel Di Maria's turn to break through the Schalke back line and perhaps should have pulled the trigger there rather than attempting to thread the ball through to Ronaldo, who was in an offside position. That was a good opportunity for the Argentinian to notch his tenth goal of the season.
24' BALE FIRES OVER
Bale is brimming with confidence tonight, cutting in from the right and lashing a fierce shot a yard or two over the bar. He scored one from a similar distance against Elche in Real's last game and looks on top form.
22' BALE SUPERB
Gareth Bale has created one and scored one so far here and looks every bit the galactico with this performance. His mazy run showed persistence and determination, and the finish was sublime.
21' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Make that nine. Gareth Bale with a wonderful finish from 16 yards out.
20' STAT ATTACK
Real Madrid's attacking trio of Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo have scored between them eight goals more than the entire Schalke team.
18' MADRID HIGH LINE
Madrid were slow to regain their shape there as Matip played a good ball forward to Draxler, who then looked to slide the ball to his team mate in behind Marcelo and it was inches away from being a perfect ball before the Brazilian left back got back to stop the cross.
17' DRAXLER HOWLER
That miss from Draxler looks worse every time you see it, although Casillas' save looks even better. The Schalke midfielder looked far too relaxed and tried to tap the ball home when it seemed any real power on the shot would have meant a certain equaliser. Will Schalke live to regret that?
15' BENZEMA STRIKES, SCHALKE NEARLY EQUALISE
Karim Benzema's 34th Champions League goal in 59 games and Madrid are in front. Casillas saves Madrid moments later with a wonderful block from Draxler at close range. The young German really should have equalised there. Game on.
13' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Benzema with a confident finish from eight yards out and it's 1-0 Madrid.
11' BOATENG HEADER
A long looping ball into the box is met by Boateng but he can only direct a weak header straight at Casillas. The ball goes straight down the other end and Ronaldo is almost in but the pass is just too strong.
10' SCHALKER LOOK TO BREAK AT PACE
Schalke look happy to sit back and soak up the pressure from Real at the moment, looking to break forward at speed whenever possible. Matip is in with another strong tackle on Ronaldo there.
7' MATIP HAVING NONE OF IT
A first touch for Ronaldo sees him up against Joel Matip on the touchline. He tries a couple of stepovers but the tall defender is having none of it and hoofs clear.
7' REAL SETTLING
Real Madrid are looking to control the game early, bossing the possession and making Schalke chase them after that early chance for the hosts.
5' BENZEMA DENIED BY OFFSIDE FLAG
Lovely approach play from Real and Benzema is put clean through on the left but the flag is up for offside. Marginal at best that one.
3' HOWEDES INTRODUCES HIMSELF
An early introduction to the game for Ronaldo at the hands of Howedes there, the German centre back letting him know he's in for a physical battle.
2' SCHALKE CHANCE
Howedes heads just wide from a corner after some good early pressure from Schalke. A free header there and a slow start from Madrid.
1' WE'RE OFF
We're off here and Real are looking to record only their second ever victory on German soil.
0' REAL LINE UP
Iker Casillas is selected ahead of Lopez in goal with a back four of Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe and Marcelo. Modric and Xabi Alonso will seek to control possession in the central area with a formidable frontline of Bale, Di Maria and Ronaldo providing support for lone striker Benzema.
0' SCHALKE LINE UP
Fahrmann starts in goal. His back four is Howedes, Matip, Santana and Kolasinac. The fluid five man midfield is comprised of Kevin-Prince Boateng, Neustadter, Farfan, Meyer and long term Arsenal target Julian Draxler. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is the lone striker.
0' TEAM NEWS
Schalke will be without Dennis Aogo and Marco Hoger for tonight's match, both forced to miss out with knee complaints. Christian Clemens, Benedikt Howedes and Atsuto Uchida are all doubts for this one. Madrid welcome back Cristiano Ronaldo from suspension. Sami Khedira (knee) is the one major loss for Real.
0' GERMANY RESISTS SPANISH INVASION
Real Madrid is a name that strikes fear into the hearts of teams all across Europe, and they have ruled over the majority of the continent for the best part of 60 years. Germany, however, has been less than a happy hunting ground for the Spanish giants. Last season's 4-1 demolition at the hands of Schalke's great rivals Dortmund was their 18th defeat in 25 visits to Germany, and they have won only once, way back in 2000 at Leverkusen. Schalke boss Jens Keller picked up on this in his pre match comments, and said it was something he and his Schalke team would "hope to continue." Real will pay little attention to such statistics, but there is a sense that a score draw here would prove very welcome indeed.
0' ANCELOTTI
Carlo Ancelotti's pre match comments were conducted in his usual assured manner, and the Italian gave due deference to Schalke without ever appearing overly concerned with the prospect of facing off against one of Europe's form teams. He said “I predict an intense match and I think Schalke will give everything in going for the win. We know all about their qualities. They are very well-organised, especially at the back, and have a good balance between young talented players like Max Meyer and Julian Draxler, and players with a lot of experience like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. They do not play spectacular football but they are solid and consistent.” Huntelaar is well known to Real fans, following his unspectacular spell with the Spanish giants in 2009, scoring eight goals in twenty appearances. He has since become one of German football's top marksman, and Ancelotti will be well aware of the threat posed by the Dutchman. On the subject of motivation, Ancelotti said “I do not have to tell my players much – they want to win every competition. At the moment the team are in a good shape, but we have to prepare for every match very methodically so that our run continues.” Most worryingly for Schalke however, Ancelotti also praised the attitude of the returning Ronaldo “Ronaldo is especially motivated because he is ready to play again [after a three-match domestic ban]. He is very well prepared and has the right balance. I expect him to be in top shape, mentally and physically.” Even a half-fit Ronaldo is an unsettling prospect, so Schalke will not relish the task of attempting to contain the Portuguese if he is indeed on top form.
0' SCHALKE'S BOSS BELIEVES
Jens Keller was cautiously optimistic when facing questions about his side's chances this evening, and believes that if things fall just right for his men, they could well pull off a 'little miracle.' Schalke are going well in the Bundesliga, on a run of eight games without a defeat, and have conceded only twice in that time. Keller said “After Bayern, Real Madrid are maybe the second-best team in the world at the moment. They have extraordinary players in every position so it won't be an easy game.  But we are the home team and must be brave; we will not hide. To be successful, everybody will have to be at 100%. Only then might it be possible to pull off a little miracle. Real are on another level, financially, but as Dortmund proved by making it to the final last year, there is always a chance. Real Madrid have an incredible team but we're not bad either. We're in very good shape, as you can see from our recent results. But it is not just the results, but the manner in which we have achieved them. Real are very strong at the back and play very aggressively. But our coaching staff will pinpoint some deficiencies and we will try to play on those. As you can see from the past few weeks, it can be quite hard to score against us. A clean sheet must be our aim.” Keller will have to hope that this confident approach can filter down to his players, and have a positive impact on their performance, as they will have to be at their best to get a result tonight.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Tonight's game at the Veltins Arena, the first ever between these two sides, sees the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Real Madrid side after three games out. The 2013 FIFA Ballon D'Or winner served a three game suspension after picking up a red card against Athletic Bilbao earlier in the month. This will provide a huge boost to an already strong Real side, and Schalke will have it all to do to get a result in this one. They are going well domestically however, and Real's record in Germany is miserable, so an upset could well be on the card, although Madrid are in a rich vein of form themselves and the prospect of a treble will keep them motivated until the dying moments of the season.
0' REF WATCH
This Champions League last 16 tie will be overseen by an all English officiating team. The vastly experienced Howard Webb is the man in charge of this one, backed by assistants Mike Mullarkey, Darren Cann, Lee Probert and Kevin Friend. The fourth official is Stephen Child.
