Galatasaray vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' CHELSEA HELD IN TURKEY
A steering second-half comeback from Galatasaray helped them earn a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Turk Telekom Arena. The Blues dominated the Turkish champions in the opening 45 minutes and deservedly took the lead thanks to Fernando Torres' strike. But the hosts hit back in the second period and they were thankful to Cameroon international defender Aurelien Chedjou for handing them a priceless equaliser ahead of the second leg. Jose Mourinho's men made a blistering start and scored a vital away goal after nine minutes in Istanbul. Andre Schurrle picked out flying full-back Cesar Azpilicueta down the left and he broke through a leaky Gala defensive line before squaring the ball for Torres who made no mistake with a cool, calm and collected close-range finish. It was the Spain international's sixth goal in his last five Champions League starts. Roberto Mancini changed his system to 4-5-1 after just 30 minutes and it seemed to spring his side into life. They hit back halfway through the second-half after Selcuk Inan somehow managed to strike the post from a yard out after 63 minutes. Just two minutes later they did score when Wesley Sneijder's inswinging corner flew over John Terry's head for the waiting Chedjou to slot the ball into the back of the net. It's still all to play for at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday 11 March.
90' FULL-TIME
Galatasaray fight back to hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Turk Telekom Arena.
90' OSCAR COMES ON
Oscar will make a brief 100th appearance for Chelsea as he comes on for Eden Hazard for the final few minutes.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be THREE added minutes in this last-16 first leg at the Turk Telekom Arena.
88' WELL OVER
Samuel Eto'o lays the ball back for John Obi Mikel who smacks it high over the crossbar. Mikel is then caught by Felipe Melo but the Brazilian still doesn't go into referee Carlos Velasco Carballo's book.
85' NOT STICKING
The ball is not sticking for Chelsea now with Eden Hazard playing as the lone frontman. Wesley Sneijder's attempted chip was never going to trouble Petr Cech.
82' HARMLESSLY WIDE
Yekta Kurtulus tries his luck from range but the ball flies harmlessly wide of Petr Cech's far post.
80' END OF THE NIGHT FOR DROGBA
Didier Drogba is unhappy as he is brought off for Umut Bulut, who is a natural goalscorer.
78' KEEP BALL
Galatasaray head coach Roberto Mancini is urging his side to push up the pitch and force Chelsea into making a mistake. Eden Hazard's neat header is collected by Petr Cech.
76' POSITIVE DEFENDING
Aurelien Chedjou does well to deal with the threat of Eden Hazard. Branislav Ivanovic is then awarded a free-kick after being pushed over.
74' FINE STOP
Selcuk Inan's attempted cross comes back off Frank Lampard for a throw. Alex Telles then forces a fine stop from Petr Cech. This is much better from the Turkish champions.
71' BLUES ON THE BALL
This game now pits together the top scoring African players in the history of the Champions League: Didier Drogba (42 goals) and Samuel Eto'o (29). They're both on the pitch. Alex Telles deals with Willian but the Londoners are getting more possession.
68' CHELSEA CHANGES
Jose Mourinho sends on John Obi Mikel for Andre Schurrle and then the Blues goalscorer Fernando Torres is replaced by Samuel Eto'o.
65' EASY FINISH
Wesley Sneijder's inswinging corner flies over John Terry and Aurelien Chedjou is waiting behind him for tuck the ball into an empty net to level things up. Cue the noise inside this atmospheric Turk Telekom Arena.
65' GOOOAAALLL!!!
AURELIEN CHEDJOU
63' WHAT A MISS
Chelsea are slow reacting to the short corner to Wesley Sneijder whose cross is headed down towards goal by Didier Drogba and Selcuk Inan somehow studs the ball against the post from a yard out.
61' DEEP CROSS
Goalkeeper Petr Cech is shown a yellow card for taking his time with his goal kick. Branislav Ivanovic takes no chances with a deep cross and the hosts get on with it.
59' RAMIRES ALSO BOOKED
Ramires becomes the third player to go in referee Carlos Velasco Carballo's book after a clumsy challenge in the middle of the park.
57' COUPLE OF BOOKINGS
Andre Schurrle is booked after catching Felipe Melo from behind. They play it quick and Selcuk Inan brings down Frank Lampard and the Galatasaray man also goes in the book.
55' DEFLECTED BEHIND
Burak Yilmaz's effort deflects off Gary Cahill and dribbles behind for a corner. Selcuk Inan's corner is harmlessly headed over though and it's a goal kick to the visitors.
52' GOOD SAVE
Fernando Torres bursts straight through Aurelien Chedjou and Semih Kaya before seeing his low right-footed effort parried behind for a corner by Fernando Muslera. That could easily have been game over for Gala!
50' DANGEROUS TACKLE
Burak Yilmaz catches Cesar Azpilicueta with a sliding challenge. The home side have made a positive start to this second half, but they're still handing possession away needlessly.
47' SECOND GALA CHANGE
Semih Kaya replaces midfielder Hakan Balta at the start of this second half as Roberto Mancini makes his second change of the match.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Chelsea could feasibly become the flag bearers for English football in the Champions League in the next few weeks after a poor run of results in the competition with Manchester City, United and Arsenal all losing. They're doing well tonight and will aim to kill this tie in Turkey tonight. Robero Mancini has pitted his wits against old rival Jose Mourinho nine times and won on six of them.
45' TORRES HANDS BLUES ADVANTAGE
Chelsea have dominated Turkish champions Galatasaray in the opening 45 minutes of their Champions League last-16 first leg at the Turk Telekom Arena and deservedly lead 1-0 thanks to Fernando Torres' early strike. Roberto Mancini changed his system to 4-5-1 after 30 minutes and it seemed to spring his side into life. However, they're still looking second best.
45' HALF-TIME
Chelsea lead Galatasaray 1-0 at the break in this Champions League last-16 first leg tie at the Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
We're into TWO added minutes of stoppage time at the Turk Telekom Arena. Yekta Kurtulus gets across to cut out Fernando Torres' low cross.
44' NO GOAL
John Terry is booked to keeping a hold of the ball as Gala decide to take another quick throw. Although the ball ends up in the back of the Chelsea net, referee Carlos Velasco Carballo rules it out because there are two balls on the pitch.
42' BLUES BREAK
The corner is cleared and Eden Hazard leads the charge but instead of taking on the last man Emmanuel Eboue he checks and decides to give it to Frank Lampard wide right. The move eventually breaks down.
39' TIPPED AWAY
Alex Telles' left-foot effort is swinging and twisting through the air so Petr Cech is forced to turn it behind for a corner.
37' POOR TOUCH
Fernando Torres' touch lets him down just as he looks to take on full-back Hakan Balta. Galatasaray have only lost one of their last seven Champions League home games, but they've been second best so far tonight.
34' ANGRY WES
Wesley Sneijder comes close to throwing the ball away in disgust at the referee's decision to award Chelsea the throw, but eventually decides against it. The visitors keep possession at the back and are still looking more comfortable on the ball than the hosts.
31' GALA SUBSTITUTION
Indeed Roberto Mancini decides to make an early change. Champions League debutant Izet Hajrovic is brought off with Yekta Kurtulus coming on. The formation has changed to 4-5-1 with Didier Drogba up top on his own.
28' DANGEROUS TORRES
Fernando Torres almost gets away from Hakan Balta but everytime Chelsea attack, they look like scoring. Galatasaray head coach Roberto Mancini could surely not have sent his team to play this system!
25' SUPERB CHALLENGE
Alex Telles hands the ball back to Chelsea and Ramires immediately looks for Andre Schurrle with a long ball. Out comes Fernando Muslera to claim the ball. Frank Lampard then makes a superb sliding challenge on Felipe Melo in the box. Referee Carlos Velasco Carballo watched the incident all the way.
22' NO DIP FROM FRANK
Frank Lampard fails to get the downward dip from the 30-yard free-kick. Burak Yilmaz then catches Ramires with a elbow and the midfielder is in need of some attention.
19' FREE-KICK CHELSEA
Ramires tries to force the ball through the middle for Fernando Torres but Emmanuel Eboue reads the play. Torres earns a free-kick after being brushed to the floor by big defender Aurelien Chedjou.
17' POOR ATTEMPT
Chelsea's only ever visit to Galatasaray saw them win 5-0 victory in 1999 and because there is so much space in the home side's backline, Jose Mourinho will fancy a similar scoreline tonight. However, a quick throw allows Izet Hajrovic a shot at goal, but he got right underneath it.
14' ONE WAY TRAFFIC
Galatasaray have now conceded 15 goals in the Champions League this season, the highest tally among the 16 teams who have reached the knockout stages. Willian finds space on the edge of the box but his low drive is easily held by Fernando Muslera.
11' BAD TOUCH
Wesley Sneijder finds Didier Drogba in a good position but his touch lets him down at the last minute. The flag was up on the far side in any case.
9' WONDERFUL START
Andre Schurrle picks out the flying Cesar Azpilicueta down the left. The Spaniard breaks through the leaky Gala defensive line before squaring the ball for Fernando Torres who slots home with ease. He has now scored six goals in his last five Champions League starts.
9' GOOOAAALLL!!!
FERNANDO TORRES
8' MELO CHALLENGE
Felipe Melo slides in and takes Willian clean out. The Chelsea players and Jose Mourinho demand the Brazilian be booked but referee Carlos Velasco Carballo waves away appeals. The Blues players seem well aware that Melo is one booking away from missing the next leg.
6' LUCKY MUSLERA
Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera makes a real mess of his kick and the ball falls kindly to the onrushing Willian, but his attempted chip deflects off a defender and spins off target. The hosts are let off the hook!
5' EARLY TACKLES
Plenty of early slips on this well oiled surface. It's slightly tricky down the middle and it's where Didier Drogba takes an early knock to earn his side a free-kick. As soon as Chelsea keep possession the home crowd whistle like mad to try and put them off. Andre Schurrle is caught offside with the Gala defence holding a very high line.
3' DIFFERENT SYSTEMS
Roberto Mancini has set his side up with a 4-4-2 formation with Didier Drogba and Burak Yilmaz in attack while Chelsea have set up in a 4-2-3-1 system and Jose Mourinho will want his side to assert their authority from the start, but it won't be easy in front of these passionate supporters. The Turks have won 14 out of their last 15 home games.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then! Galatasaray are in their traditional yellow, red and white number while Chelsea are in their all-blue kit. The atmosphere inside this cauldron of the Turk Telekom Arena is quite phenomenal. The weather is mild while the pitch is still looking lush and green. The Londoners are in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.
0' GALATASARAY TEAM NEWS
The Turkish club are boosted by the return Aurelien Chedjou who is back in the Gala side after the Cameroonian defender missed their past four games with a groin injury. Brazilian Felipe Melo starts in the middle and will be key with Didier Drogba and Dutch schemer Wesley Sneijder, who both enjoyed great success under Jose Mourinho, are in the side. Izet Hajrovic makes only his fourth appearance for the hosts and his first in the competition.
0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
Fernando Torres gets the nod to play up front with Samuel Eto'o having to settle for a place on the bench while David Luiz missed out through injury. Oscar (ankle) is also on the bench alongside John Obi Mikel. Schurrle is expected to play just behind Torres in an attacking line-up.

0' MATCH PREVIEW
Chelsea head out to Turkey for tonight's Champions League last-16 first leg showdown against Galatasaray in a match that couldn't be scripted better in a Hollywood screenplay. The tie features numerous subplots: Didier Drogba playing against the side for whom he scored the European Cup winning penalty in 2012 against Bayern Munich; Jose Mourinho versus Roberto Mancini, who he succeeded as Inter Milan boss before the Italian took charge at Manchester City; and Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder playing against his former boss Mourinho. The contest takes place in the cauldron of the Turk Telekom Arena, where Mourinho's Real Madrid lost their quarter-final second leg last term, advancing as a result of a handsome win at home in the first leg. Both clubs enjoyed 1-0 wins on Saturday. Chelsea beat Everton thanks to a very late winner from captain John Terry to retain their position at the top of the Premier League table while a first-half penalty from midfielder Selcuk Inan helped Galatasaray defeat fierce rival Besiktas and move to second in the Turkish Super League. They got through to this stage of the competition as a result of beating Juventus in a match delayed by heavy snow thanks to Sneijder's last-gasp winner. This tie has been overshadowed by comments made by Mourinho last week about the lack of scorers in his squad to French TV station Canal Plus. The side have struggled for goals from their three recognised strikers, Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, who have found the net 11 times between them in the league this season, but a solid performace and a few goals in Turkey will do wonders to silence the critics. 0' MANCINI WANTS POSITIVE RESULT
Galatasaray head coach Roberto Mancini believes a positive result is required if the Turkish champions are to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals. But the former Manchester City boss admits Chelsea will be firm favourites to qualify. "I think that Chelsea are on top of the Premier League because they are a top team," he said. "They have really good players - these players who can change the game at any moment. They have fantastic players who are used to playing games like this. I think they have an 80 per cent chance of going through."
0' DROGBA OUT TO BEAT BLUES
Didier Drogba has warned Jose Mourinho that he will be out to get one over on his former manager - although he admits the club will always have "a special place in my heart". Under Mourinho's tutelage, Drogba won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups, adding a further Premier League medal and three more FA Cups, as well as the European Cup, after the Portuguese left the club in 2007. And while Drogba speaks fondly of his time at Chelsea, he has warned he will feel no guilt if he scores against the Blues in the last-16. "After the draw Jose texted me to say, 'it's your moment, enjoy it'," Drogba said. "People know how much I love the club and the fans. I will still be happy to score because I also want to qualify for the next round. But you have to show respect." He added: "I can't forget what I've done there and all the memories of the club. Chelsea will always have a special place in my heart. And in my life."
0' EARLY GALATASARAY TEAM NEWS
Galatasaray are likely to be without Aurelien Chedjou as the Cameroonian defender has missed Gala's past four games with a groin injury. However, the Turkish club are boosted by the return of Aydin Yilmaz and Gokhan Zan. Brazilian Felipe Melo will be key as will Didier Drogba and Dutch schemer Wesley Sneijder, who both enjoyed great success under Jose Mourinho and will be looking to get one over their former boss.
0' JOSE TARGETS DROGBA SHUT OUT
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho admits it will be "a strange feeling" when he comes up against Didier Drogba. The powerful Ivorian centre-forward was one of the cornerstones of Mourinho's first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, with the pair arriving at the same time in 2004. "It's a strange feeling," Mourinho said, having previously expressed a wish that the clubs would come out of the hat together before the draw was made. "I like to play against the best and Galatasaray are the Turkish champions. We know him (Drogba) well and that means there will be no friends during the game. We have respect for a real legend of this club before the game and after the game, but we have a job to do. It's in his nature to win and to score, but we have to stop him."
0' EARLY CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
David Luiz and John Obi Mikel have travelled for the game. The pair missed Saturday's match with Everton through injury but have travelled to Istanbul, as has Oscar despite being substituted at half-time with an ankle complaint. January additions Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah are cup-tied having already played in the Champions League this season, while Marco van Ginkel is continuing his rehabilitation from his serious knee injury.
0' KEY BATTLES
DIDIER DROGBA v JOHN TERRY: Drogba and Terry are no strangers to each other, having spent eight seasons together at Chelsea between 2004 and 2012. While not being the all-powerful force he once was the Ivorian has already scored against Juventus and Copenhagen in this season's competition. Chelsea supporters will hope that Drogba is overcome by the emotion of the occasion - something that has rarely been a problem for Terry. WESLEY SNEIJDER v DAVID LUIZ: With his former clubs including Real Madrid and Inter Milan, Sneijder is no stranger to big games and will revel in the opportunity to show former manager Jose Mourinho that he still has what it takes. Luiz has tended to be Mourinho's midfield choice in Chelsea's biggest matches recently, and his bustling play could cause problems and knock Sneijder out of contention - although he will need to keep his discipline against the Dutch playmaker. SEMIH KAYA v SAMUEL ETO'O: One-time Manchester United target Kaya is now a fixture for club and country at centre-back. The Turkish 22-year-old has drawn comparisons with Gerard Pique and both Galatasaray and Turkey average less than a goal a game conceded when he has been in the side this season. The record is likely to be tested by Eto'o, with the veteran impressing at Chelsea recently in the absence of Fernando Torres and establishing himself as Mourinho's first-choice striker.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
The referee in charge of this encounter is 42-year-old Carlos Velasco Carballo from Madrid, Spain. His assistants down the touchline are Roberto Alonso and Juan Yuste. The UEFA delegate is Jean Louis Piette from France while the UEFA referee observer is Vaclav Krondl from the Czech Republic.
