Fulham-Southampton Preview

(AP) -- LONDON (SE) - Southampton will be looking to pick up their second win of the season when they welcome Fulham to St Mary's on Sunday afternoon.

The Saints have lost five of their six games since returning to the top flight, conceding 18 goals, but manager Nigel Adkins insists he will stick with his team's attacking approach.

"You should always be positive because you've got to look to win games," said Adkins. "We do play good passing football and that was demonstrated in good spells in the second half and at home we are very effective in doing that, but it's about winning games of football. You've got to score goals to win games of football and, likewise, you've got to keep them out at the other end.

"We have shipped far too many goals, it's something we're addressing, but likewise you've got to understand you're playing against good players. We believe in playing football the right way, but we've come away from home and it's about winning. We've got a philosophy but it's got be effective passing. We can do that, as Everton did - they can pass the ball about, move with a good rotation and have that physical presence going forward, but they can play long if they need to. It's about having that all round game."

Fulham transfer activity and injury problems have left them short in midfield, but the club have been boosted in recent weeks by the improved fitness of free transfer Georgios Karagounis.

"I feel good and I've been working hard here now for 25 days," said the former Greece captain. "I've trained hard and played a practice match too to allow me to get used to the rhythm of play. The main focus for me now is to get used to the pace of the game, I feel good and physically I am ready.

"Our aim is to do as well as we can in the Premier League and to be as high up the table as possible, hopefully do well in a cup also. For now, I think we are progressing well and we are playing good entertaining football and scoring a lot of goals, one of the highest scoring teams in the Premier League, and this is a good basis to move forwards."

Southampton have doubts over Danny Fox (chest) and Morgan Schneiderlin (knee), while Jack Cork (knee) is out. Fulham may be without Kieran Richardson (thigh), but Dimitar Berbatov (thigh), Simon Davies (thigh), Mahamadou Diarra (knee) and Philippe Senderos (ankle) are missing.

The Saints haven't lost at home to Fulham in 77 years - 17 meetings. Fulham are looking for consecutive away wins for the first time in two seasons. The Cottagers have won just five games on the road in their last 21.
