Same old story for Arsenal then! The home side turned on the style in the first half, which saw Abou Diaby come close among several other Arsenal chances. Sunderland caused a few scares on the break, but it was their outstanding defending that was clearly the best feature of their performance. The second half was much the same, and Arsenal came even closer to scoring as opportunities for Sunderland lessened. Olivier Giroud had a moment to forget late on when he should have easily rounded off a sparkling move that Santi Cazorla was pivotal to, instead shooting wide with just the keeper to beat. Thoroughly disappointing overall for Arsenal overall considering how dominant they were, while Sunderland will be ecstatic that Martin O'Neill's gameplan worked a treat.

Lukas Podolski smashes a powerful free kick a few yards over from 30 yards. I hear Santi Cazorla is something of a free kick expert, so maybe we'll see him take one from that sort of range before the game is out.

Lots of dainty little passes in and around the final third from Arsenal. Gervinho, Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski can't quite make something happen in a congested part of the field.

Many doubt just how high up the table Arsenal can push this season, but no one will be surpised by the sort of football they've served up for large chunks of this first half. Santi Cazorla has looked mightily impressive, showing skill and vision that has been instrumental to Arsenal's best moves so far. He's had a couple of chances of his own too, as has Theo Walcott, but Simon Mignloet's biggest test came when he was called upon to save a low Abou Diaby drive that was heading for the bottom corner. Sunderland were obviously chasing shadows for long periods, although they have held firm and managed to work Wojciech Szczesny into action on a few occasions.

It's goalless at the break, despite some beautiful Arsenal football.

As you have probably gathered from the way the chances have been going, Arsenal are dominating in possession at the moment. Nothing to show for it so far, but there's no need to shun the patient approach yet.

Mikel Arteta surprisingly opts to go for goal with a free kick from way out. Needless to say Simon Mignolet isn't troubled.
30' CAZORLA AGAIN!
Could Santi Cazorla turn out to be one of the buys of the season!? This time he industriously wins the ball back off an opponent and releases Theo Walcott down the left with a precise pass. Walcott can't quite get a shot off in to cap the move.

The Gunners pass in triangles with Santi Cazorla mainly pulling the strings. Abou Diaby rounds off the move by arrowing a shot towards the bottom corner, which Simon Mignolet pushes round the post for a flag kick.

Class play from Santi Cazorla again who feints to shoot, cuts inside on his right foot from the left flank and delivers a peach of a cross for Theo Walcott. The man on the end of it can only head over, however.

Theo Walcott fires wide following assistance from Kieran Gibbs and Per Mertesacker.
21' SUPER MOVE
A glorious passage of fluid play from Arsenal culminates with Carl Jenkinson breaking down the right and sending in a near-post cross. Theo Walcott tries twice to go for goal with awkward attempts before the ball ricochets out for a corner.
18' QUEUING UP FOR IT
Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski seem to both go for a ball cut back by Gervinho, but it's Carzola who gets the shot off and fires narrowly wide.

Arsenal are showing a few flashes of their usual free-flowing selves, although Sunderland are looking ambitious too. Jack Colback has broken forward from midfield several times already, forcing Per Mertesacker into an important interception moments ago with a half chance he created.

You have to go back to 2000 - at Sunderland, funnily enough - to find the last time Arsenal lost on the opening day of a campaign. Sunderland are unbeaten in their last five curtain raisers.

Abou Diaby produces a burst of pace down the left and sends a cross in, which Simon Mignolet has to be on his toes to deal with.

We just saw there what Santi Cazorla can do, and Lukas Podolski is also showing promise early on. The German has shown glimpses of his power and pace, suggesting he will have no trouble adapting to the rigours of the Premier League.

Simon Mignolet saves excellently to deny Santi Cazorla up the other end. The new signing did briliiantly to create a shooting chance for himself there.

After the home side had the better of the opening exchanges, Jack Colback is allowed into an almost one-on-one situation with Wojciech Szczesny. The Arsenal keeper comes out of it the better.

Stephane Sessegnon's ankle injury could mean that recently acquired striker Louis Saha starts for Sunderland. Wes Brown, Phil Bardsley and David Vaughan all miss out with knee, ankle and hernia problems.

Theo Walcott faces a late fitness test on a thigh injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Laurent Koscielny are definitely out with respective ankle and calf injuries, but new signing Santi Carzola could feature if he is fresh enough after international duty with Spain.

Stability was the name of the game after Martin O'Neill came in last season, however it's hard to predict whether they'll be in the top eight, scrapping much lower down the league or cruising in mid-table come May. Besides some youthful talent for the future, the only two players to come in have been veterans on free transfers – Carlos Cuellar from Aston Villa and earlier this week Louis Saha from Tottenham Hotspur. Rumours have been going round about Steven Fletcher from Wolves, and you would think his presence would be very much welcomed given the lack of goals from the Black Cats in pre-season.
0' VAN PERSIE OUT, £24 MILLION IN
Some news about Robin van Persie, eh? Arsenal's key man last season completed his £24 million move to Manchester United yesterday, rounding off a saga that has prompted possibly even more questions about Arsenal's ambitions than Manchester United's. Allowing the Dutchman to go to United has understandably rankled with a large section of the Arsenal faithful, and Arsene Wenger's claims that the club had little choice due to the contract situation will unlikely quell the discontent. This of course has all followed a summer in which Wenger finally decided to reach for the chequebook, bringing in Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla for a combined total not far shy of £30 million. Whether the Van Persie gamble pays off, we'll have to wait and see.
