West Bromwich Albion vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' FT: WEST BROM 3 LIVERPOOL 0
West Brom open a Premier League season with a win for the first time in seven attempts and give Steve Clarke victory in his first game in charge. Ten-man Liverpool bossed the opening half and Luis Suarez passed up three presentable changes to give the visitors the lead, seeing one shot superbly saved by Ben Foster and two others go wide of the target. Those misses were to prove costly as the Baggies struck out of the blue just before half-time. A corner from James Morrison was only partly cleared by Daniel Agger and Zoltan Gera chested the ball down before lashing a volley past Pepe Reina. Agger's day was to get decidedly worse as he was red-carded on the hour for bringing down Shane Long to concede a penalty. The Ireland striker's effort, though, was tame and well saved by Reina. Three minutes later West Brom were gifted another penalty after a slip by Martin Skrtel, who felled Long. Peter Odemwingie stepped up this time and made no mistake from 12 yards. On-loan Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku added a third 12 minutes from time and steadier finishing in the closing stages would have seen Liverpool well and truly routed. If he didn't know it before, Brendan Rodgers will now appreciate the size of the task ahead of him at Anfield.
90' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Andy Carroll is cautioned after an altercation with Jonas Olsson.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of three minutes of added time.
88' CAN WE GO HOME NOW?
The end of this game cannot come quickly enough for Liverpool. They have been pitiful in this second half.
85' SHOTS POURING IN
Martin Kelly makes a mistake and Marc-Antoine Fortune tees up Romelo Lukaku. Reina saves Liverpool again.
84' ONE-WAY TRAFFIC
Marc-Antoine Fortune outpaces Martin Kelly and shoots at goal. Reina saves again. Moments later Carroll gets his head in the way of a Mulumbu shot before the Congolese then blasts over.
83' REINA IN THE WAY
West Brom look like they may score again every time they attack. Peter Odemwingie shoots straight at Pepe Reina.
82' WEST BROM SUBSTITUTION
James Morrison is replaced by Chris Brunt.
81' BAD MISS FROM SUAREZ
Luis Suarez misses another sitter, heading wide at the far post when totally unmarked.
80' DEFENCE PARTS LIKE THE RED SEA
Romelo Lukaku is one-on-one with Skrtel, who makes a timely tackle to clear the danger.
79' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Joe Cole is injured and has to go off, making way for Andy Carroll.
78' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Liam Ridgewell gets credit for the assist, crossing to the back post where Romelo Lukaku applies the coup de grace.
77' GOAL: WEST BROM 3 LIVERPOOL 0
It's turning into a rout here. Romelo Lukaku makes it three.
75' WEST BROM BOOKING
Youssouf Mulumbu is rightly shown the yellow card for a horribile tackle on Joe Cole.
74' IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THREE
Lukaku shrugs off the attentions of Jamie Carragher and tees up Morrison at the far post, but his effort is wasteful in the extreme and wide of the target.
72' PENALTY CLAIMS
Martin Kelly goes to ground inside the West Brom area trying to get on the end of a Gerrard free-kick, but referee Phil Dowd dismisses his claims for a penalty.
69' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Joe Cole replaces Lucas.
68' WEST BROM SUBSTITUTIONS
Romelu Lukaku and Marc-Antoine Fortune replace Shane Long and Zoltan Gera.
67' LET-OFF FOR FOSTER
Foster drops a cross at the feet of Suarez, who shoots over the crossbar. It's not Liverpool's day.
64' GOAL: WEST BROM 2 LIVERPOOL 0
Peter Odemwingie steps up this time and he shows Shane Long how to do it, smashing home a right-foot rocket.
63' WEST BROM PENALTY
Martin Skrtel slips and brings down Shane Long. It's another West Brom penalty.
62' STILL HOPE FOR THE REDS
Boy, is that a lifeline for Liverpool. Two goals adrift and down to ten men and it really would have been game over.
61' PENALTY SAVED
Pepe Reina makes a brillliant save to keep out a weak penalty from Shane Long.
60' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Jamie Carragher comes on for Stewart Downing.
59' LIVERPOOL RED CARD
Daniel Agger brings down Shane Long and it's a nightmare for Liverpool - a red card for the defender and a West Brom penalty!
57' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Lucas Leiva marks his return to Premier League action by collecting a booking for a mis-timed tackle.
56' REDS WOES CONTINUE
Liverpool lost 11 of their final 19 league games in the 2011-12 campaign. They could do without another setback here.
54' WASTED AGAIN
This wayward crossing disease is spreading. Glen Johnson this time delivers the perfect ball - if you striker is sat 17 rows deep in the stands behind the goal, that is.
53' BAGGIES DEFENDING STOUTLY
Suarez plays a nice one-two with Borini before being disposssed, but Steven Gerrard wins the visitors a corner. Agger arrives late, but Gareth McAuley heads the set-piece away.
51' DOWNING THE DUMPS
Stewart Downing delivers a dreadful cross from the right. Brendan Rodgers kicks the ground in frustration.
49' FOR FAR AWAY
Liverpool win a free-kick just outside the West Brom box. Luis Suarez curls an effort round the wall but just wide of the post.
47' WORK TO DO
Neither side has made any changes at the break, but Liverpool need to go chasing this game. Joe Cole is currently warming up on the sidelines.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Liverpool get the second half under way.
45' HT: WEST BROM 1 LIVERPOOL 0
West Brom lead at the break thanks to that fantastic strike just before the interval from Zoltan Gera. The Baggies have been on the back foot for most of this first half, with Liverpool looking the likelier side to break the deadlock. Luis Suarez has been a real menace to the home defence, seeing one shot saved superbly by Ben Foster, shooting wide with another effort and also seeing a header go wide when he really should have scored.
45' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Luis Suarez is booked for dissent.
43' GOAL: WBA 1 LIVERPOOL 0
James Morrison's corner is only half-cleared by Daniel Agger, to Zoltan Gera, who chests down the ball on the edge of the area and smashes a volley past Pepe Reina.
41' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Glen Johnson is booked for bringing down Peter Odemwingie.
40' WASTED FREE-KICK
Liverpool win a free-kick 30 yards from goal. Steven Gerrard's initial shot is straight into the wall and Lucas makes a mess of the follow-up.
38' WAY OVER FROM JOHNSON
Suarez shows some more neat skills on the right and when his cross is misplayed by a West Brom defender it falls to Johnson, who is seething after blasting over the crossbar from a good position.
37' QUIET DEBUT SO FAR
We've not seen too much of Joe Allen so far in what is turning into a quiet debut for his new club Liverpool.
34' BAGGIES UNHAPPY AT BORINI
Fabio Borini is down and in need of treatment after colliding with Jonas Olsson. The home players think the Italian made a real meal of that.
33' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who was the last Liverpool manager to win his first league game when in sole charge of the club. The answer? Graeme Souness in April 1991. His Liverpool side beat Norwich 3-0 at Anfield.
31' GLORIOUS CHANCE FOR SUAREZ
Glen Johnson does magnificently with another rampaging run down the left. The England defender's cross is perfectly weighted for Suarez who really should do a whole lot better than nod wide of the post.
29' TOO HIGH FROM OLSSON
Jonas Olsson meets a cross from Shane Long with a firm header that sails over the crossbar.
26' WIDE FROM SUAREZ
West Brom are finding it difficult to cope with Luis Suarez, who again beats his man but this time shoots wide of the post.
24' OLSSON UNSTEADY
Jonas Olsson makes a hash of a long clearance from Pepe Reina and is relieved to see the flag go up for an infringement against Luis Suarez.
23' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
Who was the last Liverpool manager to win his first league game when in sole charge of the club? Answer in a few minutes.
21' SHOT CHARGED DOWN
Martin Kelly tries his luck from 25 yards, but his shot is charged down by Zoltan Gera.
19' SLOW STARTERS
The Baggies have taken just two points from six previous opening Premier League fixtures and have lost their last three.
18' BORINI IN THE THICK OF IT
Fabio Borini is not far away after Glen Johnson goes on a marauding run down the left. Replays showed that the ball had actually gone out of play before the cross was delivered, so that would have been a controversial moment had the Reds gone in front.
17' SUAREZ LOOKING LIVELY
Suarez is looking very lively here. He turns Gareth McAuley inside out but shoots straight at Ben Foster.
15' SWANS OFF THE MARK
If you had money on Swansea's Miguel Michu scoring the first goal of the new Premier League season you are now a very rich man (or woman).
14' GERRARD DENIED
Luis Suarez tees up Steven Gerrard, but Claudio Yacob does his job well and blocks the shot.
13' HOW BAGGIES LINE-UP
Shane Long is ploughing a lone furrow up front, with James Morrison as an attacking central midfielder and Peter Odemwingie wide on the right.
12' REID FREE-KICK DEFLECTED
Steven Reid fancies the free-kick. The veteran tries to curl a shot around the wall, but it comes off the head of Steven Gerrard and goes out for a corner.
11' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Daniel Agger clips the heels of Shane Long not far outside the Liverpool area and is shown the yellow card.
10' FOSTER DENIES SUAREZ
Suarez turns his man superbly and gets in a rasping shot that is beaten away by Foster.
9' LONG GOES CLOSE
Lucas slips, letting in Shane Long, whose attempted chip goes over Pepe Reina but drops the wrong side of the crossbar.
8' KENNY WHO?
The travelling Liverpool fans are currently singing "There's only one Brendan Rodgers".
6' HOW THEY LINE UP
Jose Enrique is not playing for the visitors because of a minor knock, so Glen Johnson has switched to left-back with Martin Kelly on the right side of defence.
5' DOWNING LOOKING DANGEROUS
Downing beats his man down the left and gets in a superb cross, which Olsson clears ahead of Borini.
4' PROUD DAY FOR STEVIE G
The England midfielder is captaining Liverpool for the 250th time today.
3' RIDGEWELL GOES CLOSE
That's better from West Brom. Liam Ridgewell overlaps down the left and cuts inside before getting in a left-foot shot that is not far away from Pepe Reina's right-hand post.
2' EARLY BAGGIES CORNER
Lucas slices a clearance and concedes an early corner, but a tame cross is easily booted away by Agger.
1' HERE WE GO
West Brom get the game under way.
0' TEAM NEWS
Jonas Olsson has been passed fit for West Brom and starts for the home side, as does James Morrison, who was also doubtful with a knock. Liverpool hand full debuts to Joe Allen in central midfield and Fabio Borini in attack, with Andy Carroll having to be content with a role on the bench.

0' PREVIEW
Two teams with new managers but very different expectations meet at the Hawthorns on the opening day of the Premier League's 21st season. Is it the dawn of a glorious new era for fallen Anfield giants Liverpool, who parted company with the legend that is Kenny Dalglish after a league season that utterly collapsed following their Carling Cup final victory over Cardiff City on penalties? There is no doubt Brendan Rodgers will get the Merseysiders playing football that is pleasing on the eye, but will he be given the time needed to undertake the major rebuilding exercise that is required? Steve Clarke lost his job as assistant manager at Liverpool as part of the clear-out following the departure of King Kenny. Rather than being out of a job, he quickly found himself filling the first managerial hotseat of his career (if we discount the one game he took charge of Newcastle for between the sacking of Ruud Gullit and the appointment of Bobby Robson) as West Bromwich Albion came calling. Only football – or fate – could dictate that the first competitive fixture of his tenure would be against the club who so recently deemed him surplus to requirements. It is easy to think of this match as perennial strugglers against a top-four power, but let's not forget that only two places and five points separated these two sides last season. Today's game kicks off at 1500BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Fabio Borini has really impressed for Liverpool in their pre-season outings and West Brom will have to keep a close eye on him if he gets the start. The Italian aside, the visitors will be relying on the usual suspects – if Brendan Rodgers can get the likes of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez back to the absolute peak of their powers then the Reds can challenge for a place in the top four. Otherwise the best they can hope for again is a place in the Europa League, and who wants that? West Brom's danger man remains the enigmatic Peter Odemwingie. The Nigerian can be anonymous for 89 minutes but is capable of turning any game with one moment of brilliance, and he netted the winner against Liverpool at Anfield the last time these sides met back in April.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 57 wins to 30 by West Brom and 33 games being drawn. At The Hawthorns, Liverpool have 24 wins to 20 by West Brom, with a further 16 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match at The Hawthorns last season on October 29 finished in a 2-0 win for the visitors, with goals from Charlie Adam (ninth-minute penalty) and Andy Carroll (45). Indicative of how Liverpool's season nosedived late on, the Baggies gained revenge with a 1-0 win at Anfield on April 22 with Peter Odemwingie (75 minutes) getting the lone goal. Liverpool have won nine of the last ten meetings between the sides in the West Midlands. In the Premier League era they have won five of six, scoring 17 goals and conceding none in those victories. Among those wins were back-to-back 6-0 and 5-0 thrashings handed out in 2003 and 2004 respectively.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
West Brom will give late fitness tests to Scotland midfielder James Morrison and Sweden defender Jonas Olsson after both suffered minor injuries in their countries' respective friendly fixtures in midweek. New signing Markus Rosenberg is short of fitness and Graeme Dorrans is also unavailable with his daughter in hospital suffering from meningitis. Shane Long has declared himself fit despite missing the Republic of Ireland's friendly match with Serbia in midweek. New signings Fabio Borini and Joe Allen are both in line to make their debuts for Liverpool at some stage, though former Swansea midfielder Allen is likely to start on the bench having only joined in the past week. Joe Cole is available for selection having recovered from the hamstring injury he picked up against FC Gomel in the Europa League.
0' PRE-SEASON FORM GUIDE
West Brom lost to Swedish side Malmo in their opening pre-season match, but their first team are unbeaten since, and recorded comfortable wins at Walsall and, most recently, Nottingham Forest, in their last two outings. Liverpool beat Bayer Leverkusen in their final warm-up game, but they already have some competitive football under their belt having beaten Belarus side FC Gomel home and away in the Europa League without conceding a goal.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Phil Dowd, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2001. The man from Stoke-on-Trent showed 105 yellow cards in 28 games last season, the second most among Premier League officials and he had a higher yellow cards per game ratio (3.79) than anyone else. He also dismissed three players and awarded more fouls than any other referee. Dowd's last match in charge of Liverpool saw them beaten by Chelsea at Wembley in the FA Cup Final. His assistants today are Scott Ledger and Harry Lennard, while Neil Swarbrick is the fourth official.
