Wigan Athletic vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' WIGAN 0 CHELSEA 2
Turns out this one was decided in the first six minutes after all. Chelsea had a dream start when Eden Hazard showed sumptuous skill to play in Branislav Ivanovic to open the scoring just two minutes. A few minutes later, it was Hazard's initiative again that led to the second goal, as he teased Ramis inside the box to draw a foul and win a penalty. Frank Lampard converted, leaving Wigan faced with a Kilimajaro-sized mountain to climb. The home side did their best to respond in the remainder of the half, but were met by an accomplished Chelsea back line who were all too happy to soak up any attempted pressure. Chances flowed more frequently at both ends in the second half as Wigan pushed harder and Chelsea tried to pick them off. Ramis slightly made amends for his earlier blunders with a goal-line clearance, and as for chances to get the Latics back into it, substitutes Jordi Gomez and Arouna Kone both had opportunities that could have been taken better. All in all it was a comfortable start to Chelsea's campaign, while Wigan will obviously be massively disappointed to throw away the game so early on despite showing signs of what we know they can produce later on in the game.
90' GAME OVER
Chelsea have won 2-0 against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.
90' PROBABLY THE LAST CHANCE
Emmerson Boyce heads a Maynor Figueroa cross tamely over. One minute left to play now.
90' GOMEZ SHOOTS WIDE
Jordi Gomez and Arouna Kone play three passes between them prior to Gomez skewing a shot a fair few yards wide.
88' WOULD HAVE BEEN MAGICAL
Branislav Ivanovic ventures forward from full-back and exchanges an exquisite one-two with Oscar - the young Brazilian changing feet and dinking the ball masterfully into the box for his team-mate to run on to. Ivanovic then tries to square to Torres for the finish but his pass is cut out.
87' LUIZ HEADER
Ali Al Habsi saves a diving header from David Luiz at the other end as Wigan Athletic leave themselves exposed.
85' DOUBLE CHANCE
Well, seemingly there will be more golden chances for Wigan Athletic! Victor Moses cuts in from the left and feeds Arouna Kone, whose finish from yards out is straight into Petr Cech. The ball then falls for Jordi Gomez to fire over with an overhead kick.
84' BIG CHANCE
Arouna Kone meets a fizzed corner from Jordi Gomez at the near post and heads a glorious chance wide. I don't envisage many more opportunities like that for Wigan inside the last six minutes.
82' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Roberto Martinez swaps Juan Mata for Raul Meireles - the Spaniard will obviously be feeling knackered what with playing in the Euros and the Olympics this summer. Arouna Kone wasn't far away from seizing on a loose John Terry back pass moments ago.
80' FINAL THROW OF THE DICE
Roberto Martinez uses his final substitution to bring on Ben Watson in place of James McArthur. I don't see Watson as a catalyst to start a remarkable Wigan Athletic recovery, in all honesty.
77' SEEING OUT THE GAME
Chelsea are knocking the ball around with ease and composure as we approach the final ten minutes. No team has been better in these situations in recent Premier League history.
74' CECH SAVES
Jordi Gomez drives fiercely past the wall and into the arms of Petr Cech diving to his right. Cech was always going to make the save, although a nick off the wall would have made Gomez's effort difficult to keep out.
73' LAMPARD FORTUNATE
Frank Lampard is lucky not to be carded for a foul on Jordi Gomez that sees him get nowhere near the ball. Wigan Athletic now have an opportunity from a free kick here.
70' FLAG WAS UP
Maynor Figueroa flights in a delicous aerial ball for Jordi Gomez to surely head in unmarked, but he heads well wide. The substitute wasn't to know that the linesman would raise his flag simultaneously.
68' FIRST ACTION FOR OSCAR
A very boyish-looking Oscar gets the better of Ramis and sends a low shot across goal.
66' ANOTHER NEW FACE INTRODUCED
Now it's Wigan Athletic who introduce a new signing to the Premier League in the shape of Arouna Kone. Franco Di Santo is the man taken off.
63' NEW SIGNINGS EXCHANGED
Eden Hazard is withdrawn having impressed on his debut, giving fellow young signing Oscar the chance to make his.
63' WIGAN RESPOND
That man Victor Moses leads an immediate Wigan response, charging forward and delivering a dangerous ball across goal that John Terry defends.
63' OFF THE LINE
Ramis won't fully make ammends for his earlier errors in this game, but he saved his team from conceding another goal nonetheless. Ryan Bertrand flicks a Juan Mata ball forward into the path of Fernando Torres, who goes on to slip his finish past Ali Al Habsi. Ramis gives chase, however, and clears spectacularly off the line.
60' AMBITIOUS EFFORT
Mike Jones plays the advantage after Maynor Figueroa is fouled by Branislav Ivanovic. Victor Moses darts forward and aims an attempted curler across goal, but Petr Cech doesn't have to make a save.
59' DRAGS WIDE
Gary Caldwell lofts a ball perfectly into the feet of Franco Di Santo, who takes on a defender before dragging wide past the near post.
56' YELLOW CARD
James McArthur is quite rightly cautioned for a tackle from behind on Frank Lampard.
55' END TO END
A dainty flick from Ryan Bertrand kickstarts a Chelsea move that ends when Frank Lampard dallies in possession just inside the area. Wigan Athletic break and Victor Moses leaves Branislav Ivanovic on his backside down the left flank, but his cross doesn't find Franco Di Santo.
52' AWFUL FINISH
David Luiz picks out Fernando Torres surging forward. The ball then falls fortunately for an unmarked Ashley Cole, who skies over with a rushed first-time attempt from inside the box.
50' MOSES MOVES INSIDE
Gomez's arrival sees Victor Moses support Franco Di Santo up front in a more central role.
48' FORCED CHANGE
Jordi Gomez enters the fray as Shaun Maloney limps off with a thigh injury.
47' NO BOOKING
Franco Di Santo's reckless challenge through the back of John Terry goes unpunished by Mike Jones.
46' POSITIVE START
A Shaun Maloney free kick is headed clear before Antolin Alcaraz loops a ball back in for Franco Di Santo. Frank Lampard is there to make an important block.
46' SECOND HALF
Both sides are unchanged as Chelsea kick off the second period.
45' WIGAN 0 CHELSEA 2
It was a perfect start for Chelsea that could result in a perfect start to this season. New signing Eden Hazard showed he isn't phased by his first start in the Premier League by turning Ramis inside out and setting up Branislav Ivanovic to net the opener just two minutes in. Seemingly buoyed by his superb early contribution, Hazard defeated Ramis with his trickery again two minutes later, drawing the Wigan new man into a foul inside the area to win a spot kick that was converted by Frank Lampard. Chelsea then decided not to go for the jugular but instead to keep a firm hold of their lead and not take unnecessary risks. Offensive pressure from Wigan inevitably came, only to be met a solid defensive display from the visitors. Petr Cech only had to properly deal with a cross-cum-shot from Victor Moses from distance, then Franco Di Santo never looked confident in converting when he was handed a golden opportunity late on in the half. Stay tuned for full second half commentary coming up soon.
45' HALF TIME
Shaun Maloney knocks a free kick straight at Petr Cech, seconds before Mike Jones blows for half time.
45' CHANCE WASTED
Maynor Figueroa looks up and spots Franco Di Santo, playing him through on goal with a well-timed pass. Di Santo isn't known for his goalscoring, though, and shows why when a sloppy first touch is followed by a meek finish that comes to late. Petr Cech has his angles covered and David Luiz mops up.
43' GREAT SKILL
Victor Moses is fed on the right flank by Gary Caldwell, and flicks cheekily over Ashley Cole's head before rushing onwards and whipping in a cross.
40' SOAKING IT UP
There's no real urgency for Chelsea to force anything going forward, hence the creeping tide of pressure from Wigan Athletic. The way Roberto Di Matteo's men are holding firm suggests the manager has little reason to make any alterations to his tactics yet.
37' CROSS SHOT
Victor Moses drills in a cross-cum-shot from the right. Petr Cech is equal to it and pushes the ball out for a corner.
34' HARSH BOOKING
Shaun Maloney reacts excessively to a slight push in the back from David Luiz, who is booked.
31' UNDER CONTROL
The aerial approach doesn't look like it will bother this Chelsea back line too much. More crosses cause little concern to the visitors before they bring the ball back upfield yet again.
28' TERRY LIMPING
John Terry is clutching his leg and limping gingerly. I wouldn't like to be the one who takes the Chelsea skipper off against his will, however.
26' CORRECT CALL
Big appeals go up from fans behind the goal as Petr Cech is close to handling the ball just outside the area. I think the officials got that one right.
25' HAZARD BRIGHT
More stout defending from Chelsea is followed by an explosive run forward by Eden Hazard, who makes short work of a bamboozled James McArthur. He's going to be one to watch this season, as we already know.
22' ALMOST IN
A neat little ball from Juan Mata out on the left is close to being latched onto by Fernando Torres, but Ali Al Habsi gets there first.
21' HOLDING FIRM
Torres performs his defensive duties well to head away a Shaun Maloney free kick. A series of crosses from left and right are subseqently defended effectively.
19' HEADS WIDE
Emmerson Boyce delivers a teasing cross from the right, and Franco Di Santo gets between two defenders to head narrowly wide.
18' NO FOUL
Fernando Torres skins Gary Caldwell for pace, then Antolin Alcaraz is fortunate to get away with an old-fashioned shoulder barge on the Spaniard right on the edge of the box.
15' KEPT AT BAY
The home side are doing what they can to respond to a disastrous start, although Petr Cech is still yet to be properly tested. A Shaun Maloney corner is dealt with before Ramis overhits a cross from a similar area.
12' FIGUEROA AN AVENUE
Maynor Figueroa is trying to be a creative figure for Wigan Athletic with his raids down the left. Petr Cech has to be alert to deal with his second cross delivered in ten seconds.
10' BOOKING
Latics captain Gary Caldwell is deservedly booked for going right through the legs of Eden Hazard. Welcome to the Premier League, Eden!
9' TRYING TO RESPOND
Wigan Athletic put some mild pressure on the Chelsea back line primarily through Shaun Maloney and Maynor Figueroa, which is no way near enough to unlock the Blues defence. Figueroa has a harmless shot blocked by John Obi Mikel before his side lose the ball again moments later.
6' GOOOOOAL!
Frank Lampard's penalty isn't great in terms of placment, but the power behind it sees it go in despite Ali Al Habsi guessing the right way (his right).
5' PENALTY
What an explosive start to this game! Eden Hazard proves too tricky for Ramis once again, who brings him down inside the box to concede a penalty.
2' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Chelsea launch a counter-attack from deep. New man Eden Hazard turns Ramis beautifully before slipping an onrushing Branislav Ivanovic through on goal, and he makes no mistake with his finish.
2' GOOOAL!
Chelsea have an early lead through Branislav Ivanovic!
1' AWAY WE GO
Wigan Athletic get the game underway at the DW Stadium.
0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
Chelsea also field just one of their new signings in the form of the form of Eden Hazard. Ryan Betrand comes in for illness-stricken Ramires. Full lineup: Cech; Ivanovic, David Luiz, Terry, Cole; Lampard, Mikel; Hazard, Mata, Bertrand; Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Cahill, Ferreira, Essien, Meireles, Oscar, Sturridge
0' WIGAN TEAM NEWS
Reported Chelsea target Victor Moses is included as expected, and Ivan Ramis is the only new signing fielded in the starting XI by Roberto Martinez. Full lineup: Al Habsi; Boyce, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Figueroa; Maloney, McArthur, McCarthy, Ramis, Moses; Di Santo. Subs: Pollitt, Kone, Jones, Crusat, Watson, Gomez, Boselli.
0' MAN IN BLACK
Mike Jones is the referee for this one. The Chester-based official dished out 112 bookings and nine red cards in 33 games spanning all competitions last season.
0' DEBUTS FOR DUO
Eden Hazard and Oscar are set to make their Premier League debuts. Branislav Ivanovic is eligible as his red card picked up in the Community Shield no longer warrants a suspension, but Marko Marin may miss out with a hamstring injury.
0' MOSES SHOULD START
Victor Moses is in Wigan's squad and is likely to start, despite the strong interest in him from opponents Chelsea. Ivan Ramis and James McCarthy are doubts with hamstring and back problems.
0' BACK GUNNING FOR THE TITLE?
Regardless of finishing outside the top four last season and being in an apparent transition period, you would surely expect any team that wins the Champions League to be challenging for their domestic title the following season. The youthfulness of the signings made (I hesitate to call them Roberto Di Matteo's signings) do reaffirm the Blues are building for the future, but you don't spend £64 million on Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and Oscar without expecting a considerable immediate return for the forthcoming campaign. Di Matteo better hope they produce the goods along with the rest of his squad if he wants to enter the second year of his contract at the very least.
0' PROGRESSION OR SURVIVAL?
This could be a defining season for Wigan Athletic in the Premier League. Now we know from the final stretch of last season what Roberto Martinez is capable of getting out of his players, the question is whether he can get them to produce it on a frequent basis and have the club finally avoid a relegation scrap post-Christmas. Bar Mohamed Diame and Hugo Rodagella, the latter of who didn't feature hugely in the Latics' resurgence anyway, they've largely got the players to do it, although of course Victor Moses' future is in the balance. New acquisitions to watch out for include Ryo Miachi on loan from Arsenal, and Arouna Kone and Ivan Ramis who have done the business in La Liga.
0' WELCOME
Phew, that was some opening day in the Premier League yesterday, was it not? Shock results, goals flying in, although to be honest we should expect nothing less from this crazy league! The first Sunday 13:30 BST kick off of the new campaign sees Wigan Athletic host European champions Chelsea, and we'll have team news and live commentary right here from 13:00 BST.
