Everton vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: EVERTON 1 MAN UTD 0
Everton are renowned as notoriously slow starters, but not tonight as they get their Premier League campaign under way with a stunning win over the 19-time champions. Everton did what Everton do well. They hounded and harried, worked tirelessly when not in possession and, more surprisingly, used the ball more efficiently and effectively than the visitors in the final third of the field. The all-important goal came just before the hour. Marouane Fellaini rose to thump home a header from a Leighton Baines corner, beating United's stand-in defender Michael Carrick to the ball. Everton deserved their victory, with the irrepressible Fellaini hitting the post in the first half and Leon Osman the crossbar in the second. Steven Pienaar also forced two fine saves from David de Gea. United were strangely subdued, their best chance falling to Tom Cleverley, whose close-range effort was kicked off the line by Phil Jagielka. Robin van Persie only saw action for the last 20 minutes and made little impact. He will have many better nights than this, as will United.
90' UNITED CORNER
Tony Hibbert concedes a corner. Anderson takes, Distin heads away.
90' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Marouane Fellaini goes off to a standing ovation. His replacement is John Heitinga.
90' JUST WIDE FROM ANDERSON
Anderson lets fly with an angled 25-yard drive which is only a couple of yards wide of the far post.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of four minutes of added time.
90' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Nikica Jelavic is replaced by Steven Naismith.
89' TIME RUNNING OUT
Only David De Gea is in the United half at the moment. Can Everton hang on?
87' JELAVIC STRUGGLING
Everton's Croatia striker is down at the moment, receiving treatment for cramp.
85' MAN UTD SUBSTITUTION
Tom Cleverley is replaced by Anderson. It's United's final switch.
83' TAKING THE FIGHT TO UNITED
Tony Hibbert makes the second crunching tackle on Patrice Evra in the space of two minutes. A standing ovation. Everton personified.
81' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Leon Osman is replaced by Seamus Coleman.
80' HOWARD SAVES EVERTON
Van Persie carves out a chance for Kagawa, but Howard is quick off his line to dive at the feet of the Japan midfielder.
78' YOU MUST BE JOKING
There was a feature on Everton's mascot during the week on Sky Sports. He's called Changy, apparently, after the beer brand featured on the Toffees' shirts. With imagination like that, can we can look forward to United's mascot being called DH Ellie after their training kit sponsors, or Chelsea's lion going by the catchy moniker of Sam Sungy?
77' MAN UTD SUBSTITUTION
Nani is replaced by Ashley Young.
74' ATTACK AGAINST DEFENCE
A hopeful defensive punt upfield by Jagielka comes straight back again as the home side have 11 men defending deep inside their own half.
72' YOUR NUMBER'S UP
Jelavic returns to the action. He's now wearing a shirt with no name and no number on the back.
70' JELAVIC A CUT ABOVE
Nikica Jelavic has to leave the field to have a facial wound attended to.
69' HERE'S RVP AT LAST
Robin van Persie is on to make his United debut. Danny Welbeck is the man to make way.
68' OFF THE LINE
Some dodgy Everton defending sees Kagawa tee up Cleverley whose shot hits Jagielka on the line with Howard beaten.
64' SUPER MAROUANE
Marouane Fellaini's in the thick of the action again. Jagielka wins the initial header and the Belgian manages to rise above Vidic to head goalwards, but this one is straight at De Gea.
63' A TOWER OF STRENGTH
Evra delivers a teasing cross from the left, but Distin rises to head the ball away. The Frenchman is a close second to Fellaini in the man-of-the-match stakes.
61' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who scored the decisive goal the last time Manchester United lost their opening game of the season. The answer: Eidur Gudjohnsen of Chelsea.
59' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Marouane Fellaini is impossible to mark at times. Leighton Baines delivered a corner from the right and the big Belgian rose above Michael Carrick to head powerfully past De Gea.
58' GOAL: EVERTON 1 MAN UTD 0
Marouane Fellaini heads Everton in front.
56' ROONEY SHOOTS WIDE
Rooney collects the ball 25 yards from goal and cuts in on his left foot. The England striker cuts across the ball, though, and the shot slices high and wide.
52' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
The last time Manchester United lost their opening game of the season was in August 2004 when they were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea. But who scored the decisive goal? Answer in a few minutes.
50' BACK COME UNITED
Immediately we're down the other end and Jagielka's perfectly-timed tackle denies Welbeck a shooting opportunity.
49' OFF THE CROSSBAR
Everton go so close. Fellaini heads down Hibbert's right-wing cross and Osman smashes a shot that comes back off the underside of the crossbar.
48' GIBSON GOES FOR GLORY
Darron Gibson turns away from Tom Cleverley before launching a shot into the stands.
47' A MAN VERY MUCH IN DEMAND
Robin van Persie was almost swamped by autograph hunters while we were waiting for the two teams to emerge at the start of the second half.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Everton kick off the second half. Neither side has made any changes at the interval.
45' HT: EVERTON 0 MAN UTD 0
It's goalless at the break, which is no great surprise after a fiercely-contested first half which has seen Everton certainly give as good as they got. While United have probably seen more of the possession, it has been the home side that has carried the greater threat. Marouane Fellaini hit the outside of a post from the narrowest of angles early on and Steven Pienaar forced two fine saves from David de Gea in the United goal. The first, a tip-over from a looping header, the Spaniard would be expected to make, but the second, unsighted until the last minute, was as good as you will see in the first week of Premier League action. De Gea also acrobatically kept out a curling free-kick from Leighton Baines. United's main threat came at the end of the half with Wayne Rooney shooting straight at Tim Howard and Danny Welbeck only just wide. Robin van Persie has been a patient spectator so far, but expect to see United's new signing at some stage in the second half.
45' CHANCE SPURNED BY ROONEY
Shinji Kagawa picks out Rooney in the centre, but the former Everton man fails to make proper contact.
44' LONG-RANGE FREE-KICK
Nemanja Vidic is penalised for a foul on Jelavic some 25 yards from goal. A sweetly-struck curling effort from Baines draws a top-class save from De Gea.
41' REACTION SAVE
Fellaini nods down the ball for Osman, who turns and shoots powerfully goalwards. The effort is too central, though, and De Gea makes a good reaction save.
38' ROONEY DISAPPOINTED
Evra's cross from the left falls at the feet of Rooney. He turns crisply, but shoots low, straight at Howard. Moments later Welbeck shoots fractionally wide, and United want a penalty for a tug by Jagielka. Mr Marriner disagrees.
33' GREAT SAVE BY DE GEA
A sustained spell of Everton pressure ends with Pienaar curling a shot towards goal. It comes through a ruck of bodies and De Gea does brilliantly, having seen it so late, to paw the effort to safety. Top, top save.
31' PIENAAR'S RADAR GOES AWRY
Fellaini chest traps the ball down for Pienaar, whose first-time drive is about eight yards wide of goal.
29' SAVE FROM HOWARD
Steven Pienaar clips the heels of Paul Scholes and United have a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Rooney is over the ball and curls a right-footed effort to Howard's left. The goalkeeper makes a diving save, but it looked like it was going wide anyway.
28' CARLTON, HEY CARLTON
That long-range header from Pienaar reminds me of a goal Carlton Palmer scored at that end of the ground during his Sheffield Wednesday days. It's the only header I've seen scored from outside the box.
26' DE GEA BEING KEPT BUSY
Some fine first-touch football from the home side puts Jelavic in, but again the angle is acute and De Gea saves. Moments later, the United goalkeeper tips over a header from Pienaar from all of 16 yards.
24' WELL WIDE FROM NANI
Welbeck leads a United breakout which ends with the ball at the feet of Nani some 30 yards from goal. A dipping drive from the Portugal winger goes well wide of the post.
21' SOLID AT THE BACK
United create a chance after a very patient build-up. Welbeck sees a first effort blocked by Distin and a second by Jagielka as the Everton backline holds firm.
18' AERIAL ONSLAUGHT
Under great pressure from Marouane Fellaini, David de Gea manages to claw away a free-kick from wide on the right. The goal is open as the goalkeeper lies injured on the floor, but Pienaar shoots horribly wide from 25 yards.
15' FELLAINI HITS THE POST
Fellaini does magnificently to escape the attentions of Valencia and Carrick and muscles his way in from the left towards goal. The angle narrows and he shoots against the left-hand post from point-blank range.
14' TEN OUT OF TEN
Sylvain Distin has not put a foot wrong for Eveton in the first quarter of an hour.
13' MAN UTD BOOKING
Paul Scholes clatters former team-mate Darron Gibson from behind and that's a clear yellow-card offence.
12' POINT-SCORING MACHINE
Having seen the highlights of Shinji Kagawa in action for his former club Borussia Dortmund, if you haven't got him in your fantasy football team you may end up regretting it.
9' THREAT FROM ROONEY
Rooney gets clear just for a second down the inside-right channel, but again Everton's defence are quick to cover and the danger is gone. Paul Scholes shoots from long range, but that's easy for Howard.
7' SLOW STARTERS BUT ON A ROLL
Everton lost eight of their first 14 Premier League matches last season, but were unbeaten in their final nine league matches last term.
6' EARLY EVERTON CORNER
Nikica Jelavic wins Everton the first corner of the match. Baines delivers from the right, but the ball goes out for a goal-kick, with Jelavic claiming he was wrestled to the ground by Antonio Valencia. The Croatian has a point.
5' NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
New Everton signing Kevin Mirallas, the top scorer in the Greek League last season, was paraded before the Goodison fans before kick-off.
4' MAN UTD BOOKING
Nani catches Leighton Baines a fraction late and is shown the yellow card.
3' DISTIN TO THE RESCUE
Nani looks like he might be in down the right here, but Distin shows great pace to get across and snuff out the danger.
2' WELL WIDE FROM OSMAN
Steven Pienaar wins an early free-kick for Everton wide on the left. Baines pumps the ball into the area, but Osman heads miles wide.
1' HERE WE GO
Everton get the game under way, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TONIGHT'S TEAMS
Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Osman, Gibson, Neville, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jelavic. Subs: Mucha, Heitinga, Naismith, Gueye, Barkley, Coleman, Anichebe. Man Utd: De Gea, Valencia, Carrick, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Cleverley, Scholes, Kagawa, Rooney, Welbeck. Subs: Lindegaard, Da Silva, Anderson, Berbatov, Young, van Persie, Wootton. 0' RVP ON THE BENCH
Robin van Persie is only on the bench for United, with Sir Alex deciding to partner Danny Welbeck with Wayne Rooney. Another new recruit, Shinji Kagawa, is handed his full debut. Michael Carrick will start in central defence alongside Nemanja Vidic, who plays his first competitive match since December. Marouane Fellaini and Darron Gibson have both been passed fit for Everton. New signing Steven Naismith is among the substitutes.
0' PREVIEW
Robin van Persie is in line to make his Manchester United debut as Sir Alex Ferguson's side travel to Goodison Park on Monday night to conclude the opening round of fixtures in the Barclay's Premier League. United fans go into each and every season assuming they are going to win major honours, but it's fair to say that with the arrival of RVP in a £24million deal from Arsenal this air of expectancy among the Old Trafford faithful has been ramped up to a whole new level. With the emergence of upstart neighbours Manchester City last season, United faced the real possibility of not even being the best team in their own city, let alone the whole country. The arrival of Van Persie has put all those fears to bed. Not only are the Reds once more the team to beat, but in paying well over the odds for a man who had only months to run on his contract, they have signalled their intent to compete with City both on the pitch and off it. As for Everton, they have had another fairly quiet close season. True, the highly-talented but admittedly injury-prone Jack Rodwell has flown the coup, and Tim Cahill has left for pastures new in New York. But the Aussie looked past his best last season for whatever reason and his loss will not be felt as keenly as it once was. The return of Steven Pienaar on a permanent basis and the arrival of Steven Naismith from Rangers could reinvigorate a team that is always difficult to beat under David Moyes. Let's not forget, either, that Everton effectively denied United the title last season with their 4-4 draw at Old Trafford. Today's game kicks off at 2000BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
All eyes will be on Robin van Persie, of course, and whether or not he starts tonight the prospect of a partnership playing up front alongside Wayne Rooney is a mouth-watering one. The other player United fans are salivating about almost as much as RVP is the attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa, who proved to be a real goal-scoring threat in his time at Borussia Dortmund. It's always entertaining watching Rooney return to his old stomping ground and see how he deals with the fearful stick he always gets from the fans who used to adore him. But Everton have players capable of causing United problems, and no more so than Nikica Jelavic, who scored twice during the damaging draw at Old Trafford at the end of last season. The Croatian hit the ground running following his January move from Glasgow Rangers and with a full pre-season under his belt with his current team-mates he is more than capable of netting 20 goals in the Premier League in 2012-13.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 73 wins to 53 by Everton and 40 games being drawn. At Goodison, Everton have 38 wins to 26 by United, with a further 19 meetings ending up all square. As already mentioned, the last time these sides met was on April 22 in the title run-in, which turned into one of the games of the season. Two goals from Wayne Rooney and others from Danny Welbeck and Nani looked to have United in control at 4-2, only for Nikica Jelavic to score his second of the game seven minutes from time and Steven Pienaar to then snatch a point two minutes later. United had won the first meeting between the sides last season 1-0 on October 29 with a lone goal from Javier Hernandez (19 minutes). Everton have beaten United just once at Goodison in seven attempts (four United wins, two draws). That came on February 20, 2010 when they won 3-1 with goals from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Dan Gosling and Jack Rodwell, none of whom are still at the club.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Everton are likely to hand a debut to new signing Steven Naismith from Rangers, who boasts a hat-trick for his new club among his outings in pre-season. Midfielders Marouane Fellaini (groin) and Darron Gibson (thigh) have both recovered from injury. Sir Alex will be sorely tempted to hand debuts to his new signings Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa and would certainly play both if his side was opening the season against one of the Premier League also-rans at home. Everton away, though, is about as tricky as they come. United have problems in defence with Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans (both foot) and Phil Jones (back) are all ruled out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Andre Marriner, who was appointed to the select group of referees in 2005. The West Midlands whistleblower showed five red cards (none to either of these two teams) and administered 75 cautions in his 22 Premier League games last year. Marriner had an excellent season last year and his cool head earned him the title-deciding match between Manchester City and Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium back in April. Marriners's assistants today are Scott Ledger and Mick McDonough, while Anthony Taylor is the fourth official.
