Chelsea vs. Reading
Minute Commentary
90' WHAT A GAME
Well, what a tie that was. Chelsea have won but they were made to work for it by Reading. The home side were the better team early on, pressing forward and showing plenty of attacking threat. They took the lead when Gunter tripped Hazard in the box and Lampard did what he does best, scoring the penalty. Reading pressed forward and equalised through Pavel Pogrebnyak, before taking the lead through a Danny Guthrie free kick which Cech really should have stopped. Reading continued to press until the break, and went in as the happier side. However Chelsea came out and attacked with intent, equalising through A low Gary Cahill drive which Federici should have stopped. Torres put the home side ahead from an offside position, and it seemed as if that was how the game would end. However, Federici went up to attack a corner, allowing Chelsea to counter and Hazard to set up Ivanovic. A scoreline that was expected, but a game that was thoroughly enjoyable. Chelsea 4, Reading 2.
90' FULL TIME
And with that, the referee ends the game. At full time, Chelsea have beaten Reading by four goals to two.
90' SIMPLE STUFF
Nothing that Reading could do there. Adam Federici comes up for a corner, but Chelsea clear it to Torres, who plays it wide to Hazard. Chelsea find themselves in a three-on-one situation with Chris Gunter the only defender and Hazard selflessly plays it to Ivanovic, who slots home. Chelsea 4, Reading 2.
90' GOOOOAAAAALLLLL
CHELSEA PUT THE ICING ON THE CAKE!
90' ALMOST!
The ball is deflected out by Terry and Reading have a corner. How they wish Pavel Pogrebnyak was still on the pitch.
90' FREE KICK
Reading have a late free kick 30 yards from goal. Could there be another goal in this yet?
90' LATE PRESSURE
Reading are coming forward, but it seems to be too little, too late for the Royals.
90' INJURED
Gary Cahill is down following an aerial clash and needs some treatment. An extra minute of added time is signalled because of it.
89' ADDED TIME
Four minutes are signalled by the fourth official.
89' PRESSURE
Chelsea look hungry for one more, and Reading almost seem powerless to stop them. They will be glad that the time is nearly over.
87' WINDING DOWN
The game is coming to an end, and it looks as if Chelsea will top the Premier League table.
85' FINAL READING SUBSTITUTION
Garath McCleary leaves the field to be replaced by Hal Robson-Kanu, in a reverse change from the Stoke game.
84' CHELSEA CHANGE
Raul Meireles comes on for Juan Mata in the final Chelsea substitution.
84' TIRED
Reading, who have looked so impressive throughout this game, suddenly look tired and like a beaten side.
81' AWFUL DECISION
Well, Chelsea are ahead, but they really shouldn't be. The midfielders play the ball around neatly before playing it to Mata, who feeds Cole on the left. Instead of shooting, he plays it across to Torres, who taps home. Even the Chelsea players think Torres is offside, but the referee awards the goal and the fans can't believe it. Chelsea 3, Reading 2.
81' GOOOAAAALLLL
CHELSEA TAKE THE LEAD THROUGH FERNANDO TORRES!
80' WIDE
Ivanovic plays it to Mata in the box, but his shot rolls wide of the left-hand post.
79' GREAT ADVERT
This game has been a great demonstration of how good the Premier League can be. A newly promoted side going toe-to-toe with the European champions and giving them a good go.
77' READING CHANGE
The impressive Pavel Pogrebnyak leaves the field, with Noel Hunt taking his place. It was Hunt's brother Stephen who injured Petr Cech six years ago.
77' CHANCE
Sturridge plays it out to the overlapping Ivanovic, but his low cross is hurredly cleared by the Reading defence.
75' TENSE
This game is getting nervy. Both sides are looking for a winner, and at the moment Chelsea look favourites. Reading won't give up without a fight though.
73' COMING BACK
Reading are looking to restore their lead and are coming forward, but Chelsea have come to life and seem more than equal.
71' READING CHANGE
Jem Karacan, who is making his return from a broken leg, leaves the field in a swap with Adam Le Fondre.
70' ANOTHER ERROR
Well, all the pressure for Chelsea has paid off, but you have to feel that Federici was at fault again. Mata does well on the left wing to hold the ball up and play it back inside, with Lampard knocking it on to Cahill. The former Bolton man hits a low shot from 25 yards, and it squeezes under Federici's body and into the net. Another goalkeeping error. Chelsea 2, Reading 2.
69' GOOOOAAAAALLLL
GARY CAHILL EQUALISES FOR CHELSEA!!!!
69' CHELSEA CHANGE
Daniel Sturridge comes on for John Obi Mikel. Chelsea really are throwing everything forward here.
68' CLASH
Hazard is caught by Gunter, but the Chelsea man bundles into Jem Karacan on the way down and the Turkish midfielder seems hurt.
66' PRESSURE
Wow. Chelsea should be level here. Torres holds the ball up in the box before giving it to Ivanovic, before Oscar and Cole both have shots which are charged down.
65' BOOKING
Pavel Pogrebnyak is cautioned for holding back Ashley Cole. Deserved.
64' MISSING MAN
Chelsea are beginning to look as if they need Dider Drogba back. There just isn't anyone to tuck the ball away.
62' EFFORT
Oscar drives in low from the edge of the 'D' but Federici gathers it with ease.
61' SAME AGAIN
This half is turning into a carbon copy of the first. Chelsea have had much of the pressure, but Reading have remained patient and are now beginning to come forward.
60' OUCH
Terry and Pearce clash in the air, but the Chelsea captain lands awkwardly and needs some treatment.
59' NOT HAPPY
Eden Hazard and Ian Harte clash, with the Reading man not happy that the foul is given against him.
58' BOOKING
Jem Karacan is penalised for a late trip on Juan Mata, with the referee showing a yellow card.
57' CHELSEA CHANGE
Oscar takes the place of Ramires, in what is undoubtedly an attacking move by Roberto Di Matteo.
55' OH DEAR
Chelsea surge forward from midfield and the ball comes out to Branislav Ivanovic on the right, but his touch is poor and the ball rolls out for a throw in. The Chelsea fans show their frustration.
54' DEFENDING WELL
Chelsea are pressing forward and showing some good moves, but the Reading defence are holding firm and not giving their opponents a sight of goal.
52' POOR PASSING
As is so often the case in the early season, the ball is not ending up where the passer intends. So far, Chelsea have been more guilty of that than their visitors.
51' NO PENETRATION
Chelsea get the ball into good positions twice in a matter of minutes but there is nobody there to get on the end of it.
49' ON THE BALL
Much like the first half, Chelsea have had all of the ball in the early going. However, they lack a cutting edge and Torres seems short of confidence to put the ball away.
48' PRESSURE
Reading are pressing forward on to Chelsea when the hosts have the ball, not giving them any time or space.
47' HIGH AND WIDE
Chelsea break forward at pace and Torres lays the ball back to Branislav Ivanovic, but the defender's shot is well off target.
46' NO CHANGES
Neither manager has seen fit to alter their sides at this stage.
46' KICK OFF
Reading start the second half.
45' SHOCK ON THE CARDS
Well, not many people would have expected this score before the game. Chelsea are behind at home to Reading, despite having most of the early play. The home side were dominant right up until they won a penalty on 18 minutes. After Gunter tripped Hazard, Frank Lampard stepped up to power home the penalty and put the Londoners ahead. Instead of becoming more defensive, Reading grew into the game and began to attack. The equaliser came when Garath McCleary whipped in a superb cross from the right which Pavel Pogrebnyak powered home from nearly 14 yards. The Royals continued to press and took the lead when Cech had a moment to forget. Danny Guthrie swung in a free kick from the left which beat the wall, and which Cech inexplicably fumbled into the net when he should have gathered with ease. Reading have continued to press, but Chelsea look threatening on the counter. At`the interval it's Chelsea 1, Reading 2.
45' HALF TIME
The referee ends the half. Chelsea 1, Reading 2.
45' HOW DID HE MISS?
Chelsea should be level. Hazard crosses from the right and Torres gets the better of his markers before heading the ball back across goal. Unfortunately he gets it all wrong and the ball rolls the wrong side of the post. Shocker.
45' GREAT CHALLENGE
Jem Karacan does superbly to rob the ball from Frank Lampard as he arrives in the area and shapes to shoot. Any later and that tackle would have led to a penalty.
45' ADDED TIME
Two minutes are signalled by the referee.
44' SO CLOSE!
Reading nearly get a third here. Ian Harte swings in a free kick from deep on the right, and Alex Pearce has all the time in the world to jump and get a head on it. For some reason he pulls out at the last minute, but the Reading fans will wish he didn't - any contact would have lead to an almost certain goal.
43' ON THE BREAK
Chelsea are trying to hit Reading on the counter, but every time they do the Royals get the ball back and press forward again.
41' CARBON COPY
Garath McCleary sends in another cross aimed at Pavel Pogrebnyak, but this time Gary Cahill gets across to nod it out for a corner.
41' POOR
John Obi Mikel plays it to Eden Hazard on the edge of the area, but the Belgian's shot sails way over the bar.
40' SLOWING
The game is now being played in the middle of the pitch. Reading seem the speedier of the two sides, but Chelsea have the quality.
38' PASS AND MOVE
Reading are having a lot of joy down the right flank, this time trying to feed Chris Gunter before the ball is cut out by Ashley Cole.
37' CLASH
Pavel Pogrebnyak and Branislav Ivanovic battle out wide, and the referee has a word with both of them. No cards shown, however.
36' OVER
Juan Mata bends in a free kick from near to the left corner flag, but John Terry's header sails over the bar.
33' CROWDED OUT
Hazard crosses for Torres in the box, but the Spain striker can't get his header off due to some vigilant defending.
33' GOOD PASSING
Pavel Pogrebnyak feeds Jobi McAnuff on the edge of the box, but instead of coming forward he tries to shift the ball to his right foot, allowing Chelsea to clear.
32' SHELL-SHOCKED
Stamford Bridge went silent for a moment just then. Not for a second did the Chelsea faithful expect to be behind, especially to a newly promoted team like Reading. There's still a long way to go in this game yet.
30' WHAT A HOWLER
Adam Federici had one at the weekend, now Petr Cech has an absolute nightmare. Danny Guthrie bends in the free kick from the edge of the box, and just as Cech should collect with ease, the ball bounces out of his arms and into the net. What a shocker. Chelsea 1, Reading 2.
30' GOOOOAAALLLLL
READING TAKE THE LEAD!!!
29' NAUGHTY
John Terry trips Jobi McAnuff on the edge of the box after a good run from the Reading man. A dangerous position for a free kick, especially with Ian Harte in the side.
28' COMING FORWARD
Chelsea are not happy with conceding the goal and are pushing forward in numbers, trying to restore their advantage.
25' OUT OF NOTHING
Well, this wasn't on the cards, was it? Garath McCleary picks up the ball on the right, exchanges passes with Danny Guthrie, before sending in a peach of a cross. Pavel Pogrebnyak gets to the ball ahead of Gary Cahill and powers a header in from behind the penalty spot, leaving Petr Cech with no chance. Chelsea 1, Reading 1.
25' GOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!
READING EQUALISE!!!!
24' HERE'S THE BOSS
Roy Hodgson is in the stands, keeping an eye on his England regulars. So far they have hardly put a foot wrong.
23' FOUL
Gunter goes in hard on Hazard on the half-way line, leading to a warning from the referee.
21' NEARLY
Reading are nearly caught out here. Cech is able to throw the ball 60 yards upfield to Juan Mata, who is suddenly through on goal. He crosses to the far side of the box for Hazard, who gets his touch all wrong and knocks the ball out for a goal kick.
20' REGROUP
Reading are trying to get hold of the ball in order to exert some influence on the game. Garath McCleary tries to burst forward but is challenged well by Ramires.
18' HAZARD LIGHTS
Well, Reading clearly didn't learn from Wigan's performance at the weekend. Poor, poor defending by Gunter leads to the penalty, which allows Lampard to smash it low and left past the fingers of Adam Federici. Chelsea 1, Reading 0.
18' GOOOOAAAAALLLLL
LAMPARD TUCKS IT AWAY!
18' PENALTY TO CHELSEA!
Eden Hazard bursts into the box and Chris Gunter sticks his leg out. Clear penalty.
17' FIRST EFFORT
Danny Guthrie lobs in a ball from midfield aimed at the head of Pavel Pogrebnyak, but John Terry does well to get across and head clear.
16' HAPPY MAN
Roberto Di Matteo looks very satisfied with his side early on. The London team have dominated and you have to feel that it's only a matter of time before they get a goal.
14' WAKE UP!
Poor defending from Ian Harte. Juan Mata picks the ball up on the right flank and sends in a cross, which Harte should have easily. However, he fails to notice Ramires steaming in and the Brazilian gets the header away, only for Adam Federici to gather.
13' GREAT RUN
Fernando Torres does so well up until the finish. He jinks his way past several Reading defenders, using great strength to do so, before firing in a low shot which rolls wide.
11' FIRST TO THE BALL
Chelsea are stronger, better, faster and sharper than their visitors so far. Not enjoyable viewing for a Reading fan.
10' PRESSING
Chelsea haven't quite started with the same pace that they did against Wigan, but they are turning the screw. Reading seem content to soak up pressure and then try to hit Chelsea on the counter, but will it work against a team of this quality?
8' CHANCE
Ramires bursts from midfield, and instead of playing in Fernando Torres when he was clean through, tries a neat shot from the edge of the area. Adam Federici gets a glove to it.
7' WIN THE MIDFIELD
So Brian McDermott has gone with three in midfield to try and stifle Chelsea's attacking threat. Will it work, or will Pavel Pogrebnyak be isolated up front?
6' ALL CHELSEA
Reading have not had even half a sniff so far. Chelsea are holding the ball well, passing with precision, and the fans love it.
4' IN GOOD VOICE
The fans are cheering the home side on here. The optimism is palpable around Stamford Bridge following their brilliant season last year, and the fans are keen to be a part of it.
3' GOOD MOVEMENT
Chelsea are moving the ball around well and making good runs at the Reading defence. Brian McDermott will be hoping his side are on top of their game, as they do lack pace at the back.
1' EARLY PRESSURE
Chelsea have had all of the ball in the opening stages, and they will be hopeful of grabbing an early goal like they did against Wigan.
1' KICK OFF
Chelsea, in their all-blue kit, kick off from right to left.
0' FACTS AND STATS
So, the odds really are stacked against Reading tonight, aren't they? The Berkshire side haven't beaten Chelsea since 1930, haven't won in London in their last nine Premier League games, and face a Chelsea side who are currently the best in Europe. Chelsea midfield man Frank Lampard, following his goal against Wigan, has scored in 16 different Premier League seasons - quite a feat. The Blues are also unbeaten in 33 against newly promoted sides - Reading really will have to pull it out of the bag if they want something here tonight.
0' BREAKING TEAM NEWS
The hosts make two changes to the side that conquered Wigan at the weekend. David Luiz misses out with a knee injury, meaning Gary Cahill takes his place at the heart of defence, whilst Ramires has recovered from a virus and can replace former Reading loanee Ryan Bertrand. For the Royals, Brian McDermott has gone for not only a change in personnel but a change in tactics. Striker Adam Le Fondre, who scored the equalising goal against Stoke, drops to the bench with Jem Karacan, a central midfielder, returning to the starting line-up after a broken leg. The other change sees Garath McCleary come in on the wing for Hal Robson-Kanu.
0' MCDERMOTT STICKS TO HIS GUNS
For Reading, Brian McDermott has stuck with the nucleus of the side that won promotion last year. Signings such as Pavel Pogrebnyak, Garath McCleary and Chris Gunter have been brought in to complement the side. One difference between the Championship and the Premier League is the speed of the play, and some Reading fans will be concerned that players such as Ian Harte and Alex Pearce cannot handle the pace of some sides. McDermott will have to make sure his team are on top form if they want to get anything out of this today.
0' THE BARCA OF WEST LONDON?
Roberto Di Matteo seems to be setting his side in a similar way to the one that he finished last season with, with three men in the centre of the pitch and one striker, with two wide men who can push forward or drop back when needed. The press over the summer have speculated that Roman Abramovic has instructed Di Matteo to win with flair, a la Barcelona, and the signings of players such as Hazard, Marin and Oscar has done nothing to dispel that notion.
0' READING TEAM NEWS
Reading are without several key members from their Championship winning team. Jem Karacan has not yet recovered from a broken leg, Jason Roberts is suspended, and Jimmy Kebe is a major doubt with a hamstring injury. Garath McCleary could take the place of Hal Robson-Kanu on the wing after an impressive substitute appearance against Stoke, whilst rumours are about that Brian McDermott could spring a tactical surprise in defence to counter Chelsea's flying wingers. Jobi McAnuff could move back to take over from Ian Harte.
0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
Summer signing Marko Marin is still unavailable for Chelsea due to a hamstring injury, but midfield battler Ramires is set to shake off the virus which kept him out of the victory over Wigan. Fernando Torres looks set to continue up front due to a lack of recognised centre forwards, especially after Romelu Lukaku's loan to West Brom. Eden Hazard, so dangerous on his league debut, will cause the Reading defence some problems.
0' PREVIEW
Hello and welcome to this evening's game between Chelsea and Reading. Chelsea will be looking to send out a message to the rest of the league with an impressive victory over a newly promoted side, whilst the Royals will be glad that this fixture has come early in the season when form hasn't settled, increasing their chances of getting something off the European champions.
