West Bromwich Albion vs. Everton
Minute Commentary
90' LONG TIME COMING
Shane Long eventually broke the deadlock to set West Bromwich Albion on their way to a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hawthorns. The Toffees actually started the game the better side but failed to carve out a clear chance and were rattled when Long hit the bar with a first half header. After that Nikica Jelavic and Marouane Fellaini went close for the Toffees with dangerous headers, but as proceedings became increasingly bad-tempered, Long notched the game's first with a simple finish from substitute Peter Odemwingie's 65th-minute cross. The result was sealed in the 82nd minute when Gareth McAuley nodded home Chris Brunt's corner. The Baggies impressively continue their super start, while Everton are halted in their tracks and will need to pick themselves up quickly from this setback.
90' FULL TIME WEST BROM 2 EVERTON 0
That's it for today! West Brom run out comfortable winners over Everton.
90' LOOSE TOUCH
Jelavic picks up McAuley's clearing header and passes left to Mirallas, who has a chance to let fly but takes one touch too many and is dispossessed by Jonas Olsson.
90' WASTEFUL
The Toffees' last chance disappears over the horizon as Pienaar lays it off and Victor Anichebe plays in a horrible cross from the left that sails into touch on the opposite side.
90' FIVE MINUTES
There are to be five minutes of stoppage time in which Everton can chase the game, although where the referee has pulled them from is anyone's guess.
89' HARD MAN
Claudio Yacob has gone down in a heap following a knock from Fellaini. It's a taste of the Argentinian's own medicine; he's put himself about today to say the least.
87' GOALMOUTH SCRAMBLE
Leighton Baines' free kick from the left is headed out but only as far as Jagielka, who drags it back across the face of goal from the back post. Mayham ensues as several bodies throw themselves at the ball, which eventually squirts out for Ridgewell to hoof clear.
85' OUT OF PUFF
It's keep-ball now for the Baggies, while Everton seem to have run out of steam. This could be a problem for David Moyes' threadbare squad as the season wears on.
82' GOAL!!! WEST BROM
Albion's second finally arrives as Chris Brunt's perfect corner from the right is nodded home with ease by Gareth McAuley at point-blank range. A sense of calm quickly settles around the Hawthorns as the crowd realise three points are within reach.
82' COPYCAT
Mulumbu then emulates his midfield partner to collect a pass from Odemwingie and blast over the bar from the right-hand edge of the area.
81' YACOB HITS ONE
Yacob controls a Mulumbu pass just outside the Everton box and twists past two challenges to fire a rasping drive a foot wide of the right-hand post. That looked really close.
79' TIME RUNNING OUT
The Baggies are keeping their opponents pinned back at the moment, an impressive feat considering they're defending the lead right now. The boys in blue need to inject some urgency into their play if they want to get anything out of this.
76' SUBSTITUTION
Shane Long has put in a terrific shift today and receives a standing ovation as he makes way for Chris Brunt.
75' GREAT DEFENDING
Long bursts into the Everton half in pursuit of a brilliant ball over the top from Yacob, but Distin stays with him to execute a perfectly-timed challenge as the forward shapes to shoot.
73' SUBSTITUTION
David Moyes makes his third and final throw of the dice, sending Victor Anichebe on for Neville.
71' YELLOW CARD
Things are getting really heated now, aided by the inevitable booking for Fellaini, who kicks out at Mulumbu following a clumsy challenge from the Baggies man.
70' PASS TO NOBODY
Morrison is the man to take the resulting free kick from the left-hand side, only to send it looping over everybody and into touch.
69' YELLOW CARD
Neville is the latest player to pick up a booking, this one for hauling down Mulumbu on the 18-yard line.
68' BARNSTORMING BELGIAN
Kevin Mirallas' super run takes him past three trailing defenders and into the box, but the striker is forced slightly wide and in the end his drive presents a simple save to Foster.
66' YELLOW CARD
Sylvain Distin gets himself in the referee's notebook as he cynically takes out Mulumbu on the Baggies' right flank.
65' GOAL!!! WEST BROM
The breakthrough finally comes as the home side take the lead through Shane Long's first Premier League goal of the season. The move is simplicity itself as Ridgewell plays it down the line for Odemwingie, who strides forward and curls in a super low cross that Long converts from six yards out. We may have a game on our hands now.
64' WHAT A MISS
How on earth did Fellaini miss that one? Mirallas shows some clever play to make space down the right and fires in a low cross that runs free to the Belgian, who leans back to fire way over the bar from eight yards out. Strange considering how lethal he's been of late.
62' SUBSTITUTION
Wednesday night's two-goal hero Kevin Mirallas replaces Naismith.
61' SELF PUNISHMENT
Long charges into the back of Osman and only succeeds in damaging himself, limping away form the clash. No treatment is signalled as yet though.
58' SUBSITUTION
That proves to be Dorrans' last action of the game, the midfielder making way for Peter Odemwingie. That looks like a bold attacking move from Steve Clarke.
57' POOR FREE KICK
The Baggies win a free kick five yards out, and Graeme Dorrans steps up to take it. The Scot fires his effort disappointingly into the wall where Jagielka heads clear yet again.
54' MIGHTY FELLAINI
Jelavic flicks Hibbert's high ball on for Marouane Fellaini, who holds off a clutch of defenders to control the ball on his chest and swivels to drag a low shot just wide of the left-hand post. The Belgian looked like an unassailable oak.
53' SUBSTITUTION
Reid is unable to continue, having taken a knock to the ankle, and is replaced by Billy Jones.
50' NICKED AWAY
Morrison makes his way up the right and plays a delighful cross in towards Long on the penalty spot. The Irishman looks set to score until Jagielka pops up again to take the cross off his forehead.
47' YELLOW CARD
Steven Reid picks up a booking for slamming into Pienaar, while in the meantime Fellaini finally makes his way onto the pitch. No sign of what caused the absence.
46' INVISIBLE MAN
For some reason Maroune Fellaini does not seem to have emerged for the second half, so Everton are currently playing with ten men.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway, with neither team having made any half time changes.
45' EVEN STEVENS
It's been an exciting first half, with both sides putting everything into going for a win and both enjoying decent spells of possession. Everton started the more dominant but couldn't carve out a chance, and first blood went to the Baggies when Shane Long crashed a 29th-minute header off the crossbar. After that Jelavic and Fellaini went close with headers, but it was Tim Howard who maintained the status quo shortly before half time whe the American saved James Morrison's goalbound drive. There's been a few committed tackles and certain tempers are running high, so with any luck we should see some second half fireworks.
45' HALF TIME WEST BROM 0 EVERTON 0
The half time whistle rings out, and it's all square at the break here at the Hawthorns.
45' OFFSIDE
Marc-Antoine Fortune has the ball in the net but was already adjudged to have been offside as he chased a through ball.
45' NO PENALTY
A tangle in the Baggies' box sees Naismith tumble under Yacob's robust challenge, but Jon Moss says nothing doing.
45' TOP STOP
Only a great save from Howard prevents the Baggies from taking the lead just before the break as Morrison sidesteps a pair of challenges and angles a drive towards the near post from inside the area. What a vital stop that could prove.
44' IN THE WAY AGAIN
Morrison and Long conjure up a sprightly forward move, but in the end the Irishman's backheeled final ball is cut out by the stalwart Jagielka.
42' FORWARD THINKING
A storming forward run from Youssouf Mulumbu takes Congolese past three players before being hauled down by the tenacious Fellaini. James Morrison chips the resulting free kick to the back post, where a stretching Olsson directs a header wide of the posts.
39' EASY FOR THE KEEPER
Phil Neville carries the ball to the edge of the box and plays it wide for Naismith, whose dinked cross finds the leaping Nikica Jelavic. The Croat's header is on target but lacks the power necessary to trouble Ben Foster.
39' POOR PASS
Yacob's forward pass finds Mulumbu, who tries an instant through ball to Long. Fortunately for the Toffees the ball goes astray.
36' YELLOW CARD
The Toffees show awesome confidence in defence as first Baines and then Distin step over the ball to deceive their opponents. Moments later such intricacies are forgotten as Hibbert goes in late with a poor tackle on Mulumbu and receives a yellow card for his troubles.
33' WOUNDED SOLDIER
Long is forced to leave the field due to a knock to the head, but is soon able to continue, to the audible relief of the home support.
30' TIT FOR TAT
Everton go mightily close to scoring from a header themselves as Fellaini bursts into the box to get his noggin to a deep cross from Hibbert. The effort looks set for the top corner but in the end just clears the angle of post and bar.
29' OFF THE BAR
Long rattles the crossbar with a firm header from Liam Ridgewell's cross from the left. Howard was rooted to the spot; that was by far the best effort of the game so far.
28' LONG GOES CLOSE
Graeme Dorrans finds a yard of space in midfield and plays a deft through ball between Jagielka and Distin. Shane Long scampers through in pursuit and is a toe-end away from going through on goal.
26' JELAVIC OFF TARGET
Baines wins a free kick as he outwits the lumbering Reid down the left and takes the resulting free kick himself, sending it looping into the area. Jelavic gets his head to the ball but can't direct it goalwards.
25' AWESOME EVERTON
Following that impertinent spell of West Brom pressure, the Toffees have re-established their previous dominance and are stroking the ball around with consummate ease once again. They really are looking an impressive outfit at the moment.
22' AERIAL ASSAULT
West Brom bombard the away goal with a series of crosses into the box, but David Moyes' back line stands firm to get it away time after time. In the end a Yacob shot is almost deflected in by Steven Reid, but Tim Howard reacts well to gather.
19' SUBSTITUTION
In the chaos of that sequence of play, Darron Gibson pulled up almost unnoticed with a hamstring injury; a shame for the former Manchester United man, who had played well so far. Tony Hibbert comes on to replace him.
18' END-TO-END STUFF
The Baggies go straight up the other end and feed Youssouf Mulumbu, who curls an ambitious effort several yards over from just outside the box.
17' PENALTY SHOUT
Nikica Jelavic is almost able to seize on Marouane Fellaini's knock-down in the box, only to be foiled by a last-ditch challenge from Liam Ridgewell. The fans shout for a penalty but get nothing for it.
15' WRONG OPTION
A brilliant sequence of pass-and-move from the away side comes to a conclusion when Pienaar, who started it in the first place, sends a pointless backheel into touch. An instant apology is forthcoming from the sheepish summer signing.
12' WHAT A WASTE
Darron Gibson takes the resulting free kick low to Baines, who hangs up a cross which the Albion defence hack clear. The England left back can do a lot better than that.
10' BOLSHY BAGGIES
This time it's Claudio Yacob who takes an Everton player down, sending the incensed Steven Pienaar crashing to the turf with a pair of hefty hacks from behind. The physio is summoned onto the pitch to give the stricken South African a massage, but again the perpetrator escapes punishment.
7' CRUNCHING TACKLE
Jonas Olsson wipes out the mountainous Marouane Fellaini in the middle of the park with a battering ram of a tackle. No foul is given, and unsurprisingly the Swede comes out of it a bit worse for wear. He seems fine to carry on for now.
4' BLOCKED OFF
A rapid low cross from Leighton Baines is deflected out to Leon Osman on the edge of the box. The diminutive midfielder takes a touch and hits a low drive which is well blocked by Gareth McAuley and runs out for a corner.
3' HONOURS EVEN
Both sides have shown some decent play so far and look set up to attack. The best moment so far has been a decent cross from the West Brom right by Marc-Antoine Fortune which Phil Jagielka stooped to head clear.
1' KICK OFF
We're underway here at Goodison Park, with the Baggies kicking off. Kevin Mirallas is on the bench for Everton, while Jonas Olsson captains West Brom in the absence of Chris Brunt.
0' EVERTON TEAM NEWS
Phil Neville will not miss out despite limping off with a hamstring injury in midweek, while Tony Hibbert is also available after overcoming a stiff neck.
0' WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Steve Clarke has problems in attack, with Romelu Lukaku and Peter Odemwingie struggling to overcome ankle and thigh problems respectively. Jerome Thomas remains sidelined with a hip problem, and new signing Goran Popov has not been registered in time to take part.
0' ONE TO WATCH
Everton's £5.3m summer signing Kevin Mirallas made a dream debut on Wednesday night, scoring twice in the Toffees' 5-0 demolition of Leyton Orient. If David Moyes chooses to play two up front, the former Olympiakos striker could form a devastating partnership with Nikica Jelavic.
0' HEAD OF THE PACK
Several Premier League clubs have been sniffing around Costa Rica left back Bryan Oviedo, but Everton somehow fought their way to the top on transfer deadline day to secure the 22-year-old's signature from FC Copenhagen for a £5m fee. Oviedo can play anywhere down the left if required and already has 13 caps for Costa Rica. The Toffees also swooped for 17-year-old Kilmarnock winger Matthew Kennedy for a nominal fee.
0' POPOV POPS IN
West Brom's one piece of business on transfer deadline day was the signing of Macedonia international Goran Popov on a season-long loan from Dynamo Kiev. There is an option to sign the 27-year-old left back permanently at the end of the season should he create a good impression.
0' REF WATCH
Jon Moss is the man to take charge of this afternoon's encounter. The Leeds-based official is in his second season as a Premier League referee and will be desperate to continue the good impression he has made so far. One challenge to that could be Marouane Fellaini; the brawny Belgian committd the most fouls of any Premier League player last season and is sure to be a handful again today.
0' PREVIEW
It's still early days in the 2012/13 Barclays Premier League season but fans of Everton and West Bromwich Albion are savouring their spots near the summit. How long it can last remains to be seen, but for now both of these enterprising sides can be proud of some impressive performances. The Toffees' pair of wins include a deserved opening-day despatchment of Manchester United, while Steve Clarke marked his first game in charge of the Baggies and his first as a full time manager with an emphatic victory over Liverpool, his employers last season. A win or draw at the Hawthorns today would make this West Brom's best ever start to a Premier League season.
