Swansea City vs. Sunderland
Minute Commentary
90' DETERMINED SWANSEA PEG BACK FLETCHER BRACE
Michael Laudrup may have narrowed the formation and upped the tempo, but his side are still dynamite in possession and they bossed Sunderland for much of the game. However, Martin O'Neill's game plan, where his players sat back and waited for lapses in concentration, nearly paid off after two first-half goals from Steven Fletcher. Wayne Routledge had cancelled out the Black Cats first, but the Fletcher sent his side into a 2-1 lead deep in first half injury time. Swansea went on the front foot in search of the equaliser for much of the second half and got their reward with a Michu header. The home side looked like they would go on to win until Chico's crazy high-footed challenge received a red card and the man advantage allowed Sunderland to see out the remainder of the match.
90' FULL TIME
We end with a draw between Swansea and Sunderland.
90' GREAT TURN
Nathan Dyer is on fire. With his back to the defender, he flicks it round him and chases past to sprint clear. Brilliant stuff.
89' SWANSEA ON TOP
The spell of Sunderland dominance didn`t last long. The home side are now back in control and you wouldn`t think they were the side with ten men.
86' SWANSEA PRESSURE
Nathan Dyer causes panic in the Sunderland defence and the ball drops for Danny Graham, but his shot is blocked. Then the ball drops out for Dyer, but the winger shanks his shot wide.
84' SWANSEA CHANCE
A great ball into the box from a corner and Angel Rangel looks favourite to head home, but he only manages to flick the ball and the chance goes begging.
81' SUNDERLAND POSSESSION
It has taken a Swansea being reduced to ten men, but Sunderland are finally managing to get some time on the ball. Can they get a winner?
78' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Michu comes off for Ki Sung-Yueng, who makes his Premier League debut.
76' WILLIAMS DOWN
The big Swansea centre back is on the floor, but he should be ok to continue as it is just a kick on the calf from Louis Saha.
73' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Alan Tate replaces Wayne Routledge.
71' RED CARD
This is a bizarre decision. Chico makes a silly tackle with a high foot, but no one expects any more than a yellow card until the referee shows the Swansea defender a red card.
68' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
No hat trick for Steven Fletcher as he is replaced by Louis Saha.
67' GOOAALL!!
Three games, four goals for Michu. The midfielder has been a pest to Sunderland all game and now he heads home from Leon Britton's cross. That is an equaliser that Swansea more than deserve.
64' GRAHAM!
Michu curls a great ball into Danny Graham's run, but Craig Gardner gets back to block. It is all Swansea at the moment.
63' JUST OVER
Wayne Routledge finally delivers a telling cross and Michu gets on the end of it, but he headers it into the ground and it bounces up and over.
60' DOUBLE SAVE
Simon Mignolet keeps Sunderland ahead. Jonathan De Guzman's low free kick is palmed away and then the follow up is also kept out by some neat keeping.
58' O'NEILL ANGRY
Chico goes in a little too strong on James McClean using both feet, but the referee does not give a foul. Swansea then sweep forward with the Sunderland winger rolling around on the floor. It's made even worse when the referee blows for a soft foul on a Swansea player.
56' COLBACK GETS LUCKY
Nathan Dyer has really come to life in this second half and he is quick to put pressure on Jack Colback. The full back then gifts possession back to Swansea.
53' GOOD SAVE
Angel Rangel heads the ball down for Nathan Dyer, who turns and hits his shot first time. It's a nice height for Simon Mignolet to palm away. Swansea have started the half full of beans.
50' OVER THE BAR
Swansea send a long corner into the box and it is headed down to the unmarked Leon Britton, but the midfielder leans back and volleys over.
49' SIDE NETTING
Great play between Angel Rangel and Nathan Dyer. The first cross is blocked and the second is deflected into the side netting by David Meyler.
46' SECOND HALF
Away we go again.
45' FLETCHER BRACE STEALS LEAD
In terms of possession it has been all Swansea, but two mistakes in defence have gifted Sunderland the lead as Steven Fletcher repays some of that hefty transfer fee. The first goal was down to an Ashley Williams mistake, which the forward wasted no time in finishing and the second saw Fletcher arrive late at the back post to convert a great free kick from Adam Johnson. In between those two strikes, Wayne Routledge had levelled the scores after some fine possession football ended with a great flicked ball by Nathan Dyer. However, it was Sunderland who went into the break with the lead after that goal deep in injury time.
45' HALF TIME
That goal is the final action of the half.
45' GOOAALL!!
Swansea are left desperately appealing for offside. Adam Johnson sends a curling ball in from the left and Steven Fletcher steals in at the back post to send Sunderland back into the lead.
45' HANDBALL
A chance for Sunderland deep into first half injury time as they have a free kick on the left.
45' POOR CROSS
Michu is a real pain. He again wins a ball with those long legs of his and it sets Swansea away. Unfortunately, the cross from Angel Rangel goes straight out of play.
45' GOOAALL!!
What a brilliantly worked goal. Swansea have not had a sniff so far, but a fine flicked pass from Nathan Dyer finds Wayne Routledge and he smashes home.
44' JUST OVER
Stephane Sessegnon sends a long cross to the back post and right into the path of James McClean's run. The winger takes it first time on the volley and boy does he catch it well, too well as it flies over the bar.
43' POOR CROSS
Wayne Routledge gets some time on the right, but he swings a terrible ball into the box and Sunderland have a goal kick.
41' GOOAALL!!
Swansea concede their first goal of the season. Ashley Williams makes a terrible mistake as he mishits a back pass. Steven Fletcher gets on it quickly and guides the ball past Michel Vorm into the far corner.
38' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
This could be a big blow for Sunderland as Lee Cattermole is forced off. David Meyler is on and will need to get through a lot of work to break down Swansea's attacks.
37' TOO DIRECT
Sunderland are getting some joy when closing down Swansea, but they are then too keen to launch the ball foward when they don`t have the numbers forward to make it count.
34' BRILLIANT TACKLE
Swansea get the ball forward quick and Nathan Dyer is again able to turn on the edge of the box. As the winger sizes up what to do next, in steps Carlos Cuellar to steal the ball from him.
31' GOOD FOUL
Wayne Routledge looks to start a counter attack, but Lee Cattermole decides to stop the attack by fair or foul means. The referee gives Swansea a free kick and gives the Sunderland midfielder a talking to.
28' POOR TOUCH
Steven Fletcher does well to knock the ball into the path of James McClean, but the winger takes an awful first touch and the defender clears.
27' CLOSED DOWN
Stephane Sessegnon picks up the ball on the edge of the box and again looks to run with the ball, but Swansea close him down and the chance is gone.
24' YELLOW CARD
Wayne Routledge beats Craig Gardner, but is then felled by the full back. Gardner is shown a yellow card and rightly so.
23' EASY FOR MIGNOLET
Nathan Dyer finds some space to turn on the edge of the box, but his curling shot ends up in the hands of a static Simon Mignolet.
21' GREAT CLAIM
Adam Johnson swings a cross into the box and it is curling towards goal, but Michel Vorm does brilliantly to jump and catch the ball.
20' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Ben Davies replaces Neil Taylor, who is brought off to a standing ovation.
17' TAYLOR INJURED
It's not looking good for Neil Taylor and the physios are working hard on the full back. There is no way he will be able to continue and Ben Davies will be on to replace him as soon as the defender can be safey carried from the field.
16' OUCH
Craig Gardner gets to the ball before Neil Taylor, but the defender can't pull out of the tackle and collides with Sunderland player. Taylor also looks to have twisted his knee.
13' STILL TIGHT
Swansea are probably just edging it with their possession game, but Sunderland don`t look worried at the moment.
10' GOOD TACKLE
Stephane Sessegnon picks up the ball and drives at the Swansea defence but before he can expose any gaps in steps Leon Britton to win the ball. It has been an interesting start to this game as both sides size the other up.
8' GOOD SAVE
Nathan Dyer wastes no time in running at Jack Colback and races past him on the outside. However, the shot is not strong enough to beat Simon Mignolet.
6' SWANSEA POSSESSION
As you would expect from their reputation the home side are keeping the ball, but they are finding it hard to make it count against a defensive-minded Sunderland. Martin O'Neill's side looked well drilled and up for a battle.
3' PENALTY CLAIMS
Wayne Routledge nicks a ball past Craig Gardner and the Sunderland man drags the winger back, but the referee gives a free kick to the away side.
2' GREAT TACKLE
Michu - playing at the front of a midfield triangle - is quick to close down Lee Cattermole and puts in a great tackle to set Swansea away on an attack.
1' KICK OFF
We are under way in Wales.
0' SUNDERLAND TEAM NEWS
Multi-million pound signings Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher are unleashed on the Premier League today. It is an attacking line-up from Martin O'Neill with Stephane Sessegnon, James McClean, and Sebastian Larsson also in the side.
0' SWANSEA TEAM NEWS
Ki Sung-Yueng will have to wait a little bit longer for his Premier League debut as Michael Laudup keeps faith with the side that thumped West Ham last week. That means my new favourite player Michu keeps his place in the side – will he keep up his goal scoring record?
0' REF WATCH
I am sure you will all join me in wishing Roger East a welcome to the Premier League as this is the referee's first match in charge in the top division of English football. Let's hope we will still be full of charitable thoughts come the final whistle.
0' NEW SIGNING BOOST'S BLACK CATS
With Sunderland's last Premier League outing dating back two weeks – albeit an impressive draw at Arsenal – it is difficult to get a sense of how Martin O'Neill's team will perform this year. The signings of Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher at considerable expense have boosted the Black Cats, but do the pair have the consistent quality to break down Premier League defences.
0' LAUDRUP PLOTTING QUIET EVOLUTION
With two games gone, Michael Laudrup just hasn`t put a foot wrong with new signings Chico and Michu looking like bargains. The new narrower formation has brought benefits in attack and defence; with the ‘goals for' column reading eight and ‘goals against' zero. However, the new manager continues to see room for change with Ki Sung-yueng and Pablo Hernández brought in, although the latter was not signed in time for today's game.
0' SWANSEA 100% CONFIDENT
The Swans have learned to fly under the stewardship of Michael Laudrup, but they had better beware that they don`t wake the slumbering Black Cats, who will be scratching to get back to Premier League action following last week's postponed game. This is the first real test for Swansea and the 100% record of their new manager, but with home advantage and confident on their side, they will feel they can come through with victory.
