Everton vs. Newcastle United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: EVERTON 2 NEWCASTLE 2
Everton are denied a victory which would have taken them third and level on points with Manchester United as a second goal of the game from substitute Demba Ba in the final minute cancelled out what had appeared to be the winner from Victor Anichebe two minutes earlier. The Toffees were left to rue not capitalising fully on a dominant first-half display and also feeling badly let down by the match officials. David Moyes' side were irrepressible in the opening 45 minutes, taking a deserved lead on 15 minutes through Leighton Baines and going close to adding other goals through Kevin Mirallas and Phil Jagielka. Baines cleared off the line from his own team-mate Leon Osman at the other end and Papiss Cisse shot wide when he should have scored. Ba came on at the break for Newcastle and they were transformed. The big Senegal striker levelled himself four minutes after the restart after a fine pass from Yohan Cabaye. The game ebbed and flowed after that, before two major talking points in the closing stages. First Marouane Fellaini had the ball in the net only to be harshly adjudged offside, before Anichebe headed what he thought was a perfectly good winner. The linesman ruled the ball had not crossed the line, though replays suggest he made the wrong call. It was a tight one, admittedly, and his view was obscured by the post, but that will not make Moyes feel any happier.
90' GOAL: EVERTON 2 NEWCASTLE 2
Demba Ba nets his second of the game for Newcastle, collecting a chest-down from substitute Ameobi and slotting between Howard's legs.
89' GOAL: EVERTON 2 NEWCASTLE 1
Victor Anichebe nets a superb goal for Everton, turning and firing home into the corner.
86' FINE SAVE BY HOWARD
Haten Ben Arfa is clear down the inside-right channel but is denied by a sprawling save by Tim Howard.
85' EVERTON BOOKING
Marouane Fellaini is rightly booked for a nasty tackle on Mike Williamson.
83' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Kevin Mirallas is replaced by Steven Naismith.
81' OVER THE LINE BUT NO GOAL
Anichebe thinks he has scored with a point-blank header which replays show was over the line, but the linesman disagrees. Cue more newspaper talk about goal-line technology. Then the referee pulls back play to book Steven Pienaar instead of allowing Newcastle to profit from a three-on-one break. They were two very poor decisions.
77' ONLY JUST WIDE BY OSMAN
Everton have been on the back-foot for most of this half, but they almost get their noses back in front. A lovely flick by Fellaini finds Pienaar and he tees up Osman, who shoots wide from 12 yards.
74' NOT COVERED HIMSELF IN GLORY
You wouldn't exactly lay the blame for Newcastle's goal at the door of Tim Howard, but having seen the replay the Everton goalkeeper was caught a little flat-footed and may feel he should have done better.
71' DISTIN ALERT TO THE DANGER
Ba brings down a long punt from Harper magnificently with his toe-end, a la Dennis Bergkamp, but Distin steals the ball away before the Senegalese can get in a shot.
68' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who was the only man to have managed both of these clubs. It was Gordon Lee. Score one point for a correct answer – which would be enough to take you above Southampton in the Premier League table.
66' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
Many players have turned out for both of these clubs, but only one person has managed both of them. Can you name him? Answer in a few minutes.
64' SO SPORTING FROM HARPER
Steven Taylor's back-pass is underhit and Victor Anichibe is just a fraction away from getting on the end of it. He clatters Steven Harper in the process, but the Newcastle goalkeeper sportingly talks Mike Jones out of producing a yellow card.
62' GOAL DISALLOWED
Marouane Fellaini has the ball in the net and can feel a little hard done by as the flag goes up for offside. Replays show he was probably level with the last defender as he collected the pass from Pienaar. Cisse lobs just over at the other end.
60' A HAIR'S BREADTH AWAY
Baines makes great ground down the left and his cross is just over the head of Fellaini. If only the Belgian's unmistakable perm was half an inch longer…
58' FELLAINI WANTS A PENALTY
Newcastle give the ball away in their own half, but Fellaini can only win a corner. The set-piece from Baines is delivered in the direction of the Belgian, who claims a penaly for a shove, but referee Jones is rightly dismissive of his pleas.
53' LANDMARK GOAL
There have been 22 goals scored in Everton's last seven home matches and that Ba effort was the first one netted by a player from the visiting side. Prior to that Everton had scored 20 at the right end and Tony Hibbert had put through his own goal against Newcastle in May.
50' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Leon Osman was robbed by Yohan Cabaye in midfield and the Frenchman set Ba free with an excellent first-time ball. Ba, who had only been on the field for three minutes, fired across Howard into the far corner.
49' GOAL: EVERTON 1 NEWCASTLE 1
Demba Ba levels for Newcastle.
48' BAINES CATCHING THE EYE
Two people will be more than a little concerned about that rampant Everton display in the first half. One of them will be Newcastle manager Alan Pardew. The other should be Chelsea defender Ashley Cole – his England place will be under serious threat if Leighton Baines goes on playing like this.
47' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Demba Ba has replaced Sylvain Marveaux at the break. That's no surprise.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Newcastle get the second half under way.
45' HT: EVERTON 1 NEWCASTLE 0
Everton lead at the break after as dominant a first-half display as you are likely to see anywhere in the Premier League all season. Newcastle just never got going and were stretched this way and that by an Everton side hell-bent on an early opening goal. It duly arrived in the 15th minute when some marvellous interplay between Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar ended with the England defender scoring with a crisp drive. Kevin Mirallas then shot just wide and Phil Jagielka hit the outside of the post as Everton looked to add to their advantage. Their inability to add a second almost proved costly as Newcastle almost equalised out of nowhere, Papisse Cisse shooting wastefully wide after a defensive error by Phil Neville. Baines, the scorer, was then the hero in his own penalty area when he cleared a Vurnon Anita shot off the line.
45' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
The injured Nikica Jelavic is replaced by Victor Anichebe.
44' PIENAAR SHOOTS WIDE
A mistake from Perch presents Everton with another chance. Pienaar ignores the better-placed Osman and goes for goal himself with a curling shot that goes just wide of the post.
41' HARPER SAVES AGAIN
Ben Arfa presents Mirallas with a shooting opportunity, but Harper deals with it comfortably enough at his near post.
38' OFF THE LINE
A rare Newcastle threat almost brings an equalising opening goal. The ball comes in from the left from Ben Arfa and Anita's close-range effort is kicked off the line by Leighton Baines, who has been outstanding so far. James Perch is cautioned in the ensuing melee.
35' PENALTY CLAIMS
Leon Osman goes down looking for a penalty after a tackle from Yohan Cabaye, but referee Mike Jones rightly dismisses his claims.
32' OFF THE POST
Phil Jagielka collects a knockdown from Jelavic and curls a shot with his right foot that strikes the outside of the upright with Harper beaten again.
30' NEWCASTLE BOOKING
Vernon Anita is cautioned for a high challenge on Tony Hibbert.
29' TIMELY STRIKE FROM BAINES
The time of tonight's opening goal was 14 minutes 44 seconds. Golden goal claims in writing please to Everton FC, c/o Goodison Park.
28' LET-OFF FOR EVERTON
A terrible clearing header from Phil Neville falls invitingly to Papiss Cisse, who volleys narrowly wide of the post. He really should have at least hit the target there.
26' TRAINER ON FOR PIENAAR
Vurnon Anita takes a tumble and falls on to the leg of Steven Pienaar, who goes off for treatment before quickly returning to the field of play.
24' CHANCE AFTER CHANCE
Some wonderful skill by Jelavic almost carves out another chance for Everton and the visitors are relieved to clear for a corner which, rarely for Everton, comes to nothing. Mirallas then shoots straight at Harper.
22' MIRALLAS NOT FAR AWAY
Kevin Mirallas cuts in off the left wing and hits a wicked 25-yarder that curls only a couple of feet wide of the left-hand upright. Harper would have got nowhere near that.
20' ANGRY WORDS FROM THE BENCH
Newcastle assistant manager John Carver is lambasting his players on the sidelines. Alan Pardew, remember, is confined to the stands.
16' MORE ON THAT GOAL
That goal is no more than Everton deserve. Baines advanced down the left, played it into Pienaar, collected the resulting wonderful backheel and lashed a low shot into the net past Harper.
15' GOAL: EVERTON 1 NEWCASTLE 0
Leighton Baines gives Everton the lead.
14' NEWCASTLE ON THE RACK
Everton are rampant here, pinning the visitors inside their own half and swinging the ball from one flank to the other, with both full-backs well advanced and in the thick of the action.
12' WELL WIDE FROM PIENAAR
Some delightful interplay between Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar manufactures a chance for the South African, but he cuts across the ball and sees his shot slice out for a throw-in on the right.
10' CRASH TEST DUMMY
A delicious dummy by Jelavic almost frees Mirallas, but Williamson reads the situation well and clears the danger. Jelavic is moving more freely after that earlier knock, by the way.
8' EVERTON BOOKING
Phil Neville is rightly cautioned for scything down Papiss Cisse. He can have no complaints, none whatsoever, and he smiles as the yellow card is brandished.
5' BACK INTO THE ACTION
Having received treatment, Jelavic makes his way on to the field, albeit still limping heavily.
3' GOAL DISALLOWED
Nikica Jelavic pokes home from close range, but the flag is up for offside. He clatters into the post on his follow-through.
2' TOUCHING TRIBUTE
There was a touching moment before kick-off. An Everton mascot dressed in blue wearing the number 9 and a Liverpool mascot dressed in red wearing the number 6 led out the two teams, remembering the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives at the Hillsborough disaster and emphasising the football unity on Merseyside. Each of the ball-boys also have the number 96 on the front of their jerseys and the names of the deceased were displayed on the big scoreboard in the corner of the ground. There was a minute's applause from all players and supporters, who include Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
1' HERE WE GO
Everton kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS

0' EVERTON TEAM NEWS
Everton show two changes to the side which lost at West Brom. Tony Hibbert comes in to play at right-back with Darron Gibson injured and Kevin Mirallas is handed his first Premier League start in place of Steven Naismith.
0' PREVIEW
Two of the Premier League's overachievers come face to face on Monday night when Everton welcome Newcastle United to Goodison Park. While Everton manager David Moyes has been used to working miracles on a shoestring budget season after season, the remarks made by Toon boss Alan Pardew before these two sides met on the final day of the 2011-12 campaign irked more than a few on the blue half of Merseyside. Pardew claimed that the achievements of his side in pushing for a European place had elevated them into the upper echelons of the Premier League and into “a different league” from the likes of the Toffees. Cue a 3-1 defeat at Goodison and expect David Moyes' side to be as up for this match as they were for the visit of Manchester United. Everton's England defender Phil Jagielka, for one, has not forgotten the comments. “I wouldn't say there was a bit of an edge to the game, but I think it's a little bit disrespectful for someone to say something like that after one good season,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Fair play, Newcastle had a fantastic season and massively overachieved, but they aren't the first team to overachieve for a season. In the Premier League it's all about consistency, and if you look at how we have performed over the years, then it's a little bit disrespectful to come out and say something like that.” Pardew, of course, will be watching this match from the stands as he serves the first of a two-game ban for pushing an assistant linesman during the match with Tottenham last month. Tonight's game kicks off at 2000BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
It will come as no surprise to learn that Everton's combative midfielder Marouane Fellaini has committed twice as many fouls this season as any of his team-mates. What may have been less predictable is that the Belgium midfielder also has attempted more shots than any other Everton player and is their leading scorer with two goals. Newcastle's leading scorer, Hatem Ben Arfa, also has two, his latest effort being a stunner last time out in the 1-1 home draw with Aston Villa. The Toon's twin strikeforce of Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba have made a slow start to the season with just one goal between them (for Ba against Tottenham on the opening day of the season) in the opening three games.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Newcastle have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 62 wins to 59 by Everton and 33 games being drawn. At Goodison, Everton have 42 wins to 20 by Newcastle, with a further 15 meetings ending up all square. Everton won the last meeting between the sides on the final day of last season 3-1 at Goodison. Steven Pienaar (16 mins), Nikica Jelavic (27) and Johnny Heitinga (65) gave them an unassailable lead, with Newcastle's consolation coming courtesy of a Tony Hibbert own goal. Newcastle's 1-0 win on September 18, 2010, was their only success in the last nine visits to Goodison in the league.
0' FORM GUIDE
Everton won their first three games in all competitions before suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion last time out. They start the night in ninth and can join second-placed Manchester United on nine points with a victory. Newcastle are currently 13th, but can leapfrog Everton with maximum points tonight. They beat Tottenham 2-1 on the opening day, lost 2-0 at Chelsea and then drew 1-1 at home to Aston Villa.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Darron Gibson is out for up to five weeks after limping off during Everton's last game against West Brom with a thigh strain. A similar injury forced Steven Pienaar out of South Africa's squad for friendlies against Brazil and Mozambique and he will have a late fitness test. New signing Bryan Oviedo's visa clearance did not come through in time for him to play a part. The international break dealt Newcastle two injury blows, with goalkeeper Tim Krul suffering an elbow injury training with the Holland team and skipper Fabricio Coloccini damaging his hamstring with Argentina. The pair are definitely out, as are Danny Simpson (hamstring) and Ryan Taylor (knee).
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Jones, who has been refereeing since he was 15 and who became a member of the select group of Premier League officials in 2008-09. The official from Chester brandished 82 yellow cards in his 25 top-flight appointments last season and also sent off six players, including Newcastle's Jonas Gutierrez at Old Trafford in November. He did, however, also award the Magpies a controversial penalty in that game which was converted by Demba Ba. This is only his second top-flight appointment of the season, his first being Chelsea's 2-0 win at Wigan. Jones's assistants today are Darren Cann and Ceri Richards, while Andre Marriner is the fourth official.
