Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
Who saw that coming? A fairly even first half saw Villa take advantage of Southampton's defensive deficiencies to ease in front. They looked in control but from the moment Rickie Lambert's shot was helped into the net by Brad Guzan, Southampton and Villa both looked like different sides. In short, Villa capitulated but the Saints should be given great credit for exploiting the gaps (and Villa's fragile confidence). Talisman Lambert was superbly supported by Lallana, Ramirez and Puncheon and Villa had nothing to offer in response. It's a rout in the end, but I doubt these two sides will be too far away from each other in the final reckoning next May. Full time at St Mary's, Southampton 4 Aston Villa 1.

A hopeful ball into the box reaches Benteke who nods a header into Gazzaniga's arms. The Premier League debutant between the sticks hasn't had a fat lot to do.
87' COMFORTABLE
That third goal was so important for the Saints. Having gone so long without tasting victory, a one-goal advantage would have resulted in a very nervy final few minutes, but the two-goal cushion means they're currently spraying it around without a care in the world. Still time for that to change if Villa get their act together.

Southampton's third may possibly be awarded as a Ciaran Clark own goal. Replays show the ball deflected off the Irishman, diverting it into the roof of the net.

Southampton's defending was bad in the first half, but Villa have just outdone them. Lambert ambles forward down the left and plays a simple pass into the box for JASON PUNCHEON, who simply shows Holman one way before cutting onto his right and lashing into the roof of the net from a tight angle on the left. Southampton are in the driving seat - a scenario which seemed so unlikely at half time.
70' ALL SAINTS
Not much of a reaction yet from Villa. It's all Southampton and they continue to push forward.

Lambert reacts by sending on Gabriel Agbonlahor and former Middlesbrough left back Joe Bennett in place of Barry Bannan and Eric Lichaj. It's Bennett's Villa debut.

What a turnaround! Five minutes after being behind, Southampton are in front and the roof has just been lifted off St Mary's. Ramirez shows his class with a delicate chip into the box where NATHANIEL CLYNE, rampaging up from left back, takes a touch and drills past Guzan from 12 yards.

The momentum is all with Southampton now, and St Mary's is rocking. Important period coming up.
60' LALLANA SHOT
They're full of beans now. Lallana smacks a 25-yard rasper on the half volley which whistles over Guzan's bar.
58' SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 ASTON VILLA
A potentially pivotal moment in Southampton's season. An early cross from the right bounces through to RICKIE LAMBERT who takes a touch past two Villa defenders and fires low into the net from 18 yards. It was almost directly at Guzan, who will be rightly disappointed that he merely helped the ball into the net. Now, can Southampton push on from here?
56' OVER-HIT
Ramirez looks for Lambert with a chip into the box but it's over-hit and Guzan watches it roll out for a goal kick. Ramirez has looked tidy enough on his full debut, but no fireworks yet.
54' NO PEN
Lichaj is involved again from the resulting free kick, with Lambert laughably claiming a penalty from the slightest of grazes on his back. Saints are desperate for anything they can get, but the referee isn't fooled.

Lichaj earns a booking for a late sliding challenge on Morgan Schneiderlin on the Southampton right.
52' CLYNE BURST
Clyne, now at left back, surges forward before being tackled just outside the Villa box by Clark. If he's looked up he could have found one of two team mates to his right. But Southampton's final ball has been atrocious today.
49' BENTEKE HEADER
This is an absolute bullet of a header from Christian Benteke. He rises highest - unchallenged, mind - to power Bannan's outswinging corner just past the post from eight yards. He must have lead in his forehead.
48' BENT CHANCE
Benteke links up beautifully with his strike partner, feeding Bent whose shot is tipped wide by Paulo Gazzaniga. End to end stuff at the start of the second period.
47' PUNCHEON SHOT
Good intent from Southampton at the start of the half, with Puncheon letting fly from range. Guzan makes a comfortable save.
46' HALF TIME CHANGES
Both managers have made a change apiece at the break. Frazer Richardson is on for Daniel Fox for Southampton, while Villa have replaced Stephen Ireland with Ashley Westwood.

We're back underway at St Mary's.
45' HALF TIME
Well Saints were 4-1 down this time last week, so at least they're improving. This has been far too comfortable for the visitors though - Guzan has had just one save to make and Saints look short of ideas already. Villa haven't been much better, but so far they haven't had to be.

You won't see a much harsher booking all season. Vlaar and Lambert chase a ball over the top - Lambert trips on Vlaar's boot and referee Moss not only awards a foul for the accidental clash, but has the temerity to book Villa's captain, who laughs in amazement. Terrible refereeing.
41' STRUGGLING
A Clyne pass goes straight out for a Villa goal kick. No boos from the home fans though - just a deathly silence. That's much worse. Southampton are really struggling.
38' CUT ADRIFT
Southampton were just building some momentum as well, but they'll get nowhere near survival if they continue to defend like that this season. They could soon find themselves cut adrift at the bottom of the table.
36' SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 ASTON VILLA
This is bread and butter for DARREN BENT. A scuffed Ireland shot bounces through the box and Bent reacts first, prodding past a motionless Gazzaniga from six yards. Woeful defending - no one even began to try and claim that loose ball, the keeper included. It's Bent's first of the season.
32' BANNAN SHOT
Ireland's cross is missed by Benteke and reaches Bannan, who is closing in behind the striker. He's surprised that it comes to him and sidefoots an awkward volley wide.
31' FIRST ON TARGET
It's Southampton doing all the pressing at the moment. A right-wing cross causes problems, with the ball pinging around the box before Ramirez sends an overhead kick into Guzan's arms. First shot on target from either side.
28' NICE MOVE
Much better from the Saints who play some intricate passing to cut through Villa's midfield, with Lallana and Rodriguez involved. Eventually Lallana crosses into the six-yard box but Vlaar clears unchallenged.
25' SCRAPPY
It's gone a bit scrappy at St Mary's. Not too much composure or quality on display at the moment. We could do with a goal.
22' GREAT CHALLENGE
Darren Bent ominously strides towards a ball played across the Southampton back four, but Jose Fonte nips in with a superbly-timed tackle to deny the England striker. He gets a hearty ovation for his efforts.
20' APPLAUSE FOR STAN
As is tradition these days, Villa's fans pay tribute to their absent captain Stan Petrov with a minute's applause from the 19-minute mark. Great touch.
20' RAMIREZ SHOT
Villa sit off Gaston Ramirez, who is roughly 25 yards out. He needs no invitation to let fly and duly drives a left-footed effort just past the post. Slack defending, that.
19' REDEEMED
Puncheon scuffs a clearance, drawing a loud groan from the home fans, but the winger redeems himself by earning a goal kick off Lowton.
15' DAVIS SHOT
Tidy build up from the hosts before Steven Davis blasts a poor effort over the bar from range. You could see that happening the moment he lined it up.
14' END TO END
Not much to choose between these sides so far. Southampton are full of energy but lack quality in the final third. Villa are more organised, but also more inhibited.
11' WASTE
Saints catch Villa on the break and are four-on-four. Lambert has the ball out wide on the left - he cuts in menacingly but then selfishly goes for goal, instead of picking out one of his three team mates in support. The shot sails over the bar.
9' CONGESTED
It's very congested in midfield with Villa playing quite narrow and Saints looking to make things happen via Ramirez and Lallana.
7' ONE-TWO
Promising signs for Southampton as Ramirez bursts into the area, playing a lovely one-two with Lambert, but the return pass is a little heavy and Guzan collects.
5' EARLY RUNNING
Villa, clad in their bright yellow away kit, are making the early running. The signs are that it'll be a decent, free-flowing game.
3' BIG AFTERNOON
Big afternoon for a few Premier League new boys. Paulo Gazzaniga, Maya Yoshida and Gaston Ramirez - the latter of whom really made a name for himself in Serie A last season - will look to make a name for themselves for Saints. Benteke - who is one heck of a unit - is already putting himself about for Villa.

Jonathan Moss, the referee with a higher red-card-per-game percentage than anyone in the top flight last season, takes charge today. Moss showed 11 players their marching orders in 2011-12, including Southampton's Dean Hammond during a dip down to the Championship for a 1-1 draw against Reading.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
If today's fixture is as exciting as the last occasion these two faced each other, we're in for a treat. Back in April 2005 Saints desperately needed a win to help their survival cause and were two-up inside 13 minutes thanks to Kevin Phillips and Peter Crouch. Cue a second half comeback from Villa, who won 3-2 with Carlton Cole, Nobby Solano and Steve Davis on target. The last time Southampton beat Villa at home was back in 2000 when two James Beattie goals earned a 2-0 win.
0' PREVIEW
Not as easy as it sounds, this Premier League business. Only six European clubs spent more than Southampton this summer, with Nigel Adkins splashing out £33million on furnishing last season's Championship-winning squad. So far the outlay hasn't been rewarded - Saints sit bottom, with a bit fat zero points from four matches. The pressure is already on Adkins and a visit from Aston Villa this afternoon could prove to be crucial, with a trip to high-flying Everton looming next Saturday. As for Villa, today is about continuing the Paul Lambert revolution after last week's win over Swansea. They're only on four points themselves, so won't be in a charitable mood.
