Arsenal vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FT: ARSENAL 1 CHELSEA 2
Chelsea remain unbeaten and as of this minute enjoy a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League thanks to an impressive win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The all-important goal came eight minutes into the second half when Juan Mata's hopeful free-kick from way out on the right found its way into the far corner of the goal via the merest of touches off the shin of Laurent Koscielny. While there was much luck about the winner, which has to go down as a fluke, there was nothing fortunate about the result. Chelsea dominated the first half and were well worth the lead given them by Fernando Torres, who finished neatly on 20 minutes from another Mata free-kick. Arsenal enjoyed their best spell just before the break and went in level thanks to an uncharacteristically clinical finish from Gervinho, who produced a thumping shot into the corner after turning coolly in the box. Arsenal had their moments in the second half, particularly through Lukas Podolski, who saw one header superbly saved by Cech and another deflected effort palmed away by the off-balance Chelsea goalkeeper. Olivier Giroud also fired into the side-netting in stoppage time when it seemed easier to score. While Arsenal were wasteful in front of goal, that's taking nothing away from Chelsea. Those that said the Blues were in a falsely elevated position because of the easy start to the season given them by the fixture computer may have to think again.
90' CHELSEA BOOKINGS
Ramires is booked for a foul on Cazorla. That was harsh.
90' EASIER TO SCORE
Arsenal look certain to level. Cazorla dinks a pass through for Giroud, who rounds Cech but shoots into the side-netting.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of four minutes of added time.
90' TOO HIGH FROM CAZORLA
Arsenal do create a chance. Gervinho squares the ball for Cazorla who, leaning back, skies a left-footed effort over the bar.
89' PLAYING OUT TIME
Chelsea are keeping the ball expertly here, it's hard to see Arsenal finding the salvation of an equaliser.
86' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Ryan Bertrand replaces Juan Mata.
85' FLAG SAVES CECH
Chelsea escape big time as Cech comes to punch a free-kick from Cazorla but flaps horribly and the ball crashes against the post. He is a mightily relieved man to see the flag up for offside.
82' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Gary Cahill replaces David Luiz at the heart of the Chelsea defence.
80' DANGEROUS FREE-KICK
Mata exchanges passes with Torres and is felled right on the edge of the box. Chelsea fancy their chances of a third here to kill off the game. Mata lines it up and curls a left-footer straight into the wall.
78' WENGER FRUSTRATED
Arsene Wenger is cutting a frustrated figure on the Arsenal bench. His side look short of ideas and the manager knows it.
75' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Victor Moses replaces Oscar in the Chelsea midfield.
74' GIROUD INCHES AWAY
Giroud tries a snap-shot which deflects off the foot of Luiz. Cech sticks out a hand and just manages to pat it wide of the post.
72' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who had been the last player before Gervinho to net a league goal against Chelsea. The answer: Danny Guthrie of Reading.
69' BLUES CALLING THE TUNE
Chelsea are certainly looking the likelier to get the next goal here, Arsenal look very vulnerable on the break.
67' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTIONS
Aaron Ramsey and Lukas Podolski are replaced by Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.
64' GOLDEN CHANCE WASTED
Suddenly Chelsea have a five-on-three break after a slip from Ramsey but when the ball reaches Torres all the momentum goes out of the move and the chance is gone.
61' WONDERFUL STOP FROM CECH
Arsenal go close to levelling. Chelsea give the ball away and a cross from the left is met by a looping header from Podolski. Cech, with the sun in his eyes, dives to his left to claw the ball away.
57' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
That Gervinho strike broke an impressive Chelsea run of 375 minutes without conceding a league goal. But who had been the last player to score against them and which club was he playing for? Answer in a few minutes.
54' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It was a bit of a fluke goal from another Mata free-kick. The Spaniard dipped a wicked ball into the far post, Mannone was leaden-footed and Koscielny, in trying to clear, saw the ball brush his leg and nestle in the corner. Had the Frenchman not got a touch it would likely have gone in anyway, so Mata will probably get the credit.
53' GOAL: ARSENAL 1 CHELSEA 2
Chelsea are back in front, as Mata's free-kick goes in off Koscielny's shin.
52' BAD MISS FROM CAZORLA
Gibbs and Podolski link up cleverly again. The German's cross is half-cleared by Cole and Cazorla lifts the loose ball over the crossbar.
51' ARSENAL BOOKING
Vermaelen is cautioned, somewhat harshly, for a foul on Torres. There certainly was contact, but the Spain frontman did go down all too easily.
50' CECH IN THE WARS
Petr Cech appears to have damaged a muscle mis-kicking a clearance. He'll continue, but looks to be in some discomfort.
49' CHELSEA BOOKING
David Luiz is cautioned for diving over a Gervinho tackle trying to win a penalty.
48' NOT FAR AWAY
Gibbs plays a really nice pass inside the full-back and central defender for Podolski, who would have been in on goal had he been able to control.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Arsenal get the second half under way.
45' HT: ARSENAL 1 CHELSEA 1
Gervinho's magnificent finish just before the interval means it's all square at the break. The Ivory Coast striker turned and shot into the top corner after a fine cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right. Up until that point Chelsea had turned in just about the perfect away performance, taking the lead thanks to that 20th-minute strike from Fernando Torres. Arsenal's zonal marking was all over the place at a Juan Mata free-kick and although Torres was one of the few players actually picked up he profited from the confusion to hook home an excellent right-foot shot. Before their goal Arsenal had been hugely disappointing, with the visitors supremely disciplined and proving very difficult to break down. But the introduction of Oxlade-Chamberlain for the injured Abou Diaby has changed the whole feel of the game.
45' ONLY JUST WIDE
Oscar's shot deflects off Vermaelen and goes just wide.
43' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It was a goal out of nothing. Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled the ball back from the right and Gervinho had the time to control it and lash a fierce shot into the top corner
42' GOAL: ARSENAL 1 CHELSEA 1
Gervinho levels for Arsenal.
41' CAZORLA SHOT BLOCKED
Oxlade-Chamberlain pulls the ball back for Cazorla, but Chelsea's defence close quickly and Ramires and Mikel charge down the shot. Ramsey needs treatment after a tackle from Torres.
39' CHELSEA BOOKING
Oscar is cautioned for fouling Mikel Arteta.
38' THREATENING AGAIN
Chelsea break swiftly. Hazard shows wonderful skill to stop on a sixpence and backheel a cross into the danger area, but Koscielny heads away.
35' ARSENAL BOOKING
Aaron Ramsey is cautioned for a nasty tackle on Oscar.
33' LONDON CALLING
Including today, Arsenal's next four home games are against Chelsea, QPR, Fulham and Tottenham, all four teams from the capital.
29' POOR FROM GERVINHO
The ball drops promisingly to Gervinho all alone at the far post, but it's neither a shot nor well-placed pass from the Ivory Coast striker and the chance is gone.
26' WELL DONE REFEREE
Having seen several replays it's still not clear Koscielny caught Torres, so we should give him the benefit of the doubt and say well done Mr Atkinson, who had done superbly to get up with play.
24' PENALTY CLAIMS WAVED AWAY
Both sides have shouts for a spot-kick. Mikel leaps over Cazorla who falls to the floor theatrically, while at the other end Torres robs Koscielny, and it appears the Arsenal defender might have caught the foot of the Spaniard just as he was about to shoot.
22' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Thomas Vermaelen was spoken to by the referee after felling Eden Hazard. Juan Mata took the resulting free-kick and Arsenal's marking was all over the place with Terry and Luiz both free. Torres, who was picked up by Koscielny; expertly hooked his right foot around the ball and deposited a shot in at the near post.
20' GOAL: ARSENAL 0 CHELSEA 1
Fernando Torres gives Chelsea the lead.
19' GERVINHO TAKES A TUMBLE
Gervinho runs into Cole on the edge of the Chelsea area. The crowd want a penalty, but Mr Atkinson is rightly not interested.
17' EARLY ARSENAL CHANGE
Abou Diaby has picked up a knock and will have to go off. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain comes on in his place.
15' UNDER CLOSE SCRUTINY
It's clear that Chelsea have identified Santi Cazorla as the Arsenal dangerman. He and John Obi Mikel have appeared joined at the hip in the opening quarter of an hour.
13' DECENT EFFORT FROM DIABY
Abou Diaby drops his shoulder to jink past Mikel and shoots straight into Cech's mid-riff from 25 yards. That's better from Arsenal.
11' WEATHER REPORT
The Emirates is bathed in sunshine today, it's a glorious afternoon for football. Gervinho pulls the ball back for Cazorla and he blazes over from outside the box.
9' COLE KEEN FOR MORE GOALS
Ashley Cole pops up in the Arsenal box in the early going, looking to get on the end of a cross just like he did against Stoke a week ago.
6' WAYWARD FROM RAMSEY
Arsenal manage a shot towards goal, but Ramsey cuts across the ball and it slices away past the right-hand upright and out for a goal-kick.
5' HUNDRED UP
Defender Branislav Ivanovic is making his 100th Premier League start for Chelsea today.
3' FIRST SHOT FOR CHELSEA
Chelsea win an early free-kick 35 yards from goal. Luiz gets an effort on target, but his strike is easy for Mannone to deal with. Torres then fires across the face of goal.
2' THE UNPOPULAR TWINS
Chelsea start confidently, spraying short passes from front to back. There are loud boos for John Terry and Ashley Cole whenever they touch the ball.
1' HERE WE GO
Chelsea kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' TEAM NEWS
Arsenal make one change to the team that drew at Manchester City, with Thomas Vermaelen replacing Per Mertesacker. Chelsea also make one change, with John Terry coming into central defence and Gary Cahill dropping to the bench.
0' PREVIEW
John Terry can expect a hot reception when he leads out the Chelsea side for the lunchtime Premier League derby clash with Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday. Despite being earlier cleared in a court of law, the former England captain was this week found guilty by an FA tribunal of directing abusive language with racial connotations towards Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand. While Terry considers an appeal he is free to play and Blues boss Roberto di Matteo had no hesitation in throwing his skipper into the fray. Terry is no stranger to controversy and has always saved his best performances for matches immediately after he has made newspaper headlines for the wrong reasons. This match, though, should not be about JT, and once the initial furore has calmed down we can look forward to a battle royal between two of the season's early pace-setters. Neither club has tasted defeat in the league this season, but certainly for Chelsea this is the first real test of whether they are legitimate contenders or merely pretenders. Arsenal, to many people's surprise, have already shown the stomach for a fight with a richly deserved point at champions Manchester City in their last league outing. The first meeting between the sides last season produced one of the games of the whole campaign, with Arsenal recording a stunning 5-3 victory at Stamford Bridge. Their hat-trick hero that day, Robin van Persie, has flown the coop but make no mistake, they still have enough weapons to ensure that Terry's afternoon could prove to be an uncomfortable one for more reasons than the vitriol being hurled from the stands. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Arsenal's leading scorers in the league this season are Gervinho and Lukas Podolski, who both have two goals to their name. The classy Santo Cazorla, though, is the man who pulls the strings in midfield and as well as his two assists the Spaniard has taken more shots at goal than any other Gunners player this season. Fernando Torres, Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard each have two goals for Chelsea. Eden Hazard started the season with four assists and a goal in his opening three matches, but has not been as influential since and needs to impose himself again with Oscar staking a claim to a regular starting place in the Chelsea midfield in recent weeks.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 61 wins to 44 by Chelsea and 45 games being drawn. At the Emirates and its predecessors, Arsenal have 36 wins to 19 by Chelsea, with a further 20 meetings ending up all square. As already mentioned, Arsenal won 5-3 at Stamford Bridge last October, but the return at the Emirates was a decidedly more dour affair, finishing in a goalless draw. Arsenal are unbeaten in the last three meetings between the sides, Chelsea having won the four prior to that. There was a time, of course, when the Blues could not manage a win in this fixture no matter how hard they tried, failing to record a victory in 19 outings between 1995 and 2005.
0' FORM GUIDE
Arsenal start the weekend in fifth place, having collected nine points from their opening five games, with two wins and three draws to their credit. Chelsea lead the way with 13 points from their five matches, one more than second-placed Manchester United. After disappointing draws with Sunderland and Stoke in their opening two matches, Arsenal have grown in confidence, recording wins over Liverpool and Southampton and gaining a more than creditable away draw at Manchester City. The only blemish on the Blues' record was the goalless draw at Queens Park Rangers. Both clubs had matches in midweek, but you could hardly call either of their outings taxing. Arsenal thrashed Coventry 6-1 at home in the Capital One Cup while Chelsea hammered Wolves 6-0 in the same competition.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Arsenal hope to have captain Thomas Vermaelen back at the heart of their defence with the Belgian centre-back having recovered from a virus. Vito Mannone has impressed in goal deputising for the injured Wojciech Szczesny (ankle) and he gets another chance today. Emmanuel Frimpong, who played in midweek, and Jack Wilshere are both not far from full fitness, though neither will be considered today. Also missing are midfielder Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) and defender Bacary Sagna (broken leg). For Chelsea, Frank Lampard has recovered from an ankle injury, but Daniel Sturridge is again ruled out with a hamstring problem.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Martin Atkinson, who has been a member of the Premier League's elite group of referees since 2005 and who became a FIFA referee a year later. The West Yorkshire-based official showed nine red cards last season, by far the most of any Premier League referee. Four of those dismissals came in his first seven Premier League games, though Atkinson has made a slow start this time around with no red cards to his name in four matches. His assistants today are Simon Beck and Stuart Burt, while Phil Dowd is the fourth official.
