Manchester United vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' 23 YEARS OF PAIN - OVER
The Spurs fans look delighted, and so they should, having seen their team win at Old Trafford for the first time since 1989. The away side started with a bang and took the lead through Jan Vertonghen after just two minutes. United looked shellshocked and Spurs continued to press, eventually getting a second through Gareth Bale. United looked tired, but came out of the break with Wayne Rooney in the team and a renewed spirit. Three minutes of madness struck around 50 minutes in, with Nani giving United hope before Dempsey replied immediately with a rebounded effort. However, United would not be still and Shinji Kagawa instantly reduced the deficit to one goal. United spent the rest of the half peppering the Spurs goal with shots, but they could not find a way through. A great result for the Londoners, but not what United needed at all. Final Score Manchester United 2, Tottenham Hotspur 3.
90' LATE INJURY
Immediately after the final whistle, the United physios enter the pitch to tend to Jonny Evans, who is in some pain down near the touchline. Another defensive injury is exactly what Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't need.
90' FULL TIME
The referee ends the game, and with that breaks one of the longest streaks in Premier League history!
90' UNITED CORNER
And here comes Anders Lindegaard!
90' TWO CHANGES
Manchester United replace a defender with a striker, with Javier Hernandez coming on for Ferdinand. AVB does the opposite, with Michael Dawson taking the place of Jermain Defoe.
90' WHAT A WASTE
With so many players in the box, Nani takes the wrong option of lashing over from 25 yards.
90' ADDED TIME
Four minutes are signalled by the fourth official. The home fans roar.
89' INJURY
Sandro is down for Spurs, clutching his leg. Unlike other players, who would go down at this stage of a game to waste time, Sandro seems genuinely hurt.
87' CLOSE!
Lennon loses Evra in the box and the full back heads at goal, only for Friedel to smother it. United are running out of time.
85' POST AGAIN!
Carrick flicks the ball across goal with his head following a corner, but Rooney's headed effort strikes the post and bounces wide. United seem desperate.
83' SPURS CHANGE
In a move to shore up his side, Andre Villas-Boas has replaced Moussa Dembele with Tom Huddlestone.
82' NOISE LEVELS
The volume has risen inside Old Trafford in the last few moments. It seems as if the fans have looked at their watches and know the players need encouraging through the last final minutes.
80' ENCOURAGING
Sir Alex Ferguson has spent most of this game pacing his technical area, urging his players forward. As time runs down, he needs to do something to spur them on if he wants any kind of positive result.
78' MAN UTD CHANGE
Danny Welbeck joins the action, with the impressive Shinji Kagawa leaving the field.
76' ALL MEN BACK
Spurs have all 11 men behind the ball and in their own half. It doesn't seem as if they're going for a winner as we enter the final 15 minutes.
74' EVENLY MATCHED
Both sides have had eight shots on target so far this game, with Spurs taking more of them than their hosts. You get the impression that the next shot on target could be crucial.
72' OPEN
After a spell of United dominance, Spurs are trying to claw their way back into this tie. At the very least, they want to hold the ball for more than two passes before giving it away.
70' SPURS SUB
Gylfi Sigurdsson comes on to take the place of goalscorer Clint Dempsey.
69' POOR
Van Persie cuts inside from the left, but his effort is neither a true shot nor a pass across to Rooney, and the ball rolls out.
68' SUPERB
Lennon cuts into the box and shapes to shoot, only for Evra to seemingly come out of nowhere to slide the ball away.
66' DOWN TO 10 MEN FOR THE MOMENT
Spurs have to cope with the barrage of United attacks without William Gallas, who is off the field replacing his contact lenses.
65' HANDBALL - OR NOT?
The ball strikes Sandro on the arm in the box, under pressure from Van Persie, but it appears to be an accident. Not that the United players see it like that.
63' OFFSIDE
Scholes plays a lovely ball to Van Persie in the box, but the flag goes up before he rounds Friedel and slots it home.
62' OFF THE POST!
There's more to come from this game. Rooney and Van Persie discuss at length who is to take a free kick from a central position 25 yards from goal, and in the end the former Everton man strikes it off the post with a beautifully struck shot. Unlucky.
60' DOMINANCE
United have been firmly camped in the Spurs half in these last few moments. Kagawa went down in the box a minute ago under a challenge from Kyle Walker, but the referee waves it away.
57' LIGHTNING FAST
140 seconds. That's all it took for the score to go from being United 1, Spurs 2, to a score of United 2, Spurs 3. No wonder all of Old Trafford is on it's feet.
55' BRILLIANT STUFF
We haven't had time to breathe here. United reply immediately through Rooney, whose lovely weighted pass to Kagawa leaves the Japanese with a lot to do, but he manages to turn and rifle a shot past the onrushing Friedel. What a game we have here. United 2, Spurs 3.
54' GOOOOAAAAALLL
KAGAWA GRABS ANOTHER GOAL FOR UNITED!!!!
53' BRILLIANT COUNTER
Have that, United. As soon as the hosts score, they let another in. Defoe paces past Ferdinand and plays it to Bale, whose low shot is spilled by Anders Lindegaard. Dempsey follows up with a neat finish to make it United 1, Spurs 3.
53' GOOOOAAAALLL
DEMPSEY GRABS A THIRD SPURS GOAL!
52' GOOD TEAM GOAL
Game on? Van Persie finds Rooney wide on the right, and the striker has time and space to bend his cross in. Nani makes a darting run to the near post and pokes home. United 1, Spurs 2.
51' GOOOOOAAAAALLL
NANI PULLS ONE BACK!!!
50' THE YOUNG PRETENDER
Sir Alex Ferguson is more than twice the age of Andre Villas-Boas, his opposite number. So far though, it seems that youthful exuberance is winning over experience.
48' BRIGHT START
United have come out looking bright. Maybe they've been on the end of a hairdryer or two in the dressing room.
46' UNITED CHANGE
Wayne Rooney has taken the place of Ryan Giggs. An attacking move by Sir Alex.
46' KICK OFF
Manchester United start the second half.
45' NOT IN THE SCRIPT
You wouldn't want to be a United player in that dressing room after a performance of that standard. Spurs have been quicker, stronger and hungrier all over the field and it shows. The visitors went ahead when Jan Vertonghen was able to make an almost unchallenged run from defence, exchanging passes along the way, before slotting low past Anders Lindegaard with only two minutes on the clock. United weren't able to fight back and Spurs hit them on the counter, with Bale easily outpacing Ferdinand rifle in another low effort. United need to change something here, and with Wayne Rooney on the bench you suspect that change will be sooner rather than later.
45' HALF TIME
The referee ends the half, with Spurs two goals to the good away at Old Trafford.
45' ADDED TIME
Three minutes are signalled by the fourth official.
44' SHOULD BE A PENALTY
Vertonghen drags Nani to the ground inside the box following a Scholes flick, but the referee waves for a corner. The United players aren't happy with that.
42' ROONEY AFOOT?
Wayne Rooney has just been sent for a long warm-up by Sir Alex. It looks as if we could be seeing the England striker sooner rather than later.
40' ALL SPURS
Spurs have looked far and away the better team here. With the interval approaching the United players need to do something drastic, as Sir Alex Ferguson has a reputation for how he deals with half-time team talks.
38' BACK IN TIME
11 years ago to the day, Spurs went in at the break three goals to the good away at Old Trafford. We all remember how that game ended, right?
36' KNOCK
Gallas walks gingerly off to receive treatment on a kick to the groin.
35' OUTCLASSED
Rio Ferdinand looked woeful there. Slow, and out of position. Despite media calls for an England recall, there are some doubters out there who don't think he should even be in the United team, and on that evidence they may have a point.
32' BEAUTIFUL GOAL
Spurs hit United on the counter, and it's beautiful to watch. Sandro plays it to Dembele, who releases Bale in the centre circle. Bale surges forward with the ball and Defoe cuts across him, drawing Jonny Evans away from the danger. Bale races past Ferdinand far too easily, and fires it low past Lindegaard. United 0, Spurs 2.
32' GOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLL
BALE DOUBLES SPURS LEAD!!!
31' KEEPING UP WITH IT
Jan Vertonghen has improved defensively in the last few moments and is alert to block an effort from Giggs.
30' SETTLED
The pace of the game has slowed in the last few moments, but with the quality of the players on the pitch you just know it will pick up again very soon.
28' OFFSIDE
Bale swings in a free kick from deep on the left, but Gallas is flagged offside before he can even get up to meet it.
26' WAKE UP
For all his endeavour going forward, Jan Vertonghen is up against a spirited Nani on the wing and has already been shown up by the Portuguese. He needs to stay more alert.
24' WASTED
Van Persie's free kick is knocked behind by Friedel and United waste the subsequent corner.
23' FREE KICK
Dembele trips Kagawa on the very edge of the Spurs box. This could be very dangerous for the visitors.
21' TOO EASY
Bale swings in a free kick from the right and the most dangerous man on the pitch so far today, Jan Vertonghen, gets a free header at it. Unfortunately for Spurs fans he gets it all wrong and sends it over. A warning shot for United, however.
19' ON THE ATTACK
Manchester United have had the lion's share of the ball in the last few moments, but the patched-up Spurs defence is doing well. Much is made of the problems in United's defence, but many people are forgetting the injuries to Naughton, Kaboul and Assou-Ekotto that are blighting Spurs.
17' UNLUCKY
Spurs hit United on the counter, and Defoe plays a lovely ball across the field for Jan Vertonghen. The defender's touch is poor and Ferdinand gets across to put it out for a corner.
16' ON HIS FEET
Van Persie is still on the pitch, but you have to wonder for how long. Play has continued with the ball being won and lost by both sides in midfield.
14' CONCERN
Robin van Persie is still down, and this looks nasty. The former Arsenal man has had a career blighted by injury, and Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping that this isn't a serious knock.
12' WIDE!
Gallas gets his clearance all wrong and it falls to Van Persie, who has time to shape and shoot. He gets it wrong and it bobbles wide, but the Dutchman seems to have picked up a knock from Gallas in the process.
10' GOOD VOICE
Despite the early setback, the home fans are cheering their team on. They know that United have won five of their games this season from a losing position, so they won't be too concerned.
8' WIDE
Dempsey drives a shot at the goal of Lindegaard, but he sends it wide.
6' GREAT START
Well, that was just what Spurs needed. United look shellshocked since that goal and don't seem sure how to go about their play, which is just what their visitors will want.
3' MARAUDING RUN
What a start for the visitors. Jan Vertonghen breaks forward from left back and exchanges passes with a number of his team-mates, before getting into the box and rolling a shot past Anders Lindegaard, via the leg of Jonny Evans. Manchester United 0, Spurs 1.
2' GGOOOOAAAALLLLL
JAN VERTONGHEN GIVES SPURS THE LEAD!
1' PACKED MIDIFELD
Both sides have gone with a 4-4-1-1 formation, allowing them to have an extra man in midfield or an additional striker depending on their needs.
1' KICK OFF
Spurs, in their white shirts, start the game kicking from right to left.
0' MATCH FACTS
What a tie this could turn out to be. Of course, it has the potential to be a damp squib, as many of the most-hyped matches turn out to be, but I have a feeling otherwise. Both teams are in good form, having picked up League Cup victories, and both were on good runs prior to that. One fact which may alarm the travelling fans is that they haven't won on this ground in the last 23 years, with the 26 league meetings in that time being won by United on 22 occassions. Worrying.
0' BREAKING TEAM NEWS
Both sides make several changes, with the hosts replacing their entire starting 11 for their Capital One Cup victory over Newcastle. Anders Lindegaard starts in goal, with Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand the only options in central defence. Wayne Rooney takes his place on the bench, with Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa starting up front. Darren Fletcher doesn't make the squad. For Spurs, only three players remain from their midweek endeavour. Steven Caulker, Clint Dempsey and Jan Vertonghen are the lucky men, with the latter starting at left back instead of Kyle Naughton, who is not fit for this game. Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon have been dangerous on the flanks in recent times.
0' TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS
Andre Villas-Boas took the opportunity to rest several players for Spurs' midweek game, so expect a more familiar line-up today. Brad Friedel should start in goal ahead of Hugo Lloris, in what some consider to be a controversial move, whilst Gareth Bale should play in his favoured left-wing position with Kyle Naughton as the defender behind him.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS
Wayne Rooney is back in the Manchester United squad, but may not start tonight following his midweek exertions against Newcastle in the League Cup. Antonio Valencia is still struggling with an ankle knock that he picked up against Liverpool last weekend, whilst Nemanja Vidic added to Sir Alex Ferguson's defensive woes this week after undergoing surgery on his knee. However, the home side will be boosted by the return to fitness of Darren Fletcher, as well as a good midweek performance from forgotten man Anderson.
0' PREVIEW
Hello and welcome to this evening's tie between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. After a scintilating afternoon of football, neutrals everywhere will be hoping that two of the Premier League's bigger sides can keep it going.
