Sunderland vs. Wigan Athletic
Minute Commentary
90' SUNDERLAND 1 WIGAN ATHLETIC
The Black Cats avoid five consecutive draws at the start of the season to instead defeat ten-man Wigan Athletic. The visitors were the most inspired team in the first half, coming out of the blocks quickly to create a couple of great chances in the opening quarter of an hour for James McCarthy and Arouna Kone. However, the second half got off to the worst possible start for Roberto Martiniez's men with a sending off and a goal against them in just over five minutes. Jordi Gomez was the man dismissed for a committed challenge on Danny Rose that a more lenient referee might have let go with just a booking, then Steven Fletcher rounded off magnificent work from James McClean to score the only goal of the game minutes later. This truly knocked the stuffing out of Wigan who offered meagre resistance in the remainder of the game, as Sunderland cruised to victory with ease.
90' FULL TIME
Sunderland have their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.
90' SUNDERLAND BREAK
Sebastian Larsson delivers a super ball in for Stephane Sessegnon, who in turn tries to drop one in the path of James McClean. Good idea, and Sunderland have a corner out of it.
90' INTO INJURY TIME
Gary Caldwell is lucky to avoid a card for catching Steven Fletcher with his elbow. A surprising five minutes of added time will be played.
89' SUNDERLAND CORNER NO.7
Substitute David Vaughan wins a corner for his side via a deflected effort. Sebastian Larsson's set-piece is headed clear by Maynor Figueroa.
87' OFFSIDE
Steven Fletcher is flagged for offside as Sunderland break quickly. The Black Cats look comfortable despite their lead being a narrow one.
84' DOUBLE WIGAN CHANGE
Roberto Martinez uses up his last two substitutions by introducing Ryo Miyaichi and Callum McManaman. James McArthur and Emmerson Boyce are withdrawn.
82' GOOD DECISION
Franco Di Santo makes a complete meal of an accidental hand in the face from Danny Rose and is quite rightly cautioned. Stephane Sessegnon showed sublime pace and skill to beat a defender and almost set up a shooting opportunity moments earlier.
81' ROOF OF THE NET
Sebastian Larsson exchanges passes with Stephane Sessegnon before landing a wayward cross on the roof of Ali Al Habsi's net. Steven Fletcher and James McClean were available in the box.
78' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Adam Johnson is the man that David Vaughan replaces. The winger hasn't been at his full best today but has grown into the game as its gone on.
76' EASY TAKE
Ali Al Habsi has no problem catching a cross aimed in by Adam Johnson. Looks like David Vaughan is about to come on.
73' WELL WIDE
Jean Beausejour plays the free kick short to Franco Di Santo, who hammers well wide.
72' IN THE BOOK
James McClean knocks over James McCarthy on the edge of the area and picks up a yellow card, although McCarthy undoubtedly made a meal of it.
69' SUNDERLAND ATTACK
Titus Bramble headed wide from that corner, then Ramis has to be alert to defend a dangerous Sebastian Larsson ball in towards the six-yard box.
67' SIXTH SUNDERLAND CORNER.
Ali Al Habsi plays it safe dealing with an Adam Johnson cross and concedes a corner. Roberto Martinez has opted for a more orthodox defensive formation now, bringing Emmerson Boyce back to a traditional right-back role with Maynor Figueroa on the other side and Gary Caldwell and Ramis in the middle.
64' CAUTION
Steven Fletcher is shown a yellow card for going in with a high foot on an opponent.
63' BE BOLD
Not sure why Sunderland aren't going for the jugular considering their one-man advantage, even if they do have a slender lead. The Black Cats have failed to keep a lead on any occasion in the league this season, conceding against Swansea, Liverpool and West Ham after initially going a goal up.
60' FIRST SUBSTITUTION
The first change of the afternoon sees Franco Di Santo replace Shaun Maloney. The latter was impressive in the first half but has subsequently faded.
57' YELLOW CARD
James McCarthy is yellow-carded for clumsily upending Adam Johnson near the halfway line.
55' SO CLOSE
James McClean is almost the provider for Stephane Sessegnon this time, but Sessegnon can't get the slightest of touches on the ball that would surely have put Sunderland 2-0 up.
54' BUOYED BY THE GOAL
Stephane Sessegnon and Craig Gardner pepper shots wide of goal, Gardner coming closest with a 20-yarder that whistles just over.
51' GOOOOOOOOAL!
STEVEN FLETCHER has his fifth goal in five games. Much credit has to go to James McClean, who worked his way in from the left and into the box before providing service for Fletcher for with a cross-cum-shot, and the in-form striker made no mistake with his finish.
48' TALKING POINT
Just seeing replays of Jordi Gomez's challenge, and it's fair to say it's debatable whether it deserved a red. Hopefully Roberto Martinez will have learned to keep his mouth shut following a recent FA charge.
47' RED CARD
Jordi Gomez goes in with his studs showing on Danny Rose and is given his marching orders by Howard Webb. There wasn't malicious intent in the challenge, but you can't get away with that in the modern game.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Both sides are unchanged as Sunderland get the second half started.
45' SUNDERLAND 0 WIGAN ATHLETIC 0
No goals so far, and it's Wigan Athletic who have been the better side. Roberto Martinez's men had two great chances in the opening quarter of an hour through James McCarthy and Arouna Kone, who were both denied by super saves from Simon Mignolet. Sunderland have offered little at the other end with the exception of a couple of opportunities from Sebastian Larsson set-pieces, although Black Cats fans will be pleased to hear that the reportedly unhappy Stephane Sessegnon has looked their liveliest player.
45' HALF TIME
Howard Webb blows his whistle to put an end to some Sunderland pressure late in the half. It's goalless at the break.
45' CORNER DEFENDED
Stephane Sessegnon, Adam Johnson and Sebastian Larsson intertwine to win a corner. Gary Caldwell and Ali Al Habsi combine to defend it for the visitors.
43' WIDE FROM MCCARTHY
James McCarthy's low drive has Simon Mignolet worried, but the Wigan Athletic man doesn't quite find the target.
41' POSSESSION ENDS
A neat spell of Sunderland possession ends when Jack Colback ignores options left and right to knock an aimless ball down the middle. The game has gone flat in the last several minutes.
38' HEADS WIDE
Arouna Kone meets an Emmerson Boyce cross from the right but heads a fair way wide.
35' FIRST BOOKING
James McArthur deservedly picks up the game's first booking for a late challenge on Adam Johnson.
34' SESSEGNON BACK ON FORM?
Stephane Sessegnon looks to have regained a bit of form after a recent slump, and has certainly been Sunderland's brightest spark in this game so far. No clear chances have fallen for him yet, but his skill and creativity have been evident.
31' NOT A POPULAR MAN
Howard Webb garners plenty of respect in football, but he's not a popular figure at the Stadium of Light! Another questionable decision against the home side serves as a reminder to the home faithful that they haven't won any of their last eight games in which Webb was referee.
28' SET-PIECE SPECIALIST
A low Sebastian Larsson free kick from what didn't seem a shooting position forces Ali Al Habsi to push the ball behind for a corner, from which Larsson then finds the head of Steven Fletcher who heads narrowly wide. Titus Bramble could possibly have had a penalty moments earlier, as Gary Caldwell had his arms all over him at an earlier Black Cats free kick.
26' ANTI-CLIMAX
Almost a minute of tense build-up precedes a Sunderland free kick in a decent position 30 yards out, before Sebastian Larsson simply crashes it into the wall.
23' COUNTER-ATTACK
Sunderland break at speed, and Craig Gardner fires over despite having Adam Johnson in space to his right. Johnson has hardly been in the game so far.
21' DEFLECTED
Gary Caldwell sticks a leg out to nullify a tame Danny Rose effort.
19' OVERAMBITIOUS
Maynor Figueroa misses the target by a long way from distance.
17' STORY SO FAR
Wigan Athletic are playing with the most confidence and have had the two best chances through James McCarthy and Arouna Kone.
14' AMAZING SAVE
Simon Mignolet pulls off a tremendous save from point-blank range to deny Arouna Kone what looked like a certain goal. Outstanding stop, although I'm not sure how much he knew about it.
13' SUNDERLAND FLURRY
A ball from Stephane Sessegnon aimed at Steven Fletcher in an advanced position doesn't quite come off. Sebastian Larsson skews a shot wide from range a minute later.
10' MORE THAN A POACHER?
Renowned goal-poacher Steven Fletcher shows his creative abilities once again by spraying wide right to Adam Johnson to set him off on an attacking run. Johnson brushes past Maynor Figueroa before being penalised for a soft foul on Jean Beausejour.
7' BLOCKED
Steven Fletcher feeds Stephane Sessegnon on the edge of the box who has a shot blocked. Roberto Martinez has set out his defence in an interesting manner, fielding three centre-backs - Gary Caldwell, Ramis and Maynor Figueroa - with Emmerson Boyce and Jean Beausejour pushing up the flanks.
4' WIGAN RESPOND
James McCarthy is allowed to roam into the area from where he draws a low save from Simon Mignolet. Jordi Gomez scoops over from the subsequent corner.
2' EARLY SCARE
Ali Al Habsi gets himself in a muddle attempting to dribble out of his own penalty area, almost getting caught out by Steven Fletcher. James McClean then sends a cross out into touch.
1' KICK OFF
Wigan Athletic kick things off at the Stadium of Light.
0' WIGAN TEAM
Roberto Martinez reverts back to the side that lost to Fulham last weekend, with the exception of James McArthur coming in for Ben Watson. Full line-up: Al Habsi, Boyce, Caldwell, Figueroa, Ramis, Beausejour, McCarthy, McArthur, Maloney, Gomez, Kone. Subs: Pollitt, Watson, Jones, Di Santo, Boselli, McManaman, Miyaichi
0' SUNDERLAND TEAM
Sebastian Larsson returns as expected after being rested midweek but Carlos Cuellar misses out. Adam Johnson has overcome a thigh strain to start. Full line-up: Mignolet, Gardner, Rose, O'Shea, Bramble, Colback, Larsson, Johnson, McClean, Sessegnon, Fletcher. Subs: Westwood, Campbell, Wickham, Kilgallon, Vaughan, Meyler, Saha
0' STAY TUNED
We'll have the today's teams shortly after 14:15 BST, followed by a live text commentary at 15:00.
0' THE REF
England's premier referee Howard Webb takes charge of this game. Webb has only taken charge of three games this season (all in the Premier League), his last being Tottenham's 3-1 win at Reading back on September 16th. The Yorshire-based official's card tally for the campaign so far stands at eight bookings and no red cards.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Adam Johnson is doubtful with a thigh strain and Lee Cattermole begins a three-game ban, but Carlos Cuellar and Sebastian Larsson are likely to feature following their absence from Sunderland's League Cup action midweek. Wigan's Antolin Alcaraz and Franco di Santo have not yet recovered from respective groin and calf injuries.
0' RECENT RESULTS
The last of those four Sunderland draws came at West Ham last Saturday, where it was arguably their defensive-mindedness that allowed the Hammers to come at them in the second half and mount pressure that culminated in a late Kevin Nolan equaliser. At least for Martin O'Neill's they were able to remember the taste of winning at MK Dons midweek with a 2-0 win the Capital One Cup. Wigan had a more enjoyable experience at Upton Park four days after Sunderland with a 4-1 victory their in the League Cup, a welcome distraction from their recent league woes. Fulham came to the DW and won 2-1 last weekend; another limp display following on from a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford in the Latics previous game.
0' PREVIEW
There's two ways of looking at a game like this between Sunderland and Wigan Athletic – you might not find the matchup of two sides who haven't exactly set the Premier League on fire so far particularly appealing, or you might be enticed by the prospect of a contest between a couple of teams who really will be determined to notch up a much-needed win. For Sunderland it's been 12 games since they've had one those in the league including the backend of last season, yet the Black Cats bizarrely remain unbeaten this season thanks to four consecutive draws. Lucky for them that they did land Steven Fletcher relatively late in the transfer window, because their only four league goals scored this season have come through him. Wigan meanwhile have not continued their better form from the end of the last campaign, and in stark contrast to their opponents today have been leaky enough at the back to already be in double figures for goals conceded this season.
