90' SUBLIME SUAREZ LEADS LIVERPOOL TO FIRST LEAGUE WIN
Luis Suarez bagged a hat-trick as Liverpool recorded their first league win of the season this afternoon, with a 5-2 victory over Norwich at Carrow Road. The Uruguayan was in scintilating form as he mirrored his performance in Norfolk last season by taking home the match ball. His first came after just 65 seconds, when he fired a low shot past a sprawling John Ruddy to put his side ahead. It was 2-0 to Liverpool by half-time, as Suarez, moments after missing a simple one-on-one chance, outrageously bent in an effort with the outside of his foot to double his tally. Chris Hughton's gameplan had been undone, and clearly a few choice words were uttered in the Norwich dressing room at the break, as the home side flew out of the blocks for the second period. Bradley Johnson should have pulled one back, but instead somehow managed to divert the ball over the crossbar from inside the six-yard box, in what will go down as one of the worst misses this season. Johnson was made to pay when Liverpool surged up the other end almost immediately, and Suarez turned provider to allow Nuri Sahin to slot home for his third goal in two games for Liverpool and his first in the Premier League. Ten minutes later, Suarez did complete his hat-trick, with a beautifully curled effort from outside of the box, making it an astonishing six goals in two games at Carrow Road for him. Norwich pulled one back when Steve Morison capitalised on a parry from Pepe Reina, but Liverpool's youthful side looked assured throughout the game, with the Canaries defence often causing themselves a number of problems through misplaced passes and missed tackles. They could do nothing about Liverpool's fifth though, as Steven Gerrard started and finished a lovely move involving Raheem Stirling to add salt to the already gaping Norwich wound. Home fans were given something else to shout about in the closing stages, when a mistake by Martin Skrtel allowed Grant Holt to bear down on goal and finish well past Reina, who will be disappointed not to have kept his first clean sheet of the season. Brendan Rodgers will be pleased to have got his first three league points as Liverpool boss, but he shouldn't get ahead of himself. Suarez and co. won't be able to play with such freedom against the better sides, and defensive errors will be much more costly with more clinical strikers on the prowl. Nevertheless, fans will return to Merseyside with a smile for the first time this season. They will hope it's now uphill from here.
90' FULL-TIME
That's it. Liverpool record their first league win of the season, with a 5-2 victory over Norwich at Carrow Road.
90' CLOSING MOMENTS
Into the final seconds and Norwich are pressing, but aren't causing too much trouble to the Liverpool defence. A good day's work for Brendan Rodgers and his team overall.
89' OUTCLASSED TODAY
Norwich have some serious problems to think about in the coming weeks. Their defence has looked ropey at best, and they've failed to retain enough possession. Chris Hughton would have taken scoring two goals against Liverpool before the game; it's the conceding five that he would have declined.
87' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Jonny Howson plays a through ball with the outside of his right foot. Martin Skrtel comes across and should clean up easily, but he completely misses the interception which allows Grant Holt to surge down on goal, and the Norwich skipper finishes brilliantly into the far corner. Very good finish, but too late to make a difference.
87' GOAL!
Grant Holt scores for Norwich!
83' PETERING OUT
Liverpool look quite happy to just see this one out now. Possession has been the absolute key for them today, and Luis Suarez, who has been breathtaking at times.
79' NORWICH SUB
Alexander Tettey is on to replace Norwich goalscorer Steve Morison.
77' LOVELY FEET
Raheem Sterling skips past a number of Norwich challenges inside the box, before unleashing a left footed shot across goal, but his attempt is blocked and cleared. The youngster has impressed again this afternoon.
74' LIVERPOOL SUB
Jamie Carragher replaces Glen Johnson. Agger moves to left back, with Carragher slotting into centre back alongside Skrtel.
73' POKES WIDE
Luis Suarez almost adds a sixth, but his poked attempt under pressure from Leon Barnett goes into the side netting.
68' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
A move started, and finished, by Steven Gerrard. He plays in Raheem Sterling down the right, who breaks in scintilating fashion before cutting the ball back to his captain, and from inside the box with a clear sight on goal, Gerrard despatches with the help of a slight deflection. He rarely misses those.
68' GOAL!
Steven Gerrard scores for Liverpool!
66' LIVERPOOL SUB
Nuri Sahin is replaced by Jordan Henderson, with 25 minutes left to go in this one.
62' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Steve Morison grabs what must be, surely, a mere consolation goal for Norwich, which means that's still no clean sheet in the league for Liverpool. Russel Martin's shot is parried by Reina, but only as far as Morison, who fires in first time from close range.
61' GOAL!
Steve Morison scores for Norwich!
59' LIVERPOOL SUB
Oussama Assaidi is on to replace Suso.
57' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Did anyone really doubt that Suarez would bag three this afternoon? The ball is played into him on the edge of the box, he composes himself and curls the ball in beautifully past John Ruddy's despairing dive, and celebrates by standing, arms aloft, in a pose reminiscent of a certain Eric Cantona. Suarez has been devastatingly good today.
57' GOAL!
Luis Suarez scores for Liverpool! That's his hat-trick!
55' NORWICH SUB
Wes Hoolahan is on to replace Andrew Surman, burdened with the unenviable task of attempting to salvage something for his side this afternoon.
53' UP THE OTHER END
A Norwich corner is cleared, but only as far as Russell Martin, whose shot through a whole host of bodies flies just wide of Pepe Reina's far post.
50' GAMEPLAN UNDONE
There were obviously a few choice words thrown about in Norwich dressing room at half-time, as the Canaries flew out the blocks for the second period. However, their all-out-attack mindset proved costly as, with their defence exposed, Liverpool added a third. Chris Hughton's side just need to make sure they're not embarrassed now.
47' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Game over. Just as Johnson squanders a great chance for Norwich, Suarez turns provider to feed Nuri Sahin, who slots the ball home from close range for his third goal in two games, and his first in the Premier League.
47' GOAL!
Nuri Sahin scores for Liverpool!
46' HORRENDOUS MISS
Norwich storm out of the blocks, and should be back into this one, but for a horrendous miss from Bradley Johnson. Grant Holt nods down a cross from the right towards the onrushing Johnson, who from literally a yard out, manages to somehow divert the ball over the bar with his knee. Honestly one of the worst misses I've ever seen.
46' NORWICH SUB
Grant Holt is on to replace Simeon Jackson at half-time.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Norwich get things going in the second half, with 45 minutes to get something out of this game.
45' HALF-TIME
Mike Jones blows for half-time, and for arguably the first time this season, Liverpool have completely dominated a half of football. All thanks to one man, Luis Suarez, whose brace puts his side 2-0 up at the break. He really does love Carrow Road - that's five goals in one and a half games here now. I wonder what the odds were before the game for him to get yet another hat-trick?
44' CHANGE OF TACTICS NEEDED
Chris Hughton has a lot to think about as we approach half-time. His Norwich side haven't looked all that threatening, yet have to regain two goals somehow. A tough task.
41' YELLOW CARD
Leon Barnett is the first player in Mike Jones' book, after he brings down Suarez in the Norwich half.
38' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Seconds after missing a simple one-on-one chance, Luis Suarez doubles his and Liverpool's tally. He capitalises on a mistake by the Norwich defence, nips inside and audaciously bends the ball with the outside of his right foot into John Ruddy's far corner. An outrageous attempt, but that's what we've come to expect from the Uruguay international. Liverpool 2-0 to the good now.
38' GOAL!
Luis Suarez scores for Liverpool!
34' SUPERB BALL
Suarez's ball to Gerrard for that last move really was something special. Would have been one of the best assists you will see, if it wasn't for John Ruddy's excellent stop.
33' EXCELLENT SAVES
John Ruddy brilliantly denies what would have been a superb Liverpool goal, and Pepe Reina then does the same up the other end. First, Luis Suarez plays an excellent over-the-top reverse ball towards the onrushing Gerrard, whose header is stopped at point blank range by Ruddy. And then, within seconds, Simeon Jackson is denied an equaliser by a last gasp save from Reina. The definition of end-to-end, this one.
30' PASS AND MOVE
Liverpool string a number of passes together in the Norwich half, and their encouraging move ends with Raheem Sterling crossing for Steven Gerrard, who nods the ball back across goal, but none of his teammates are available.
27' WILD EFFORT
Great chance for Norwich, but Simeon Jackson has squandered it. A lovely cross from the left and an even better cushioned header present the Canadian with a superb opportunity from around the penalty spot, but his volleyed effort is wild and flies miles over the bar.
23' PENALTY SHOUT
Brendan Rodgers has been very vocal in voicing his thoughts about some of the decisions that maybe haven't gone his side's way this season. And here's another one for him to complain about. The ever-dangerous Luis Suarez finds himself through on goal, and appears to be barged over in the box by Leon Barnett. Referee Mike Jones waves play on, though, but replays show that it might have been a wrong call.
22' LATE FLAG
A good spell of possession from Norwich ends in disappointment. Bradley Johnson plays a ball over the top of the Liverpool back four towards Steve Morison, who finds himself in a great position but is called offside. And rightly so.
18' ALMOST A CHANCE
Luis Suarez finds himself in acres of space down the right hand side, and floats in a cross towards the back post where Raheem Sterling is lurking. The youngster attempts to head back across goal to Nuri Sahin, but his header is vitally cut out by a Norwich defender. Very open game this.
16' FULL BACK THREAT
Glen Johnson appears to be playing more as a winger so far. He's made a number of driving runs down the left flank, and is troubling Russell Martin, the Norwich right back. Perhaps Robert Snodgrass, who's playing just in front of Martin, needs to try and contain the England star a bit more than he is doing.
13' SETTLED INTO THE GAME
After somewhat of a frantic start to this one, and a sleepy one from Norwich's perspective, both sides have calmed down and are beginning to string a few passes together. Chris Hughton's gameplan will be well and truly out the window now, so the Canaries will have to muster up something different to get back into this one.
9' HOME SIDE GO CLOSE
First attempt from Norwich, and it's a close one. Leon Barnett's cross from the right evades everyone, and finds Simeon Jackson unmarked at the back post. The Canadian pokes goalwards first time, but a mixture of the post and Pepe Reina denies him an equaliser.
7' QUICK RECOVERY
A long ball over the top from Steven Gerrard looks to find Suarez again, and Leon Barnett lets the ball bounce, but manages to get a strong foot across to deny the Uruguayan another opening.
4' CONTINUED EARLY PRESSURE
Liverpool go close again, as Daniel Agger heads wide from a Nuri Sahin cross. Norwich look shellshocked in these early stages. They've barely touched the ball.
2' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Wow, what a start for Liverpool. They score with literally the first attack of the game. Raheem Sterling takes the ball down the left, and Suarez, picking up the ball on the edge of the box, fires in a low shot past a sprawling John Ruddy.
2' GOAL!
Luis Suarez scores for Liverpool!
1' HERE WE GO
Liverpool kick off, playing left to right.
0' MINUTE'S APPLAUSE
The teams are out, and are currently observing a minute's applause for John Bond, the former Norwich manager, who died earlier this week.
0' LIVERPOOL TEAM
Nuri Sahin's midweek brace against West Brom earns him a start for Liverpool this afternoon. Brendan Rodgers also hands a start to 19-year-old England Under-21 international Andre Wisdom at full back - his first Premier League start and only his third senior appearance - and Spanish youngster Suso in attack. FULL LINE-UP: Reina, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Wisdom, Sahin, Gerrard, Allen, Sterling, Suarez, Suso. Subs: Jones, Coates, Carragher, Henderson, Downing, Assaidi, Borini.
0' NORWICH TEAM
Two changes for Chris Hughton - one tactical and one enforced. Sebastien Bassong's hamstring strain means he misses out, with Michael Turner in to replace him, whilst Simeon Jackson is in for Wes Hoolahan, who drops to the bench. FULL LINE-UP: Ruddy, R. Martin, Turner, Garrido, Barnett, Johnson, Howson, Surman, Snodgrass, Jackson, Morison. Subs: Bunn, Tierney, R. Bennett, Hoolahan, E. Bennett, Tettey, Holt.
0' KICK-OFF - 3PM BST
Come back here before kick-off for all the up-to-date team news and build-up for Norwich v Liverpool from Carrow Road.
0' LIVERPOOL EARLY TEAM NEWS
The contentious red card that Jonjo Shelvey picked up last weekend against Manchester United means he misses out for Liverpool this afternoon. But the good news for Brendan Rodgers is that Daniel Agger could be fit, despite going off with a bruised knee against United. Fabio Borini is rated as touch-and-go after suffering an ankle injury.
0' NORWICH EARLY TEAM NEWS
After being forced off with a hamstring strain after just eight minutes against Newcastle last weekend, Sebastian Bassong could play this afternoon according to Chris Hughton. Similarly, Anthony Pilkington might be in line for a return after recovering from a back injury that has kept him out for his club's last three games. Meanwhile, young Spurs loanee Harry Kane is out after picking up a suspected broken foot in Norwich's 1-0 Capital One Cup win over Doncaster in midweek.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD
Luis Suarez was, quite simply, in unstoppable form the last time these two sides met. The Uruguayan recorded his first Premier League hat-trick in superb style, with his third goal coming from almost the halfway line. But Norwich's recent record against Liverpool is pretty poor full stop. They haven't beaten the Reds in six attempts, with their last victory coming courtesy of a solitary Jeremy Goss goal in April 1994 – six months after he had scored in the Canaries' now infamous victory over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup.
0' LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF A LEGEND
Four league titles, two FA Cups, four Charity Shields and a UEFA Cup: the honours won at Liverpool by their greatest ever manager, Bill Shankly, who died on this day in 1981. Fast forward 31 years, and it's Brendan Rodgers at the helm, and five games into this Premier League season, his Reds side are languishing in 18th place without a win to their name. Shankly won't be turning in his grave just yet, but it won't be long before the Liverpool faithful grow tired of being the top flight's laughing stock. A win today at Norwich would go some way to making up for the dreadful start they've endured this campaign, but three points this afternoon needs to be backed up with a series of stellar performances in October in order for the club's season to get back on track. As Shankly famously said, football is much more than life or death, but whether Rodgers and his new-look Liverpool have it in them to live up to the Anfield outfit's glittering past is yet to be seen.
0' RESULTS AREN'T EVERYTHING JUST YET
Norwich and Chris Hughton will feel both aggrieved and satisfied with their start to this year's Premier League campaign. Their current standing – 17th, with only three points from five games – doesn't tell the full story. Barring their opening day drubbing at the hands a rampant Fulham, the Canaries have secured decent points at home to QPR and West Ham, and an excellent point away to Spurs. Last weekend's narrow 1-0 loss to Newcastle – Hughton's old club – was also a close run thing. A cynic would say that to stay in this league, home games against QPR and West Ham need to be won. But being fair to Norwich – with a new manager and a stack of new faces – the positive spin in that case is that they left with a share of the spoils on each occasion. Just two goals in their opening five games will worry Hughton slightly, and they've got Chelsea and Arsenal in their next two games, so will pick out this afternoon's clash with Liverpool as winnable. And what does that say about their opponents?
0' THE MATCH
It's not quite a relegation six-pointer yet, but 17th-placed Norwich City host 18th-placed Liverpool at Carrow Road this afternoon, with both sides looking for their first three points of the campaign. Kick-off is 3pm BST.
