Manchester City vs. Sunderland
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN CITY 3 SUNDERLAND 0
Manchester City produce a thoroughly professional display at the Etihad Stadium to brush aside Sunderland, something they failed to achieve either home or away last season. It was a workmanlike if not quite scintillating display from Roberto Mancini's men who never looked in any danger once Aleksandar Kolarov had given them a fifth-minute lead with a curling shot direct from a free-kick. Despite their dominance the champions needed a second goal to rest easy and it finally arrived on the hour, substitute Sergio Aguero producing an expert first-time finish to convert a cross from the left by Kolarov. The third came in the final minute, James Milner's effort deflecting in off the top of the luckless Craig Gardner's head. City could have had a hatful on another day. Simon Mignolet made fine saves to deny Pablo Zabaleta and Micah Richards, while the England defender also saw a header cleared off the line by Danny Rose and David Silva hit the crossbar with a deft chip after being set up by Tevez. What will please Roberto Mancini most, though, apart from the victory, was that his side kept their first clean sheet of the season. What about Sunderland? Nine out of ten for work-rate, three out of ten for attacking intent. Steven Fletcher looked lively the few touches he had in meaningful areas, but goalkeeper Mignolet was their outstanding player and by far the busiest.
90' MIGNOLET SAVES AGAIN
Aguero is denied a second by another magnificent save from Mignolet after the City striker had got clean through.
90' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
David Silva is replaced by Jack Rodwell.
90' GOAL: MAN CITY 3 SUNDERLAND 0
James Milner nets from the resulting free-kick, the ball skimming off the top of Craig Gardner's head.
89' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
Craig Gardner is booked for felling Kolarov on the left edge of the Sunderland penalty area.
86' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
Gael Clichy comes on for City, Carlos Tevez making way.
85' LESCOTT IN THE WAY
Gardner's fierce strike is on target, but Lescott stoops to get in the way and head it behind for a corner.
83' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Fraizer Campbell replaces Stephane Sessegnon.
82' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
Jack Colback is cautioned for a mistimed tackle.
80' FLETCHER WORKING HARD
Fletcher has worked his socks off today. He cuts inside but shoots tamely at Hart. The Scot is looking to score in five successive Premier League games.
76' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who scored the winning goal the last time Sunderland won at Manchester City. It was Kevin Phillips.
74' THWARTED AGAIN
City look like they are going to score every time they win a corner on the right. Richards rises highest again, but Mignolet makes another super save.
72' HART ON TOP OF HIS GAME
Larsson's corner is met by McClean, whose looping header is clawed away by Hart under intense pressure from Sessegnon.
71' OFF THE CROSSBAR
Tevez threatens again. He draws Mignolet, but is driven wide and pulls the ball back for Silva, whose chip from 20 yards comes back off the crossbar.
70' A WHISKER AWAY
Aguero slides a diagonal ball through for Tevez, whose shot goes just wide of the far post with Mignolet beaten.
69' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Louis Saha replaces the disappointing Adam Johnson for Sunderland. The former City man gets a good hand as he leaves the field.
66' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
It looks like Sunderland's dismal record on this ground is set to continue. The last time the Black Cats won at Manchester City was at Maine Road in January 1998, but who scored the winning goal? Answer in a few minutes.
62' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
David Vaughan replaces Danny Rose, meaning Jack Colback will go to left-back.
61' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a wonderful striker's goal from Aguero, who got across the front of his marker to stab home a near-post cross from the left by Kolarov to finish emphatically past Mignolet.
60' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 SUNDERLAND 0
Sergio Aguero doubles City's lead.
59' RICHARDS DENIED AGAIN
Richards heads goalwards from a right-wing David Silva corner, but Mignolet makes a fine diving to his right to clutch the ball just under the crossbar.
57' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
That's the last piece of action for Balotelli, who makes way for Aguero.
55' SO CLOSE FOR BALOTELLI
Balotelli is just inches away from getting on the end of a wonderful cross from the left by Kolarov.
54' GROWING IN CONFIDENCE
Hart makes a brilliant save to his right to keep out a powerful Fletcher header, but the flag was up for offside, so it would not have counted. Kolarov then makes a last-ditch tackle to rob the rampaging Johnson.
52' ROSE OFF THE LINE
Silva's back-heel sets up Yaya Toure and his fierce drive is tipped over by Mignolet. Richards then sees a close-range effort cleared off the line by Rose.
50' BRAVE BLOCK BY RICHARDS
Barry loses the ball to Larsson in a dangerous area and the Swede floats a delightful angled ball over to Fletcher, whose left-foot volley from inside the area is bravely blocked by Richards.
48' BETTER FROM JOHNSON
Johnson finally gets the chance to run down the right and his cross results in a rare Sunderland corner, which the Black Cats promptly waste.
47' WHERE ARE THE WIDE BOYS
Sunderland really do need more in an attacking sense from wingers Adam Johnson and James McClean in this second half. Striker Steven Fletcher has been forced to live on scraps so far.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Sunderland get the second half under way. Neither side has made changes at the interval.
45' HT: MAN CITY 1 SUNDERLAND 0
Manchester City are half way to recording back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time this season as they go in at the break a goal to the good. The opener came after just five minutes after an appalling tackle from Carlos Cuellar felled Carlos Tevez just outside the Sunderland box. Aleksandar Kolarov stepped up and promptly curled an excellent free-kick over the wall and just inside the unguarded near-post. City have not quite fired on all cylinders, but they have been plenty good enough and could have extended their lead but for a fine save by Simon Mignolet, who denied Pablo Zabaleta at close-quarters. Tevez also fired across the face of goal. Sunderland have done what you would have expected of a Martin O'Neill side, they have worked tirelessly and have made it hard for City. But, also quite predictably, they have caused few alarms for the home side in the attacking third of the field.
44' POOR FROM McCLEAN
Larsson's ball into the area finds McClean in space inside the penalty area, but his acrobatic flick is nowhere near the calibre of the one managed by Anthony Knockaert for Leicester at Huddersfield in midweek.
41' SEARCHING FOR A SECOND
City are turning the screw, looking for a second. Tevez wins the home side their fourth corner of the half, but Barry's effort from 25 yards is dragged wide of the post.
39' TAME SHOT FROM FLETCHER
Sunderland manage a shot on target which is met with ironic applause from the City fans. Fletcher's effort, though, was half charged down and barely made it through to Hart.
38' MARIO WIDE OF THE MARK
City win a corner but Balotelli curls a tame shot well wide of the post. Super Mario scored twice in this match last season.
35' A FOR EFFORT
Sunderland have settled well after that early goal. They are not looking up to much as an attacking force, but you felt the floodgates might open for City following Kolarov's opener.
32' GOOD CLEARANCE FROM GARDNER
Milner drives a wicked cross in from the right after Colback loses the ball, but Gardner meets the delivery with a brave clearing header at the near post ahead of Balotelli. Kolarov fires over from the resulting corner.
30' DODGY DEFENCE
City are the first reigning Premier League champions to concede in each of their first six matches the following season. They've yet to be breached today.
26' LARSSON SAVES SUNDERLAND
Kolarov's thunderous free-kick deflects off the head of Seb Larsson and goes over the bar. The Swede felt the full force of that one.
24' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Stephane Sessegnon needs treatment on a small cut above the eye before an ill-judged high tackle from Craig Gardner on Balotelli earns City another free-kick in a dangerous position.
22' GOOD SAVE MIGNOLET
City twice go close. First Mignolet denies Zabaleta from close range after a Sunderland defensive lapse before Tevez wins the ball back and fires across the face of goal.
20' NOT SO SUPER MARIO
Balotelli sees a shot from 25 yards sail well over the bar. Roberto Mancini has been urging his Italy striker for a greater work-rate and Aguero has already been warming up. Balotelli goes down after an off-the-ball collision with Gardner, but appeared to make a bit of a meal of it.
17' FEEBLE GOING FORWARD
That's not to say they have been pulling up any trees in attack. They rank dead last in the Premier League in corners won, attempts on goal and touches in the opponent's penalty area.
16' RECORD AT AN END
Before today, Sunderland had been the only team in the Premier League not to have gone a goal behind in any of their matches this season.
13' MILNER IN THE WARS
James Milner has suffered a leg injury after making a tackle on Sessegnon, but is able to continue.
12' NOT TOO FAR AWAY
Johnson's free-kick deflects high into the air off the City wall and Sessegnon volleys goalwards but sees his shot go just over the crossbar. That was a decent effort from the Benin-born forward.
10' WINS HARD TO COME BY
Sunderland's win over Wigan last weekend ended a run of 12 Premier League games without a win, Martin O'Neill's worst run as a manager in the top flight. His side are already up against it today.
8' INJURY PROBLEMS
Roberto Mancini revealed before kick-off that defenders Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic are both injured, with calf and ankle problems respectively.
6' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Cuellar pays the price for hacking down Tevez, as Kolarov curls a beauty around the wall and into the corner, giving Mignolet no chance.
5' TEVEZ LIMPS OFF
Tevez has treatment on a leg injury and leaves the field limping. He quickly returns.
5' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 SUNDERLAND 0
Aleksandar Kolarov gives City the lead.
4' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
A horrible tackle from Carlos Cuellar on Carlos Tevez earns him a deserved yellow card. That could easily have been red.
2' HURRY UP, YOU'RE LATE
There are hundreds of empty seats as the game gets under way. Have City fans lost the faith, or are they simply late getting out of bed after a heavy Friday night?
1' HERE WE GO
City kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TEAM NEWS
City make five changes from the side that won at Fulham, the most surprising being the return of Micah Richards after injury. It looks like the England man will play at the heart of central defence alongside Joleon Lescott, another player to make a return. The others to come in to the side are Aleksandar Kolarov, James Milner and Mario Balotelli. Making way are Clichy, Kompany, Nastasic, Javi Garcia and Aguero. Sunderland make just one change to the side that beat Wigan, the fit-again Carlos Cuellar taking the place of Titus Bramble in central defence.

0' PREVIEW
Manchester City will look for a convincing home victory against Sunderland this afternoon in the hope of kick-starting what has been a stuttering start to the season by the champions. This is not the City we have grown accustomed to in recent times, a side built around a solid defence that were one of the most difficult to break down in the Premier League. Instead, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the ten games they have played in all competitions this season and but for a quite brilliant display by Joe Hart in goal on Wednesday night and a dodgy penalty award would have been taken to the cleaners by Borussia Dortmund in front of their own fans in the Champions League. It gives Sunderland cause for optimism, particularly as they took four points off City last season. They also came within a whisker of completing a notable double until two late goals earned City a late draw at the Etihad Stadium which preserved their long unbeaten run at home. Looking back, those goals were to prove as important in the chase for the title as the last-gasp Sergio Aguero strike on the final day of the season. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
These two teams could not be more different in terms of dangermen. City have an embarrassment of riches and it is difficult to guess even who might start in attack today. Sergio Aguero had looked back to his livewire self since returning from injury, and for the most part that has relegated Carlos Tevez to a peripheral role on the bench. And don't forget Edin Dzeko, who often makes just a cameo appearance as a late substitute, but whose three goals have been worth four Premier League points to his team. It's a slightly different story for Sunderland. They have scored five times in the league this season and all have come from new signing Steven Fletcher. It's an impressive record from the Scotland striker, especially considering he has only had five shots on goal all season. Winger Adam Johnson will be looking to make an impact against his former club.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
City have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 56 wins to 45 by Sunderland and 21 games being drawn. At the Etihad Stadium and its predecessors, City have 39 wins to 12 by Sunderland, with a further 10 meetings ending up all square. As already mentioned, the last time these sides met on this ground was on March 31. It was a pulsating encounter which Sunderland really should have won. They led 1-0 and 3-1, with two goals from Sebastian Larsson (31 and 55 mins) and one from Nicklas Bendtner (45). But Mario Balotelli netted a first equaliser with a penalty just before half-time and then Balotelli again and Aleksandar Kolarov both scored inside the final five minutes to snatch a valuable point. Sunderland had won the earlier meeting between the sides at the Stadium of Light 1-0. After being battered for 90 minutes (City out-shot them 20 to six and had 10 corners to Sunderland's one) the Black Cats broke down the other end and won it with a last-minute strike from Ji Dong-Won. Last time out was the first occasion Sunderland had taken a point from City in the Premier League, having lost on their seven previous trips to the blue half of Manchester. Their last away win over City came at Maine Road on Jan. 17, 1998. We are not revealing the scorer of the winner in that match, because it's the answer to one of our in-commentary trivia questions.
0' FORM GUIDE
City start the weekend in sixth place, with 12 points from six matches, four points behind leaders Chelsea. Roberto Mancini's men have won three and drawn three so far and they and the leaders are two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in the top-flight. Who are the others, you might ask? Well, in fact it's today's visitors Sunderland, who have drawn four of their opening five matches and won the other. The Black Cats, of course, suffered a freak early-season postponement because of a deluge in the North East and although they currently sit 13th, victory in that game in hand over Reading would vault them up to eighth.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
City will give late fitness tests to midfielders Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure, who both suffered leg injuries in the Champions League match with Dortmund in midweek. It would certainly be a surprise if Garcia is recovered as he was taken off in the first half. Right-backs Maicon (heel) and Micah Richards (ankle) are still out, but there could be a recall for Joleon Lescott, especially with City's defence looking very porous at present. Defender Carlos Cuellar is back in the Sunderland squad having missed three games through injury. Midfielder Lee Cattermole is suspended, while Phil Bardsley (ankle) and Wes Brown (knee) remain out injured.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Lee Probert, who was appointed to the Select Group Referees List in 2007. In terms of cards-per-game the Gloucestershire official was one of the most lenient in the top flight last season, producing just 44 yellow cards and four red cards in 22 games. Probert has refereed four Premier League games this season, administering 12 cautions. His assistants today are Ron Ganfield and Dave Brian, while Martin Atkinson is the fourth official.
