West Ham United vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: WEST HAM 1 ARSENAL 3
Arsenal recover from last week's home defeat by Chelsea to record a morale-boosting victory over West Ham at Upton Park. What will please manager Arsene Wenger most about this result is the character showed by his side to recover from conceding the first goal of the match midway through the first half. West Ham's opener came from Mohamed Diame, who showed excellent composure and no little skill to curl a magnificent shot into the far corner past Vito Mannone. Arsenal felt aggrieved when Diame escaped punishment for a second bookable offence not long after, but they recovered to level four minutes before the break through Olivier Giroud, his first league goal for the club. The Hammers could not be faulted for their work-rate in the second half, but Arsenal made their possession pay finally with two goals in six minutes. Theo Walcott put the visitors ahead with a clinical finish 13 minutes from time following a lovely pass from Giroud. Santi Cazorla then capped a superb display by smashing home a shot from the edge of the box to secure the points.
90' ALMOST A FOURTH
Giroud almost nets a fourth for Arsenal, being denied by Jaaskelainen from close range after Cazorla had again supplied the assist.
90' FINE SAVE FROM MANNONE
Taylor lets fly from 25 yards, but Mannone beats the ball down at his near post. West Ham still have not given up.
86' WEST HAM BOOKING
Matt Taylor is booked for a studs-up tackle on Mikel Arteta.
85' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Laurent Koscielny replaces Lukas Podolski, who has had another good game today.
84' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Walcott played a square pass to Cazorla, who capped an excellent display with a sweetly-struck left-footer from the edge of the box that nestled in the corner.
83' GOAL: WEST HAM 1 ARSENAL 3
Santi Cazorla secures the points for Arsenal.
83' WEST HAM SUBSTITUTION
West Ham's scorer, Diame, makes way for Carlton Cole.
82' SHOT DEFLECTED WIDE
Mertesacker swivels inside the area and his goalbound shot hits Collins and deflects just wide of the post.
80' CHANCE GOES BEGGING
West Ham have a gilt-edged chance to level immediately, but unmarked in a central position, Nolan lifts the ball over the crossbar.
78' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It was a classic Arsenal counter-attack. Arteta slid a ball inside the full-back to put Walcott clear down the right and he outpaced the defence to slot low past Jaaskelainen. The former Southampton man was booked for his goal celebration.
77' GOAL: WEST HAM 1 ARSENAL 2
Theo Walcott puts Arsenal in front.
76' WENGER NOT IMPRESSED
Having looked at slow-motion replays it appears that challenge on Ramsey might have been fractionally outside the area. Try telling that to Arsene Wenger, his face is like thunder.
75' WEST HAM SUBSTITUTION
Tomkins comes on for the injured Demel.
74' PENALTY CLAIMS
Ramsey is felled in the box by Matt Taylor, but referee Phil Dowd inexplicably waves play on. Podolski then sees his shot clawed round the post by Jaaskelainen.
73' DROPPING LIKE FLIES
The news from the tunnel is that Ricardo Vaz Te has a dislocated shoulder. Ouch. In the meantime, Guy Demel limps off.
71' NOLAN WASTES GOLDEN CHANCE
The flag stays down and Kevin Nolan is clear down the right. The West Ham midfielder dithers instead of producing an instant shot, allowing Mertesacker to get in a vital tackle.
68' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
A steepling cross from the left is aimed for Carroll. Mannone comes, but fails to gather, and the West Ham striker is disappointed to see his flicked header drift wide of the gaping goal. At the other end, Cazorla shoots wide from the edge of the area.
66' TAME EFFORT FROM GIROUD
Arsenal break swiftly down the left through Podolski. Cazorla's initial shot hits Walcott, who backheels the ball forward before Giroud slides a weak shot into the side-netting.
64' WEST HAM SUBSTITUTION
It's hard to work out quite what has happened to Vaz Te, but he is not going to be able to continue. The stretcher is on and his day is done, it looks like the Portuguese may have damaged his wrist. Matt Taylor comes on as a substitute.
62' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Theo Walcott replaces Gervinho. It's about time, too.
61' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Ricardo Vaz Te leaves his foot in and appears to catch the head of goalkeeper Vito Mannone. The Arsenal goalkeeper needs treatment, as does the West Ham forward
60' TOO HIGH FROM JARVIS
Demel goes on a lung-bursting run down the right, but is brought to a halt by Vermaelen. Arsenal fail to clear the resulting throw-in but Jarvis skies a shot way over the crossbar.
57' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Kieran Gibbs has picked up a knock and he goes off, to be replaced by Andre Santos.
56' FLAG UP FOR OFFSIDE
Diame looks to have carved out a glorious chance for Nolan, but the flag is up for offside.
55' LACKING IN QUALITY
Arsenal break quickly and from a promising position on the left Gibbs delivers a cross into the crowd behind the goal. It's indicative of the lack of quality at the start of this second half.
53' SIGH OF RELIEF FROM JENKINSON
A poor pass from Jenkinson is intercepted by West Ham. Jarvis has the chance to put in a dangerous cross from the left, but Mannone reads the situation well and is out to claim.
51' UP TO THE TASK
West Ham said before the match they did not know how long Andy Carroll would last. But judging by the way the big man has tracked all the way back to the halfway line to trip an Arsenal player he looks in reasonably good shape.
48' EARLY HAMMERS THREAT
Gervinho concedes a needless early corner. For once, Noble's delivery is nowhere near its intended target of Carroll and in any case referee Dowd adjudges that Mannone was impeded and awards a free-kick.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
West Ham get the second half under way.
45' HT: WEST HAM 1 ARSENAL 1
Arsenal will be breathing a little easier as they go in at the break all square thanks to the first league goal by Olivier Giroud after five hours and five minutes of football. The Frenchman could hardly miss four minutes before the interval, the ball being put on a plate for him by Lukas Podolski's exquisite cross from the left. The Hammers had taken the lead against the run of play on 21 minutes courtesy of a rare piece of brilliance from Mohamed Diame. The former Wigan player netted with a magnificent individual effort, escaping the attentions of Aaron Ramsey before curling a delightful right-footed shot beyond Vito Mannone into the top corner. One of the half's other major talking points also centred around Diame. Having been booked for his goal celebration, the midfielder then clattered Mikel Arteta with a mistimed tackle that really should have resulted in him blowing bubbles in an early bath. Referee Phil Dowd awarded a free-kick but turned a blind eye to the severity of the offence.
45' OPPORTUNITY SPURNED
From the resulting free-kick, Carroll nods the ball down and Nolan awkwardly hooks the ball wide of the post from close range. That was a great chance for the Hammers to restore their lead.
45' ARSENAL BOOKING
Gervinho is cautioned for tripping Mark Noble.
42' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a quality reposte from the Gunners. Lukas Podolski curled a delightful dipping cross from the left in between defender James Collins and the goalkeeper which was just begging for the Frenchman to volley it home.
41' GOAL: WEST HAM 1 ARSENAL 1
Olivier Giroud nets his first league goal for Arsenal.
37' WEST HAM BOOKING
Reid is booked for a body-check on Cazorla. That was a harsh decision by Phil Dowd, especially considering what he let go before.
36' GIROUD INCHES AWAY
A floated ball from the left is helped on by Mertesacker, but Giroud is just unable to get on the end of it.
32' CARROLL GOES CLOSE
Noble hangs up a corner from the right for Carroll, who meets the ball with a free header but can only direct his effort straight into the arms of Mannone.
29' DIAME'S A LUCKY LAD
Diame is late into a tackle with Arteta and is extremely lucky not to collect a second yellow card. He really should have been dismissed for that.
26' WELL WIDE FROM RAMSEY
Ramsey carries the ball forward and strikes it sweetly from 25 yards. The Welshman's shot, though, ends up about midway between the right-hand post and the corner flag.
24' AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY
Arsene Wenger must be fuming. West Ham had hardly had a kick in the visitors' half before that opening goal.
22' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a work of brilliance from Diame. He collected the ball in the inside-left channel, cut inside the flat-footed Ramsey and curled a beauty into the top corner. Diame was subsequently booked for jumping into the crowd to celebrate.
21' GOAL: WEST HAM 1 ARSENAL 0
Mohamed Diame gives Arsenal the lead.
20' CARROLL IN THE WAY
Arsenal win a corner, Collins clears for another flag-kick. Diame fluffs his clearance from Cazorla's delivery and Giroud lashes a snap-shot which is going towards the top corner until Carroll heads away.
18' THE REAL DANGER MAN
A far more insightful statistic in my opinion is the 19 chances created in open play by Santi Cazorla, four more than any other player in the Premier League.
16' PASS MASTER
Mikel Arteta came into this match having completed more than 93 per cent of his passes. You wonder whether these are the type of five-yard square balls made famous by Ray Wilkins or the more incisive variety that actually do damage to the opposition.
12' SHUT DOWN CAZORLA
West Ham really have to do something about Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard is flitting this way and that, orchestrating the Arsenal midfield and is being given far too much time to show his skill on the ball.
10' BEST OF FRIENDS
There were at least two warm handshakes between Arsene Wenger and Sam Allardyce before the match. Will these two old adversaries still be good friends after the first contentious moment of the match?
8' IMPORTANT BLOCK FROM DEMEL
Some flowing Arsenal football carves West Ham apart. Podolski crosses from the left and Cazorla's shot is on target, but Demel throws his body in the way and the ball deflects to safety.
5' SPEEDY RECOVERY
It's good to see Winston Reid starting again for West Ham tonight. He was knocked out cold for a moment at Loftus Road on Monday after a collision with his own goalkeeper.
4' GUNNERS MEAN BUSINESS
Arsenal are causing real problems here. Lukas Podolski crosses low from the left but fortunately for the home side James Collins is in the right place to clear.
2' UNDER PRESSURE
West Ham are immediately under pressure. Podolski fires wide inside the first minute and then Giroud forces Jaaskelainen to tip his low left-foot shot round the post.
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TEAM NEWS
Both sides show two changes from their last Premier League outings. Joey O'Brien has failed a fitness test for West Ham, so George McCartney starts, but the big news is that England striker Andy Carroll is preferred to Carlton Cole in attack. For Arsenal, Per Mertesacker has recovered from a virus and comes in for Laurent Koscielny in central defence and Olivier Giroud will lead the line, with Abou Diaby the man to miss out.
0' THE TEAMS
West Ham: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins, McCartney, Noble, Diame, Vaz Te, Nolan, Jarvis, Carroll. Arsenal: Mannone, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Arteta, Ramsey, Gervinho, Cazorla, Podolski, Giroud.
0' PREVIEW
As unlikely as it might have seemed before the start of the season, West Ham can go five points clear of Arsenal with victory over the Gunners at Upton Park today. Sam Allardyce's side have yet to be beaten in front of their own fans and are fresh off a victory in another London derby, having gone to Loftus Road and beaten Queens Park Rangers on Monday night. To be fair to Arsenal, they have looked very impressive at times this season, but last Saturday's home defeat by Chelsea has set them back greatly and they simply must pick up maximum points in their next three league games – at West Ham and Norwich and at home to QPR – before the daunting trip to Old Trafford on November 3. West Ham manager Sam Allardyce kept Andy Carroll on the bench for all but 18 minutes on Monday night as the on-loan centre-forward continues to recover from a hamstring injury, but he could be sorely tempted to give the England man an outing from the off today. Carroll already boasts a game-winning goal against the Gunners from his time with Newcastle. This evening's game kicks off at 1730BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Arsene Wenger has been criticised in recent seasons for his transfer policy (just where is Marouane Chamakh?) but his summer signings have really caught the eye, with Santi Cazorla a wonderfully gifted and creative player in midfield and Lukas Podolski having seemingly adapted very quickly to the rigours of Premier League football, something his Germany team-mate Per Mertesacker glaringly failed to do. Even the wasteful Gervinho has been finding the target with regularity, having netted five goals in his last five outings. Theo Walcott may have become something of a marginal figure due to wranglings over a new contract, but he remains a potent force and his pace would cause West Ham's defence problems. For the home side, Kevin Nolan has scored three of West Ham's seven goals in the top flight this season and he has also had almost twice as many shots (21) as any other Hammer. Nolan will be very much hoping Andy Carroll returns to the fray as he appears at times to have an almost telepathic understanding with his good friend and former Newcastle team-mate.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 49 wins to 27 by West Ham and 32 games being drawn. At Upton Park, Arsenal have 21 wins to 14 by West Ham, with a further 19 meetings ending up all square. The Gunners did the double in this fixture last season, winning 3-0 at Upton Park on Jan. 15 with two goals from Robin van Persie and another from Theo Walcott, and 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on October 30, Alex Song getting the late winner. Arsenal have won the last three meetings without conceding a goal and are unbeaten in the last eight home or away, winning six. Their last defeat at West Ham came on Nov. 5 2006.
0' FORM GUIDE
West Ham have won three, drawn two and lost just one of their opening six games, their sole blemish being a dismal display at Swansea, where they lost 3-0. They start the seventh round of Premier League games in seventh place, one position and two points better off than Arsenal. West Ham have yet to be beaten at home this season, conceding just one goal at Upton Park, and Arsenal have not tasted defeat in the road. Despite Arsenal's impressive recent record in this fixture, everything points to a tight encounter.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
West Ham must decide whether to risk striker Andy Carroll from the start as the striker has seen no action since damaging his hamstring against Fulham five weeks ago. Winston Reid should be available despite being momentarily knocked unconscious at QPR on Monday, but Joey O'Brien (hamstring), who hurt his hamstring in that match, is far less likely to play. Jack Collison (knee) and Alou Diarra (thigh) remain out. Arsenal are hopeful Per Mertesacker will have recovered from a virus, but definitely ruled out are goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny (ankle), midfielders Abou Diaby (thigh), Jack Wilshere (ankle), Emmanuel Frimpong (knee) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) and defender Bacary Sagna (broken leg).
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Phil Dowd, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2001. The man from Stoke-on-Trent showed 105 yellow cards in 28 games last season, the second most among Premier League officials and he had a higher yellow cards per game ratio (3.79) than anyone else. He also dismissed three players and awarded more fouls than any other referee. Dowd has cautioned eight players in three top-flight matches this season and got an early red card under his belt on the opening day of the season with the second-half dismissal of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger at West Brom. Dowd's assistants today are Scott Ledger and Mick McDonough, while Andre Marriner is the fourth official.
