Swansea City vs. Reading
Minute Commentary
90' MAGIC MCCARTHY KEEPS IT LEVEL
Alex McCarthy made a series of wonder stops to hold Swansea City to a 2-2 draw with Reading at the Liberty Stadium. The young goalkeeper pulled off a catalogue of stunning saves and was unlucky not to earn his team a victory. Reading's goals came during a fairly sedate first half through Pavel Pogrebnyak's shot under Michel Vorm's body and Noel Hunt's terrific over-the-shoulder volley. After the break both sides created countless chances, the Swans pulling one back through Michu's diving header. Wayne Routledge then secured the equaliser, calmly dispatching Luke Moore's through ball. McCarthy denied Moore and Ki Sung-Yueng at the death, while Ashley Williams cleared off the line in the 90th minute. In the end the scoreline could've been so much higher for both outfits, but each will likely be happy with a point.
90' FULL TIME SWANSEA 2 READING 2
The final curtain falls on a scintillating half. 2-2 is the final result.
90' LAST CHANCE
That's surely it now as Robson-Kanu soars to head Shorey's corner over the crossbar.
90' SIDE-NETTING
The chances are flying thick and fast now, with de Guzman firing a low drive into the side-netting.
90' DOUBLE CHANCE
Adam le Fondre has a chance to score but sends a volley weakly into Vorm's arms, and moments later Jimmy Kebe shoots a yard wide from inside the box.
90' OFF THE LINE
Robson-Kanu's cross baffles Vorm, who flaps and allows Jem Karacan to prod the ball goalwards. The immense Ashley Williams somehow gets back to punt the ball over his own bar from right on the line.
89' SUBSTITUTION
Swansea are hammering hard on the door as de Guzman slices a shot way wide from 20 yards out. Reading bring Hal Robson-Kanu on for Tabb in a last-minute change.
86' PENALTY SHOUT
As Pablo Hernandez's shot flies into the area, the Spaniard's effort appears to strike the hapless Shorey on the arm. Reading are overjoyed when the ref fails to spot it. Moments later Jonathan de Guzman comes on for Michu.
83' SWANS THREATEN
Swansea are looking threatening now; this time the ever-energetic Sung-Yueng shapes to shoot twice on the edge of the box but in the end is dispossessed by dogged work from Karacan.
80' SUBSTITUTION
Brian McDermott sends on Adam le Fondre for Pogrebnyak in an effort to restore his team's advantage.
78' GOAL!!! SWANSEA
WAYNE ROUTLEDGE makes the scores level with 12 minutes to go! The Englishman plays a super one-two with Moore and makes no mistake on this occasion, thwacking a strike into the corner of the goal with his right boot.
76' SHAKY SHOREY
Shorey comes very close to ruining things for his team with a suicidal chest down inside the six-yard box. Moore looks set to snap up the chance until Kaspars Gorkss sticks out a long leg to clear the danger.
73' YELLOW CARD
Roberts gets himself a caution within a minute of appearing, for knocking over Williams.
72' SUBSTITUTION
Jason Roberts comes on for Hunt.
71' GOAL!!! SWANSEA
Even McCarthy can't keep it out this time as the unmarked Michu connects with Routledge's cross, the midfielder's diving header arrowing straight into the bottom-left corner.
69' OVER THE BAR
Sung-Yueng exchanges passes with Hernandez and leans back to send a drive sailing over the bar from 18 yards. The South Korean claims a foul in the build-up but Mike Dean waves it away dismissively.
66' AND ANOTHER
From the resulting corner, Williams heads the ball down and towards the corner, where McCarthy somehow extends a glove to keep it out. That's the fourth brilliant save he's made in this game.
65' ANOTHER GREAT SAVE
McCarthy is having an absolute blinder! Ki Sung-Yueng powers into the box and curls what looks like a certain goal, only to see the miraculous McCarthy get down at an amazing speed to push it around the post.
62' SUBSTITUTION
Swansea replace Dyer, who has failed to run off the effects of Gorkss' elbow, with Pablo Hernandez.
60' YELLOW CARD
Jay Tabb gets himself a yellow card for a late challenge on Michu.
59' WHAT A WASTE
Chico Flores knocks Hunt over to concede a free kick. Jobi McAnuff takes it but overhits the ball in by a long way.
56' RESURGENT READING
The Royals are looking more and more assured as the match progresses. It's amazing what an injection of confidence can do for a team.
53' MOORE DENIED AGAIN
Alex McCarthy again denies Moore, who's gobsmacked to see his six-yard header pushed onto the post by the young stopper. What a player he could become.
50' DYER WINDED
The wily Gorkss lands another blow with his elbow, this time into Dyer's side. The winded winger has to take a moment before continuing.
47' TOP STOP
Luke Moore almost makes an instant impact, striding clear of the defence to shoot for goal, only to see Alex McCarthy pull off a brilliant sprawling save.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway. Michael Laudrup has made a change, bringing Luke Moore on for Graham.
45' HARD WORK PAYS OFF
Reading haven't played particularly well but find themselves two up at half time, and it's mainly been thanks to hard work. Swansea have been the better side technically but failed to take their chances, Danny Graham and Wayne Routledge both wasting super opportunities to put their side ahead. Reading kept battling and managed to take the lead when Pavel Pogrebnyak hustled Nathan Dyer off the ball and ran through to score. Noel Hunt then scored the second with a fabulous volley following a goalmouth scramble. The home side will have to attack in the second half, which could leave them open to counter-attacks. We may see a few more goals yet.
45' HALF TIME SWANSEA 0 READING 2
It's half time here at the Liberty Stadium, and Michael Laudrup has some work to do.
45' DIVE UNPUNISHED
Routledge takes a clear dive inside the box, whereupon Mike Dean ignores the appeals but fails to reprimand the offender. Odd behaviour.
44' GOAL!!! READING
A goalmouth scramble inside the Swansea box ends up in a goal as Jobi McAnuff's deflected shot from 18 yards falls to NOEL HUNT. The striker watches the ball drop over his shoulder and thumps a terrific volley across the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
43' YELLOW CARD
The first booking of the game goes to Michu after the Spaniard jumps violently into the airborne Mariappa.
41' BLOW TO THE HEAD
Danny Graham takes an elbow to the back of the head from Kaspars Gorkss and collapses to the turf. The physios charge on to administer treatment, but no foul is given.
39' AWKWARD EFFORT
Pogrebnyak's cross finds Jem Karacan running away from goal, and the Turk angles his neck to get a header on target. The awkward shot is easily caught by the keeper.
37' SO SOLID WILLIAMS
Ashley Williams has been colossal so far, soaking up almost every bit of Reading pressure. On this occasion the centre back towers above the pack to head away Nicky Shorey's dinked cross.
34' LOW POWER
Sung-Yueng takes aim from 20 yards, but the resulting low drive doesn't carry enough venom to trouble McCarthy.
31' GOAL!!! READING
Nathan Dyer loses the ball in midfield and PAVEL POGREBNYAK steals it away to charge forward and hammer a low shot at goal. It's straight at Michel Vorm but manages to squirm through the Dutchman's legs and into the net.
30' STAGNANT PATCH
The game has stagnated somewhat over the last few minutes; we need something big to liven it up.
27' ROUTLEDGE DENIED
A terrific shot from Routledge looks destined to hit the bottom corner of the net until Adrian Mariappa comes out of nowhere to apply a miraculous block. The ball bounces out to Michu, who lashes it over from the edge of the area.
24' OFFSIDE TRAPPED
Reading have already been caught offside five times; Pogrebnyak and Hunt are falling prey to Swansea's disciplined line time and again. Brian McDermott looks understandably frustrated.
21' HEADED WIDE
Ashley Williams manages to beat Chico Flores to Sung-Yueng's corner at the back post, the new Wales captain's header flying wide of the target.
18' ROUTLEDGE GOES CLOSE
Angel Rangel plays the ball into Michu, who sends Wayne Routledge clear on goal with a superb instant through ball. The winger tries to dink it over the goalkeeper with the outside of his right foot, only to see the chance palmed away.
15' LOST IN THE LIGHT
Ki Sung-Yueng sends a free kick looping over the area towards the back post. Adrian Mariappa finds himself marking two opposing forwards, both of whom lose the ball in the strong sunlight, and in the end it drops out for a goal kick.
13' SLOW REACTIONS
The away defence allow a long throw from Davies to bounce dangerously inside the area, but Graham is sluggish to react and in the end McCarthy catches it comfortably.
10' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
Danny Graham gets a fantastic chance to score with an eight-yard header, but the striker plants his effort straight at Alex McCarthy. The relieved keeper reacts well to push it over the bar. Wasteful from Graham.
7' SWANS UP FOR IT
The Swans have made all the early running, but as yet they haven't been able to stitch too many passes together. Reading are at least showing some bite in the tackle.
4' SAFETY FIRST
Following a tepid opening few minutes, Swansea are the first to threaten as Ben Davies rampages down the wing, forcing Jimmy Kebe to sprint over and put the ball out for a corner.
1' KICK OFF
The referee blows the whistle and we're underway here at the Liberty Stadium.
0' LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED
There aren't too many suprises in the starting line-ups, but we do have Wayne Routledge replacing Pablo Hernandez for Swansea, and for the Royals Jay Tabb comes in for the stricken Mikele Leigertwood.
0' READING TEAM NEWS
Adam Federici is still out with a leg injury so Alex McCarthy should start again in goal, while Mikele Leigertwood is a slight doubt after suffering a dead leg against Newcastle.
0' SWANSEA TEAM NEWS
Ashley Williams faces a late fitness test after struggling with illness and an ankle complaint. Kyle Bartley, Neil Taylor and Kemy Augustien remain on the treatment table.
0' ONE TO WATCH
The danger man for Reading has to be colossal Russian Pavel Pogrebnyak, who has the potential to terrorise Swansea's less than physical defence with his strength and aerial dominance. The striker has looked menacing in recent games and has been unlucky not to score since August's defeat at the hands of Chelsea. If his teammates keep providing the ammunition goals will surely follow.
0' BEATING THE DRUM
Defender Adrian Mariappa has been making positive noises. The Jamaican had this to say: "We're very confident going into the game. We know what they're about and we'll be looking forward to it. It's a different challenge – every game and team is different. We've all played against Swansea and we know that they like to keep possession and pass the ball. The fans were brilliant at the QPR game and on Saturday they'll be there in their numbers which will be brilliant for the team to get behind us again.”
0' CAPTAIN OF HIS COUNTRY
The week has brought some unexpected good news for Ashley Williams, who has been given the honour of captaining his country by Wales boss Chris Coleman. Aaron Ramsey was relieved of the duty after Coleman decided the youngster had been affected by the pressure, leaving the more experienced centre back to take the mantle. He'll be a proud man.
0' REF WATCH
Today's man in the middle is Mark Dean. Mr Dean has been sparing with the cards so far this season and shouldn't have too many reasons to change that this afternoon as he presides over two teams that like to play fair for the most part. The only concern could be whether Chico Flores has calmed down after reckless play in the first few games led to a suspension.
0' PREVIEW
This afternoon's clash between Swansea City and Reading at the Liberty Stadium represents a chance for somebody to break out of a rut. Both of these sides have had a rough time of it of late, the difference being the Swans enjoyed a brief but terrific start to the season before succumbing to three consecutive defeats in their last three Barclays Premier League outings. Reading have struggled all campaign, putting in some half decent performances but emerging with a mere two points. Last week's draw with Newcastle contained some encouraging signs, so Brian McDermott will be imploring his players to give more of the same. With both teams in desperate need of a morale boost, we should be in for 90 minutes of attacking football.
