Liverpool vs. Stoke City
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME ANALYSIS
No shortage of drama but ultimately few real chances at either end as Stoke came to Anfield with a clear game plan and must be given credit for achieving their intended draw. The highlights reel for Luis Suarez's role in this game will run on and on as he continually tangled with the Stoke defence. Tony Pulis' comments about diving in midweek must be viewed with an air of hypocrisy in the light of the way his side came out to stamp their 'authority' on the match. Any attempts at intricate build-up play from the home side were quashed, the tempo suffered as a result and, after Suarez was hauled down for the umpteenth time Steven Gerrard quite rightly had words with referee Lee Mason, who booked six Stoke players all-told. Moments earlier Suarez had been denied what looked like a clear penalty as Marc Wilson put in a heavy challenge inside the area. A Gerrard shot from range was Liverpool's only serious chance of the half. The second half brought much the same with Brendan Rogers' men probing for an opening that Stoke showed no sign of allowing them. As the early influence of impressive Suso and Raheem Sterling waned, the pattern for the encounter had long since been set. Joe Cole returned to the side with little impact in the second half and the depth of Liverpool's squad was manifest as Suarez toiled alone up front. Sterling struck the post, and Martin Skrtel came agonisingly close late on but Stoke looked as comfortable as a side can seem when ceding possession and offering minimal attacking threat. Two points lost for Liverpool's new boss.
90' FULL TIME
That's it from Anfield, no goals from either side.
90' CONVERSION ATTEMPT BY COLE
Four minutes of stoppage time and still Liverpool press with a corner which falls to Joe Cole who blasts it almost vertically into the stands.
90' SKRTELING IN
Ahhh! Martin Skrtel comes closest of anyone to breaking the deadlock as he sneaks in at the back post from a lofted free kick and pokes the ball agonisingly across the face of goal. That was really unlucky for the Slovak.
87' TALE OF TWO MEN
Brendan Rodgers cuts a glum figure on the touch line whilst Tony Pulis is animated in marshalling his troops to what looks like becoming a consumate display of how to secure a point away from home. They don't give an inch, keep their shape really well and contest every challenge with total commitment.
83' LUIS THE MAN
Luis Suarez has a go from a very acute angle. I can't remember a more complete performance from a striker without finding the net. Frustrated grumbles are echoing around Anfield.
81' CHANGES
This will be four without a win for Liverpool at home and despite signs of promise for the Pool, they will not, as yet, come away with maximum points. Changes for both sides: Charlie Adam off and Maurice Edu on for his Stoke debut. For Liverpool, Oussama Assaidi replaces Nuri Sahin.
78' SAHIN OFF TARGET
Joe Cole plays it into the path of Nuri Sahin who bends a 30 yard shot over the angle of post and bar. Stoke seem to have sucked the venom out Liverpool's attack. There are a few errant passes allowing the visitors to counter.
75' STALEMATE?
Skrtel, Sterling and Gerrard all try to force their way through to no avail. If Stoke come away with a point this will vindicate Tony Pulis. If Liverpool get a goal he'll no doubt rue not taking the game more to the home team.
72' STERLING EFFORT
Daniel Agger is the latest Liverpool man to break into the box and his centre finds Raheem Sterling who smashes the ball into the side netting when well placed to put it back in the danger area. That was a disappointing decision from the youngster.
68' LIVERPOOL CHANGE
It's Suso for Joe Cole. A return for the former England man who'll be pleased to get the chance to try and make an impact.
66' SUAREZ SUBDUED
Dean Whitehead continues the Stoke assault and battery on Luis Suarez who has given a lovely lesson in forward running. He got three against hapless Norwich but you have to think that the guile of a team like Stoke may prove to subdue the Reds today.
63' STOKE SWITCH
Michael Kightly is replaced by Matthew Etherington. That's a defensive change by Tony Pulis.
62' PATIENT LIVERPOOL
Glen Johnson is carrying a knock for Liverpool who are still passing it about really well and playing a patient game. Stoke's challenges aren't landing the way they were in the first period.
60' MESMERISING SUAREZ
Luis Suarez takes on the entire Stoke defence and fires just wide. Wonderful stuff from the forward but no sign of a chance being converted yet.
57' STOKE CHANCE
Michael Kightly is freed on the left wing for a Stoke chance but he can't find a team mate.
52' LIVERPOOL CREATING
This time Gerrard finds Johnson with a peach of a ball and the full back lofts it just over the bar. Liverpool seem to have more space to move into and Gerrard has found his range very well so far.
49' JOHNSON ON TARGET
Glen Johnson hits a dipping strike from the outside the area which Begovic smothers. Stoke can barely get out of their own half at the moment.
49' LIVERPOOL ON TOP
Suarez, Suso and Gerrard combine to reach the by line but Dean Whitehead dives in to prevent a cross. Liverpool on top in the opening stages.
46' SECOND HALF
We're back underway for the second half
45' HALF TIME ROUNDUP
All square at half time then with Liverpool struggling to break down Stoke's very 'hearty' approach to the game. Flashes of brilliance from their youngsters and an all-action display from Luis Suarez have had little joy with only half chances and long range efforts to show for some decent approach play. How will Brendan Rodgers respond to how Tony Pulis has set his stall out? Join us shortly for the second half...
45' HALF TIME
That's half time at Anfield, 0-0.
45' SUAREZ IN THE WARS
Asmir Begovic gathers at Luis Suarez's feet in the penalty area and berates the Uruguayan for play acting. It was 50-50 though and Suarez has shown a refreshing tendency to stay on his feet in this half with his reputation mostly preceding him when under the cosh from Stoke.
44' NOT PRETTY
Not a purist's delight, but a bruising encounter played in a good spirit, though Steven Gerrard has quite rightly begun to make his feelings clear about Stoke's agricultural tactics.
41' TACKLES FLYING IN
This always looked like a mismatched physical battle on paper and is at times hilarious as Stoke continually poleaxe diminuitive Liverpool. This time John Walters removes Glen Johnson from the pitch while in midair.
38' ATTRITIONAL BATTLE
Sustained Liverpool pressure has as yet not yielded too many clear cut chances. The likes of Raheem Sterling and Suarez, who can't stay out of the action, are too quick, and Stoke are using every trick in the book to slow them down.
35' ANFIELD WRESTLING FEDERATION
Luis Suarez is dragged to ground once again by Robert Huth who picks up a yellow. That tees up tag team wrestling in the box as Liverpool launch the resultant free kick in.
33' ROGERS THAT
There's definitely signs of the Rogers revolution in Liverpool's play. They want to play it on the floor all the time regardless of the consequences against a tough side like Stoke. Suso in particular has made a number of promising cameos.
31' POOL CHANCES
No lack of ambition but a little naivety from this young Liverpool side. Suarez won them a set piece in a fine position but they wasted it with a telegraphed pass but then the lively Suso almost wriggles his way through to set up Daniel Agger. Liverpool are on top now.
28' BITTY START
A fractured start to the game characterised by numerous stoppages and a failure by either side to settle down and take control. Steven Gerrard unleashes a trademark lash from 30 yards out which Asmir Begovic was equal to.
25' TOUGH STUFF
Luis Suarez is in for a torrid day. He's been crashed into four or five times already and now he's been denied a clear penalty after he was barged off the ball. A strong start from Stoke results in a yellow card for Michael Kightly. The referee is trying to calm things down.
23' STOKE SWAP
Stoke City have been forced to make an early change. Glenn Whelan was clearly not quite fit and Dean Whitehead has replaced him.
22' TERRIBLE FROM REINA
Wow! Terrible pass out from Pepe Reina and Charlie Adam has the chance to chip the big Spaniard who has to turn it over. That's one of a catalogue of poor defensive errors from a nervous-looking Liverpool.
19' SUAREZ POURING FORWARD
Luis Suarez's pace and power has continually worried the Stoke defence early on and this time Steven Nzonzi is forced to concede a corner.
18' SAHIN TROUBLE
Nuri Sahin is yet again muscled out of it in the middle of the park. There's nothing like playing Stoke for a welcome to English football, and he has looked a little lightweight and lacking in composure so far.
16' AIRBORN
A very dangerous Stoke free kick from the right evades everyone. Liverpool did just the same moments ago. Fascinating aerial battles emerging in this one.
11' LIVERPOOL THREATEN
Luis Suarez ties Geoff Cameron in knots and whips it into the box where Nuri Sahin can't connect. A little more attacking intent from the home team but no side can keep the ball early on.
9' GIVE AND TAKE
Nuri Sahin is again poor in losing the ball and almost allowing Stoke a run on goal. Then the Robert Huth-Luis Suarez battle begins in earnest as the big Dutchman tugs Suarez down who falls to the floor and then follows up late on Huth moments later.
4' STOKE ATTACKING
Steven Nzonzi and Michael Kightly get some joy early on. They look a potent combination on the left for Stoke.
3' WHELAN FELLED
Nuri Sahin is late on Glen Whelan as Stoke threaten the Liverpool goal with what will be the first of many long balls you suspect. Whelan passed a late fitness test to be included.
1' KICK OFF
We're underway with Stoke in their change blue and maroon stripes and Liverpool in red.
0' HERE WE GO
Welcome to Anfield for the meeting of two sides looking for some early season momentum. Liverpool would leapfrog Stoke with a win whilst the Potters could climb into the top half of the table. As 'You'll Never Walk Alone' rings out around the stadium, we're all set for what will no doubt be a rambunctious encounter.
0' STOKE'S TEAM
Anfield returns for Charlie Adam and Peter Crouch, but Michael Owen will not feature. He has a minor injury. The Stoke line-up is Begovic, Cameron, Huth, Shawcross, Wilson, Walters, Nzonzi, Whelan, Adam, Kightly, Crouch. Subs: Sorensen, Jones, Edu, Whitehead, Upson, Etherington, Jerome.
0' THE LIVERPOOL SIDE
Liverpool do indeed start with the side that faced Norwich last week: Reina, Wisdom, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Gerrard, Allen, Sahin, Fernandez Saez, Suarez, Sterling. Subs: Jones, Henderson, Cole, Assaidi, Coates, Carragher, Borini.
0' RED OR DEAD?
The perpetual saga of turbulent times continues at Liverpool. They followed a 5-2 thrashing of Norwich last weekend by surrendering of a two-goal lead at Anfield on Thursday night as Udinese came from behind to sink what was virtually a full strength side. Following the game, Brendan Rogers called his players "lazy" and lacking in concentration. Granted few of the eleven on show were actually signed by that man, but a fickle boardroom attitude has been a hallmark of the Gillett era. Cue an assertion from captain Steven Gerrard that the top four is an achievable target this term. Much-coveted Daniel Agger signed a new two-year deal this week, so he must believe in Rogers and the promise of success. Like it or not, Liverpool badly need to start winning games. They have one point from a possible nine at home in the league this season. Stoke came away with a point here last season. Their visit represents exactly the type of test Rogers' side must pass to display their credentials for the season, and appeal for respectability in the eyes of the Kop. Any part to play from former favourites Owen or Crouch would only rub salt in the wound.
0' LIFE DRAWING AND THE POTTERS WHEEL
Stoke arrive in Liverpool off the back of a string of good results. Beating in-form Swansea and only going down 1-0 to Chelsea are a reflection of the fact that Tony Pulis' men will be, surprise-surprise, dare I say it, difficult to break down. Amazingly they've drawn 17 of their last 12 league games...or is it 12 of their last 17, I forget. Apparently talks with Land Rover for next year's kit sponsorship are on hold only until they've considered late bids from The Great Wall Of China and Big Bob's Bouncers and Bodybuilders International Ltd. We shouldn't laugh; they're a cultured side; Ryan Shawcross has made the England squad. Rumours he was there simply to provide ballast as the hot air expelled by Ashley Cole affected the stability of the team bus are unconfirmed. Prior to their 2-0 win against Swansea, they held Arsenal and Manchester City. Coming out of pre-season, they went on a mazy, Crouch-like, legs-a-flailing, yellow-card-strewn dribble of five consecutive 1-1 score lines, starting with their traditional grudge match against 'the old enemy' Kansas City Wizards. League-wise though, you could argue that the last time they beat a decent side was...a 2-0 win against Swansea back in February. One would not bet against them being the villain of the piece at Anfield. Messrs Owen, Crouch and Adam have all heard the Kop roar their name. Jermaine Pennant also plays for Stoke. He will hope to prove to his old club that rough and tumble are not just a way of describing his typical night out in Liverpool.
0' LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS
Brendan Rogers will likely keep faith with the side that trounced Norwich. Should that be the case, Raheem Sterling, Suso and Andre Wisdom, three of the nine teenagers to have started Premier League games this season, will line up alongside new acquisitions Nuri Sahin and Joe Allen. Injury-wise, Liverpool may be boosted by the return of Jose Enrique who will have a late fitness test on a knee injury.
0' STOKE TEAM NEWS
Should Glen Whelan pass a late fitness test on an injured hamstring and Charlie Adam recover from a shoulder injury, Stoke will have no major injury concerns. Andy Wilkinson must serve the last of his three-match ban though.
