90' SOUTHAMPTON 2 FULHAM 2
Well, what a grandstand finish that was. Rewind back an hour, and Southampton had a deserved lead at the halfway stage thanks to a first headed goal from Jose Fonte. The game swung this way and that in the second period as Fulham improved on their first half performance, and a Jan Hooiveld own goal made it 1-1 on 69 minutes after the Saints defender knocked a John Arne Riise shot into his own net on the slide. Both teams went in search of a winner after that, which looked to have fallen to Fulham with two minutes of normal time to play when Kieran Richardson converted a Sascha Riether pull-back. However, in the 90th minute Fonte once again proved himself to be a threat from set-pieces when he nodded in a Daniel Fox free kick to see that the game finished 2-2. The home side will be buzzing off the elation of a late equaliser, but in hindsight will be disappointed not to have taken all three points today.

A low 25 yard shot from Jay Rodriguez is meat and drink for Mark Schwarzer. Jose Fonte makes a sliding block to save Paulo Gazzaniga from keeping out a Hugo Rodallega effort from an angle at the other end shortly afterwards.

Hugo Rodallega continues to need more support up front for Fulham, but then again who is there on the visitors' bench who could change things? Pajtim Kasami would probably be the player most likely to be able to shake things up.

Jay Rodriguez, Jason Puncheon and Morgan Schneiderlin are involved in a speedy Southampton break that culminates with Rickie Lambert blazing first-time over the bar from about 12 yards out. The Saints striker snatched at that one, although it was a tricky finish to execute.

Morgan Schneiderlin halts a Fulham counter-attack by felling John Arne Riise and collecting a booking. Riise had a painful moment just before when Jason Puncheon accidentally caught the full-back's head with his studs.

It's been an absorbing game so far. Jose Fonte gave Southampton an early lead when he headed home from a corner, although he probably wouldn't have done had Fulham had someone positioned at the back post as is routine. Southampton have shown the attacking threat we know they have in their locker since then, creating some good chances of which Jason Puncheon and Rickie Lambert had the best two. Hugo Rodallega has had nothing to go on at the other end, bar a late opportunity that was gifted to him by Jos Hooiveld. A deserved lead overall for the home side.

Jos Hooiveld doesn't deal with a routine long ball that bounces over his head, enabling Hugo Rodallega to steal in behind him. Paulo Gazzaniga comes off his line to narrow the angle and Rodagella slashes his finish wide.

Aaron Hughes climbs high to head a Bryan Ruiz corner just above the head of Paulo Gazzaniga, who catches successfully. Four minutes of injury time have been added on due to Frazer Richardson's injury and other stoppages earlier.

Jason Puncheon draws the Fulham defence towards him in the Fulham box, then dinks the ball over to Rickie Lambert in space. Lambert only has the keeper to beat albeit from an angle, but he wrongly opts to shoot near-post where Mark Schwarzer saves well.

Jose Fonte heads a Fulham long ball forward straight at Alex Kacaniklic, who should shoot almost immediately. Instead the youngster dallies before having a shot blocked that cannons back into him and out for a goal kick.

Damien Duff is the man at fault this time as a loose ball from him allows Jay Rodriguez to start a Southampton attack. Fulham eventually quash the danger but they need to step their game up.
33' SCHWARZER ERROR
Mark Schwarzer drills a low ball straight into Steven Davis, who finds Rickie Lambert. The striker spots Adam Lallana racing onwards into the box and slides the ball his way, before the Southampton academy product's ball across goal finds no one.

Hugo Rodallega has had hardly any service into him up front on his own for Fulham. Dimitar Berbatov's absence has been telling for the visitors so far.

Following that earlier Southampton substitution, Maya Yoshida has been playing at right-back rather than Frazer Richardson's direct replacement Jos Hooiveld. From the looks of things, Yoshida isn't too used to playing there.

Fulham learn from the goal conceded to station Sascha Riether on the back post, who blocks a close-range Jason Puncheon effort off the line from an Adam Lallana corner. Southampton have the ball in the net from the following corner but Mark Clattenburg spotted a push which sees the goal disallowed.

It's been a good spell for Fulham either side of that recent Southampton chance. Bryan Ruiz has an effort blocked in the area, and then Damien Duff knocks a ball back in after a corner is cleared that Aaron Hughes is on the end of to head over.

That win over Aston Villa is where all of Southampton's points have come from this season, and their following game at Everton last weekend saw them return to losing ways to be defeated 3-1. Fulham suffered their first home defeat in the league last time out against champions Manchester City, that coming after their debut away win this season with a 2-1 victory at Wigan. Coming into this game Fulham sit comfortably in ninth in the Premier League with nine points, while Southampton's three points suspends them in eighteenth above Norwich and QPR.
0' PREVIEW
The first Premier League game of four this Sunday sees Southampton host Fulham at St. Mary's. Southampton have shown despite their struggling start to their return season in the top flight that they can be quite the attacking force, already reaching double figures in goals scored this campaign and demolishing Aston Villa 4-1 last time out on this ground. Defensively it's been a different story, with the Saints conceding a poor average of three goals per game so far. Fulham have also not struggled for league goals, being only one short of leading scorers Manchester United on 14 coming into this weekend, and even on the road they've already put some demons to bed by recording an away win at Wigan and giving Manchester United a run for their money at Old Trafford. All of the above suggests we're in for a cracking contest today, but then again it could turn out the opposite – that's just football for you.
