90' TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2 - 0 ASTON VILLA
A bright second half display helped Spurs to a comfortable win over Aston Villa at White Hart Lane to extend their run of Premier League wins to four. Decent early on, the Lilywhites wasted opportunities through Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe, and Villa limited the attacking threat of the hosts for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes. Christian Benteke wasted two great chances to punish Spurs' profligacy at the start of the second period, and Villa were made to pay as Spurs took control of the game. First Steven Caulker's heel provided the handy deflection to turn Jermain Defoe's shot goalwards, and Aaron Lennon sealed the result with an excellent shot through the legs of his full-back and into the far corner. Three points for the home side was the fair result on the balance of play and is a welcome boost to Andre Villas-Boas burgeoning reputation going into the international break. Aston Villa will certainly have easier afternoons in the Premier League, but showed enough to suggest that they will trouble lesser teams than Spurs with their pace and movement. At White Hart Lane it finished Tottenham Hotspur 2, Aston Villa 0.
90' SHOWBOATING SPURS
Emmanuel Adebayor, Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend ping the ball between them down the right, teasing the Villa defence. A cross sends the ball over to Gareth Bale, who keeps the ball and ends up working it back to the right for another spell of showboating keep-ball.

The fourth official's board shows four minutes of added time, although the game is being played out at half-speed at the moment, with Spurs in total control.
87' BALE HITS THE WOODWORK
Spurs break at pace, and Moussa Dembele feeds Gareth Bale down the left. The wide man's drilled shot escapes Brad Guzan, but comes back off the woodwork to give Villa a major let-off.

Andros Townsend replaces goalscorer Aaron Lennon. The winger has been excellent today, and will surely be pushing for an England start during the international break.

Emmanuel Adebayor dinks a one-two return to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the area, and only a wonderful block by Ron Vlaar prevents the midfielder's shot from testing the goalkeeper.

White Hart Lane rose as one to salute the efforts of Clint Dempsey - although in truth the American has been a bit out of the game today. On came another summer signing, Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Joe Bennett is still receiving treatment by the side of the pitch after falling awkwardly. Villa have made all of their changes, so will play the game out with just ten men.

Kyle Walker is given time and space to get his cross in by Emmanuel Adebayor's classy lay-off, and he curls the ball straight on to the head of Clint Dempsey six yards out. All the American had to do was hit the target, but his header slides wide of the far post. That's a bad miss!

Kyle Walker blocks off Brett Holman and picks up a needless booking as Aston Villa counter. It's a relief for Villa, as they have been on the rack since the second goal.

Emmanuel Adebayor's lovely run earns him a chance to shoot from the left of the area, and the striker is unfortunate to see his effort hit Clint Dempsey.

Aaron Lennon has been too much for Villa to handle today, and afforded space on the corner of the box, he stepped outside his full-back before drilling a shot through the defender's legs and into the far bottom corner. It's the sort of goal that Lennon should really score more often, and you can tell from his celebration that he's delighted to have got on the score-sheet.

Aaron Lennon again feeds Jermain Defoe, and the striker cuts inside and goes for the goal that he probably feels he deserves. However, his effort rises well over the bar.

Jermain Defoe was allowed to bring the ball down in the area from Gareth Bale's corner. The striker's shot was heading wide of the near post, but hit the heel of Steven Caulker and flew into the back of the net. The central defender has in fact been credited with the goal by the stadium announcer, and you'd imagine that will stand.

Sandro's skill in midfield starts a Spurs attack, and with Gareth Bale taking defenders away it's left for Jermain Defoe to shoot... only for the England striker to fire agonisingly wide.

Another stunning Gareth Bale delivery is inches away from being turned home by Steven Caulker.

Hugo Lloris' quick distribution is not expected by the Spurs defence and Villa latch on to the loose ball. Marc Albrighton has time and space to pick out an unmarked Christian Benteke with his cross, and the striker hangs his head in shame as his header misses the target. What a chance!
49' THAT'S BETTER BY BENNETT!
The full-back shows Aaron Lennon the outside, which is not normally the best of plans, but Bennett does superbly to push the England winger wide and pressure him into giving the ball away.

Aaron Lennon is hauled down by Joe Bennett as Spurs counter and the full-back picks up a booking... which is far from ideal when you're facing Lennon.

A ball pulled back by Gabriel Agbonlahor falls to Christian Benteke, but his shot is straight at Hugo Lloris. A yard either side and that was a goal.
46' SECOND HALF
Tottenham Hotspur were quite late to come out from the changing rooms, and just moments after emerging from the tunnel they get the game back underway.
45' HALF-TIME
The whistle goes to end a frustrating first half at White Hart Lane. Opportunities in the first couple of minutes for Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe have been the closest that Spurs have come to open the scoring, and Villa will be delighted that they've kept it tight and limited their hosts to so few goal-scoring chances. With Gabriel Agbonlahor on the field and Darren Bent likely to come on, there will always be a threat on the counter for the visitors to cause an upset in the second half.
41' FRUSTRATING HALF FOR THE HOME SIDE
Despite all of their possession and occasional sparks of attacking threat, it's been a bit disappointing that Spurs have yet to convert their dominance into goals. That has been a theme of the season for the Lilywhites, with West Brom and Panathinaikos two obvious examples when they were made to pay.
39' GUZAN OFF HIS LINE
Brad Guzan shows that there are two keepers on the pitch who are sharp to come off their line, and it's just as well that he does, with Clint Dempsey waiting to get on the end of a Moussa Dembele cross.
37' NO SUPPORT FOR LENNON
The speed of Aaron Lennon is frightening, and he does superbly to latch on to a long pass and get the ball under control in behind the Villa defence. It looked so unlikely that he would manage it that none of his team-mates had gambled on getting up in support - so the chance went begging.

Kyle Walker is sloppy to give the ball away, and only the lightning reactions of Hugo Lloris to come charging off his line and beat Gabriel Agbonlahor to the ball saves Spurs.

Gareth Bale free-kick delivery results in a scramble inside the area, and Jan Vertonghen's shot flies over the bar under pressure from a number of panicking defenders.

Aston Villa make the most of an opportunity on the ball, playing out from the back and forcing Hugo Lloris to come charging off his line to end the move. That's a bit more like it from the visitors - they'd certainly like more opportunities to have a go at the new Spurs keeper.

The Villa fans were on their feet applauding throughout as the clock stood at 19 minutes. Impressively, so too were many of the Spurs fans, appreciating the nature of the support from Villa.

Gareth Bale gets a painful knee to the small of his back and is down receiving some attention from the Tottenham medical staff. It gives both teams a chance for a breather after a breakneck start to proceedings.
14' LUNG-BURSTING RUN BY BALE
A loose pass gifts Gareth Bale possession on the edge of his own area, and no Villa player manages to get close to him until his attempted cross from the by-line is cut out for a corner.
12' PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK
Spurs are clearly intent on playing the ball out from the back. The lack of mentions for Villa tells you that it's a tactic that's working - the visitors are barely seeing the ball.
9' CONTROVERSIAL MOMENT
Gareth Bale spots an opportunity to show off his pace and beats the racing Brad Guzan to a loose ball way outside of the area. The winger goes down but doesn't claim for the free-kick as there was no contact. It looked like he was anticipating being clattered so got out of the way... although naturally the Spurs fans are claiming for a sending off and the Villa fans are shouting 'dive'. Who's right? Probably neither of them.

Gareth Bale's free-kick is in the perfect channel, but neither Jan Vertonghen or Jermain Defoe can quite get a touch on the stretch.
4' HIGH TEMPO START
There is no sign of the midweek malaise from Spurs, who are going for the Villa jugular early on. Credit to the visitors for matching up to the home side and making it difficult for them.

Hugo Lloris comes off his line to claim and bowls the ball out to launch a counter-attack. Jan Vertonghen bursts clear down the left and curls in a peach of a cross to pick out Jermain Defoe, but the striker can't keep his shot down from eight yards out. That should really have been 1-0!

Aston Villa get the game underway but give the ball away in the centre of the park and are very nearly made to pay with an early goal. Jermain Defoe had Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale making runs either side of him, and the Welshman was the one handed the opportunity to shoot - drilling his effort wide of the far post. That's a huge start by Spurs!

The team news is in at White Hart Lane. Spurs make just the one change from the team that beat Manchester United... but it's a big one! Brad Friedel's astonishing run of consecutive Premier League starts comes to an end, with Hugo Lloris making his first appearance in the English top-flight. It's a big call by AVB, but it seems like a good time to make the change. The big news for Villa is that Darren Bent misses out against his former club, despite his goal last week. Bent is on the bench, while Emmanuel Adebayor returns from injury in the home dugout to complete a strong-looking set of subs.

0' GLASS HALF FULL FOR VILLA
After a disappointing August, the second month of the season was much better for Aston Villa. Five points picked up in the league and a cup win over Manchester City were the positives… although a 4-1 hammering at Southampton kept the fans' feet on the ground. After the dull dirge of McLeish last season, Paul Lambert has plenty of patience to work with, and even defeat today is unlikely to change that.
0' BOO BOYS OF THE LANE
The start of the season saw a civil war in the stands at White Hart Lane, with opinion very much split over the wisdom of the decision to replace Harry Redknapp with AVB. Spurs' home games this season have featured boos at half and full-time, so it will be interesting to see what happens today. The win against United should have gone some way towards getting the boo boys on side.
0' TOTTENHAM VS VILLA
A week after Tottenham ended their Old Trafford hoodoo, the Lilywhites return to north London to take on Aston Villa on the final day of Premier League action before the international break. A lackadaisical performance against Panathinaikos in the Europa League on Thursday should ensure that there is no league hangover for Spurs (at least their fans will hope so), and three points would keep Andre Villas-Boas' side in touch with the battle at the top of the table.
