90' STERLING EFFORT SEALS IT FOR REDS
Raheem Sterling slotted home the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory for Liverpool over Reading at Anfield. The Reds wasted a procession of chances and should have run up a cricket score, with their opponents proving almost as wasteful after they finally got going in the second half. Luis Suarez and Nuri Sahin were both guilty of squandering gilt-edged chances in the first half, which was punctuated by Sterling's 29th-minute finish from Suarez's dinked pass. Liverpool's first-half dominance was less pronounced after half time, but the chances kept coming and Suarez kept wasting them, along with fellow offenders Glen Johnson and Jonjo Shelvey. Reading could easily have scored a couple themselves, with Garath McLeary and Pavel Pogrebnyak denied by Brad Jones in the home goal, but in the end Liverpool held on for a much-needed home victory. Yet again the Royals must pick themselves up and bear on.

Roberts is fouled once again, this time by Gerrard, and again Shorey takes it. This time the full back pokes a low shot through the wall and into the arms of the waiting Jones.

Henderson is penalised for a hefty challenge on Roberts, and Reading have themselves a late free kick. Nicky Shorey lofts it into the area but Jones is on hand to punch it clear with aplomb.

Jose Enrique makes an instant impact with a terrific overlap and low cross towards Luis Suarez, who gets it all wrong with a sliced kick that ends up on the roof of the net.

The action is still swinging back and forth, with Reading giving a much better account of themselves now. A flurry of high-intensity play sees Gerrard's curler saved by McCarthy and Jones keep out a McAnuff drive, before Suarez sends a low shot just wide.

Yet another cutback from Suarez creates a chance for a teammate. This time it's Shelvey who stands to benefit, but the England man miscontrols with his knee and the chance goes begging.

Pogrebnyak produces an embarassing air-shot inside the box following good work from McAnuff, with Jimmy Kebe unable to pick up the pieces.

A wonderful piece of vision from Sahin sets up Sterling, who delays his final ball into Suarez slightly and fatally. The much-maligned forward ends up poking his effort over the bar from six yards out.

Reading are getting bolder now. McAnuff takes advantage of a slip from Joe Allen to move inside from the right and test Jones with a fierce right-footed shot.

Daniel Agger picks up the first booking of the game for a mistimed sliding tackle.

The visiting defence is ripped apart by a lightning-quick Liverpool counter, allowing Suarez time in the box. The forward wastes it, however, with a misplaced cutback that evades the waiting Sahin and Gerrard.

Alex McCarthy makes a howler with a terrible pass out that falls straight to Suarez. The young keeper redeems himself with a top-class save from the striker's resulting shot. Moments later Reading storm down the other end of the pitch, where the previously unused Brad Jones pulls off his own excellent save from a Garath McCleary effort.
50' JOHNSON TRIES HIS LUCK
Johnson gets a brace of shots away; the first bounces back off Adrian Mariappa, while the second is bent narrowly wide of the left-hand post.
48' CLIPPED OVER
Guthrie goes to whip in a free kick from the left flank, but succeeds only in steering his cross high and over the bar.
46' FAST WORK
Raheem Sterling springs into action quickly with a smart turn and shot after receiving a short ball from Suarez. McCarthy manages to beat it away.

The sides are back out and the second half is underway. Neither manager has seen fit to make any changes at the break, athough Suarez is limping slightly following that challenge form Gorkss at the end of the opening period.
45' ALL REDS
These 45 minutes of football have belonged solely to Liverpool, who have looked a class act from start to finish and should be further ahead. The attacking trio of Luis Suarez, Suso and Raheem Sterling have tormented Reading since the first whistle and got their reward when Sterling ran onto Suarez's 29th-minute dinked pass and provided a tidy finish. Suarez himself went close with an exquisite chip and twice set up Nuri Sahin for penalty-box efforts. The best that the visitors have been able to muster is one 35-yard drive from Mikele Leigertwood and a Jobi McAnuff cross that almost found Jimmy Kebe at the back post. The Reds must now make their dominance count with further goals, or could leave themselves open to a sucker punch from ever-determined Reading.

A Gerrard pass finds Sterling on the left, and the England under-21 winger's low cross finds the onrushing Glen Johnson, who shoots straight at the keeper from 16 yards out.
44' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
The Royals win a free kick in a dangerous position as Daniel Agger chops down Pavel Pogrebnyak from behind. Nicky Shorey steps up to take it but hits his cross disappointingly into the wall.
41' LEIGERTWOOD SHOOTS OVER
Mikele Leigertwood finds himself in space 35 yards out and lets rip with an ambitious drive that flies comfortably over the bar.
40' SUPER SUSO
The young Spaniard Suso is having a terrific game so far, holding off experienced opponents in the midfield zone and showing assured vision with some top passes.
37' IRONIC CHEERS
A cheer almost as loud as that for the goal goes up as Luis Suarez goes down on the edge of the box and is actually awarded a free kick. The heavily ironic cheering goes on for nearly a full minute.
34' SLOPPY PLAY
A mistake from Danny Guthrie sees Suarez steal possession, and the Uruguayan drives instantly forward. On reaching the 18-yard line he checks back and pulls the trigger, forcing a full-length diving save from the goalkeeper.

That goal seems to have given Liverpool yet more confidence. They're not allowing Reading a touch of the ball at the moment.
29' GOAL!!! LIVERPOOL
Liverpool finally get the goal their play deserves as Suarez dinks a lovely ball over the defence and RAHEEM STERLING sprints after it to slide a simple finish past the onrushing McCarthy and into the bottom corner. The precocious Sterling has been threatening to do that all game.
27' DOUBLE CHANCE
Twice in two minutes Suarez makes his way into the area and spins to lay the ball back for Sahin. First the Turkish youngster skies his shot over the bar, and the second time he misses the ball entirely. Some target practice needed perhaps.

Karacan is unable to carry on and is withdrawn in favour of Garath McCleary.
24' SO CLOSE FROM SUAREZ
Suarez twists and turns on the edge of the box and spots McCarthy off his line to deliver a delightful chip that has the keeper beaten but just clears the crossbar to land on the roof of the net. That was an exquisite effort.
23' INJURED PARTY
That challenge from Gerrard was a strong one, and it forces Karacan to receive treatment off the pitch. Fortunately the stricken midfielder manages to re-enter the fray after a couple of minutes.
21' RAPID ATTACK
The home side break forward with a high-speed attack. Steven Gerrard tackles Jem Karacan in midfield and feeds Sterling, who takes the ball to the byline but miscues his cutback to the frustrated Suarez.
18' LONG-RANGER
Raheem Sterling cuts in from the left flank and tries his luck from 30 yards. The shot lacks the necessary power and in the end makes an easy save for Alex McCarthy.

The skill of Luis Suarez takes the speedy South American past three men, but he can't quite beat a fourth inside the box.
13' ON THE COUNTER
Brendan Rodger's men are dominating possession against their gaffer's former club, but could be vulnerable to a counter-attack. Once or twice Reading have broken at speed but have been unable to make it count.
10' SLALOM FROM SUSO
Suso's terrific slalom-style run from a position on the right wing sees the Spaniard approach the 18-yard line, where a driven left-footed shot deflects off Suarez's back and out for a goal kick.
7' TERRIFIC TACKLE
A clever one-two between Glen Johnson and Luis Suarez sees the defender fly into the box, but a slightly loose touch allows Kaspars Gorkss to thunder across with a superb last-ditch sliding tackle.
5' RED DAWN
Following that shaky start the Reds are beginning to assert themselves with a series of slick passing moves. One pass over the top from Suso sees Nuri Sahin caught narrowly offside.
2' VITAL HEADER
Glen Johnson steps in with a vital header as Jobi McAnuff's cross to the far post almost finds the lurking Jimmy Kebe. Liverpool's defending looked slack there.

Brad Jones starts in goal for Liverpool as Pepe Reina has failed to recover from a hamstring injury, while Nuri Sahin plays in midfield and Andre Wisdom keeps his place at the back. Reading bring in Danny Guthrie, with Mikele Leigertwood also starting on his return from injury.

Spanish playmaker Suso has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool and will be full of confidence today. The 18-year-old has broken into the side and made a big impact this season, and could be just the man to infilitrate a Reading defence that looks sluggish at times. With Fabio Borini injured, Suso might just play a big part in Liverpool's season.

Reading striker Jason Roberts has refused to wear a 'Kick It Out' t-shirt in the anti-racism body's annual week of action. The experienced Roberts has decided not to take part following what he perceives as injustices over the recent abuse cases involving Luis Suarez and John Terry.
0' STRIKING SHORTAGE
The Reds have been dealt an injury blow with the news that Fabio Borini has been ruled out for three months with a broken foot that the striker aggravated while on duty with Italy under-21s. It's a development that makes the club's failure to sign another forward in the transfer window look yet more ludicrous; Andy Carroll could yet be recalled from his stint at West Ham in a desperate bid to fill the gap.

The man in charge of today's encounter is the inexperienced Roger East. The Wiltshire-based referee is in his first season as a Premier League referee and has issued two red cards in his only two matches so far. On Mr East's mind will surely be the Luis Suarez conundrum; to give a penalty or not to give a penalty, that is the question.

This afternoon's clash at Anfield between Liverpool and Reading should be a hard-fought encounter; both sides are near the bottom of the Barclays Premier League and in desperate need of points, but while one of the clubs involved might expect to find itself there or thereabouts, the other would most certainly not. Brendan Rodgers' Anfield revolution has shown moments of promise but a meagre points return so far, although the ex-Swansea manager seems to have the backing of the fans for now. The Royals have shown some improved form of late, but have still given away two-goal leads in each of their last two league games to be held to exasperating draws. An in-form Liverpool may prove too much for Brian McDermott's fighters, but if they can get at their opponents early who knows what could happen?
