Tottenham Hotspur vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FT: TOTTENHAM 2 CHELSEA 4
Chelsea emerge victorious from a thrilling London derby to get one over their former manager Andre Villas-Boas and momentarily open up a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League. It was all so comfortable in the first half, as the Blues controlled the match and took a single-goal lead into the break courtesy of a 17th-minute volley by Gary Cahill. But the game was turned on its head at the start of the second half, with William Gallas levelling from close range within 63 seconds of the restart and Jermain Defoe showing a striker's instincts to steer home a misdirected shot from Aaron Lennon. Spurs looked on their way to a fifth straight victory, but not for long, as two goals in three minutes from Juan Mata midway through the second half put Chelsea back in front. There were chances at both ends after that in a thrilling match, but the Blues secured the points after Mata provided substitute Daniel Sturridge with a last-minute tap-in. It's only the second time in the Premier League era Chelsea have won at Arsenal and Tottenham in the same season.
90' GOAL: SPURS 2 CHELSEA 4
Daniel Sturridge makes the points secure for Chelsea, netting from close range with Juan Mata the architect.
90' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Frank Lampard replaces Eden Hazard.
90' CHANCES GO BEGGING
Chelsea should be out of sight, but Eden Hazard's final pass is mispalced after he had been gifted the ball by Adebayor. Cech is then relieved to gather after spilling a cross from the left before making a super stop to keep out a thunderbolt from Walker.
88' BAD MISS BY TORRES
A delicious pass from Juan Mata puts Fernando Torres in down the left, but the former Liverpool man curls his shot inches past the post. Sandro then shoots well wide for the home side.
86' CECH IN THE WAY AGAIN
Lennon brings the ball under control on the edge of the Chelsea box, but not for the first time the shot is too central and easy for Cech.
84' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Daniel Sturridge replaces Oscar for Chelsea.
83' TOO HIGH FROM SIGURDSSON
Jermain Defoe is felled just outside the Chelsea box, but Gylfi Sigurdsson curls his effort over the crossbar.
80' PUSHING FOR A FOURTH
Mata's ball through the centre just fails to find Hazard. Chelsea are certainly not content just to protect their lead here, perhaps because their defence looks vulnerable when Tottenham attack.
76' OSCAR DENIED
Friedel beats away a near-post drive from Oscar. Chelsea are looking good again and it would be no surprise to see them add a fourth. Sigurdsson shoots over at the other end.
75' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Here's the substitution. Emmanuel Adebayor replaces Clint Dempsey, who has been below his best today.
73' CHANGE IN THE OFFING
Emmanuel Adebayor will shortly be coming on for Spurs.
70' SUBSTITUTION
Jake Livermore replaces Tom Huddlestone.
69' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It was a superb goal. Mikel played the ball inside to Hazard, whose first-time pass put Mata clear of his marker and the Spaniard produced another clinical finish.
68' GOAL: SPURS 2 CHELSEA 3
Juan Mata gives Chelsea the lead. Incredible!
67' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Gallas was culpable again defensively. His footwork was all at sea as he attempted to clear a cross from the right and could only get the ball to the edge of the box where Mata side-footed a sumptuous shot into the corner, giving Friedel no chance.
66' GOAL: SPURS 2 CHELSEA 2
Juan Mata levels for Chelsea.
66' TORRES FEELS WRONGED
Fernando Torres sarcastically claps the match officials indicating he feels he is being given a raw deal. The Spain striker has been very ordinary again today.
65' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Petr Cech dives full length to his right to turn aside an ambitious long-range strike from Defoe. Moments later, Torres gets clear but he dithers and Vertonghen makes an excellent saving tackle.
64' CREDIT TO AVB
You have to give Andre Villas-Boas credit. The way Spurs played in the first half it seemed certain they would have to make a personnel switch at the break. They didn't, but whatever the Portuguese said at the interval has certainly done the trick because they look a totally different side.
62' CECH IN ACTION AGAIN
Lennon plays the ball inside to Sandro, but his low shot is too central and easy for Cech to gather.
58' STERN TALKING TO
A flashpoint involving Torres and Sandro sees both players spoken to by referee Mike Dean.
57' PENALTY CLAIMS
Chelsea want a penalty after Ashley Cole collides with William Gallas inside the box. The referee is not interested.
55' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a real poacher's goal. Lennon's mis-hit shot ended up near the penalty spot and the England striker reacted magnificently to bury the ball in the corner, giving Cech no chance.
54' GOAL: SPURS 2 CHELSEA 1
Jermain Defoe puts Spurs in front.
53' CATCHING THE EYE
Vertonghen has impressed every time I have seen him this season. He tries an angled drive from 20 yards that thumps into the midriff of Cech.
52' MORE SPURS PRESSURE
Sigurdsson then cuts in off the right flank and his shot is comfortably held by Cech. Chelsea are rocking.
51' IVANOVIC IN THE WAY
Spurs have their tails up. Ivanovic half-clears a cross from Lennon and then gets in the way of a goalbound shot from Sigurdsson.
49' RECORD IS BROKEN
That is the first time this season that Chelsea have conceded a goal in the second half.
48' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a poor goal to concede from Chelsea's point of view. Huddlestone's free-kick from near the half-way line missed several players inside the penalty box. Vertonghen hooked the ball back from beyond the far post and Gallas helped the ball over the line from close range.
47' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 1 CHELSEA 1
William Gallas levels for Tottenham.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Chelsea get the second half under way. Neither side has made any changes at the break.
45' HT: TOTTENHAM 0 CHELSEA 1
Chelsea are in front at the interval and they deserve their lead after an assured display just like the one at Arsenal a couple of weeks ago. It was no surprise their goal came from a set-piece, but its construction was slightly out of the ordinary, Gary Cahill netting with a cracking right-foot volley from just inside the area after a corner was only half-cleared. Spurs have not caused problems often enough for their manager's liking, but that is not to say they have not had their chances, with William Gallas and Gylfi Sigurdsson both shooting narrowly wide and Jermain Defoe forcing Petr Cech into an unconvincing save. Brad Friedel saved well from Juan Mata at the other end just before half-time.
45' BOOKING APIECE
Kyle Walker is booked for tripping Ramires. Oscar then trips Lennon and is also cautioned.
45' DEFOE THREATENS AGAIN
Defoe cuts back on to his right foot and curls a shot towards the far post. Ashley Cole, stood on the line, heads away, though it looked as though the effort might just have drifted wide.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be three minutes of added time at the end of the half.
44' BRAVE FROM MIKEL
More Spurs pressure. A corner from the left falls at the feet of Dempsey and Mikel bravely gets in the way of the shot. David Luiz is down with a head injury.
43' CECH LOOKING UNCOMFORTABLE
Sigurdsson's dipping cross from the left causes Chelsea all sorts of problems and Cech punches away very unconvincingly. It appeared as though the visitors' goalkeeper was not expecting the ball to reach him. Dempsey then sees a shot blocked.
41' SPURS BOOKINGS
Gallas is booked for a mistimed tackle on Torres, quickly following Huddlestone into the book after a similar misdemeanour.
40' FINE SAVE FRIEDEL
Ramires plays the ball inside to Mata and his shot from the edge of the area forces Friedel into an excellent diving save to his left. Mata skies the rebound into the stands.
36' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Chelsea break quickly following a woeful Spurs corner, but despite having a four-on-three advantage Eden Hazard is unable to find the killer pass.
34' TOM GETS HIS CHANCE
Tom Huddlestone is making his first Spurs start since May last year. Before the match his manager Andre Villas-Boas said: “He's had a big, big injury but he has worked very hard to come back from that and deserves his chance today.”
32' SIGURDSSON GOES CLOSE
Lennon finally does get the ball and delivers a dangerous cross from the right. Cahill's clearing header is unconvincing and Sigurdsson's shot on the turn goes just wide of the left-hand post.
30' CHELSEA IN CHARGE
Spurs are certainly not playing badly, but there is no doubt Chelsea have had the upper hand in the first half hour. They look the slicker outfit and their flair players are seeing much more of the ball than those of the home side. Aaron Lennon has hardly had a kick so far.
27' UNDER THREAT
Spurs are unbeaten in their last 20 Premier League home matches against opponents from the capital since a 3-1 defeat by Arsenal in September 2007. That record is obviously under threat today.
25' CHELSEA BOOKING
Branislav Ivanovic is booked for taking a dive near the right touchline.
24' GYLFI A THREAT
The forward runs of Sigurdsson are causing Chelsea some problems, as it is not clear whether he should be picked up by Mikel, the holding midfielder, or one of the centre-backs. The Icelander was in acres of space a moment ago to receive a pass and would have been in on goal had he been able to bring the ball under control.
21' COLE SAVES CHELSEA
Spurs come close to levelling almost immediately. Cech can only parry a low shot from Defoe from 20 yards right in front of him, but Cole beats Dempsey to the loose ball and clears to rescue his goalkeeper.
19' MORE ON THAT GOAL
An awkward clearing header from Gallas gave Chelsea a corner on the left. The initial delivery was not effectively dealt with, Gallas was again culpable, heading the ball to the centre of the box where Cahill scored his fourth goal for the Blues with a rasping volley. Yes, that's right, a rasping volley.
18' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 0 CHELSEA 1
Gary Cahill gives Chelsea the lead.
17' THE BOY FROM BRAZIL
Oscar is pulling the strings for Chelsea in midfield. He plays a ball centrally through for Ramires, who carries it forward and beats two defenders before being crowded out by a third.
15' JT STILL SKIPPER
Just in case you have been in a nuclear bunker and missed the news overnight and this morning: John Terry is to retain the Chelsea captaincy but has been fined heavily by the club over his abusing of QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.
13' SANDRO'S HAPPY MEMORIES
Sandro obviously has memories of that spectacular goal he scored at Stamford Bridge the year before last. He shoots from 30 yards and the ball ends up high in the stands. Lightning does not strike twice, apparently.
12' OSCAR NOT FAR AWAY
Oscar is not closed down quickly enough and his well-struck shot from just outside the Spurs box is a yard wide of the left-hand upright.
10' HE'S NO BALE
Clint Dempsey will be asked to fill a different role today, tracking up and down the left wing, like Gareth Bale normally does so effectively.
8' HAZARD WARNING
Hazard and Torres play a wonderful one-two on the edge of the Tottenham box, but the final ball into the danger area from the Belgian is disappointing.
6' NO DEMBELE TODAY
Moussa Dembele is out today for Spurs because he damaged a hip playing for Belgium. Without Bale as well it's a big blow to the home side.
4' GALLAS SHOOTS WIDE
Spurs win a free-kick inside the Chelsea half on the left. No one tracks the run of William Gallas, and he swivels and shoots wastefully wide from six yards from the set-piece delivered expertly by Gylfi Sigurdsson.
2' LAMPS MADE TO WAIT
Ramires is making his 100th appearance for Chelsea today, but his inclusion means that Frank Lampard will have to wait for his 500th Premier League start.
1' HERE WE GO
Spurs kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Gareth Bale got a message when he got to the ground to say his partner had gone into labour, so he has departed for a local hospital and will not play for Spurs today. Also missing are Hugo Lloris and and Moussa Dembele. The three players to come in are Brad Friedel, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Tom Huddlestone. Chelsea make two changes, Gary Cahill replacing the suspended John Terry and Ramires coming in for Frank Lampard, who drops to the bench.

0' PREVIEW
He may not be prepared to admit it publicly, but nothing would give Andre Villas-Boas more pleasure than seeing his Spurs side put one over former employers Chelsea at White Hart Lane on Saturday. The Premier League returns to action following a week in mothballs due to the international break and we could hardly have a tastier fixture to kick things off again. London derbies between these sides are rarely dull, but there will be a little added spice with the Portuguese facing for the first time the club who sacked him in March after just nine months at the helm. Villas-Boas also endured a rocky start to life at Tottenham, but he appears to have turned things around and they go into today's match looking for a fifth straight win in the league. There are other sub-plots, too. Spurs fans will also want payback for Chelsea's victory in the Champions League final which meant that their fourth place last year was only worthy of a place in the Europa League. And then there's the controversial FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley in April, a game best remembered for Juan Mata's ‘ghost' goal. The Blues also got lucky in the league game at Stamford Bridge the year before when a goal was again wrongly awarded after a blunder by Heurelho Gomes was followed by a similar howler from a linesman, who deemed that Frank Lampard's shot had crossed the line. Chelsea will be without John Terry, who accepted his punishment for the racist language aimed towards QPR's Anton Ferdinand last season and serves the first of a four-match ban. JT is expected to be watching the game from the stands. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Spurs will be thankful that Jermain Defoe managed a total of just 66 minutes playing time in England's matches with San Marino and Poland and should therefore be fresh and in the mood to add to his team-leading four league goals this season. While Defoe was unimpressive on international duty, the same criticism cannot be levelled at Gareth Bale, who scored twice for Wales and turned in such impressive performances for his country that former club team-mate Luka Modric suggested he come and ply his trade at Real Madrid. Chelsea have netted 15 goals in the league this season, with seven different players finding the target. Though still not entirely convincing, Fernando Torres is their leading scorer with four goals. Frank Lampard has netted three times, as has Branislav Ivanovic, who is top scorer among defenders in the Premier League and always a major threat at set-pieces. The man who has made more goals than any other is also among the Chelsea squad, but despite his five assists, there have been signs in recent weeks that Eden Hazard is having trouble replicating his dazzling early season form and the Belgian could do with a big game in a big game to rid his critics of the notion that he is only a factor against the lesser sides.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 53 wins to 43 by Tottenham and 32 games being drawn. At White Hart Lane, Spurs have 24 wins to 22 by Chelsea, with a further 18 meetings ending up all square. The last time these sides met on this ground was on December 22. Emmanuel Adebayor gave Spurs an eighth-minute lead, but Daniel Sturridge earned Chelsea a point with an equaliser midway through the first half. The return at Stamford Bridge in March finished goalless. The most recent meeting, of course, came in that controversial FA Cup semi-final at Wembley in April which the Blues won 5-1. Chelsea have failed to win at the Lane in their last six visits in the league, losing three times and drawing the other three. Their last victory here came in August 2005.
0' FORM GUIDE
Chelsea kick off the weekend top of the table, four points clear of the two Manchester clubs with 19 points from their opening seven matches. The only blemish to their 100 per cent start to the season came with a goalless draw at Queens Park Rangers. Tottenham are in fifth place, five points behind the leaders. After a shaky start to the season in which they failed to win any of their opening three games, they have won four in a row in the league, including a stunning 3-2 triumph at Old Trafford.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Scott Parker is now not expected to make his first appearance of the season for Spurs until at least Christmas as he continues his recovery from the Achilles injury he suffered playing for England at Euro 2012. Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Younes Kaboul (both knee) are also out, but Jake Livermore and Kyle Naughton are back in training after groin and ankle injuries respectively. Chelsea captain John Terry serves the first of his four-game ban over the Anton Ferdinand affair, but Frank Lampard (calf) and Ryan Bertrand (illness) are both expected to be recovered and available having been forced to miss England's World Cup qualifying matches against San Marino and Poland.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Dean, who has been a FIFA official since 2002. The Cheshire-based referee has shown ten yellow cards in his five Premier League games this season, well below his normal average. He dismissed five players last season, including one from each of these two sides, Chelsea's Fernando Torres in the home game with Swansea at Stamford Bridge in September and Tottenham's Scott Parker in the derby defeat at Arsenal in February. Dean has a reputation for being strict on misdemeanours in the penalty area and awarded more spot kicks last campaign than any other top-flight official. His assistants today are Scott Ledger and John Brooks, while Lee Mason is the fourth official.
