Aston Villa vs. Norwich City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: VILLA 1 NORWICH 1
There is no victory for Paul Lambert over his former club, as Norwich hit back against ten-man Villa to snatch a point through a late goal from Michael Turner. There was little to choose between two ordinary sides before the break, other than the fact that Villa took their chance and Norwich didn't. Wes Hoolahan should have given the visitors the lead, but he was denied by the left boot of Brad Guzan. Soon after, Christian Benteke put the Midlanders in front, profiting from poor defending but then showing wonderful composure to finish expertly. The game turned on the sending off of Villa defender Joe Bennett for a second bookable offence early in the second half. Norwich then dominated the remainder of the match, Guzan making another top-class save to deny Grant Holt, who was clean through, before Turner finally found the net ten minutes from time with a header from a corner. With Sunderland (away) up next, followed by matches against both Manchester clubs and Arsenal, these are worrying times for Villa fans.
90' OFF TARGET AGAIN
Snodgrass lifts a final shot over the bar from eight yards. Villa are going to hang on here.
90' BAD MASS FROM RYAN BENNETT
Norwich have a great chance to win it, but Ryan Bennett snatches at the opportunity and slices over the crossbar from 12 yards.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be four minutes of added time.
86' HERD IS STRUGGLING
Chris Herd is carrying an injury for Villa but the home side have used all three substitutes so he is having to carry on.
84' VILLA HANGING ON
Norwich are launching attack after attack. If you offered Paul Lambert a point right now he would take it.
81' REDEMPTION FOR TURNER
Turner has made amends, because his poor marking contributed to the Villa opener.
80' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a sickener for Villa. They failed to pick up a short corner and Hoolahan crossed for Turner, whose flicked header nestled in the far corner.
79' GOAL: VILLA 1 NORWICH 1
Michael Turner levels for the visitors.
78' GREAT SAVE GUZAN
Grant Holt is clean through, but Brad Guzan stands firm and keeps out the strike at close range, denying the striker his fourth goal in four games
75' VILLA SUBSTITUTION
Andres Weimann replaces Brett Holman for the home side. An Austrian for an Australian.
74' HOLT MOVING GINGERLY
Grant Holt has picked up a knock after Brad Guzan landed on him coming to collect a cross. He is not moving too freely at present, but will soldier on.
72' BACKS AGAINST THE WALL
Norwich are piling on the pressure against the ten men. A corner falls to Snodgrass beyond the far post, but his shot is charged down by Lowton.
71' NORWICH SUBSTITUTION
Norwich make a switch too, Steve Morison replacing Bradley Johnson.
70' VILLA SUBSTITUTION
Darren Bent replaces Christian Benteke, who has been outstanding this afternoon.
69' BRAVE CLEARANCE
Holt heads a cross from the right back into the danger area, but Vlaar makes a brave header to clear with Hoolahan lurking right behind him.
66' HOOLAHAN DENIED
Hoolahan sneaks in down the left after Villa concede possession, but his shot from a narrow angle strikes Guzan in the chest and deflects wide.
65' NORWICH SUBSTITUTION
Chris Hughton makes a tactical switch, with Robert Snodgrass replacing Elliott Bennett.
63' VILLA BOOKING
Chris Herd is shown the yellow card for committing the latest in a string of offences.
62' CLOCKS GO BACK
Don't forget the clocks go back tonight. It's the good time of year when you arrive at Sunday football an hour before everybody else and feel like an idiot. As opposed to the time of year when you arrive at the ground with 30 minutes left and your ten-man side trailing 8-1. Then you have to buy everyone a pint after the match if they are still talking to you.
59' WOEFUL RECENT RECORD
Villa have won three of their 27 league matches this year and collected just 20 points, fewest among Premier League clubs. That equates to 28 points over the course of the season – and that sort of record would see you playing your football in a different season the following campaign. They really need to hang on today.
57' VILLA SUBSTITUTION
Eric Lichaj comes on to play right-back for Villa, with Gabriel Agbonlahor being sacrificed.
54' GUZAN ALMOST CAUGHT OUT
Elliott Bennett's cross from the right is mis-hit and Guzan makes a meal of pawing it away at the far post.
53' VILLA RED CARD
Joe Bennett holds back Elliott Bennett and is shown his second yellow card and a subsequent red. The referee sends off the right Bennett and Villa are down to ten.
51' SHORT OF CLINICAL FINISHERS
Norwich have the worst shots-to-goals conversion rate in the Premier League, a measly seven per cent. Opponents have scored five goals against them from outside the area, only one fewer than Canaries players have managed from anywhere on the pitch.
48' BENTEKE IN THE ACTION AGAIN
Villa are on the attack immediately. Benteke soars above Ryan Bennett to meet a cross from the right, but his headed effort is tame and Ruddy collects.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Villa kick off the second half. Norwich have brought on Ryan Bennett for the injured Russell Martin at the break.
45' HT: VILLA 1 NORWICH 0
Villa lead at the break thanks to an excellent 27th-minute strike from Belgium striker Christian Benteke. Preferred to Darren Bent, the forward repaid the faith shown in him by manager Paul Lambert, collecting a pass in an unmarked position in the centre and guiding a cool finish into the corner. That was a major setback for Norwich, who were enjoying their best period of the game just before falling behind. They also wasted a glorious opening, Grant Holt playing in Wes Hoolahan, but the midfielder being denied at close quarters by the foot of Brad Guzan. It could prove to be a costly miss, though the visitors have looked lively enough to feel they can still turn this match around.
45' TAME HEADER FROM BENTEKE
Benteke rises highest to meet a free-kick delivered from the left, but gets under the ball and Ruddy gathers his tame effort.
42' MARTIN IN THE WARS
Russell Martin is currently down getting treatment for an injury. It's not clear what the problem is.
41' FINE DEFENDING
Hoolahan and Martin combine impressively down the right, but Herd cuts out the cross superbly at full stretch with Grant Holt waiting to pounce.
39' BENTEKE DENIED
The ball finds its way to Benteke again inside the area, but this time he is closed down and the shot is deflected for a corner.
37' SOLID AT THE BACK
Villa have only kept one clean sheet this season and that was in their only victory so far over Swansea. That Hoolahan chance aside, their makeshift backline has performed impressively.
33' GABBY NEEDS A GOAL
Gabriel Agbonlahor is making his 200th Premier League start today. He could do with marking the milestone with a goal, having failed to score in his last 27 league appearances.
30' VILLA BOOKING
Elliott Bennett is felled by a rash challenge from Joe Bennett. The result is a yellow card. Let's hope Mr Dowd booked the correct Bennett.
28' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Who needs Darren Bent? Villa switched the ball out to the left and the Norwich backline was snoozing as Benteke collected the cross in the centre all alone. He finished superbly, giving Ruddy no chance.
27' GOAL: VILLA 1 NORWICH 0
Christian Benteke gives Villa the lead.
26' CANARIES ON TOP
Norwich are growing into this match. Russell Martin wastes a good crossing position from the left, but it was apparent how many yellow shirts were streaming into the box from midfield hoping for a better delivery. El Ahmadi shoots wide at the other end.
23' WHAT A CHANCE. WHAT A SAVE
Holt brings the ball down expertly and slips a ball through to Hoolahan. The Norwich midfielder looks odds on to score, but Guzan denies him with a foot. That was a gilt-edged chance.
21' GET WELL SOON, STAN
The Villa fans are on their feet again as we approach the 19th minute, applauding No.19 Stiliyan Petrov, who is currently recovering from leukaemia. Football supporters get some stick, but that's class.
19' PENALTY CLAIMS
Elliott Bennett wants a penalty after being barged in the back by Ron Vlaar. Referee Dowd waves away the protests. You don't get those if you are a small club playing away from home. But it should have been a spot-kick.
17' LAX IN POSSESSION
Villa are trying to string the passes together, but all too often their efforts are breaking down before they get the ball into the danger area.
15' OPEN THE PURSESTRINGS
It seems strange to me that this Villa line-up is devoid of any big name talent, especially with chairman Randy Lerner loaded having recently sold the Cleveland Browns NFL franchise for a reported $1billion (£620million).
11' ON A BIT OF A BAD RUN
Since beating Norwich last season, Villa have only won two of their last 16 home matches, drawing six and losing eight. In fact, if Villa do not win today, this will be their worst start to a season for 43 years. They drew two and lost seven of their first nine games in the old Second Division in 1969.
9' TAME EFFORT FROM HOLMAN
A Norwich move breaks down and Villa break quickly. The ball finds its way through to Holman, who has an excellent shooting opportunity on the edge of the area. The Australian scuffs his effort and Ruddy saves easily.
7' WELL OVER FROM BENTEKE
Villa win the first corner of the match, but Benteke heads harmlessly over the crossbar.
6' SLOW STARTERS
Villa's start to the season is their worst since 1986-87 and fans will not want reminding that campaign saw them relegated, finishing bottom.
4' HOW THEY LINE UP
It looks like we got it slightly wrong in our preview. Chris Herd is playing in central defence for Villa and Matthew Lowton occupying his more familiar right-back role.
2' SHOT CHARGED DOWN
Villa foolishly try to play intricate passing moves inside their own box and give the ball away. Bradley Johnson's shot is charged down.
1' HERE WE GO
Norwich get the game under way, attacking the goal to our left.

0' TEAM NEWS
Aston Villa make three changes to the side beaten at Fulham, with the biggest being Darren Bent's omission. His place goes to Christian Benteke. Nathan Baker has failed a fitness test, so Matthew Lowton will play at centre-back and Chris Herd comes in to play on the right side of defence. Marc Albrighton replaces Stephen Ireland in midfield. Norwich manager Chris Hughton names the same starting XI that saw off Arsenal last weekend.
0' PREVIEW
There is more than a much-needed three points on the line when Aston Villa host fellow strugglers Norwich in the Premier League's early kick-off on Saturday. The match will be the first time Villa manager Paul Lambert has faced the Canaries since walking out on them to join the Midlanders in the summer. While his departure certainly left some ill-feeling, there is little doubt Norwich also owe a debt of gratitude to the Scot, who guided them out of League One and into the top flight with back-to-back promotions. His success, however, made him a sought-after commodity and one which the Norfolk club were loathe to lose. Chairman Alan Bowkett revealed at a fans' forum a fortnight ago that Lambert is suing the club for breach of contract, and it has since emerged from the manager that Norwich have launched a counter-claim action against him, although he was far from happy it had been made public. The matter will be decided by a Premier League manager's tribunal in due course, but in the meantime both Lambert and Bowkett will be hoping their respective sides do the talking on the pitch and secure what would be a moral victory, but more importantly a crucial result in what is likely to be a season-long battle for survival for both these clubs. Certainly Norwich had looked like relegation fodder for much of the early part of the season, but all that changed last week with that shock home victory over Arsenal. It was the previously leaky Canaries defence that impressed most, keeping the normally fluent Gunners to a handful of half-chances and recording a rare clean sheet. Villa need to dent that new-found confidence today. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Villa's Darren Bent may have his critics for lack of an all-round attacking game, but there is no doubting his pedigree in front of goal. The England striker has netted 148 goals in 304 starts for Ipswich, Charlton, Sunderland, Tottenham and his current club. Bent still has a bit to do to win over his new manager, who has dropped him to the bench on two occasions this season, but in reality if Villa are to eke out enough points to guarantee their top-flight status Bent needs to be in the starting line-up and scoring goals. If he put in the amount of effort Grant Holt does, then there wouldn't be a problem. But the work-rate of few forward players matches that of the Norwich man. Lambert, of course, is a big admirer of the centre-forward, who was widely expected to follow his manager to the Midlands in the summer and expressed on Twitter his desire to leave Carrow Road. Holt is the league's in-form striker, scoring in each of his last three fixtures. Don't be surprised if he is plying his trade permanently on this ground come January.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Villa have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 20 wins to 16 by Norwich and 14 games being drawn. At Villa Park, the home side have 16 wins to three by Norwich, with a further six meetings ending up all square. The last time these sides met was on May 13, the final day of last season, at Carrow Road. Norwich ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Grant Holt (9 mins) and Simeon Jackson (22). Villa came out on top in the corresponding fixture last year, coming back to win 3-2 despite the visitors taking the lead through Anthony Pilkington (25). Goals from Darren Bent (30, 62) and Gabriel Agbonlahor (48) secured the points, with Steve Morison's strike 13 minutes from time proving to be nothing more than a consolation. Norwich have won just once in their last nine trips to Villa Park and that came in November 1992, the inaugural season of the Premier League, or Premiership as it was known in those bygone days.
0' FORM GUIDE
Aston Villa start the weekend just one place above the relegation zone in 17th, with five points from eight games. They have won just one match in the league this season, a 2-0 home victory over Swansea on Sep.15 and are without a win in four, having lost at Tottenham and Fulham in their last two matches without finding the net in either. Goalscoring has been a problem for Villa who, along with today's visitors and Sunderland, have netted the fewest goals in the division. Norwich's win over Arsenal last week, their first of 2012-13 in the league, doubled their points tally for the season and lifted them out of the drop-zone and into 15th place. Only Southampton have conceded more goals than the Canaries this season away from home and the Suffolk side have not kept a clean sheet on their travels since returning to the top flight. They have also only recorded one way in their last ten away from home, a 2-1 triumph at Tottenham on Apr.9.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Aston Villa face the possibility of being without three of their centre-backs. Richard Dunne is definitely out with a groin injury and Nathan Baker (ankle) and Ciaran Clark (knee) are doubtful. That could mean Matt Lowton switches from right-back and Eric Lichaj gets the nod on the right side of defence. Norwich manager Chris Hughton must decide whether to recall Robert Snodgraass, who is now fully fit after being limited to a substitute appearance last week following an ankle problem. Defender Steven Whittaker is still out with an ankle injury and on-loan striker Harry Kane has a broken metatarsal.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Phil Dowd, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2001. The man from Stoke-on-Trent showed 105 yellow cards in 28 games last season, the second most among Premier League officials and Dowd had a higher yellow cards per game ratio (3.79) than anyone else. He also dismissed three players and awarded more fouls than any other referee. Dowd has cautioned 13 players in four top-flight matches this season and got an early red card under his belt on the opening day of the season with the second-half dismissal of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger at West Brom. He had an eventful outing last weekend, brandishing 10 yellow cards and one red in the Championship match between Crystal Palace and Millwall at Selhurst Park. Dowd's assistants today are Andy Garratt and Andy Halliday, while Michael Oliver is the fourth official.
