90' BORE DRAW
If the game plan was to stop the other side scoring, then both teams have certainly done that well. Two sides that have struggled for goals and victories have cancelled each other out for their first scoreless draw since the Seventies. The passing and the forward support was slow in a match that was desperately crying out for a bit of attacking composure. A lot of huffing and puffing, but no houses fell over. In fact today's attackers would have trouble blowing over Cristiano Ronaldo in the penalty box. Stoke came to life at the death, but it was too little too late and Mignolet had an answer to everything they had to throw at him. Points shared.

Stoke have finally come to life in the last few minutes. Peppering the Sunderland box with shots and crosses. Why they did not do this earlier I do not understand.

Simon Mignolet does really well again. Etherington slips Crouch in one-on-one with the keeper, but he manages to get his hand on the ball just before Crouch and out to safety.

Etherington's corner is an outswinger that finds an unmarked Robert Huth, but the big German's header is well save by Mignolet.

That sub seems to have invigorated Stoke. The ball switches flanks as both Etherington and Kightly cause problems. The latter dances round a couple of challenges in the box, but cannot find room for a shot.

One former Liverpool player replaces another. Michael Owen comes on to replace Charlie Adam. Adam doesn't seem to impressed with that.

A big moment in the match. Stephane Sessegnon robs Wilkinson and squares to an unmarked Fletcher. His shot is blocked by Huth, but that seemed to come off his arm. No penalty.

It's Colback's turn to have a nibble at Adam. The former Liverpool man curls it towards goal, but Sunderland hack it clear.

Rose seems to have become the pantomime villain for the Stoke fans. Is that because he falling over when he is fouled?

The games starts to heat up a bit, as a few rough challenges start to fly in. Adam goes in high and late on Rose, but the ref deems it only worthy of a free kick.

Apparantly Marc Wilson is off to hospital with a suspected broken fibula.

Crouch puts in a tackle from behind on Johnson. The ref thinks about it for a while and then books the Stoke man.

Martin O'Neill decides to get a bit more involved in the game. Jonathan Walters wanted to take a quick throw, but O'Neill would not let him have the ball. The ref has a little word with the Sunderland manager, whose face was a picture of innocence. He knew what he was doing!

Rose gets another one in the face, this time from Walters. Again there doesn't appear to be much intent.
61' SUBSTITUTINO FOR SUNDERLAND
Martin O'Neill decides not to take any risks, and brings Stephane Sessegnon on to replace Sebastian Larsson.

Johnson finds Colback in a couple of yards of space in the Stoke box, but the youngster's touch deserts him, and the ball dribbles away. Johnson appeals for a penalty, but I think it was more in hope than anything.

Larsson returns to the pitch following treatment.

In one of the most promising moves on the game, Johnson finds himself in space on the right, and cuts inside on his favoured left foot to hit a rocket towards Begovic's goal. Not close, but better intent.

A tad cynical there from Dean Whitehead. Seb Larsson was breaking quickly down the right, and the labouring Whitehead realised he could not keep up, so just sort of kicked him. Physio on for Larsson and a yellow for Whitehead.

Andy Wilkinson on for Marc Wilson. Fingers crossed this is not too bad.
49' INJURY
Marc Wilson goes in for a fairly innocous challenege with Steven Fletcher, but comes off much worse. Fletcher looks concerned, he knows this could be bad. On replay Wilson looks to have twisted awkwardly and I doubt he will continue. The stretcher is on. A big round of applause for the Stoke man.

A goalkeeper makes a save! Adam and Cameron take a short corner, Adam whips a ball into the box, but his cross is too close to Mignolet, who gathers. A save - sort of!

Sunderland kick off the second half.
45' A QUIET HALF FOR THE KEEPERS
A nothing first half really - some half-chances for both sides, but nothing really startling. The game is crying out for a bit more quality in the final third, as well as some more support for the lone strikers. Both teams are working very hard and making themselves very difficult to beat, but it has been a scrappy affair, with neither side able to wrestle control of the ball for a prolonged period, and neither keeper having a real save to make. The onus is probably on the home side to go and look for the win, so let's hope for a slightly more open second half.

One team take possession for a while, goes nowhere far, and then gives the ball away to the other side to do the same.

Adam takes a corner, but it doesn't beat the first man. Disappointing.

Danny Rose takes an elbow in the face from Peter Crouch. Crouch's arms may resemble chipsticks, but looks that like it hurt. No intent from the big man.

Cuellar has been in the thick of it for the last few minutes. He shows good pace to beat Kightly in a sprint to the ball. That would have been dangerous for Sunderland if he had not made it.

Stoke's pitch is 2 metres wider either side this season, to comply with Premier League rules. Exciting!
31' BETTER
Half chances at either end. Cuellar releases McClean down the right, but Stoke are able to deal with his dangerous cross. At the other end, Kightly tries to curl one into the far post only for Cuellar to clear off the line.

A series of throw-ins down the left before the ball finally arrives in the box at the feet of Steven Fletcher. The Scot holds it up well, and lays it off to Colback, who hits it hopelessly wide.
23' SUNDERLAND UNHAPPY
Sebastian Larsson gets a chance at the other end from a free kick. But he hits it at the wall. Sunderland are complaining that the wall had moved to close. They look to have a point, but no interest from the ref.
22' RECOVERY
The resulting free-kick breaks to Shawcross on the edge of the box, and he looks to smash it goalwards, only for Rose to make a superb late block challenge. That goes some way to make ammends.
22' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
A bit of a stupid challenge there from Danny Rose. Geoff Cameron finds himself in the right-wing position and going nowhere, before Rose decides to dive in a give away the foul. Yellow Card.
18' NO SUPPORT
That is not a good sign for Sunderland; Craig Gardner breaks from right-back, and drives towards the penalty box, he looks up for support and there is no-one even slightly near him. Bit of positivity lads?
16' BRIGHTLY KIGHTLY
Michael Kightly is having a good start to his Stoke career, keeping Matthew Etherington out of the starting line-up. It is good to see from a player that has been hampered by some terrible injuries.
14' CLOSER
Finally a good passing move with a little purpose. Sunderland play some neat stuff down the left flank to release Kightly in behind Gardner, but his cross is too high, even for Crouch.
10' QUIET OPENING
A relatively quiet start to the game here. Both sides yet to create anything too clear-cut, and fairly even possession, with little space. Could this game come down to set pieces?

Stoke win the first corner of the day, which is swung in beautifully to the near post, only for Sunderland to clear at the second time of asking.

Both of these sides have had a solid, if unspectacular start to the campaign, with Stoke losing to the current top two (Chelsea, Man Utd) and Sunderland losing only to the defending champions (Man City).

Stoke welcome Sunderland this afternoon to end a five game period that has seen his side face both Manchester sides, Chelsea and Liverpool and secure their first win of the season against Swansea. As well as the red and white stripes they both wear, both sides share similar mid-table expectations and eight league points apiece – so you could be forgiven for predicting a draw. The Brittania Stadium however was a happy hunting ground for Sunderland last season, a 60th minute James McClean goal, the difference.

Stoke could welcome back midfielder Glenn Whelan, who returned to training on Thursday after recovering from a hamstring problem. Peter Crouch is expected to lead the line as a lone stirker, in a squad that has no real injury worries.

Lee Cattermole is expected to return from a three match suspension, and Phil Bardsley is in line for a return from injury after making the bench against Newcastle last time out. Wes Brown will still be watching from the sidelines, and Titus Bramble is struggling with a hip injury.

Stephen Fletcher has been involved in every goal Sunderland have scored this season, while Stoke's beanpole forward Peter Crouch has begun the season in decent form. At the back of O'Neil's mind must be the niggling worry of where the goals will come from if Fletcher has an off patch. Pulis, on the other hand, needs one of his strikers to step up and keep the goal scoring exploits going all season.

Stoke are unbeaten at home this season, conceding only one goal in three games, and as Newcastle's Demba Ba is Sunderland's second top goalscorer in the league this season following his own goal last Sunday a clean sheet for the home side looks a certainty.

Both sides have drawn five league games this season, but the last goalless draw between the sides was 35 years ago in a Division Two game. Interestingly Sunderland's last away win in the Premier League was this fixture last season, and Stoke are unbeaten in the league at the Britannia since that very same game.

Mark Halsey will take control of the match at a sold out Britannia Stadium, in his fourth game of the season. So far he has dished out three yellows and two reds at an average of 2.33 cards a game.
