Chelsea vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' CHELSEA 2, MANCHESTER UNITED 3.
A fantastic Chelsea comeback was tainted by a double sending off, followed by a Javier Hernandez winner for the visitors. Chelsea started the half well and equalised through Ramires. They looked the better side until Branislav Ivanovic was red-carded for preventing a goal-scoring opportunity. Fernando Torres was then sent off for a second bookable offence (of which neither was bookable). Manchester United scored a winner when an offside Javier Hernandez finished Rafael's cross. Three points for United but plenty of controversy too.
90' FULL TIME
The full time whistle is greeted by an echo of boos around Stamford Bridge.
90' VALENCIA CHANCE
Antonio Valencia is through on goal but he can't find the target and the Chelsea fans momentarily forget their troubles to hurl abuse at Valencia's woeful effort.
90' UNBELIEVABLE REFEREEING
John Obi Mikel should have received a second yellow for a blatant foul on Antonio Valencia. However, Valencia is booked for diving. This is certainly a day to forget for the hopeless officials.
90' ADDED TIME
Robin van Persie has received some minor treatment and therefore Manchester United have five extra minutes to survive. Can nine-men Chelsea salvage something?
88' CHELSEA FANS HAVEN'T REACTED WELL
One of the stewards is being treated as something has been thrown at him and the home fans are chanting "You're not fit to referee". These officials aren't the most popular people in London today.
85' OFFSIDE
Mark Clattenburg and co aren't having a great day as Robin an Persie is adjudged to be offside despite not being near the ball. At least it hasn't gone against the home side again.
82' SUBSTITUTION
Daniel Sturridge is going to make an entrance now. Eden Hazard comes off for the Blues.
80' FIRST WIN IN TEN YEARS?
Manchester United haven't won at Stamford Bridge since 2002, but thanks to a series of terrible decisions from the ref, the Reds could do just that this afternoon.
78' YELLOW CARD
John Obi Mikel is booked for dissent. Surely they can't lose another player!
75' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Robin van Persie originally looked like scoring but Petr Cech managed to just about stop it from going in - it came out to Rafael and he crossed it in for JAVIER HERNANDEZ, who finished it. More controversy though, as Javier Hernandez actually came from an offside position - harsh is an understatement for Roberto Di Matteo and his team.
75' GOOOAAALLL
Javier Hernandez scores for Manchester United!
73' CAN UNITED GO ON TO WIN?
Surely Sir Alex Ferguson will feel that his side can go on to win this. That second red was extremely harsh as it was actually a very poor tackle from Evans, not a dive from Torres. Nevertheless United have a two-man advantage. Ryan Giggs has come on for Wayne Rooney, who was close to getting sent off himself.
71' ROONEY FOUL
Wayne Rooney, who is already booked, brings Ashley Cole and the crowd call for a second yellow. There's no way that he could be booked for that and this time Mark Clattenburg makes the right decision and it's only a foul. Ryan Bertrand has come on for Juan Mata.
68' ANOTHER RED CARD!
Chelsea are down to nine men! It's crazy as Jonny Evans brings Fernando Torres down - he must have been booked for diving and that's Torres' second yellow. To make matters worse that was going to be the Spaniard's last kick with Daniel Sturridge ready to come on at the next opportunity.
67' AZPILICUETA AT RIGHT-BACK
Cesar Azpilicueta has darted forward within seconds of coming on. It's dangerous when United have so many attacking players on the pitch.
64' SUBSTITUTION
With Chelsea down to 10 men, Manchester United make an attacking change with Javier Hernandez coming on for Tom Cleverley, who has been less than impressive today. Cesar Azpilicueta comes on for the Blues; Oscar departs.
63' FREE KICK
Wayne Rooney takes the resulting free kick and his right-footed attempt goes just over the crossbar.
62' RED CARD!
Robin Van Persie is through and last man Branislav Ivanovic brings him down - the referee has no choice but to send him off.
60' GOOD CROSS
Manchester United are playing more positively now and Ashley Young gets a good cross in. Petr Cech is alert and beats Robin van Persie to the ball.
58' MIX-UP UP FRONT
Manchester United put together their first attack of the half but the attacking duo of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are on different wavelengths and the Dutchman's pass is nowhere near Rooney.
54' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's poor defending from United as they fail to clear an originally tame attack from Chelsea. Oscar manages to get a cross in and RAMIRES heads home. Minutes later Chelsea almost take the lead twice! Both chances fall to Eden Hazard - his first effort is spectacularly saved by De Gea and the second is screwed over.
53' GOOOAAALLL
Ramires equalises for the home side!
52' MATA SHOT
Chelsea enjoy some quick passing in and around the penalty area and Juan Mata gets some space - unfortunately it's on his weaker right foot and the shot is very easy for David de Gea.
50' GOOD PLAY FROM OSCAR
The ever-energetic Oscar makes a great run through midfield before finding Fernando Torres, but the striker is quickly crowded out by the United defenders.
48' CHELSEA CORNER
Chelsea have a corner of their own and it goes all the way to Juan Mata but his left-footed effort is blocked by Michael Carrick.
46' EARLY CORNER
Robin van Persie's early corner is cleared by Fernando Torres but Chelsea fail to capitalise on the countering opportunity.
46' KICK OFF
The second half has begun with neither side making any changes at half time.
45' FIRST HALF SUMMARY
Well, it's a half of two halves as Manchester United completely dominated for the first half an hour. They were rewarded by two early goals - the first was rather fortunate as the ball rebounded off David Luiz past Petr Cech. Robin van Persie scored the second with a placed shot following Antonio Valencia's cross. The final 15 minutes was all Chelsea but David de Gea has been in top form, keeping out a number of great shots. He couldn't save Juan Mata's free kick though, and with only one goal in it, it's all to play for.
45' LAST CORNER
David Luiz tries to liven the fans up as Chelsea earn a late corner but Manchester United survive it. It's half time at Stamford Bridge.
45' YELLOW CARD
Fernando Torres has been yellow-carded.
44' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Wayne Rooney was booked for a challenge from behind on JUAN MATA. The Spaniard takes the free kick himself and it's an absolute beauty. He side-foots it into the top-left corner. Great strike. Moments later he has another left-footed shot but David de Gea makes another good save.
44' GOOOAAALLL
Juan Mata scores for Chelsea!
42' TORRES CHANCES
Somehow Manchester United keep it out! Fernando Torres first heads it too close to David de Gea but he gets another chance. Once again De Gea is equal to it - what a save!
40' GREAT SPELL
Chelsea are having their best spell of the game so far but they need to make it count. Manchester United are getting a little careless as Michael Carrick gives the ball away - John Obi Mikel ponders on the ball too long and the chance is gone.
39' FREE KICK
David Luiz's free kick is this time unimpressive. He tries to cross it in but Manchester United deal with it easily.
37' BETTER FROM CHELSEA
Those close shaves seem to have motivated Chelsea as Oscar makes a great run but can't quite find Fernando Torres. Chelsea now have a free kick right on the edge of the area following a foul from Antonio Valencia.
35' POST!
Tom Cleverley is once again the subject of Sir Alex Ferguson's fury. His mistake lets John Obi Mikel put a ball in and Jonny Evans almost puts it into his own net but the post saves him! The resulting corner is headed down by Gary Cahill but David de Gea makes a great save.
34' CHELSEA NEED TO CHANGE SOMETHING
Sir Alex Ferguson is definitely winning this tactical war so far - Chelsea can't cope with United's wide movements and Roberto Di Matteo already has three players warming up in the 35th minute.
31' NON-STOP FROM UNITED
All the threat is coming from the visitors as they move they ball around the area very dangerously. Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are making the difference as Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole look very susceptible to their pace. A great spell of possession comes to an end as Robin van Persie is caught offside.
29' GREAT TEAM WORK
Manchester United are looking completely solid at the moment, and it's all thanks to their organisation and team work. Rio Ferdinand slips but Wayne Rooney tracks back to clear the danger.
27' TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED
Sure, United have a two-goal advantage and they are still looking the more dangerous side, but remember last year? Chelsea had a three-goal advantage and managed to squander it. Sir Alex Ferguson is well aware things can change and continues to motivate his players from the sidelines. Evra's cross is crucially intercepted by Gary Cahill.
24' GREAT FREE KICK
Michael Carrick concedes a free kick and David Luiz steps up to make amends. His shot dips and swerves all over the place but David de Gea just about keeps it out with his feet.
23' MISTAKE FROM LUIZ
Almost the same scene from minutes ago is replicated at the other end. David Luiz gives it away but Rafael overhits his cross and it's a Chelsea goal-kick.
20' CHANCE WASTED
Tom Cleverley is caught in possession but Branislav Ivanovic wastes the chance as he overhits the cross and it goes out for a throw in. Cleverley is getting a stern telling off from both his manager and a fired-up Wayne Rooney.
18' UNITED AREN'T DONE YET
Manchester United are sitting back a little but when they win they ball back they counter very quickly. They win a corner this time but it comes to nothing.
15' GOOD WORK RATE
The whole Manchester United team are working so hard, and Chelsea don't have any time on the ball. Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia are running up and down the pitch constantly. The only worry is how long they can keep this up.
13' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Ashley Cole is caught out of position and Antonio Valencia makes the most of it - his cross just evades David Luiz and ROBIN VAN PERSIE, unmarked on the penalty spot, slides it in to make it 2-0 within 13 minutes.
12' GOOOAAALLL
Robin van Persie doubles Manchester United's lead!
11' CHELSEA ATTACK
A nice counter-attack for Chelsea gives Fernando Torres space on the left but Oscar struggles to control the Spaniard's cross and the Manchester United defence clear.
9' STRANGE FORMATION
Wayne Rooney is playing very deep, even for him and Ashley Young has been seen right at the front of the United attack a few times. It's somewhat unorthodox for Manchester United but it seems to have confused the Chelsea defence early on.
7' VERY UNLUCKY FOR CHELSEA
It was a very unfortunate goal to concede as Robin van Persie's shot hit the post, and rebounded onto David Luiz's hip past Petr Cech. It will go down as an own-goal.
4' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's exactly the start Manchester United needed! Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie link up well - the Dutchman strikes it towards goal, it actually comes off DAVID LUIZ to give Manchester United the lead.
4' GOOOAAALLL
Robin Van Persie scores for Manchester United!
2' EARLY HALF-CHANCES
A David Luiz long ball affords Juan Mata a half-chance, but Rio Ferdinand quells the danger. At the other end Robin van Persie's shot goes straight into the arms of Petr Cech.
1' KICK OFF
Chelsea get the game underway.
0' HANDSHAKE
Good to see that after all the hype, all handshakes take place.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED LINE-UP
Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra return to strengthen the defence, while Ashley Young starts for the first time in the Premier League since he was injured at Fulham. Sir Alex Ferguson has plenty of firepower and creativity on the bench but he has no defensive replacements ready to deploy.
0' CHELSEA LINE-UP
Chelsea made the two neccessary changes but actually line up in the same way that they did against Spurs. Eden Hazard starts with Frank Lampard out injured, while Gary Cahill partners David Luiz at the back with John Terry suspended. Marko Marin is back to fitness and is among the substitutes.

0' THE REF
Mark Clattenburg is in charge today. The select-group referee, who most notably officiated the Olympic men's final a few months back, has been in charge of five games so far this season. He has already dished out 24 yellows and reds to Samba Diakite and James Milner. Clattenburg has been amidst controversy when United have met London clubs before; in 2005 he disallowed Pedro Mendes' effort which was fumbled over the line by Roy Carroll. Two years ago Nani scored against Spurs when the Tottenham keeper believed he had a free kick and the Portuguese winger tapped it in. I'm sure there'll be some decisions to be made in this competitive encounter.
0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
Chelsea are without influential players John Terry and Frank Lampard; the former is suspended while the latter is out for two weeks with a calf injury. The home side should be otherwise unchanged with other regular players injury-free.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS
United's defensive crisis may soon be lifted with Chris Smalling returning to training this week. They are still without Nemanja Vidic and Phil Jones though, but Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra are ready to start after being rested against Braga. Shinji Kagawa is out for four weeks with a knee injury, and he is joined on the sidelines by Anders Lindergaard. They are not short of attackers though, Ashley Young adds to the attacking threat as he is available after a spell of injury.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
These two sides have met 40 times in the top flight during the Premier League era; Chelsea just edge the stats with 13 wins, compared to United's 12. 15 ties have ended as a draw. However, these two sides' most significant battle was in the Champions League final - after 120 minutes of slogging it out inside the Luzhniki Stadium, United outscored the Blues in a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout. Chelsea have forgotten all about that with their outstanding first Champions League win last season. Last time out United typically came back from three goals down to snatch a point at Stamford Bridge.
0' ATTACKING FORCES
If you look at the goals scored column you will see that these two sides are right at the top – Manchester United with 21 goals and Chelsea joint-second with 19 goals. A goal could come from anywhere in this tie – United's 21 Premier League goals have come from 13 different players, while Chelsea have eight different scorers themselves. Robin van Persie is the league's joint-top scorer with six and Fernando Torres isn't far behind with four goals to his name.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
What a day of football today – the Merseyside derby at 13.30 BST and then all eyes will turn to Stamford Bridge as the Premier League's top two battle it out. After last year's European success, Roberto Di Matteo has shown that it was no fluke, as he continues to work wonders, with the Blues on seven wins out of eight, wiping aside their two London rivals in the process. Manchester United are four points adrift of leaders Chelsea and have had to grind out victories so far, falling behind in six of their eight opening Premier League fixtures. Although they have earned their title of comeback kings this season, Chelsea will be made of sterner stuff and Sir Alex Ferguson will have reinforced the importance of a good start today.
