Everton vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' FT: EVERTON 2 LIVERPOOl 2
Everton go back into fourth after coming from two goals down to earn a point from a thrilling 219th Merseyside derby. Liverpool came into this match looking for their first back-to-back league victories of 2012 and the visitors could hardly believe their luck when they roared into a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes without having really dominated the match. Luis Suarez, fired up by remarks made by Everton manager David Moyes in the build-up to this game, made the first and created the second, first seeing a powerful shot hit the leg of Leighton Baines and divert in at the near post, before scoring himself with a well-placed header from a Steven Gerrard free-kick. Full of confidence after their impressive start to the season, Everton never blinked and were level within 15 minutes. Leon Osman pulled one back with a crisp shot from the edge of the area following an unconvincing attempt to punch clear by Reds goalkeeper Brad Jones before the home side equalised ten minutes before the break through Steven Naismith, who scored from close-in after Jose Enrique had neglected his defensive duties. It was no surprise that the second half failed to live up to the excitement of the first. Both sides still had their chances, with the best falling to Suarez. The Uruguayan saw a goalbound shot blocked by Jagielka with Tim Howard beaten and then had a goal in stoppage time wrongly disallowed for offside.
90' SUAREZ SO UNLUCKY
The replays show Suarez was onside - Liverpool have been robbed! That's full-time.
90' GOAL DISALLOWED
Moments having said that, Suarez puts the ball in the net and claims the winner, only to see the flag up for offside.
90' HAPPY WITH A POINT
Both sides seem happy to settle for a point here. Famous last words - I can't see a winner coming.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be four minutes of added time.
87' EVERTON BOOKING
Seamus Coleman is booked for tugging back Raheem Sterling.
86' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Steven Naismith is replaced by Bryan Oviedo.
85' REDS COMING ON STRONG
Liverpool almost snatch what would surely by the winner after Magaye Gueye is caught in possession, but Steven Gerrard's goalbound shot is kept out by a desperate saving block from Phil Jagielka. Baines then denies Suarez in similar fashion.
82' SHOT CHARGED DOWN
Everton are pressing, looking for a winner, and Baines sees an angled drive charged down by Skrtel.
80' FELLAINI A LUCKY LAD
Steven Gerrard protests at Mr Marriner for the treatment dished out for Sterling by Fellaini. He's quite right, too, how that's not a yellow card is beyond me after what has gone before. Fellaini then kicks out at Allen after winning a free-kick and is lucky the referee turns a blind eye.
78' AMBITIOUS FROM SHELVEY
Jonjo Shelvey is annoyed with himself after trying an ambitious shot from 25 yards, which he pulls wide, rather than picking out the better-placed Raheem Sterling.
75' HENDERSON ALMOST GETS LUCKY
A mis-hit cross from Jordan Henderson almost finds its way into the net, but Tim Howard is alert to the danger and tips over his own bar.
72' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Luis Suarez is booked for a needless late tackle on Sylvain Distin. That looked really nasty when slowed down on the replay, raking has studs down the Achilles of the Frenchman.
71' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Andre Wisdom is replaced by Jordan Henderson, making the 150th appearance of his club career.
70' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Daniel Agger is booked for deliberate handball. He's unlucky, because he only handled because he was clearly barged moments earlier by Marouane Fellaini.
68' JELAVIC MISSED AGAIN
Another Everton free-kick, another chance. Baines picks out Jelavic again and although the Croatian gets his forehead to this one, he directs it a yard or so wide of the post.
66' WIDE FROM JELAVIC
Liverpool simply have to stop conceding free-kicks in wide positions if they are to take something from this game. Another fine delivery from Baines picks out Jelavic, be he cannot get over the ball and heads wide.
64' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who were the ten players to be sent off Merseyside derbies at Goodison in the Premier League era. They are: Phil Neville (twice), Jack Rodwell, Tim Cahill, Tony Hibbert, Mikel Arteta, David Weir, Gary Naysmith and David Unsworth for Everton and Igor Biscan and Robbie Fowler for Liverpool. Score one point for each correct answer - eight points or better and you can call yourself a true fan.
62' SKRTEL EARNS HIS CORN
A magnificent one-two between Coleman and Fellaini gets the defender in down the Everton right. His low pass is aimed for Jelavic, but Skrtel makes a wonderful saving challenge.
60' JUST WIDE FROM FELLAINI
Naismith stands up an inviting cross to the far post. Fellaini rises above Coates, but glances his header wide.
59' EVERTON BOOKING
Phil Jagielka is booked for hauling back Raheem Sterling. If the ball had been nearer the Liverpool man it might have been deemed a goalscoring opportunity and would have been a red card. Gerrard strikes the free-kick well, but Howard is right behind it.
57' SUAREZ ON A MISSION
Luis Suarez shows great skill to skin Phil Jagielka down the Liverpool right. The Uruguayan is short of options in the centre, though, and his cross is cleared.
54' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
Ten players have been sent off playing in Merseyside derbies at Goodison in the Premier League era, one of them twice. Can you name all ten (eight from Everton, two from Liverpool). Answer in a few minutes.
52' PENALTY CLAIMS
The action swings back down the other end. Jones makes a routine save to deny Jelavic and Everton want a penalty for a foul by Skrtel on Baines. Mr Marriner says no.
50' WHAT A MISS FROM STERLING
A magnificent pass from Enrique catches out the Everton backline, Sterling simply must score, but fluffs his shot with only the goalkeeper to beat and gets a right earful from his team-mate, Suarez.
49' LOW MARKS FOR DEFENDING
Having seen the replays of all four goals at the break, a pair of normally sound defenders can hang their heads in shame. Phil Jagielka was outstanding at Loftus Road last weekend, but he definitely left Luis Suarez for the second Liverpool goal and Jose Enrique was snoozing when Steven Naismith sneaked in to net the Everton equaliser.
48' BLOW FOR EVERTON
That Mirallas injury is a real blow for Everton. The Belgian was the best player on show in the first 45 minutes in my book.
47' CHANGES APLENTY
Liverpool have made two changes at the break, with Jonjo Shelvey replacing Suso and Sebastian Coates taking the place of Nuri Sahin. Magaye Gueye has replaced the injured Kevin Mirallas for Everton.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Liverpool get the second half under way.
45' HT: EVERTON 2 LIVERPOOL 2
It's all square at the break in a breathless, pulsating Merseyside derby. The visitors opened up a two-goal cushion inside 20 minutes, with Luis Suarez prominent in both their goals. The Uruguayan saw a fierce low drive find the target via a deflection off the helpless Leighton Baines for the opener on 14 minutes, before finding the net himself with an excellent flicked header from a Steven Gerrard free-kick. Everton produced an immediate response and pulled one back through a well-struck snap-shot from Leon Osman after the visitors had failed to clear a right-wing corner. The home side continued to press and were rewarded with an equaliser ten minutes before the interval when Steven Naismith netted from close range after good work from Kevin Mirallas and Marouane Fellaini.
45' OVER FROM GERRARD
Liverpool have the last chance of the half, but Gerrard shoots over from long range. The visitors will be glad to hear the half-time whistle.
45' EVERTON BOOKING
Phil Neville is booked for diving, trying to win a free-kick on the edge of the Everton box. Luis Suarez must be having a chuckle to himself.
45' MIRALLAS PULLING THE STRINGS
Mirallas has been outstanding in this first half and he produces a wonderful back-heeled turn to beat his marker. Everton win a corner and Coleman ends up blasting just over the crossbar from 20 yards. Three minutes of added time.
43' WEATHERING THE STORM
Mr Marriner resists the temptation to caution Suarez for a foul on Mirallas, despite the fans baying for blood. It's a free-kick in a dangerous position on the left, but Skrtel rises above Distin to clear and Liverpool can breathe a little easier.
39' JONES REPELS MIRALLAS
Everton are running riot here. Mirallas again makes inroads down the left and his left-foot drive is beaten away by Jones.
36' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Everton are back on level terms. A Mirallas cross from the left was charged down, but Fellaini picked up the pieces and delivered a low ball into the centre which was just begging to be banged home. Naismith made no mistake from close range, with Jelavic also in close attendance.
35' GOAL: EVERTON 2 LIVERPOOL 2
Steven Naismith levels for Everton.
32' WALKING A TIGHTROPE
Sterling commits another foul and Mr Marriner decides not to show a second yellow for the trip on Baines. That offence was worse than his first one which produced the caution.
30' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Raheem Sterling fells Leighton Baines. I wonder if he's the youngest player to be cautioned in a Merseyside derby?
29' CHANCE GOES BEGGING
Wisdom is caught in possession and Everton threaten again. Mirallas feeds Jelavic and he looks to have put in Fellaini, who stumbles at the vital moment and a presentable chance is gone.
28' ONLY JUST WIDE
Suarez is really in the mood today. He lets fly with a left-foot snap-shot that whistles just wide of the right-hand upright.
26' HOME SIDE FIRED UP
Everton are getting up a real head of steam here. Skrtel heads away a dangerous cross from Mirallas at the expense of a corner. Jones drops the set-piece and the referee is extremely generous to say that the goalkeeper was fouled.
23' GOAL: EVERTON 1 LIVERPOOL 2
Everton reduce the deficit. Osman is left unmarked on the edge of the Liverpool box. He collects a half-cleared corner and drills a shot into the corner, via a slight nick off Joe Allen.
22' MORE ON THAT GOAL
There's no doubt this one belongs to Suarez. A free-kick delivered at pace from Steven Gerrard was met with an excellent flicked header by the Uruguay striker, giving Howard no chance. A Fellaini effort is deflected just wide at the other end.
21' GOAL: EVERTON 0 LIVERPOOL 2
Luis Suarez puts Liverpool two goals in front.
20' EVERTON BOOKING
Leon Osman is somewhat harshly shown the yellow card after his feet get tangled with those of Raheem Sterling.
19' LEAP OF FAITH
Luis Suarez, who had been criticised for his readiness to go to ground by David Moyes in the build-up to this game, celebrated by running and throwing himself in front of the Everton bench. He's a brave man, I wouldn't mess with the Toffees manager.
16' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Liverpool broke at pace down the left. Enrique put over a dangerous low cross and Sterling went to ground, feeling he had been barged in the back. Mr Marriner waved play on and Suarez drilled a low shot which hit Baines on the leg and deflected in. It's an own goal in my book.
15' GOAL: EVERTON 0 LIVERPOOL 1
Liverpool are in front, Luis Suarez seeing his fierce shot hit Leighton Baines and find the net.
13' YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG
At 17 years and 325 days Raheem Sterling is the fifth youngest player to start a Merseyside derby. If he finds the net he'll be the youngest scorer in this fixture.
10' MAZY RUN FROM MIRALLAS
Mirallas goes on a sensational run down the left, leaving Liverpool bodies in his wake. The dangerous cross is hooked clear by Agger and Brad Jones claws away the ensuing corner.
8' ILL-TEMPERED HISTORY
There have been 20 sendings-off in this match and 11 red cards in the last 14 league meetings between the sides, making this the most ill-disciplined match-up in Premier League history.
6' IS REINA FIT OR NOT?
Interviewed before the game, Brendan Rodgers refused to say that Brad Jones had been preferred on merit to Pepe Reina. “Pepe's not 100 per cent,” he said. “He's only come in to training late on this week.” Interesting, but if Reina's not fully fit, then why is he on the Liverpool bench?
4' WASTED BY ENRIQUE
Back come Liverpool. They have a glorious chance to break and Raheem Sterling would have been in on goal had Jose Enrique produced a better pass.
3' FELLAINI SO IMPORTANT
How important is Marouane Fellaini to Everton. “It's a massive boost [him being declared fit] because he plays such a big part in our team,” said manager David Moyes before the match.
2' EARLY EVERTON PRESSURE
Everton are immediately on the attack. Fellaini wins an initial header, but Jelavic over-hits his cross.
1' HERE WE GO
Everton get the game under way, attacking the goal to our right.

0' TEAM NEWS
Everton have been given a huge boost because Marouane Fellaini has passed a fitness test and replaces Victor Anichebe. The only other change from the side that draw at QPR is Steven Naismith replacing the suspended Steven Pienaar. Tony Hibbert, who has been out for six weeks, is on the bench. Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is fit after a hamstring problem, but he has been left out, with Brad Jones again deputising. The only change from the win over Reading sees Jose Enrique replace the injured Glen Johnson.
0' PREVIEW
Everton and Liverpool meet at Goodison Park on Sunday in what promises to be another enthralling Merseyside derby. It is the 219th time in all competitions that these two great sides have met, with the added incentive for Everton being that a victory would extend the gap over their stuttering city rivals to nine points. The Toffees will also be looking for exact some revenge for last season's two defeats by Liverpool, with the 2-0 reverse at Goodison Park being particularly difficult to swallow as it was largely influenced by Jack Rodwell being incorrectly given his marching orders early in the match. The Reds will be buoyed by the Europa League victory over Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday night, but they really need to address their league form and there would be no better way to give everyone at Anfield a lift than with victory over the noisy neighbours. Today's game kicks off at 1330GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
One of the reasons for Everton's good start to the season has been the decision by David Moyes to play Marouane Fellaini just behind his central striker. When you watch the Toffees they always appear a much more potent force with the big Belgian in the line-up and you feel the result of his pre-match fitness test could be pivotal to the outcome today. Everton's leading scorer, Nikica Jelavic, has four goals already this season and an impressive 13 goals from 17 starts since joining for £5.5 million from Glasgow Rangers in January. For Liverpool, Raheem Sterling scored the winner against Reading in the league last weekend and has the chance today to become the youngest scorer in a Merseyside derby. You can't help, though, but feel that the main threat for the visitors will come from their one recognised striker, Luis Suarez, or their talismanic captain, Steven Gerrard, who last season became the first Liverpool player for 76 years (following Fred Howe) to net a hat-trick in this fixture.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 72 wins to 57 by Everton and 57 games being drawn. At Goodison, Everton have 34 wins to 32 by Liverpool, with a further 27 meetings ending up all square. Liverpool won 2-0 at Goodison last season with goals from Andy Carroll (71 minutes) and Luis Suarez (82), although Everton did lose Jack Rodwell, who was dismissed by referee Martin Atkinson midway through the first half, a decision which was overturned on appeal. The Reds went on to complete a second double over their Merseyside rivals in three years with a 3-0 at Anfield, with all three goals coming from captain Steven Gerrard.
0' FORM GUIDE
Everton kicked off the weekend in fourth place with 15 points from eight games, seven behind leaders Chelsea, but five points better off than they were at the same stage last season. Before this latest round of fixtures, Liverpool were 12th, five points worse off than at the same stage last season. It used to be said that if you lost more than three matches in the Premier League you had no chance of winning the title – the Reds suffered that many defeats in their opening five games. They are, however, unbeaten in three in the league. Everton have lost just one of their last 17 home games and only one of 17 league games anywhere.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Everton will give late fitness tests to Marouane Fellaini, who missed Sunday's draw with QPR because of a knee injury, and Tony Hibbert, who has been out for a month with a calf problem. Darron Gibson is still sidelined with a thigh injury and Steven Pienaar is suspended, having been sent off at Loftus Road last weekend. Liverpool could have Spain stopper Jose Reina back in goal as he has returned to training following a hamstring problem sustained on international duty. Martin Kelly (knee), Lucas Leiva (thigh) and Fabio Borini (foot) are all still out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Andre Marriner, who was appointed to the select group of referees in 2005. The West Midlands whistleblower showed five red cards (none to either of these two teams) and administered 75 cautions in his 22 Premier League games last year. Marriner is no stranger to big games and was given the title-deciding match between Manchester City and Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium back in April. That trend has continued this term and he has already taken charge of Everton's opener with Manchester United and Liverpool's home match with Manchester City. Marriners's assistants today are Scott Ledger and Mick McDonough, while Phil Dowd is the fourth official.
